World Cup 2014 – Scout Notes – Matchday 2, Day 3

Fit-again Luis Suarez is England’s chief tormentor, after scoring twice to leave the Three Lions on the cusp of elimination. Gervinho is in the goals for Ivory Coast but the Africans lose out to Colombia, with James Rodriguez netting once again, while Japan and Greece both fail to find the net in a goalless Group C draw:

Suarez Double Downs England
The script was written, really, after the Liverpool forward recovered from a knee injury in time for last night’s vital encounter. Suarez sat on the sidelines for the opening loss to Costa Rica but came back with a bang against Roy Hodgson’s side, nodding home a superb Edinson Cavani cross before taking advantage of a Steven Gerrard error to boost Uruguay’s chances of progressing. While a game against Italy is no easy task, Suarez’ deadly finishing is sure to bring further investment his way as the South Americans look for a result to seal a place in the knockout stages.

Tactics-wise, Oscar Tabarez moved from 4-4-2 to 4-3-1-2 and made five changes to the side that lost to Costa Rica. Martin Caceres came in for the suspended Maxi Pereira at right-back, centre-half Diego Lugano dropped out for Jose Maria Gimenez, while further up the pitch, Alvaro Gonzalez, Nicolas Lodeiro and Suarez came in for Walter Gargano, Christian Stuani and Diego Forlan.

Rooney Finally Breaks World Cup Duck
Unchanged from last week’s loss to Italy, England had the majority of possession (63%) and fired six attempts on target to their opponents’ two but once again were undone by some poor finishing. Wayne Rooney was handed a central role behind Daniel Sturridge last night, as Roy Hodgson shifted Raheem Sterling onto the right flank, and the former was involved in England’s best chances – nodding against the woodwork early on before converting a close-range tap-in from Glen Johnson’s cross. Although Hodgson’s side could be eliminated if Italy draw with Costa Rica tonight, some holding England assets may well hold for their final game (particularly if they still have everything to play for), though Sterling’s owners may be a little concerned after he was subbed off just after the hour mark.

In the FIFA McDonald’s game, there were just 56 recovered balls in this one. For Uruguay, Arevalo Rios led the way with six, whilst Gimenez managed five at centre-half. Phil Jagielka was England’s standout performer with six, though Adam Lallana caught the eye after registering four in just 19 minutes as a second-half sub.

Rodriguez Nets Again in Colombia Win
The South Americans were unchanged from the side that coasted past Greece last time around. Monaco’s James Rodriguez was again key to his side’s triumph and followed up last week’s strike with the opener against the Ivorians to vindicate our Fantasy attentions, whilst right winger Juan Cuadrado and lone frontman Teofilo Gutierrez also kept their tallies ticking over by providing an assist apiece. The 2-1 victory puts Jose Pekerman’s side in the Group C driving seat and with a final game against Japan to follow, further investment could prove profitable.

Gervinho Gem Not Enough for Ivorians
A superb solo effort from the Roma wide man proved no more than scant consolation in a poor display from the Africans. Sabri Lamouchi’s decision to drop Salomon Kalou onto the bench along with Didier Drogba allowed Max Gradel to join Wilfried Bony and Gervinho in the front three but with just three efforts on target all match, they lacked any real cohesion in the final third. Given that Kalou and Drogba were regulars during the qualifying campaign, Lamouchi’s decision to freshen up his forward options for Brazil 2014 has met with mixed results – indeed, it wasn’t until Drogba’s introduction in last week’s win over Japan that his side finally found their feet. With the final game against Greece a must-win, Lamouchi has decisions to make up front if his side are to progress.

In the FIFA McDonald’s game, three of the Colombia back-four registered at least five recovered balls – Pablo Armero and Mario Yepes managed six and Cristian Zapata produced five. Central midfield pair Cheick Tiote (seven) and Serey Die (five) stood out, as did centre-half Didier Zakora, with five.

Ten Man Greece Hold Japan
Alberto Zaccheroni made a couple of changes for the 11pm kick-off. Yasuyuki Konno came in at centre-half for Masato Morishige, whilst further up the park, United’s Shinji Kagawa was dropped for Yoshito Okubo in the attacking midfield three, with Shinji Ozazaki moved to the left flank to accommodate the switch. Despite playing against 10 men for over 50 minutes due to the dismissal of Greek central midfielder Konstantinos Katsouranis, Japan were simply unable to break down a side that shipped three to Colombia in the previous Matchday. Zaccheroni’s side had 72% possession but managed only four efforts on target all game – a win against the South Americans next time around could still see them through but few, if any, will be convinced to invest after last night’s display.

Greeks Falter in Front of Goal Once Again
Fernando Santos also made a couple of alterations to his starting XI. Both changes were in attack, as Kostas Mitroglou replaced Theofanis Gekas through the middle and Ioannis Fetfatzidis came in for Dimitrios Salpingidis on the right of the front three, but once again, Greece were unable to find the net in a poor attacking display. It’s no real surprise, bearing in mind they scored just 12 times in 10 qualifying matches and although their resilience helped deliver clean sheets for Fantasy owners, Santos’ side will need to change tactics in the final game if they are to have any chance of progressing – a win over Ivory Coast, coupled with a Colombia victory over Japan, would still see them through.

In the FIFA McDonald’s game, central midfielder Hotaru Yamaguchi (six) and centre-half Maya Yoshida (five) were the standout players for Japan when it came to recovered balls. Greece, unsurprisingly, caught the eye more in a battling display – full-backs Vasilis Torosidis and Jose Cholebas led the way with nine and seven respectively, followed by centre-halves Sokratis Papastathopoulos (six) and Kostas Manolas (five).

Here's my take on last night's England performance. I thought one of poorest pieces of England play last night was from Leighton Baines. He kept getting into great crossing positions, but instead of crossing he then cut back and passed back to someone in the middle...usually Rooney or Henderson, who then got crowded out. Contrast that with the Swiss full backs or the Colombian wingers who ping in crosses fast.

There are a couple of reasons why Baines did this - 1. he lacks confidence...indeed his record at Everton with successful crosses is also poor. 2. he looked up and there was no one there. I think it was a combination of both with Rooney the main culprit. He should be in the box ready to take the cross..he wasn't because his positional sense was all over the shop. There's a reason he has only scored one goal in a World Cup finals...he's not up to international standard. He and Sturridge should have been busily drawing defenders out as Suarez and Sturridge do successfully for Liverpool.

In contrast I thought Sturridge had a good game...he just lacks a Peter Beardsley figure to help out. Rooney is clearly not that player for England.

Another point was how poor England were at set pieces. They failed to win almost any balls from a corner.

Where do you think it has gone wrong for England?

Beardsley and Lineker is probably the best attacking partnership England have ever had....even if the lad looks a little strange.

Baines did literally stop the attacking flow. Imagine Rodriguez or Cuadrado in the same position.....they'd run and ping in a cross.. Oscar for Brazil too. This is the standard of the World Cup and Baines is not there clearly.

Guys remember. Baines had no options going forward and did not get cover when he did go up the pitch himself. Playing 5 at the back is better for wing backs. Gerard and Henderson had to cover but not very well. I felt sorry for him because he did not trust his cover and the Uruguayans closed him down quickly. Johnson had a shocker; gave the ball away all the time whereas Baines jus passed short. Nobody could win set pieces or take their chances with a 62% possession rate.

God knows why Glen Johnsons there (even though he set up the goal)

Wilshere should start also instead of Henderson. Welbeck shouldn't play 🙁

I'm not sold on Wilshire and Henderson...much of a muchness for England. I don't mind who plays. Against Uruguay the wings were their weakness and where England should have won. There was no point going through the middle all the time. I don;t think Wilshire instead of Henderson would have turned the game.

Ashley Cole or even Shaw at left back and JT at centre back instead of Jagielka could have done though. I completely agree that they would have saved us from two defeats, or at least one.

Baines has had 12 crosses (fourth) with a success rate of 8%..the lowest of any player with a significant no of crosses. In terms of how many crosses he could of had then I agree with you Jonty...he should be double at least. Aurier is the top for crosses with 16 and top for quality imo. Suarez managed 12 in his single game so far.

As above, last night's game was lost by England on the wings. Gerrard, Henderson, Wilshire are all ok at that level but not great. This should be Gerrard's last World Cup. I'd like to see Wilshire and Henderson given more England time to develop.

That's true...but Wilshire still loses the ball too often for England. At this level you need to be able to keep the ball and pick out that killer pass.

I look back at Paul Scholes England career and think..wow, we actually had a midfielder who can do those things, keep the ball, set up play, put in the killer pass and we wasted it.

yep & that's just one example, another one was the persistence with playing gerrard & lampard together even tho it clearly didnt work, we wouldve been better off playing one or the other & keeping them in their natural positions rather than trying to force it because they were two of our better players. it's similar this world cup with rooney playing on the left even tho he rarely plays there for utd.... we've been making these mistakes for yrs & yrs.

i'd have personally gone 4-3-3 with england's squad of players. sterling, rooney, sturridge front 3, milner left and henderson right of gerrard in the middle 3 shuttling wide to help out baines and johnson in defence. on the subject of johnson i think he stepped up well as he did in euro 2012 with lots of critcism directed his way in the build up

Yes. Nail on head and something I realised yesterday. I mentioned on here last night I was annoyed at Joe Hart and the defence because all the big chance our opponents got, they scored. But then I realised that it this wasn't their fault. The strikers were just doing what they should be doing, getting chances and making them count. It was actually England's own inability to take their chances that has cost us.

We allowed only 2 real chances to both Italy and Uruguay and yet they took them all superbly. England on the other hand, had just as much if not more yet only took them 25/50% of the time, hence why we lost both games.

We allowed far more chances than that. Cavani and Gonzalez had great chances and twice Suarez almost scored from corners. Then Italy also hit the post and bar.

What's really depressing is Jose Maria Gimenez Uruguay's CB was comfortable last night, yet he's played less than 20 senior games and only once for Atletico all season.

If Gerrard is so immobile we needed someone like Wilshere moving the ball forward. I'd have played him ahead of an out of position Welbeck.

Rooney not up to international standard? He's only scored 40 goals in 90+ appearances for England. Yeah right.

One goal at World Cup finals....that's a terrible record. His many goals against the minnows of Europe in qualification is more about him being selected so often for England for so many years rather than being international standard. Peter Crouch would be on 40 goals if he'd have played the same number of games.

Don;t get me wrong Rooney is a great player, but just not World Cup quality. Whether that's him, the way he's managed or the players around him is an interesting debate though..

He's scored 5 in the Euros and many many goals in the Champions League. Standards of those comps are comparable IMO.

His record in WC finals has been very poor as has his fitness coming into them.

The Crouch comparison is just crazy Jonty, really?

Peter Crouch scored 22 goals in 42 internationals.

Rooney has scored 40 in 94.

Alot of those games have been against weaker opposition where many English strikers could have scored if picked. Rooney is always picked so he's the guy to score against the likes of Bulgaria or San Marino or against bigger teams only in friendlies.

You are mistaking me saying Crouch is as good as Rooney as a player. He isn't. But pretty much any England striker should be scoring against San Marino. Rooney is picked more so has more chances. Where Crouch has the upper hand is that he has a better goal to game ratio.

What they both have in common though is that on the World stage they are not World Cup finals quality.

And I don't buy the fitness angle really. Has Rooney just come back from key hole surgery on his knee like Suarez, who calmly took his two chances and prove his international class?

      In short: Roy Hodgson.

Why would you play an attacking 4 with only Sterling as a genuine midfielder, and with Rooney and Welbeck as 'wingers'. Daft. A poor effort at copying Rodgers forgetting that he has no Suarez and has no Coutinho, who tracks back. Welbeck in the side was a joke. GJ gets some bad press but he was the best of a poor back 4 handpicked by Roy. I would have started with both Wilshire and JH with Rooney and Sterling supporting Sturridge. Also, Gerrard should not be playing 90 minutes after a full season in the humidity of Brazil. Cole should have started. Lampard would have been an excellent impact player, you cannot discount experience particularly when England is down (I see him as an attacking swap for Gerrard, moving Wilshire and JH deeper). Lambert should have also been given more of a chance with a strong set piece presence (perhaps for Rooney). Other bench players for me would be Barkley, Milner or Lallana depending on the game situation.
Even with the best team and a decent manager, QF is about as good as could be expected with the side (defensively weak and without a combative DM). It is a shame that Roy spectacularly failed to organise the team defensively, however (what he is know for). If Iran could do it..

It is alarming that the media seem to think England did 'OK' or 'well' against Italy. It is one thing to pass the ball around, but the WC is all about results, and England never led or looked value for a win at any stage v Italy or Uruguay.

Brazil. solid defense and lots of pace to break on the counter - alves, neymar, hulk, oscar, ramires, willian, bernard. personally I like to play neymar centrally with willian out wide, bernard CAM with oscar and ramires as defensive mids. so whoever ends up with the ball can start a fast counterattack

Argentina also have good pace on the break with messi, aguero, di maria, lavezzi and even palacio

could also go belgium. good defense and pace through mirallas, mertens, hazard, dembele

germany could work too with a strong defense and pace through muller, schurrle and gotze

england another possibility as sturridge, welbeck, sterling, and ox are all pacey.

though I think brazil is my preference of those

baines has never played champions league, world cup, euros, title run-in and he's clearly a quiet lad who would rather lay up on a par 5 than have a go at the green. it's not exactly a shock. he's 30 this year and it's the first world cup squad he's made.

this links with an overall point too. there were tonnes of advocates of england going with some different players as they had no chance of winning the world cup anyway. so there was a resignation there. yet now the inevitable has happened, maybe 1 or 2 games earlier than normal, it's a big deal again. spain should now be questioning, stressing etc as they actually come with expectation. cole should have played if england wanted their best XI, him being england's best world cup performer for the last 12 years is only semi-relevant if he's past it, but he showed against atleti then liverpool he's fine to be thrown in still. baines for the games against much inferior teams, cole for everything else

J ROD balls into the box. So according the Mcdonalds he didn't have 2? I'm sure he had at least 4, any chance of a score change coming? Like how after round 1 many player's scores changed (e.g. pique -4).

Hmm didn't realize that was a requirement, thought it was just balls in.
Thinking about twisting, got many options which are Evra/Valbuena, Messi, Ozil, Hazard and CR7. Last round it didn't work out and I ended up with Kombarov getting me 16. If I had knew the rules I would have had Neymar as captain first game so lost 6points there.

Trying to calculate Italy v Costa Rica FFS scores by deducting last week's scores from the total. Should probably do some proper work instead shouldn't I?

How would you feel if FPL did as McD's do, and stop you from seeing other peoples team.

Would it help or hinder the non-casual players?

My best runs in FPL is when I don't bother with my ML rivals' teams and just do what I think will score me the most points. As soon as I start trying to go for differentials, it all goes downhill.

I just want Italy to beat Costa Rica tonight so at least that gives us something to play for going into Tuesday game. I can't bear the thought of watching a game that means nothing. Even if Italy - Uruguay doesn't go the right way, at least it'll give the evening some excitement.
