Moving Target

Moving Target – Robert Snodgrass

Having snapped up Jake Livermore from Tottenham last month, Steve Bruce continued to strengthen Hull City’s midfield by acquiring Robert Snodgrass from Norwich City. The 26-year-old arrives at the KC Stadium on a three-year contract in a deal believed to be in the region of £7m and makes his way back to the Premier League less than two months after dropping down into the Championship with the relegated Canaries:

Talking to the Hull official website upon completion of the deal, the Scot was clearly relieved to be handed a second opportunity in the English top-flight as the Tigers attempt to improve upon last term’s 16th place finish:

“After speaking to the owners and the manager, I was desperate to come here. I’m ready for a new chapter and I’m delighted that it’s going to come with Hull City. Having had two years of playing in the Premier League, it is where I want to be. Every player will tell you that they want to play in the top flight and I’m delighted that I can continue to do that.”

The History

Born and bred in Glasgow, Snodgrass displayed a single-mindedness as a youngster by turning down an apprenticeship at boyhood club Celtic and a trial with Barcelona to sign for Livingston instead. Handed his debut in 2004-05, he proceeded to score six goals in 42 appearances over two Scottish Premier League seasons before his club were relegated to Division One. Snodgrass played six times before picking up a metatarsal injury and, upon recovering, dropped down a division to help his rehabilitation, notching on five occasions in 12 games for Stirling Albion.

The following season saw the Scot establish himself as a key player for Livingston and, after netting nine times in 31 matches, was snapped up by Leeds ahead of 2008-09. In his first two seasons at Elland Club, Snodgrass’ impact helped the club climb out of League One into the Championship by serving up 16 goals and 12 assists in 86 appearances. Having delivered six goals and eight assists in his first year in the Championship, Snodgrass stepped up another level and delivered 13 goals and 15 assists in 43 appearances over 2011-12, winning the Player of the Year awards from both his team-mates and the club’s fans.

With many Premier League suitors circling, Snodgrass opted to sign for Norwich in July 2012.The Scot made his way onto Fantasy managers’ radars after serving up six goals and eight assists in his first season in the English top-flight but a total of six strikes and two assists in 2013-14 wasn’t enough to prevent the Canaries from dropping into the Championship. At international level, Snodgrass made his debut for Scotland back in 2011 and has gone on to fire three goals in 16 appearances.

The Prospects

There’s no doubt Snodgrass’ arrival will give Bruce’s side a much-needed boost in creativity for the season ahead, both domestically and in the Europa League. Hull scored just 38 times in 2013-14 – the fourth worst record in the Premier League – and their manager will be more than aware that, if they are to avoid the drop this time around, improvements in the final third are essential.

Although Snodgrass mustered just two assists last term, the stats show that his frequency of key passes actually quickened in his second year with Norwich. In 2012/13, he managed 66 key passes from 3,182 minutes – an average of 48.2 minutes per chance created – compared to 67 key passes (the same number as Steven Gerrard, for example) over 2,704 minutes last term, or an average of 40.4 minutes. Given that Tom Huddlestone was the most impressive Hull midfielder with an average of 56.8 minutes per key pass, it’s obvious that Snodgrass’ installation is clearly a step in the right direction and could turn out to be a masterstroke as Bruce looks to provide more ammunition for front two Shane Long and Nikica Jelavic.

Likely to be handed a major share of corners and set-pieces, the Scot’s dead-ball ability could bring him back onto our Fantasy radars – providing he remains reasonably priced across the Fantasy games. A of 6cost.2 in the recently-released Sky Sports game certainly bodes well for Fantasy managers looking to invest in the former Norwich playmaker and if he comes in around the 6.0 or 6.5 mark in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), his underlying stats certainly indicate he’s likely to prove the best route into Bruce’s midfield.

In terms of position, Snodgrass offers the Tigers options right across the attacking midfield areas. A reprisal of his right wing role for Leeds and Norwich could be on the cards and with a fit-again Robbie Brady on the opposite flank, Bruce’s options out wide will take a turn for the better. Tactically, the Hull boss rolled out a three-man backline on a number of occasions last term, with Ahmed Elmohamady as right wing-back, but the Egyptian is perhaps more likely to be utilised as a right-back in a four-man defence in order to accommodate Snodgrass further up the pitch.

After mustering just one win and a single draw across the last eight league fixtures of 2013/14, the release of next term’s Premier League fixture list affords Bruce’s side reason for early optimism. Over the first five Gameweeks of the new campaign, Hull square up to QPR, Stoke, Villa, West Ham and Newcastle – a run of matches which could allow the Tigers the chance of a quick start and, if his new team-mates can tuck away the numerous opportunities he will surely provide, bring Snodgrass back into our Fantasy plans once again.

Surely to God Brazil cannot reach the final of a World Cup with Fred now their hapless main man? The guy's been woeful so far and is worse than a man short. Hummels & co will feel like they're being savaged by a dead sheep tomorrow night.

I'm having some of that 100/30 for Germany to win to nil. Easy money! 😀

But has Hulk ever scored in a competitive game for Brazil? He's got the vapours any time he's been near goal thus far.

      "Defence wins Titles"- Lothar Matthaus.

None of the commentators seem to understand this and as a result the general football public thinks the same as the commentators that teams need to play wonderful attacking football to win. If you look at all the world cup winners since the 70's they all have one thing in common, they concede very few goals.

The one thing about this game is that both Germany and Brazil seem to have realised this and tightened up at the back in what is a deviation from his previous philosophy by Low. Germany should win now that Neymar is out but the home crowd will have big part to play too.

Yeah Tiago has been immense tbf. What I like most about the Brazil defense is the way their defenders attack the ball and actually try and intercept it instead of waiting in a solid four man line for the forward to collect it turn and start running at them. You can only do this if the whole defense is very mobile and able to cover for each other though. Luiz looks class in the Brazil jersey for this reason imo

I agree with you. I actually thought Luiz was very dodgy the first game or two but I've been nothing but impressed since then and I certainly do like that structure!

Thiago Silva is a huge loss in terms of organisation of defense. The way he orchestrates the defence, there's a chance they'll be outright disfunctional without him. It's an experienced defence, though, and could do well without him too, but often when the leader of the defence is out, the rest just don't know how to play.

In addition, Silva is elegant with the ball whereas Dante is a donkey, and that will matter too.

I agree, one of Dante or Luiz needs to step up to that role. I also agree about composition on the ball, it's a gulf of difference really!

I don't think either Dante or Luiz can step up to that role. Between a big pile of meat with a wacky afro and a sideshow bob running like a headless chicken, which one would you like to see organizing your defence? Neither? Yeah, I thought so.

To messi or not to messi, that is the question. Without di maria and aguero, Argentina will look to messi even more – but who is going to create the space for him? Can see this one being a 0-0, especially given the two sides performances in knockout stages, so leaning towards not having messi for the first time so far

Really? they were relegation candidates before they sacked adkins & that was with all their star players, theyve now lost the manager that got them to where they were aswell as the majority of their best players. It's gonna take a huge effort to ge this team playing again, even with the new signings.

I agree with funky, they have basically reverted to the team Adkins had minus Shaw and Lambert (if they lose Lovren and the def mids). Unless they get their shizzle together over this transfer window then they could very easily be relegated as the squad was thin enough before they started losing players.

Nobody will buy Fonte, he has only looked good because of the cover he got with Pochetino's formation and tactics. If Southampton lose Schneiderlin and or Wanyama I think they could be in big trouble.

Ironically the player he's 'replacing' is Baird who went other way.... Good transfer for us, solid Prem experience... Will he be our first choice RB, as it stands no, Ben Mee has done nothing wrong, however, we need (as stated above) solid, Prem 'quality' & feel Reid would be better pick for us

I wouldn't worry about room in the squad for talented youngsters to push through as it is all Utd seem to be able to attract to the club. No champions league seems to be really hurting their ability to attract established experienced players.

If Liverpool or Spurs keep them out of the champions league for another season next year then Utd could really start to be in trouble (I seriously doubt this will happen though)

An experienced, commanding leader of a centre-half would be perfect.

Need to cement that spine through the middle of the team.

Well, I don't really back any other team to keep a clean sheet other than Argentina. So, I'll just load up on the Germans at the back, and if they don't come through, hopefully the Argies do.

It definitely is not ideal for Arsenal to end up with Balotelli.

Also, Navas's buy out clause is at £6.5M, and I doubt Levante will sell him for anything less than that in current conditions.

I would agree on balotelli, its too much of a risk for wenger to take... Martinez an obvious alternative. Remy a cheaper one.
think Benzema/Mandzucic are too similar to Giroud.

            we dont own vela mate

why would we sell podolski? one of the best finishers around...he can play 1000-1500 minutes all season and score 15 goals

looks like vermaelen is leaving so yes i like veltman and ginter however there is no way wenger will sign 2 cbs this summer

also balotelli is not coming...giroud should start most games and have sanchez and walcott and sanogo as potential replacements to make sure he gets proper rest

arsenal sold the buyback clause on vela for 10mln, sociedad effectively resigned him.

podolski does nothing defensively. wenger is reluctant to play him and doesnt have faith. even when others were injured he opted for sanogo/gnabry/rosciky ahead of him

On the basis of defensive effort, Arsenal should sell Walcott first.

And maybe they should. I mean, currently they could actually get big money from Walcott, and it could be well be worth it to take that money.

Yeah, plus that he is an extreme defensive liability. Or actually completely absent from any defensive duties whatsoever. I would sell him if there was a big enough bid, and sign Sanchez and Rémy for probably less than that money.

But it seems like Wenger wants to build on British players now, so he's probably not keen to do that.

Btw, on your point about Podolski's usefulness as a squad player, his minutes per goal involvement ratio is third best in Premier League history (behind only Henry and Aguero) and his scoring record from last season was pretty similar to Walcott's.

It's strange then that people may want Pod out, but think Walcott is essential. You would make much more money on Walcott, who also sees himself as a star player in the team, whereas Podolski seems to be more fine with playing a smaller role.

But you already apparently did sell Vela's buy back clause to Real Sociedad for a fee possibly as high as £15M. That does count as a player sold, in a way.

Does anyone else see the problem with having Muller, Messi and Robben as forwards for the semis?

Most here want to play with 5 at the back now due to defenders success, but a 5-2-3 formation isn't allowed.
Should Muller perform in the first game, then you will want to keep him in. As big money forwards you also want to sub in Messi and Robben, so play 3 up front.
This means the max number of defenders you can play is 4.

I guess it depends whether you expect Messi to deliver a score of 3 again as to whether you gamble.

I have 2 from each team in goals or defence, have three big forwards and four holding mids.
Can't see any other mids I want to spend big money on so why not have muller and if he scores decent then points are in bag and I have option of bringing in one or two forwards or defenders.

Good points. I tried to play it the other way last round and it did not go particularly well.

I just can't bring myself to fill my squad with holding midfielders and central defenders, but that is how the game should be played.

I might go for a second goalkeeper...

9th overall but anyone in the top 50 could win it as long as they take some risks in the next two rounds, still lots of players to pick from with less substitutions, captain changes etc.. I guess the Germans are the ones to beat now...

Perez probably. Not 100% though. They might try something different tactically against Holland.
