Pre-Season

Pre-Season Section Now Live

With the Brazil World Cup set to conclude tomorrow, we’ve rolled out the Pre-Season Section of the site once again as our attentions begin to turn towards matters more domestic.

As some clubs start to prepare for their first friendlies, we’ve collated the current summer schedule for all 20 Premier League outfits. Furthermore, we’ve linked every article referencing each team for the upcoming season published to this point. You can visit the Pre-Season guide for a full index of Scout Reports, Moving Targets, Great Expectations and our recently-launched Fixture Analysis pieces, in addition to our assessments of the three promoted sides posted last month.

We’ll be updating the Pre-Season section on a daily basis, adding every article upon publication. Each team also has their own “Scout Notes” and “Form Players” sections which will be refreshed as we go. We’ll be scouring the friendlies and, as well as rolling out plenty of Scout Scribbles articles to cover the matches, will be using this as a handy one-stop-shop to compile your guide ahead of next month’s season kick-off.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

    This dont look good, from what I've read, a bit of a trouble maker (think Bendtner, thinks he's better than he is):

    Burnley have agreed a £1million deal with Middlesbrough for striker Lukasz Jutkiewich

    Reported by someone last night:

    Stoke City are hopeful of concluding a deal to sign Barcelona striker Bojan

    Looks like a question of will Bony choose Champions league football (& not guaranteed starts) or go for more money to Spurs, but almost guaranteed first team:

    Tottenham are stepping up their bid to land Swansea striker Wilfried Bony, despite him being widely linked with an impending move to Liverpool. Spurs are prepared to go to £18million

            At Liverpool he will play first team with Sturridge and Sterling flanking him in a 433. Lambert will be the impact sub. And Lambert won't care about this. He's happy to even be there.

        I think he wanted to go Daniel, when that happens and given his next suspension could be season long, I think they did the best they could with a bad situation.
        They met the buy out after all, so what else could they do? No one wants a top player who doesn't want to be there having a poor season and their value dropping like a stone.

        It's not a mistake if teh player:

        a) wants to leave;
        b) has a minimum fee release clause to one club only, that club being the club who bought him;
        c) has serious pyschological issues, thus biting 3 players in his career, and psychiatrists saying he's likely to do it again and hence...;
        d)...get a longer ban;
        e) Will be villified by the tabloid scum.

        Yes, they will be weaker. But as he's arguably the 3rd best player in football. But they also had/have a weak squad so 5 players for the pric eof one isn't too bad an outcome, especially if those players have the potential to become stars themselves.

    Now that the quiz is tied, we are heading into a triple header tie-breaker between GreenWindMill, Notorious and Archie!

    Only one question will be asked which will include 10 sub-questions requiring you to identify a team/manager/club with the given hints.

    Here are the rules

    *You MUST answer within 5 minutes
    *0 if you 'PASS' the question
    *+1 for correct answer
    *-2 for wrong answer

    Bear in mind negative marking can have an impact, so I'd advise you to answer only if you're absolutely sure. You can always 'pass' if you don't wish to answer a sub question.

    Here is a sample if you’re unsure about the format

          Fer is injured I believe. I have Huntelaar and Jo in my team. I know Huntelaar might not start so I have a plan to switch to Robben.
          Jo should start according to training lineups yesterday. I have plenty in reserve for my punts tonight.

    hi guys, i fell asleep whilst thinking about this last night, but i promise it's not due to how boring it is.
    it's basically about teams selling their star player.
    tottenham lost bale and were pretty much mocked for how badly they did in the transfer window with only really one signing of many (eriksen) seen as a success. they also employed tim sherwood for several months, tim sherwood ffs. nevertheless their last 3 seasons now read 69 points, 72 points, 69 points. very steady with and without bale.
    previous pfa player of the year rvp was also seen as irreplaceable as an individual. arsenal last 2 seasons with rvp: 68, 70. 2 seaons without rvp: 73, 79. they sold rvp and song and bought 4 players with the money.
    spurs wasn't quite 1 out 7 in but it might as well have been, the other sold were a bunch of english fringe guff. having more money is certainly more dangerous as the risk of buying players not good enough to the point of disruption is increased. when liverpool sold torres and went on a big spending spree they actually went backwards for a season as they bought a big chunk of players who were either not good enough (carroll, downing, adam) or who may have been good enough but were not living up to their transfer fee (suarez & henderson).
    the transfer market is so massively flawed these days (team players are undervalued despite it being a team sport and visa versa) that unless you make a massive hash of buying after the big sale you really should really improve. calling individuals irreplaceable is a valid point but also means very little. the real madrid galacticos would have won everything easily if it was that simple. the didn't just not win lots they barely won anything.
    van persie would have probably scored that chance giroud missed, but now there is a cazorla making more chances and podolski scoring x more goals than the previous left winger and walcott stepping up more on the other wing.
    liverpool set such a very high standard last season that it's the first time i'm not 100% confident of the team either being unchanged or better off. 84 points was an exceptional total but i still think it will take some awful signings and the champions league (+ a couple of cup runs) to really ware them out at the point they started motoring last season for them to do worse.
    losing a big player means there is a risk of going backwards which otherwise wasn't there, but i think there is also the chance to push on as a team which also otherwise wasn't there. in today's flawed and inflated market i think the rewards really outweigh the risk.
    the 3 biggest sales of last season:
    bale: spurs 3 points down.
    cavani: napoli exactly same tally as season before.
    falcao: atletico basically spent just £5m of the hilarious fee on their starting XI.

    i don't really know how to summarise my point, or what it is exactly, but all is not lost for liverpool. i hate the 'x is irreplaceable' thing, you don't need to replace them 1 for 1, that's thankfully not how football works.

    random side-note, i though markovic looked electric against spurs in the europa

      Well I hope so. It really shouldn't be disastrous, we'll be missing a world class talent, but hopefully can improve as a team.
      I think the reality is that Sturridge is Suarez' replacement as a striker, because we'll just shift from the various formations with two up top to a more natural 4-3-3 as we don't have to shoehorn in our two best players up front any more. Hence we're buying wide players.
      I hope Markovic comes good, he has lighting pace and quick feet, but needs work on his end product.

      I think a lot comes down to whether we can keep Sturridge fit all season.
