Moving Target – Mathieu Debuchy

After opening their summer spending spree with the acquisition of Alexis Sanchez, Arsenal continued to strengthen for the season ahead by snapping up Mathieu Debuchy from Newcastle. The right-back arrives on a long-term deal and hands the Gunners a replacement for Bacary Sagna, who left for champions Manchester City under freedom of contract:

Discussing the move with the club’s official website, Arsene Wenger
revealed that the Frenchman was his main target to take over from the departed Sagna and underlined the new boy’s attacking potential as key:

“We are delighted to welcome Mathieu Debuchy to Arsenal Football Club. He has shown he can perform at the highest level with his club sides and also for France. He is a quality defender who has good Premier League experience and I’m confident he will fit in very well with us. The obvious replacement for Sagna was Debuchy. He knows what to expect and that’s of course a huge advantage. Debuchy is very good going forward, is very quick in transition. He is sharp in his marking, good with interceptions and quick to go from defence to attack. You feel he always has the desire to go forward, so I believe he will be perfectly suited to our style in that aspect.”

The History

A product of the Lille youth academy in his native France, the 28-year-old made his debut back in the 2003/04 season. Over the course of a decade, Debuchy cemented his spot as a regular at right-back and played a total of 289 times across all competitions, with his threat down the flank serving up 18 goals and 16 assists. A habit for incurring the referee’s wrath was obvious back in Ligue 1, though; Debuchy receiving 57 yellow cards and was dismissed on five occasions before making his way to Newcastle in January 2013.

The Frenchman made 14 league appearances for the Magpies in his debut campaign but failed to deliver any attacking returns for Alan Pardew’s side. Last term, though, he stepped up in the final third and managed a goal and four assists in 29 league games – again, though, his disciplinary record was a cause for concern, with 12 yellows and a couple of dismissals in 46 matches across all competitions for the Tyneside team.

On the international stage, Debuchy has scored twice in 25 appearances for France and, as evidenced by the recent World Cup, has edged past Sagna as Didier Deschamps’ first-choice right-back.

The Prospects

The reported £12m deal certainly bodes well for Debuchy’s Fantasy prospects for the season ahead. A look at the statistics shows that Wenger rarely rotated at right-back and centre-half – Sagna, Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker appeared in the first XI on 32+ occasions – compared to the uncertainty on the left which saw Kieran Gibbs and Nacho Monreal handed 24 and 13 starts respectively.

After serving up 17 clean sheets in 2013/14 (11 at home and six on the road), Wenger’s backline was second only to Chelsea (18) for shut-outs, conceding a mere 11 times in front of their own fans. Granted, their form on the road against title contenders (leaking 17 goals on their travels to Chelsea, Liverpool and City) may persuade us to bench their main assets for tougher trips but, having started the Fantasy games as a Newcastle player, Debuchy’s kinder price tag strengthens his appeal.

Coming in at 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 6.1 in the Sky Sports game, the right-back is 0.5 cheaper than Mertesacker and Koscielny in the former game – persuading many to snap him up in the hope that Wenger’s side can replicate last year’s resilience.

It’s not just defensive potential that brings Debuchy onto our radars, though. In the season gone by, the Frenchman was third for shots (35) and attempts on target (12) amongst defenders despite starting only 28 matches, whilst a comparison with Sagna also reflects his promise; Debuchy produced an attempt on goal every 74.7 minutes to Sagna’s 201.3, whilst he was also quicker for creating chances by 113.6 minutes to 153.4.

Whilst showdowns against Everton, City, Spurs and Chelsea in the first seven Gameweeks hand Wenger’s side a mixed opening schedule, Debuchy’s points potential at both ends of the pitch could offset any lack of defensive returns and persuade many that he’s worth the early investment.

Liverpool are said to have hijacked Arsenal's bid for Atletico Madrid right-back Javi Manquillo, according to reports in AS.

The Gunners had been in talks with Manquillo over a switch to the Emirates Stadium, but the 21-year-old now looks set for a move to Brendan Rodgers' side on an initial season-long loan deal.

It is thought that the deal, which could be completed within the next few days, also includes the option to be made permanent at the end of the campaign.

I wouldn't double up on Newcastle defence, better to hedge bets and spread the risk between teams IMO. Mata and Rooney could be competing for a single spot in the Man U XI so wouldn't have both myself.

Still not feeling settled, I want 4 united but not convinced with Mata> Ozil. Is 4 players too much Man United?

    Begovic - (Krul)
Vermaelen (assuming United), Filipe Luis, Jones, Chiriches, Chester
    Ozil, Eriksen, Hazard, (Shelvey), (Tadic)
    Diouf (C), Rooney (VC), (Pelle)

p.s. Diouf captaincy will most likely be changed. No Money in the bank 🙁

    Which is better

    A- DDG + 4 M GK

    B- 2* 4.5 M GKS

I personally don't like rotating GKs as leads to frustration in my experience (i.e. away GK gets cs + save/bonus points in a surprise away result whereas home GK lets in a few concedes pen in an ostensibly easier fixture) so would favour A but not sure about DDG - Man U's defence was a shambles last season and LVG is undoubtedly a good coach but he's not a miracle worker. I would rather go with Shaw as Man U defensive cover who may at least bring in some attacking returns in the absence of clean sheets.

I don't pick United players ever since I went with Van Nistelrooy in 2004-05 season and he only played 17 games and scored 6 times and Chelsea won the league so here is my team this season:

    Courtois & Speroni
    Clyne, Debuchy, Trappier, Baines, Cahill
Sanchez, Tadic, De Jong, Eriksen, Albrighton
    Gomis, Pelle, Diouf

I appreciate strike force is potentially weak but I think all 3 will be regulars, but once Valencia is released, will replace Diouf or Gomis probably.

Still have 1.5 in the bank as well. Thoughts?

Yet you buy Everton defenders with poor fixtures, overpriced promoted wb punts, leicester mids, unproven forwards and newcastle players. 😀 It's always a risk!

I'm a Leeds Fan but still have United players, come on man, I think you're team would do well to have atleast a couple of Man Utd players or you may fall behind the rest!

Not picking Man U players because of a retired players performance a decade ago, seems... odd.

You have three noobies in mid-field. I don't mind a new prem player now and again, but having three of them dominating your midfield could be a mistake.

You have to upgrade your front line. You need a big hitter. Downgrade Baines > Winston and Sanchez > Ramsey will free you up a boat load of cash to swap a front man for Rooney or RVP 😉

It's putting a lot of faith in players new to the PL but I admire you're bravery, it's certainly not a template team that's for sure. Personally I would want at least one tried and tested premium striker as you risk being quickly left behind if the more popular picks fire from the start.

Probably Silva if I had to guess between the two. Only 4 points separated them last season. Tough to predict. I'm going the Yaya route, I think. Opening game against a Newcastle outfit with some new pieces and parts and things to sort out. I like the look of that.

I got hooked on Chelsea. The first year I started watching the Prem (2007 season), they were on TV one day, and for various reasons, I decided to go with them as my preferred squad. And that was without knowing that they were among the powerhouses. I really didn't know much about the Prem at the time. Now, I can't get enough of it.

    Hazard, Eriksen, Ramsey, Shelvey

    Costa, Bony, Giroud.

    Bench - Myhill, Dummett, Albrighton.

    Goalkeeper:

De Gea because of Manchester United's kind opening fixtures.

    Defenders:

    Debuchy - Cheapest Arsenal defender,

Cahill - First 2 matches against Burnley, leicester, atleast one CS guaranteed. Not sure about the three chelsea defenders.

Ward, Curtis - Best buys for their cost.

    Dummett - squad filler

    MF:

hazard - Flat track bully, probable penalty taker

Ramsey - i expect him to continue his form

Eriksen - Poechetino will build the team around him, if he's as smart as i think 😛

Shelvey - best option for a 5.5 price tag (or atleast i think so)

    Albrighton - squad filler

    Forwards:

Giroud - 2 easy opponents in first 3 games, hoping him to start the season with a bang.

    Bony - Easy fixtures

Costa - Easy fixtures. Might take penalty taking duties from Hazard,

Have a big dilemma on whom to include and whom not to,

    Mata - might not start,

Fabregas, Oscar - only one among them might start, not worth the risk

    yaya toure - too costly

Gerrard - tough fixtures (no suarez to get them penalties 😛 )

lallana, sterling, countinho, markovic - might be a victim of squad rotation

I am still confused about the following players:

    Nasri, Silva, Mirallas, Barkley.

    Other questions:

Also is there a better alternative for Shelvey?

Is Dzeko worth replacing Bony or Giroud?

    Will Rooney start under LVG?

    Is RVP fully fit?

Is Sturridge worth the 11.5 price tag?

Please enlighten me with your thoughts Gentlemen 🙂

Downgrading Rooney to Dzeko really gives me a plethora of options. Now I'm stuck on which of my front 8 to bench though.

lads any thoughts for this starting 11?

    DDG - +Myhill
    Cahill-Debuchy-Vlaar +dummett& wisdom
    Hazard-Silva-Snod-Barkley +Albrighton
    Sturridge-Giroud-Bony

    1 mil in the bank.

mourinho has never been decisive on his strikers , so leaving costa out for now

The way I see it, a player over 10M has to be a captain choice if im going to have the player in my team.

Can sanches really be that kind of player?

Picking Rambo or Giroud opens up so many other players tbh.

    Debuchy, Wisdom, Zabaleta, Baines (Bruce)
Yaya Touré, Sánchez, Fábregas, Barkley (Tiote)
