The Community Round Up

The launch of the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game has already sparked the emergence of the so-called “template team”, with squads made up of a small pool of favoured targets. This has prompted a raft of discussions in the Fantasy Football Scout community this week, as many search for that little bit of flair to help smash the template. Bonus points, as well as rotation strategies, were also the focus of much chatter and we look back on all these discussions, whilst also bringing up to date with the community leagues on offer:

The Community Articles

There’s little doubt that Billy Gilmore’s detailed look at the tweaked FPL Bonus Point System was amongst the most popular articles posted over the past seven days. In his extraordinary analysis, Billy takes a sample of games from last season to show how the revised BPS would have influenced the bonus point allocation. The results will certainly prove happy reading for those looking to invest in full backs and wingers.

Another issue vexing our community writers this week has been the abundance of choice in the game, with the major teams investing in a raft of new, potentially high scoring, players. The Puntmaster was on hand with an update of his new Premier League player analysis while Parm took a closer look at some key dilemmas such as the dilemma presented by the Arsenal midfield, now bolstered by the significance presence of Alexis Sanchez.

Rotation continues to come under the spotlight among our community scribes, with The Sarjeant being the latest to assess whether home and away rotation or focusing on fixture strength is the best policy for the season ahead. Another slab of essential pre-season reading.

The Hottest Topics

Each year, shortly after the launch of the FPL game, a similar pattern emerges; teams are drafted, template squads emerge and the urgent call for individualism selections turns from a whisper to a full blown battle cry.

Among those calling for the early template to be broken was Portsmouth Bubblejet via this cautionary post warning against following the herd and sticking up for our most maverick of Fantasy managers. Courtois in the Rye was another calling for Fantasy managers to go against the grain with his look at just why the consensus squad is doomed to fail.

Alexis Sanchez is undoubtedly a template favourite that’s already commanded huge ownership across the Fantasy games. At the time of writing he was the most owned player in FPL so far. But, asks Cynical Steve, is he really worth his £10.5m price tag?

At the other end of the scale, Hull’s new midfield recruit, Robert Snodgrass, is a popular target for those adhering to the template. However, according to our man on the Humber Jaizinho, the former Norwich player has a long way to go to justify his selection. Going by his man in the stand account of Hull’s friendly game against North Ferriby this week, Curtis Davies is far more deserving of template status.

A Chelsea defender is another prime asset and already a popular route, thanks, in no small part, to an eye catching set of early fixtures and a strong record of clean sheets under manager Jose Mourinho. The template dissenters arguing against their inclusion include Il Gladiatore, who wonders whether the likes of John Terry are deserving of essential status. Meanwhile, Mr Anonymous questioned whether new full-back Filipe Luis is nailed on to start.

At the time of writing almost a third of those who have registered to play FPL had drafted in £11.5m priced Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge, to cement his place in template forward lines. Irish Madrista took up the mantle of front line template buster this week, urging Fantasy managers to ignore expensive strikers and look to cheaper, lesser owned options such as Edin Dzeko or Olivier Giroud.

Promoted sides also offer the chance for Fantasy managers to take a punt. The Sarjeant returned to look at the three promoted sides’ clean sheet potential to put forward a good case for investing in QPR defenders as part of a home and away rotation strategy. He also took time to look at the potential hot prospects up top offered up by the promoted sides.

I even found myself, a renowned “Dullard” when it comes to squad selection, scanning the player list for alternatives to help break from the early favourite targets. My hot topic looked at creating a team focusing mainly on players from the ranks of United, City, Arsenal and Chelsea. This strict focus on title contenders becomes a differential in itself, with few Fantasy managers attempting such a collection. As Innsie pointed out, though, such a tactic would dramatically reduce interest in Burnley v Hull fixture. We can’t possibly have that.

Whether your team can be described as “template” or “maverick”, the FPL does, of course, offer us all a chance to start the selection process all over again thanks to the Wildcard. In our discussion on the best time to use the wildcard Fantasy Genius and Billy Gilmore revealed they plan to lay it down during the first international break of the season at the Gameweek 4 stage – a popular window. However, Moin is determined to cling on to it and use it after January to take advantage of the incoming double Gameweeks.

The Community Tournaments

Not surprisingly, we’re seeing a whole host of community leagues crop up as we head into August. Be sure to drop us a line at jonty@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk if you’ve got a league or tournament to plug.

First up this week, Keith Kiely is looking for community members to join his High Flighters FPL league (18100-24576). He is also running a H2H version (18100-90838). Meanwhile, Evilfuk has created a 2006 Veterans League (27-317) in FPL for those who have been playing the game since the 2006/7 season.

In addition, Thomass is running an FPL competition this season. For more details click here.

*** What we know about Mannone ***

I find that looking at direct quotations is the best way of determining the truth, as they are not manipulated by the media. So here is a collection to help you make up your own mind on how secure Vito's starts are.

Lee congerton (Sunderland Sporting Director) -
“Competition for places is healthy and brings out the best in players. We already have a great goalkeeper in Vito Manonne and another one now in Costel. Add to this youngster Jordan Pickford, who recently signed a long-term deal and we have a very strong stable of goalkeepers, which is vitally important in the top flight.”

    Mannone -
"I had a good season last year but that's not enough for me and I want to get better and help the team.
"If I play badly I deserve to be on the bench, if I play well then I deserve to be on the pitch. The manager is straight on this, he knows what I've done last year and I want to prove I'm his number one."

    Panty -
"Everyone wants to be in the first XI, but Vito is a good guy and a good keeper. It's important we all work together to help the team.
I want to be number one in the national team, I'm young and I need to play. It's a good opportunity to come here. I had a good talk with the manager, I know his ideas and ambitions and I hope we can do good things together."

    Mannone -
“I welcome the arrival of another goalkeeper at the club. All big clubs need cover in all positions. The manager told me some time ago that he would be bringing someone else in because two keepers were leaving, but he also told me I am his number one, and that’s good enough for me.”

That's a risk to take. It may be difficult to replace him adequately, if he's your only GK and you don't have money in the bank. It may be more difficult if you are planning the SUN/NEW rotation, as he's the good side of that rotation. I also wouldn't want to spend whole 9.0 to have both SUN GK's.

Thanks GB, have wanted some clarification around Mannone/Panty but was too lazy to do it myself 😛

I would say it generally seems as though Panty was signed as back up, but anything close to an error from Vito and he will be offered a chance to nail down a starting role, imo.

you're missing the point - he was on Crystal Palace FPL list a few days ago and now he's not. Am just asking what happens when he's added back and IF he comes in at 6.0 rather than 5.5.

Are you sure he was on the list a few days ago? He only completed the signing from Cardiff on 24th July.

If he has been on the FPL list since then, his price will be the same when he is restored to it as it was before. It won't change (but it may be different than it was last season).

I think I have the solution.

According to FISO, his price is 5.5, his ownership is 678, but he has not yet signed.

He must have been added prematurely, because FPL and others thought that he had signed when he hadn't.

Possibly, they might have jumped the gun. If he comes in at a price other than 5.5m by GW1, we might have the smoking gun to demand a GW2 wildcard!

Other sources, including Crystal Palace, all confirm that he did sign for them last week.

So perhaps FPL and FISO were wrong in thinking that they had jumped the gun - or else they did jump the gun, but failed to restore him when the signing was completed.

                        Very strange!

(The price won't change, though). 🙂

He talks sense. Attacking football requires the back line moves further up the pitch, where a slow defender like Rio will get exposed. A defensive set up means they will sit deep so an attacker can't burst past Rio, whose positioning will close down the attacker's options.

Sanchez has been an arsenal player for what 3 weeks and he's missing a vital Training camp because he doesnt a visa! Its amazing how these sort of PR stuff get f'ed up at a massive club like Arsenal. Someone is not doing their job

If two players score the same amount of goals in a premier league season, but one plays significantly more minutes, who would you go for?

Giroud and Dzeko both scored 16 goals last year, and it took Giroud a further 1083 minutes more than Dzeko to accomplish this.

The way I see it, more minutes = more points, more chances to assist (Giroud = 9 / Dzeko = 7), more chances involved in, more points for over 60 mins, higher chance of bonus (Giroud = 29 / Dzeko = 25)..

The only counter point I can think of is that if you're getting 16 goals from either of them regardless of minutes played, then its better to play another benched striker in Dzeko's place when he's dropped, and this might pick up an extra goal or two while Giroud flops around the pitch wasting your time.

But if I'm paying over 8 million for a player, I want to rely on HIS output, not his replacement's, and I want to be 100% assured that my strikers are going to play and be involved in their team's goals from the offset when so much is still left uncertain at the start of this game..

So why is Dzeko chosen in 65% of RMTs and Giroud only in 30% *?

The way Dzeko finished the season is persuading people to risk him from the start this year. Both players are threatened for game time (Sanchez and Jovetic)

You haven't considered the new Sanchez factor. City's attacking assets haven't changed whereas Wenger has said that once Walcott is fit, Sanchez may go upfront. I can't see him playing 4-4-2 so that probably means Giroud drops to the bench.

Does anyone think Holtby could be a decent pick this season? He seems to fit Pochettino's style really well because he's so fit, so he should get a lot of starts.

    Krul Foster
    Figueroa Luis Verm (Hooiveld; Diakite)
    Mata Hazard Eriksen Brady (Puncheon)
    Van Persie Giroud Dzeko

Gone with players with good game weeks, good previous average points and RvP. I don't think you can leave him or Aguero from squads they are just too good and full of points.

Defence is short, but other than Chelsea I think teams aren't really guaranteed clean sheets, although Man City will concede less this year with a settled Demi and Mangala and if Gaal sorts out MU they'll be a team to keep an eye on.

    What do you think?

Think I'm obsessed with RvP and Aguero. They're easier to downgrade if they don't fire after first few games until find players on form. That's impacted on balance but i think it's worth it.

Short of certain starters in defence - in fact none are absolutely nailed on. Not sure if Brady's a starter either. Worst case scenario - 7 starters only!

Looking at finding a second keeper to go with Krul and tbh none of them bring much to the table. Thinking of saving .5 and just having the Newcastle keeper as my second one.
Might score a few less points (might not) but the extra .5 could come in handy at some point , usually does
