I have been having a look at the 4.0-priced defensive options and wanted to share some thoughts on some of the best options in terms of security of starts and points potential at the start of the season.

Alex Bruce (Hull)

Bruce is vying with new signing Harry Maguire for a spot alongside Chester and Curtis Davies in the heart of Hull’s defence. As Hull are likely to play either 3-4-1-2 or 5-3-2, Bruce is battling it out with Maguire to start on the left hand side of a centre-back trio. Bruce may just get the nod due to his experience compared to Maguire’s, who has only really featured for Sheffield United in League 1 (and a good FA cup run). However, as Hull are also in the Europa league, expect there to be a lot of rotation between the pair.

Andre Wisdom (West Brom)

Even with Cristian Gamboa’s expected arrival at the Hawthorns, Wisdom may start the first game of the season due to the injuries sustained by Joleon Lescott and Gareth McCauley in the Baggies’ pre-season defeat to Nottingham Forest. Both are expected to miss that match and thus Wisdom, as the fourth choice centre-back and back-up right back, looks likely to start the season, but caution is advised as others return from injury.

Liam Moore (Leicester)

Judging by Leicester’s line-ups in pre-season, Liam Moore is expected to get the nod to start alongside captain Wes Morgan in the heart of the Leicester defence. Although Moore does not have the experience that Matthew Upson and Marcin Wasilewski have, he is expected to start as he provides pace at the back, something which Leicester would not possess with a partnership of Morgan and either of their ageing centre backs, Wasilewski and Upson, who are also priced at 4.0.

Paul Dummett (Newcastle)

Once left-back Davide Santon returns from injury for Newcastle, Dummett will become back-up. However, with Santon injured, Dummett is expected to start for Newcastle in his absence given how successfully he filled in last year. Also his team mate Steven Taylor (also 4.0), judging by pre-season, may start alongside captain Fabricio Colocinni in the centre of the Newcastle back four.

Others worth considering include: Michael Duff (Burnley), Alan Hutton (Aston Villa), Chris Baird (West Brom)

What about Bartley? Of all these I think he is the best with Chico likely to leave

Agreed. If Chico leaves, pre-season is definitely is pointing to a Williams-Bartley partnership.

I think Alan Hutton will probably get the nod at Right back, but can't see us keeping many clean sheets and will probably get booked often. Moore best option for me

It's TM's league, he's probably the guy to give you detailed info, but from my understanding, everyone ubove a certain score continues on in the competition. May be based on the average score.

All worthy of consideration. I think I'm likely to wait to see if they get a regular start in a halfway decent defence and then bring 1 or 2 in.

    1) With Bruce, i'm sure McShane will have say in it too, and Figueroa sometimes acts as the 3rd CB. Think Bruce get less minutes than last season, especially as Chester was injured for a long period, and they now have Europa to contend with.

    2) Think Wisdom will start the season too, but more due to Gamboa's late signing and lack of minutes in pre-season. Could see Wisdom at RB. Don't think the West Brom injuries will be enough to keep them out of the opening game, but i could be wrong. If West Brom go with 5 at the back, Gamboa should in theory get the nod as the RWB, but probably not from the start. There's Olsson, Lescott, McAuley and Dawson for the CB spots too, so would be concerned about Wisdom getting game time there.

    3) Not read much about him, but all the reports suggest he's first choice CB. Could be a decent shout although the opening fixtures are pretty rough.

    4) I would disagree on Dummett filling in succesfully last season. Results' dont seem to suggest that he did: http://i.imgur.com/5oZUuQA.png . Haidara seems to be in a better position to start the season with Santon out i think. Newcastle fans seem to rate him more too. Also don't see Taylor getting a look in now Williamson is back fit.

Read that too. Seems he could well do. Really think Wisdom is nailed on at the start, but Dawson leaving would be good news for his chances at CB too. Reading up on the CB injuries now, and it seems they are quite doubtful for the start of the season, so Wisdom looks good to start in either position

Agree re Dummett. I initially had him pencilled in with Santon out but looks like Haidara is in front of him. I'm currently on Wisdom. Oh the irony.

Hull likely to play 4-4-2 this season with the ince and snodgrass signings.

Taylor won't play with Williamson and mbiwa ahead of him.

    Haidara ahead of dummet.

Liam Moore is probably the only nailed on £4M defender in all honesty.

Pretty poor pickings in that department.

May just spend the extra £0.5m and get another £4.5m rotator.

Also looks like Begovic or Huth are the cheapest ways into Stoke defence, with Bego the safest option.

dummet is not nailed, as it seems newcastle will line up w/
janmaat - colo - williamson -haidara (haidara has been plain lb preseason until santon is back)

    moore is nailed.
    wisdom a long shot.
bruce depends if they play 3-5-2, will have maguire and mcshane to contend with, and still is behind as most prob they'll line up w/
    elmohamady - chester - figueroa - davies - rosenior

Not sure. He played against Southend which was his first game back after the world cup. Apparently they only named 3 subs (strange for pre season if true) vs Athlone and played SWP at RWB. I'm currently on Simpson to rotate with CPL but if Yun was a good chance to start then the 0.5 would come in handy

                Currently this;

                Speroni - Green
                Debuchy - Evans - Mariappa - Simpson - Wisdom
                Sanchez - Mata - Hazard - Siggy - Arnie
                Rooney - Jovetic - Jelavic

                2 debates I am having with myself;

Is doubling up on CPL/QPR rotation stupid? We all know Pullis loves a cleanie but I have a feeling that with Caulker and Rio QPR could be much tighter at the back. Also Green is actually a decent keeper. It's something I didn't do enough of last year, hence I'm considering it.

Siggy and Arnie or Eriksen/Lamela and Albrighton?

                How about you?

    Chico leaves Swansea

Bartley first in line for the CB spot along side Williams

Jodi Amaat maybe give some threat

Until a new stronger CB is signed

So righ now, yeah, Bartley and Moore maybe the more secure cheapies out there

Any thoughts on likely starting defences of Palace and Stoke, it is causing me real problems as I might have to find the budget to swap Mariappa and Cameron to Huth and Ward.
