I have been having a look at the 4.0-priced defensive options and wanted to share some thoughts on some of the best options in terms of security of starts and points potential at the start of the season. Â
Alex Bruce (Hull)
Bruce is vying with new signing Harry Maguire for a spot alongside Chester and Curtis Davies in the heart of Hull’s defence. As Hull are likely to play either 3-4-1-2 or 5-3-2, Bruce is battling it out with Maguire to start on the left hand side of a centre-back trio. Bruce may just get the nod due to his experience compared to Maguire’s, who has only really featured for Sheffield United in League 1 (and a good FA cup run). However, as Hull are also in the Europa league, expect there to be a lot of rotation between the pair.
Andre Wisdom (West Brom)
Even with Cristian Gamboa’s expected arrival at the Hawthorns, Wisdom may start the first game of the season due to the injuries sustained by Joleon Lescott and Gareth McCauley in the Baggies’ pre-season defeat to Nottingham Forest. Both are expected to miss that match and thus Wisdom, as the fourth choice centre-back and back-up right back, looks likely to start the season, but caution is advised as others return from injury.
Liam Moore (Leicester)
Judging by Leicester’s line-ups in pre-season, Liam Moore is expected to get the nod to start alongside captain Wes Morgan in the heart of the Leicester defence. Although Moore does not have the experience that Matthew Upson and Marcin Wasilewski have, he is expected to start as he provides pace at the back, something which Leicester would not possess with a partnership of Morgan and either of their ageing centre backs, Wasilewski and Upson, who are also priced at 4.0.
Paul Dummett (Newcastle)
Once left-back Davide Santon returns from injury for Newcastle, Dummett will become back-up. However, with Santon injured, Dummett is expected to start for Newcastle in his absence given how successfully he filled in last year. Also his team mate Steven Taylor (also 4.0), judging by pre-season, may start alongside captain Fabricio Colocinni in the centre of the Newcastle back four.
Others worth considering include: Michael Duff (Burnley), Alan Hutton (Aston Villa), Chris Baird (West Brom)
