Scout Notes

Scout Scribbles – Merciless City Maul Wednesday

Edin Dzeko and Frank Lampard both bag a brace as City hammer Sheffield Wednesday. Oscar fires Chelsea past Bolton, Roberto Soldado is amongst the goals as Tottenham progress, Emmanuel Riviere scores twice for Newcastle, while Saido Berahino helps West Brom edge past Hull in a five-goal thriller at The Hawthorns.

WEDNESDAY WALK-OVER FOR CITY

Man City recorded a comprehensive 7-0 victory over Championship side Sheffield Wednesday in last night’s Capital One Cup third-round tie. Edin Dzeko and Frank Lampard grabbed braces in the rout, whilst Yaya Toure and Jesus Navas both notched their first goals of the campaign, with the latter also chipping in with two assists.

The Scout Says: Providing Sergio Aguero is fit for the weekend, Dzeko’s two-goal showing will surely convince Manuel Pellegrini to start with two up front against Hull – with the Tigers being breached twice in each of their last three league fixtures, sizeable returns could await the City forward pairing on Saturday. Navas’ performance, meanwhile, brings the 7.3-priced midfielder on to our radars for the first time this season – despite only making one league start thus far, the Spaniard has already tallied two assists, and with Samir Nasri a major doubt for the KC trip, Navas’ form makes him a differential option worth considering. Yaya Toure’s first strike of the season, albeit from the penalty spot, will have offered his dwindling band of owners some comfort, though his 10.8 price tag could certainly be spent elsewhere for now.

OSCAR SENDS CHELSEA THROUGH

Oscar’s first goal of the campaign helped Chelsea advance through to the fourth round of the League Cup with a 2-1 victory over Bolton. Young centre-back Kurt Zouma grabbed the host’s opener, as the likes of Cesc Fabregas, Diego Costa and Branislav Ivanovic were handed the night off by Jose Mourinho.

The Scout Says: It was a profitable night for Mourinho’s men, with a place in the next round of the cup competition booked, the decision to rest key players paying off and Oscar starting to find his feet after an iffy start to the season. Nonetheless, with Fabregas and Eden Hazard so prominent in the Blues’ midfield right now, the Brazilian remains far from our thoughts for the time being. The same can be said for Andre Schurrle who, following his Gameweek 5 strike against City, was afforded the full 90 minutes against Bolton last night, leaving his chances of making the starting line-up against Aston Villa on Saturday highly dubious.

SPURS SAVED BY LATE TREBLE

Tottenham were forced to score three times in the last 20 minutes to advance past Nottingham Forest 3-1 in their Capital One Cup clash last night. Mauricio Pochettino fielded an entirely different side to the one that tasted defeat against West Brom at the weekend, with Ryan Mason, Roberto Soldado and Harry Kane all getting on the scoresheet.

The Scout Says: After a dismal display against West Brom last weekend, Pochettino admitted he will have no qualms over ringing the changes in order to find his best XI. Last night’s selection certainly showed he’s willing to hand fringe players a chance to impress but it’s fair to that those on show did little to strengthen their claims for a starting berth. Whilst the likes of Andros Townsend and Erik Lamela chipped in with an assist apiece, it seems more likely that Pochettino will lean towards last weekend’s starting XI once again. Owners of Nacer Chadli, for example, will be a little more confident of the Belgian’s pitch time against Arsenal in spite of his withdrawal on the hour mark last weekend, with his main rivals for a starting role still struggling for any semblance of form.

BAGGIES FORWARD PAIR DOWN TIGERS

Brown Ideye and Saido Berahino both notched for West Brom as Alan Irvine’s side knocked Hull out of the cup with a tightly-fought 3-2 victory. The former left the field in the 21st minute of the game, however, after injuring himself in scoring the goal.

The Scout Says: The Baggies’ form is picking up after back-to-back wins for the Midlands outfit, and Berahino certainly looks their weapon of choice right now. The 5.5-priced striker hadn’t found the back of the net since his opening-day brace against Sunderland until last night, but with Ideye now potentially set for a spell on the sidelines, the onus is on Berahino to kick on as the Baggies face testing fixtures against Liverpool and Man United in their next three. Centre-back Gareth McAuley also struck in yesterday’s encounter, and the Northern Irishman will be hoping to make his first league appearance of the campaign against Burnley this weekend, though with Joleon Lescott, Craig Dawson and Jonas Olsson also competing for the two spots at the heart of the Baggies’ rearguard, Irvine has a tough decision on his hands in selecting his backline on Sunday.

INCE AND BRADY BREAK SCORING DUCKS

Tom Ince and Robbie Brady supplied the goals for Hull last night, but another poor display at the back cost the Tigers a spot in the next round of the League Cup. Steve Bruce made wholesale changes to the team he selected against Newcastle last Saturday, but rolled out a back-four once again, only to see his side’s dire defensive form since switching from 3-5-2 continue.

The Scout Says: Hull have conceded six times in their last three league fixtures, and with budget favourite James Chester now seemingly out of the first-team picture, Fantasy faith in their backline is at a real low. The performances of Brady and Ince, however, will at least give Bruce some positives to dwell over from last night – both could now press for a greater role than they’ve been offered over the past few Gameweeks when the Tigers welcome City this weekend, though Bruce does have plenty of other attacking midfield options to turn to, with deadline day signings Gaston Ramirez and Hatem Ben Arfa also pushing for inclusion.

RIVIERE AT THE DOUBLE

An extra-time winner from Paul Dummett saw Newcastle overcome Crystal Palace 3-2 in their cup clash last night. However, it was Emmanuel Riviere who stole the show for the Tyneside team with a brace to open his account for the Magpies.

The Scout Says: Whilst Riviere still has plenty of work to do to prove his worth to Fantasy managers after a less than thrilling start to the campaign, he has at least picked a good time to find his scoring boots. With Stoke, Swansea and Leicester up next for the Toon, the Frenchman could be set to profit so long as he can hold off Papiss Cisse in the starting XI, though Riviere’s encouraging performance last night should mean that Alan Pardew is less likely to rush Cisse back into his starting XI. Cisse bagged a brace from the bench last weekend but with Pardew keen to court caution with his pitch time after a long stint on the sidelines, he’s likely to be gradually handed more minutes off the bench until his match sharpness returns.

Gayle in the Goals for Palace

Neil Warnock also handed a number of fringe players an opportunity last night.
Dwight Gayle was amongst the goals for Palace once again with a coolly taken penalty, whilst Sullay Kaikai also scored in the 3-2 home defeat.

The Scout Says: The likes of Wilfried Zaha and Adrian Mariappa also managed the entire 120 minutes against the Magpies, as Warnock also gave Brede Hangeland and Zeki Fryers the chance to impress. With none of the hosts players standing out, though, it seems more likely that Warnock will keep faith in the side that won at Everton last week, with Yannick Bolasie and Jason Puncheon on the flanks and Martin Kelly at right-back once again as he looks to extend his unbeaten league run to four matches.

Di Maria and Welbeck IN for Mata and Rooney OUT ? Worth a 4pt hit ?

    De Gea, Gilks
Cahill, van Aanholt, Williams, Clyne, Wisdom
Sterling, Lamela, Mata, Sigurdsson, El Ahmadi
    Pelle, Diego Costa, Rooney

Worth a 4 point hit to try and get Di Maria in place of Mata ?

    Thanks in advance :

Keeping Rooney too. After LeicesterGate LVG surely can't field 3 forwards (plus 2 AM) again? Rooney as captain won't be dropped. They need to send RVP off for his knee op asap and get Falcao and Rooney firing

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Holding back your wildcard

Every year I've used my wildcard by gwk 9. This year feels different though. Price changes aren't such a factor and cheap options are emerging and staying cheap (Pelle, Tadic, Clyne, Welbeck).

Could this be the first year I hold my wildcard back for the second half of the season double gameweeks?

Who else is holding back their wildcard? Who has done this in the past? Is it effective when used in April/ May when dgwks occur? Or is it still better to use in autumn?

Same here. GW 11 is the latest I've ever made it to.
Agree that this season "feels" different with the price situation. It's just not as tempting to WC early to make heaps of money.
I'm going to try and hold on til a big DGW, simply to see what it feels like!

Had my best ever finish when I held back my wildcard until the late DGWs then scored big in those.

Adopted the same tactic last season and fared badly.

Perfectly possible to triumph or make a pig's ear out of it whichever way you go. Didn't 1st and 2nd in the world last season play it at either end of the season? One after GW1 and one in about GW32?

Yeah I believe that's right. And I think you're spot on because I've read some people who keep it and have major success in the DGWs near the end whereas I think it was Beric who said that last season he kept it til the end and it made little difference to him.

Personally I've never tried keeping it til the end but I think if you use it at the start you can get into the lead of your ML and then it's easier to maintain control as you don't have to find differential transfers and captaincy options.

The biggest driving factor should simply be whether or not you need to use it to fix your team in my view. No point stubbornly holding onto it when your line up is substandard. Equally, no point blowing it early just for the sake of one or two players.

I held mine last year. This year I could feel a slip on the rankings coming so played it now. With the winter wildcard and careful planning, holding it is over rated.

I´ve done and didn´t had the advantage I thought I would, using it for a big DGW, problem was my team didn´t end very different from others as the fixtures were good for the players that had that DGW so the rest of the teams were a bit template, anyway I believe its good towards the run-in only if you want to gain ground and are willing to have as many punts as you want but overall I found it more usefull at the beginning of the season in order to jump in the form teams(if you didn´t already ofc).

I held mine back last year to deadly effect, worked my way to within 50 points of the mini-league lead and then played the WC for the DGW in GW33(I think) and shot into the lead and managed to hold to the end.
It was awesome so I'm going to try it again this year.

There's no best time to use it. I don't actually try hard to use it, I just try to keep my team in such a shape that I don't ever need to use it, and then the DGW pops up and I normally use it then. Last year I used it around week 4 though as my team was a shambles.

I have never managed to save mine beyond GW4 in the last 5 years. This year, however, I have managed to keep it. I have no idea when I will use it, although the original plan was to do so end of GW7. However, if I can keep my rank reasonable, I will save it for a rainy day, preferably for DGWs, or when my team is in a shambles.

I've spent the last few days trying to construct a mock ultimate wildcard team, and its just not worth it right now. It's hard to improve on the roughly template squad we all have right now, most would only make a couple of tweeks...all could be done over two or three weeks with a hit or two.

We would need Alexis Sanchez, Hazard, Yaya, Aguero, Falcao to explode to make it worthwhile

I normally try to save my wc but end up using it by gw6ish cuz I just can't patch my team up any longer. This time I'm fairly happy with my team and if I did wc I would probably only make 3 or 4 changes and most of them in defense. There is always a point in every season when I'm sitting around with my mates saying how we all wish we still had our wc. It also makes me feel like I still have an ace in the hole with my whole ml having already used

Played mine on Sunday after the games. Just wanted to replace Mata with ADM, but also wanted Sterling, needed extra cash for that after I sold Siggy, I also wasn't happy with Rooney dropping deep & wasting 5.5m on Lovren when there is better value out there....so for me that equalled WC. Still not sure if it was the right choice, but I reckon if you wish to make more than 6 changes it's worthwhile.

Have always used in second half (3 years).

Tends to be hit or miss to be honest. Sometimes the opportunity never comes, sometimes the DGW is just a big fail (Hi Pavel Pogrebnyak). And sometimes it bags you an extra 50 points over 2 or 3 weeks.

In 4 seasons I've waited until GW30+ before using my wildcard.

Last season wasn't great for that tactic as there weren't any significant double gameweeks due to a lack of bad weather postponements and too many diddy teams made it through to the FA Cup later stages.

The previous 3 seasons it worked out great as there were loads of great doublers and I could rebuild my whole team with a short term view.

I'll be holding again this season.

I think I've narrowed it down now with some help here but not sure if I should transfer now.
    I have 2 FREE
    A. Caulker and Naismith - > clyne and Ulloa
    B. Caulker and rooney -> clyne and Costa/aguero
    C. Just make 1 (Caulker to clyne)

Team is ready for the week, have a look at it -

    Begovic
    Rojo-N.Taylor-Clyne
    Sigurdsson-Sterling-Mirallas-ADM
    Aguero(C)-Costa-Pelle

Mad to captain Aguero over Costa?

Pelle deserving a second look if you've got him. Especially with news that the QPR midfield is facing an injury crisis of sorts.

I've toyed with the idea of Aguero(C) and I still think he's a better option than Costa. But Costa's ownership makes the risk too high.

But I have to allow for the fact that what I think might not be right, or luck might go against him (or in favour of Costa).

The cost of being wrong is too high. Whereas the cost of being right but not acting on it is low - everyone else gets a captain blank too.

McCarthy is all the rage for a 4m keeper, the feeling on here is he will eventually replace Green.
I own Wanyama, be careful there, he seems to be sharing starts with Cork.
I would try and squeeze in a SOT attacker purely due to fixtures.

How is everyone feeling about Moreno?

Liverpool hitting the brakes is making me jittery ahead of the derby, but the fixtures they have are good and he always carries an attacking threat.

Sold him this week after only 2 weeks in my team. Sometimes it's best just to accept you've made a mistake and move on quickly.
Liverpool are just going to keep on conceding.

On the one side, Liverpool look pathetic & the back and are likely to keep leaking goals in.

On the other side, they have decent fixtures, and most importantly, who are you going to get for him?

I think it would be a waste of a FT, 7S.

        That's a very fair point.

I don't know why, but i'm in this 'trimming the fat' phase, just downgrading everyone and banking the money.

I saw a nice, shiny Aguero in the window and I like the idea of binge spending - I've got the money - but for some strange reason this season i am enjoying the bargain hunting more.

I wish I had never set eyes on him 😆

I genuinely thought Brendan was brighter than he has been regarding defence. I thought he'd tighten them up to compensate for scoring fewer goals. He's perfectly capable of running a tight defence, he did it at Swansea (remember Vorm @ 4.0m?). But he's being stubborn and his personnel aren't helping.

He's gone as soon as I can do it.

Lovren has made a ropey start and Sakho continues to look like a big lummox.
Moreno has made mistakes leading to goals.
Mignolet looks like David James mark 2. And he will probably put GJ back in the team when fit 🙁

        Worrying times.
