HOW CAN EACH TEAM QUALIFY FOR THE KNOCKOUTS?

As we head into the final matchday of the group stages, we still have 10 teams vying for 4 knockout spots, with no one team guaranteed qualification yet. It can’t get any closer. Here’s a rough take on the scenarios in each group.

Group A

Even though England are the only team with 9 points in Group A, it is closer than it seems because of everyone’s goal difference (GD) being so close (within 50 goals, which is barely anything). It is almost a must-win game for England, as a loss will likely see them below two other teams on GD. A win will see England qualify irrespective of goal difference.

Amongst the remaining teams on six points, Belgium are favorites in the group, as a win will likely see them through on Goal Difference. Spain face Malaysia and will also be confident of registering a win in another must-win clash for them. With heavyweights Australia and India going against each other, they are in the same predicament as they will need to register comfortable wins for either to qualify or hope that one of Spain or Belgium lose their games.

As you can see, it’s incredibly tough to call Group A at the moment with every one of the five teams needing a win to qualify.

Salma’s Predictions – Belgium narrowly defeat England and Spain defeat Malaysia, to go through on goal difference, with four teams ending up on 9 points.

Group B

In Group B, New Zealand sit at the top of the table as strong favorites to qualify. They are all but through, thanks to their remarkable GD. However, if Argentina win their game, NZ need to ensure they don’t lose to Netherlands by more than 63 goals. Argentina will want to win their final game or hope that Netherlands loses to NZ. Netherlands will have to defeat NZ to qualify and hope that Argentina lose their game. If Argentina win their clash, Netherlands will need to defeat NZ by more than 63 goals to oust NZ of the Cup.

South Africa’s best chance of qualification relies on NZ defeating Netherlands and South Africa defeating Argentina by more than 83 goals. Germany face an uphill task for qualification. Besides from just winning their clash against South Korea, they need to make up on their GD. With South Korea eliminated, rumors has it that they will give it their all for the cause of FFS teams in the final matchday.

Salma’s Predictions – Argentina top the group with a comfortable win against South Africa. NZ lose their games yet qualify on goal difference, with Netherlands coming really close to ousting them out of the cup.

I don't think the Aussie have done quite enough

    I calculated 29 point deficit after auto-subs

Caulker makes back 12 but no way Guzan is enough, could come down to how many Hutton's we have

I think there are new twists to the NEDvsNZ game.
We have a Chester off bench for Hutton, they have Wilson (likely)?

Doesn't know the exact points, though. Anyone around?

Krul yellow, Heaton and DDG both made exactly 3 saves, RVP's goal bumped Fab up the baps list but yes, that was probably the most unnecessary way to lose out :/

Good evening ladies and Gentlemen, sports fans and South Africa,

What a few days of football! Commiserations to South Africa who were excellent and in the end unfortunate. Our Superior Aguero's didn't give us the start we quite wanted but we held the lead throughout, we comfortably won the battle of the "no Costa scenario" and with Hazard blanking and their Ivan's sat on clean sheets things were looking tense as they were set to eat into our lead...but then came those two minutes of mayhem...the Ivan Red and Man U goal.... The exileration in our camp was pretty much summed up best by Super Captain Spectrum Marradonna who broke the silence of fevered celebrations as toilet roll still fell from the sky with the line "I just mummified myself in bog roll". It was pandemonium...the realisation: "We've done it!" Exclaimed Woy of the Albicelestes from the bench, his words muffled by the reams of bog roll that had buried the team like a soft, double quilted Aloe Vera Avalanche (only the best!)

We decided out of respect we'd delay the presser until tonight incase Hutton scored 6 hat tricks...to rub salt into the wounds he was forced out last minute with injury. We were a little shell shocked with frantic double and triple checking of the numbers from the likes of VC Sunny and myself, still wary of committing a Billy Gilmore "Walk in the park ©" moment. We knew we had done it but it wasn't quite sinking in. We dared to believe...we conceived...and we have achieved!

The knockout stages await...there lies just 2 hurdles between here and the winner lifting the trophy aloft! We still dare to dream... Whilst flagons of vino were still being merrily glugged down last night, as bog rolls were being flung high into the evening air in increasingly creative and ingenious ways, deep in the quiet and calm of the boardroom plans were already being hatched. The management already had their attentions firmly focused on the semi final. The machine that is super Captain Spectrummaradonna began to scout what could await us.

Team selection has not been taken lightly. Spectrum, VC Sunny and myself have settled into a very thorough and well honed routine and now we've found an extra gear. These victories haven't happened by accident and so I'd again like to thank Spectrum and Sunny on behalf of the whole team for the incredible amount of time, heart and effort they put in week in week out. We salute you!

We thank all the teams that sadly depart the tournament for the part that they played. It's been an incredible tournament so far. The competition was hard fought, so many matches going to the wire right until final knock out qualification. The game has been played in the right spirit and the banter has been fantastic. See you all next time!

That concludes our post match presser but we will return soon, for now us Gauchos have the serious business of preparing for the Semi Final!

    Well done lads!

    Vamos!!!!!!!!!!!

To be humble in defeat is similar...but a bit different also. To be humble is to have or to show modest or low estimate of one’s own importance... There's no inference of an implied superiority as their is in being magnanimous.

This is where I disagree with general opinion. If humble is to be used as a measure of ones own importance, then honesty is a far more appropriate word. And by that logic, humble can only refer to those who have humility despite their superiority. Its an understanding that everyone has flaws.

Great presser as always Ellipsis. Obviously my exact words were in Spanish but you were good enough to redact it and highlight the key message that I was trying to convey. We really need to sort out the dug-out for our home games as I've spent the day pulling out splinters from my.....upper leg after the bench collapsed. It really is bittersweet to knock out our Dutch friends like that... You guys deserved to reach the knockout stages for sure.

In saying that, our rampant goalscoring form early on in the competition has been rewarded, so congrats to my fellow Kiwis. The match against the Netherlands was the wake-up call we needed, even the best of teams have off-days and I'm glad we've got ours out of the way before things start to get serious.

I must say a massive well done needs to go to the Argentine's for topping our group, your form has been mightily impressive throughout.

What a difference one point makes.

Can anyone believe the late YC to a Dutch player (Krul) was the reason Netherlands got knocked out? You really can't make this up.

Curious to get feedback. Especially from folks who've played in previous team cups.

    Do you prefer?
    A) shorter group stage + longer knockouts (like WC and Beach WC)
    B) longer group stage + shorter knockouts (like this HWC)

Having managed this one and beach soccer one, I have found it easier having excess players each week, firstly it gives the manager something to do and feel more involved but it also gives a kind of safety net when inevitably people loss interest or their involvement drops.

The only thing I would say about this one is having 15 players, it wasn't easy to give them all a fair amount of games, even though that isn't priority people are more likely to stay involved and join future games if they feel they are a part of it. I know it is a hard one to get right in that the fewer players per squad the less people can take part. Obviously for England team going on to win it and then the champions league games afterwards means we will use our full squad. 😉

And a thought I just had there, what is possibility of doing a tourney like one of those ex pros 6 a side things they used to have on sky. Masters I think it was called, was tennents sixes up in Scotland, typical of Scotland to get a drink company to sponsor a football event.
But do it with selected original teams from all past tourneys. Probably really hard to organise, but was just thinking that with so many references on here about previous teams it might be idea.

Interesting thought there JTD. Possibility for a future cup. Again, smaller and privileged cups would make it tough for more people to take part, which is key really considering how FFS has grown. Long gone are the days of FFS CL where just 32 managers took part.

But I like the concept, thanks! 🙂

    FINAL GROUP STANDINGS

    Here we go then.

    https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Aul0PglyD-ESdFhCb19CWWo3LVpxcUVWMGVIOHdkNHc&usp=drive_web#gid=1

Australia find themselves short by 24 goals in GD to Spain in Group A, while England qualify top of the group. England topping the group in a sporting competition? Only happens in the FFS world!

Remarkable scenes in Group B as New Zealand qualify over Netherlands by a goal difference of JUST ONE POINT. I don't think this has ever happened in the time I've organized these comps over the couple of years. Stay strong, Oranje! Also everyone who've not managed to make the cut, hope you will come back with a bang in future cups (and still hang about in the spirit of the game.

Meanwhile please join me in congratulating the 4 semifinalists. Considering the tremendous fight all teams (Yes, Korea too) have put up, you know they've won the right to be there. Enjoy the hysteria tonight and gear up for the crunch games 🙂

Congrats to England and Argentina finishing top of their groups. If Korea were still in I would passionately hate you guys, but since we are not, I will confess that I admired these teams the most, especially their managers. In my mind they epitomize what the tournament is about, not just winning games, but also caring enough to make things more fun for everyone.

Congrats also to my arch enemy Zep and his boys. Although they are evil bastiches, they improved the game by setting the bar higher for everyone else. I hope future teams learn from how they went about building the team to beat.

Congrats also to Spain. Really Spain? I didn't even know there was a Spain in the tournament.

    ENR

This is the rough outline of my DRAFT STYLE TOURNAMENT idea if you ever fancy running it...

The tournament itself would run on the same lines as this Hockey Tournament with whatever theme you like. The twist is in TEAM SELECTION.

Basically, you find a captain for each team as normal and then anyone else who want to be involved registers (with some sort of internet form) giving their FFS name, team link and email address.

Once registration period closes you put all the entrants on a Google Doc (FFS name and team link).

Then the draft starts (can be a slow draft or live, or a mixture). The draft order is randomly selected and is done in snake style 1....8 8.....1 etc. Each manager on their turn picks a player from the available poo and you provide their email address to the manager. As he acquires teammates he can, if he wishes, involve them in the draft process discussions as well. This carries on until each team has their full quota of 15 (or whatever) including the manager himself.

You could, if you wanted to be really clever, allow player trades / draft pick trades but this might be too much for some!
