Captain Sensible – Gameweek 23

Our pre-Gameweek members article which focuses on the main captaincy contenders arrives once again this evening. As always, we take a three-part approach which includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

Alexis Sanchez is the runaway leader of this week’s poll as Arsenal prepare to host Aston Villa on Sunday afternoon. Selected by 50%, the Chilean has produced returns in eight of his nine home starts this season and served up four double-figure hauls (13, 16, 10, 19) at the Emirates already – Villa have conceded in five of their last six road trips and look up against it here. This was, of course, prior to Arsene Wenger’s admission that the Chilean is a hamstring doubt for the weekend and will be assessed, forcing many to reconsider their selection.

Angel Di Maria (8%) and Wayne Rooney (4%) find a place in the top four for United’s home match with Leicester. Neither player has much form to shout about – the Argentine has just two assists in his last eight league appearances, whilst Rooney has blanked in five of his last six. The latter has, however, been consistent in front of his own fans and earned points in six of his eight Old Trafford appearances.

It’s fair to say that the vast majority – if not all – of Diego Costa’s votes were prior to news over the last day or two. Charged by the FA over his stamping incident with Emre Can, he has subsequently contested the decision and it won’t be until tomorrow before we know the outcome, with a ban still looking likely. Prior to all that, he was the Chelsea player of choice as the league leaders face champions City at the Bridge – over 5% opted for the Spain international, who is in the middle of a purple patch after racking up five goals and a pair of assists in the last five. Just 2% are favouring Eden Hazard after back-to-back blanks, though 3% reckon Sergio Aguero is worthy of our consideration against a defence that’s conceded just once in their last eight at Stamford Bridge.

Palace’s Dwight Gayle is also in contention. Selected by 3%, the budget striker has 24 points in two appearances under Alan Pardew and hosts an Everton side with a single clean sheet in the last 12 outings. Tottenham’s Harry Kane is backed by a similar number ahead of a tricky trip to West Brom – having scored in five of his last six on the road, though, the youngster looks the likeliest to breach the Baggies backline. Olivier Giroud has also been backed by 3% after scoring four times in his last five – if Sanchez is indeed ruled out, his output looks key for the Gunners.

Is Walcott too big a risk this week? Want to take a left field punt before I play my WC.

I think Wenger will take this opportunity to rest Sanchez especially with Spurs next week.

Its a good one week punt to take. Obviously it carries a risk, but I would go for it with your WC in pocket.

If Alexis misses out, the captaincy is wide open.

Hoping bringing in Giroud (C) works out a bit better than it did last time...

Similar to me. I guess I'd want to wait in your case, because I wouldn't want to sell Rooney before Leicester at home, but I wouldn't want to keep him long term either. But if you have no problem dumping him, it may be worth pressing the button.

Cheers, that's one of my considerations too. Would you VC rooney then? Obviously hoping alexis plays but don't think I can stand a 6th week in a row of 1 or 2 pt captain choices...

Also just saw your post and think you should hold steady as well.

So freak the January wildcard or hold steady?

    Pants (Elliot)

    Terry-Clyne-Wisdom (Mangala-Hutton)

    Sanchez-Cazorla-Hazard-Eriksen (Downing)

    Aguero-Austin-Kane

I've got an okish 11 with Downing ready to come in for Sanchez, and I don't really have any idea what I want on my wildcard, but looking at my team's fixtures this week I'm not expecting big things...

If Costa is not available for the next four GWs, then that must give Loic Remy a chance to get a run in the side.
Drogba is OK for the odd game, but can't play week in week out.

Last season he scored 14 goals in 26 appearances for an average Newcastle side.

      Di Maria
Would also consider Mannone -> Ospina and ditch Kos

Apart from Defoe, this is exactly the front eight I was going to pull the trigger on today and I'm having the same issue with Di Maria/Oscar in the blank spot.

His recent form makes such a hefty price really hard to justify, but those fixtures are hard to ignore. In situations like that, I usually base it on how much the spare cash from taking the cheaper option would improve the rest of my team, and in my case the answer would be "not very", so I'm going for Di Maria. You, however, could potentially do Jones > Terry or similar should you go for Oscar.

    So GW28:

    QPR - ARS/TOT

No chance you'd touch the defence. Maybe Austin, but that's it.

    TOT - SWA/qpr

Tasty! Definitely worth doubling up on attack, maybe even get a defender as well, leaky as they are. They're at Old Trafford in GW29, but then play LEI/bur/AVL/new, so no worries about holding onto them after the DGW.
