The Weekend Team News

A sceptical Arsene Wenger admits Alexis Sanchez is determined to prove his fitness in time for tomorrow’s North London derby. Morgan Schneiderlin and Victor Wanyama could return for Southampton’s trip to QPR. Everton could welcome back James McCarthy for the Merseyside derby. Connor Wickham is set to miss Sunderland’s trip to Swansea. Alan Pardew remains without Mile Jedinak for the weekend, while Ron Vlaar could make a return to action as Chelsea roll into town:

As Arsenal gear up for tomorrow lunchtime’s trip to Tottenham, Arsene Wenger confirmed yesterday that the Gunners would be without Alexis Sanchez due to an ongoing hamstring injury. This morning, however, Wenger initially ruled out the Chilean again only to backtrack and suggest he will be assessed:

“Sanchez is out but he wants to have a go (in training) today. It’s not easy to tell him he’s not playing. He wants to play – he’s so keen. He feels he can defy the medical people because he is so keen to play. I don’t know if he can. I will see today.”

Elsewhere, the Gunners boss revealed Danny Welbeck is back in the group, with the rest of the squad expected to be the same as the one that played Aston Villa, according to Wenger. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Jack Wilshere remain out for the weekend, though are closing in on a return to full training.

Southampton have received a big boost ahead of their visit to Loftus Road, with Ronald Koeman confirming that midfielders Morgan Schneiderlin and Victor Wanyama should be available for selection, after recent injury troubles. There is less positive news on Toby Alderweireld though, with Koeman ruling the Belgian out of Southampton’s next two league fixtures. New signing Filip Djuricic will also miss out at the weekend, as he’s still awaiting his work permit.

Roberto Martinez believes James McCarthy will be in Everton’s squad for the Merseyside derby, having refuted suggestions that the midfielder had suffered a setback on his return from injury. Meanwhile, Tim Howard has made a return to training, though is unlikely to be risked for the weekend and will instead be given an extra week to get fit, according to Martinez. The Toffees boss has also revealed that Leon Osman and Steven Pienaar are expected to make their returns from injury and join the rest of the squad soon.

Sunderland striker Connor Wickham has been ruled out the trip to Swansea with a calf injury picked up in midweek. Gus Poyet is also sweating on the fitness of Adam Johnson, Jack Rodwell and Emanuele Giaccherini for the weekend, with the trio all rated as “50-50” to be involved.

Alan Pardew has confirmed that skipper Mile Jedinak will miss the trip to Leicester, after returning from the Asian Cup with a sore ankle.

Ron Vlaar and Joe Cole could return from injury for Aston Villa ahead of the weekend visit of Chelsea. The pair had been absent with knee and hamstring injuries respectively, but are expected to be in contention to face the Blues should they come through their final training session today.

All this and more has now been updated in the Team News section ahead of tomorrow’s deadline. Keep an eye on our official Twitter Stream as breaking news unfolds.

Fabregas to Silva for a hit, yay or nay?

(or maybe Sterling but I don't like his fixtures)

Hmm, I think losing one of those for Silva makes sense. Depends how much value you'd drop on them I suppose, tough call.

yh cheers, think i'm going to do it. Not losing value on Fab as he went in recently, more concerned about price drops because I've already left it too long!

    Wildcard Top Tips and Pitfalls

Those of you who are regular Scoutcast listeners will know that my winter wildcard team has come under discussion from Mark and Granville in recent weeks. It has even been branded as a 'failure' after one week, something I’ve taken with a pinch of salt on the back of an 86pt Gameweek and return to the top 2K. 😉

But while the ‘failure’of my wildcard may still open to debate it got me thinking about exactly when and why a wildcard should be considered a success or failure, what strategies are needed to make it a success and what pitfalls to avoid.

Here’s my top tips and pitfalls to avoid for those still to wildcard or looking to correct any wildcard errors they may have already made.

    Follow the fixtures.

Looking ahead over the next six weeks the teams where your heavy hitters would be best to come from Arsenal, ManC and Chelsea (although be aware they have a blank fixture in Gameweek 27). The worst places for heavy hitters over the coming six Gameweeks in terms of fixtures are from Liverpool and Tottenham. Although for form over fixtures fans one of Sterling, Coutinho or Sturridge may be worth considering.

In terms of budget and midpriced players the teams to look to include West Brom, Sunderland and Stoke.

Think ahead as well. Keeping one or two players with poor immediate fixtures but a good run thereafter is fine. Plus these players can often spring surprises. This is why currently I still have Downing and Austin. I can afford to carry them for a while or move them out – I have that choice thanks to having a good sprinkling of players with good next six fixures.

A Wildcard should be judged after several weeks.

A wildcard can never be considered a failure after one week. It is not a one week move, it is designed to set you up for the coming weeks. All further transfers will stem from it. If you have ensured you have lots of starters, most of which with good fixtures then you afford yourself the chance of a luxury transfer to take advantage of latest trends. I did that in Gameweek 23 by swapping Silva for Cazorla, who I captained. That move would not have been possible if I had not have just wildcarded the week before.

Gameweek 27’s blank and the Gameweek 28 double is a crucial consideration. We already know that Spurs and QPR have a double in Gameweek 28. We know that Che, Spurs, QPR and Leic have a blank in Gameweek 27. Think ahead to this and pick a good cheap defender or fifth midfielder with a good fixture in Gameweek 27. If you want to hang on to three assets from among Chelsea and Spurs’ ranks then you will need your bench players to shine that week. Among the teams with cheap assets plus a good Gameweek 27 are Burnley, New, Villa, Stoke, Sou, Swa and Sunderland (who even though they face ManU have a tendency to unexpectedly beat top teams).

A High Scoring Bench Is Inevitable

If you have got your wildcard right and packed it with players with strong fixtures and form then an unwelcome consequence will be a high scoring bench. I’m always a glass half full person when it comes to bench points. I’d obviously prefer to see those points in my XI, but I much prefer having bench points and knowing that I own players with the potential to do well, rather than looking at a bench and starting XI that are both full of duds.

Is Your New Team Better Than Your Old One?

This is the final and crucial test. Some wildcarding this week will have teams stricken by injury poor form or succumbed to rotation. If your new team addresses those, gives you flexibility, has a good spread of heavy hitters with good fixtures and good budget options to call on in Gameweek 27 then your wildcard is very likely to be a resounding success.

Finally, feel free to let us know what your top wildcard tips are as well as the key pitfalls to avoid? How has your wildcard gone?

I agree that a wildcard is a platform to proceed from and should be judged over several weeks.

For instance if you can settle your defence (which is easier in a wildcard than at the beginning of the season because you have a better idea of team selection) you can use your FTs to rotate more expensive players in midfield and upfront according to form and/or fixtures.

In particular a wildcard team should be planned against forthcoming blank GWs and DGWs.

It is also important to take a view on how you believe player performance in FPL terms will change in the next period. There is no point in constructing a squad to do well in the games that have already been played. You need one to do well in the games that are yet to be played, and that's not necessarily the same thing.

One other view I have (which kind of marries with the first point) is not to carry any injury doubts in a wildcard team. You are just running the risk of wasting points and FTs by doing that. FTs are points at this stage of the season. You don't want to be using them for squad repair if you can help it.

Form has to be relevant as well, and circumstances like Sturridge returning. I think Sterling is now an excellent pick, good value too and I can still get 2 Chelsea, 2 City and 3 Arsenal players

I've ammended that slightly to take into account those who favour form over fixtures. Purely on fixtures Liverpool should be avoided...but given form I think one of Sterling/Sturridge or Coutinho is worth a go. I wouldn't double up though given those fixtures. With Spurs its the blank that's a worry then the double. Its a fine line. Personally I've got Kane and will keep and then in Gwk 28 look to get Eriksen and one other either with 2 frees or with a hit..I wouldn't advise doubling up on Spurs though ahead of that.

Well, the thing is, if one gets Rose instead of Ivanovic ...

              1. You bench less value in 27
              2. You have a head start for the double.

Sunderland are exactly the kind of team to get a result from that. either clean sheet in a 0-0 or a win. I'd be happy to play PVA for example against MANU. Granted though that may not find favour among ManU fans. 🙂

My tip would be to jettison any injured players. With Sanchez, it's a lot better waiting for him to get for when he's not in your team.

It only costs 1 transfer to get them back. If you sell him sheet a WC, that's 1 transfer out, and 1 in.

There is no such thing as a luxury transfer after a WC. You should instead save a transfer to capitalise on the blank/DGW.

I think you will find Stoke has a strong GW27 fixture, not Hull 😉

On a WC now and it's very tempting to be maverick and loose. Play it safe, be conservative, do the sensible thing. Too many punts could set you well back

Depends when you took the wildcard actually.

I was pushed into taking my wildcard a week early in GW 23 by the Sanchez injury and the Costa ban. That gave me an additional week before GW 27 when I know I will need 2xFTs. A transfer this week (first after wildcard) is possible for me, though I may well save it.

However if I was wildcarding this week I would definitely need to save my FT next GW in order to start getting ready for GW 27.

Great post. Another pitfall I'd like to add is this: there is no such thing as a perfect team.

You raise a good point on good decisions leading to luxury transfers. No matter how long you spend on it, and how perfectly set up your XV is for the rest of the season, you get a free transfer every week and you're going to want to use them.

I'm against enabling picks like Baird, Cork and Albrighton, or rotation risks in general - I say this as someone who is now carrying Chambers after putting him in my GW22 WC team. Partly that was because I could afford him, but the better choice would've been a dull, nailed on defender and some money ITB.

Transfers are precious, and a player that is going to quickly become a passenger, forcing you to take them out in GWs with blanks where your bench is needed is not a good idea. Skip on that must have combination of big attackers - you can't have them all, and pretty soon, you won't want them all, but a nailed on defence and bench can be left for the rest of the season, letting you make moves like Silva > Cazorla (C) every week, using your transfers on positions where the points are.

One I'm considering this week is another luxury transfer Silva back in again for Sanchez...and then maybe Sanchez back again when fit. Sounds crazy but unless other injuries occur I've essentially created a floating midfield slot that can be filled with whoever has the best fixture this week.

One of the big changes this season is price falls and rises lessening - means hokey-cokey moves are possible and won't break the bank.

100% this - I've got 4 x 8.5M plus midfielders that can be interchanged on fixture now that my cheap as chips, nailed on (ish) defence has been sorted via the WC.

Might do Giroud - Austin for Tuesday though which will alter the structure a bit....

Obviously injuries, suspension, form, players being dropped, blanks and DGWs will force a majority of your transfers over the season. If you have a truly 'free' transfer though, surely that's the ideal way to play it.

Keeping Sanchez on the wildcard when the likelihood was he would miss 3 games out of the 16 remaining (and then most likely some more through rotation, especially around CL games) would have been insane.

People are playing points scored so far rather than playing for the points that will be scored over the remaining 15 games. Sanchez is far away from essential and his "key man" status at Arsenal (which has helped him enormously in FPL terms) has gone now that Walcott and Ozil are back. Times have changed.

    Panti
    Terry Wisdom Clyne
    Sanchez JWP Haz ADM
    Kane Kun(C) Giroud
    (Hamer PVA Boyd Baird)

    2.8 ITB & 1FT

    a) Sanchez > Silva/Caz (would lose 0.5 on Sanchez who I'd defo want back)
    b) Boyd > Mane (bench JWP and he'll come in if Sanchez doesn't play)
    c) ADM > Silva/Caz

My friend had a 160 during a DGW. I suspect someone here would've had a 170/180 maybe that week. That's as high as I know.

I had 175 in DGW last year with Yaya captain (4 goals in 2 games)

I think some managers cracked the 200 mark that GW

I'm reposting my comment, there's not enough background quotes on Alexis in this article.
A quote from the BBC website about Sanchez. Scout tweets seem to be confusing people and doesn't tell the whole story.

"As we mentioned, Arsene Wenger will be without Alexis Sanchez, but the Gunners boss says he has had easier chats with players than having to inform the Chile international he would not play.
"It's not easy to tell him he's not playing. He wants to play - he's so keen," says Wenger. "But we have enough offensive power. We don't need to worry about being short on that front."
Wenger also praises his midfielder Mesut Ozil and says: "He has worked extremely hard physically to be fit and he's benefitting from it now.""

No, because he's an attacking midfielder, who occasionally plays as a 2nd striker, and is also on penalties.

He also has good fixtures and is clearly in a bit of form.

You find one that looks better for the "foreseeable future".

His stats aren't that great and I would not imagine he would be anywhere near as popular as he is if he didn't score the hattrick. However, he did score it, so I guess the attention is warrented. I think I'm going to plump for Puncheon though, much better stats.

Ivan to Kompany, and get Zouma on WC.
I'd like to get Kompany especially for this GW but it's the only way to get him.I know he's not having his best season, but against Hull, I think, it's the perfect game for him
