This Much We Know – Gameweek 27

We cast an eye back over the previous round of fixtures this Monday lunchtime to assess the lessons learned. Wayne Rooney’s impact up top for United, Jason Puncheon’s central role for Palace, Ronald Koeman’s brief flirtation with a two-man frontline, and the importance of Papiss Cisse and Peter Crouch to Newcastle and Stoke respectively.

Rooney looks back in business…
Stationed up front again in the continued absence of Robin van Persie, the United skipper’s brace took his tally to ten for the season despite mainly being utilised in central midfield. Rooney’s two-goal haul ended an eight-match run where he failed to produce any returns but his display in a more advanced berth surely staked a claim for an extended stay up front, given that fellow forward Radamel Falcao has netted four times this term.

Puncheon’s thriving in the middle…
Alan Pardew’s decision to move to 4-1-4-1 and shift Puncheon off the flank and into a central role is already looking a masterstroke. With Wilfried Zaha and Yannick Bolasie handed the wide roles and drawing plenty of fouls from opponents, Puncheon – thanks to set-piece duties – served up trio of assists in the 3-1 win at West Ham to highlight his growing influence on the Eagles’ attack. Since Pardew’s first match in charge in Gameweek 21, Puncheon has created more goal scoring opportunities (22) than any player in the league; quite clearly, then, his creativity from both dead-ball situations and open play have boosted his Fantasy prospects in recent weeks.

Di Maria’s dispensable…
Hauled off at the break after an unimpressive display against Sunderland, it’s clear that the big-money buy can’t just rely on reputation alone to guarantee pitch time. Van Gaal’s ruthless decision to withdraw Di Maria and replace him with Adnan Januzaj helped the Red Devils secure a 2-0 win, as the young Belgian enhanced his own chances by earning an assist. Already, over 43,000 FPL managers have taken their cue from Van Gaal and parted company with the Argentine, who has now gone 14 league outings without a goal.

Van Aanholt isn’t out of the picture just yet…
After being benched against West Brom, the Dutchman’s immediate return to Gus Poyet’s starting XI suggests it’s a little premature to write off his prospects. The Black Cats boss surprisingly dropped Santiago Vergini – who had started every match since Gameweek 2 – in order to switch Anthony Reveillere to the right and bring back Van Aanholt. Saturday’s team sheet may just be enough to persuade the Dutchman’s owners to hold now – with a trip to Hull followed by three home clashes (AVL, NEW, CPL) in the next five, the fixtures are certainly in his favour.

Cisse seems central to Carver’s plans…
The Newcastle front man’s winner against Villa took his tally to 11 goals in just 992 minutes this season, with his average of 90.2 minutes per strike quicker than Sergio Aguero (96.2). Whilst former boss Alan Pardew was cautious with Cisse’s pitch time due to an ongoing knee problem, John Carver is leaning on the Senegal striker far more often – Cisse never started more than two successive league matches for Pardew but has now been named in the Magpies’ first XI in each of the last three Gameweeks.

Crouch is invaluable to Potters…
Most of the pre-Gameweek talk centred around Victor Moses and Jon Walters but, ultimately, it was the big target man who did the damage against Hull. Emerging from the bench with less than half an hour remaining, Crouch netted for the third successive appearance and has now played a part in 50% of his side’s goals when on the pitch this season. Hughes’ decision to use Crouch sparingly (he’s started just one of the last six Gameweeks) may deny Fantasy managers of an option for our third striker slot but his canny substitutions are keeping the Potters’ momentum on course.

Koeman’s willing to tinker…
The Saints boss had hinted at a move to the middle for Sadio Mane and was as good as his word after starting with a 5-3-2 formation for the trip to West Brom. After going a goal down within two minutes, Koeman’s new system had little time to make an impact against the resilient Baggies and by 25 minutes, he’s scrapped the approach, subbing off Florin Gardos and bringing in Eljero Elia as he returned to a 4-2-3-1. With three strong home fixtures in five (CPL, BUR, HUL), Koeman may yet return to a two-man frontline and go on the offensive as he looks to end his side’s woes in the final third – it’s just a single goal in five for the St Mary’s side now.

Sterling and Coutinho are the new “SAS”…
It’s a sign of his side’s flourishing form that Brendan Rodgers could afford to drop Daniel Sturridge to the bench for yesterday’s visit of City and still pick up all three points. Philippe Coutinho took his tally to three goals, five assists and 12 bonus points in 12 appearances since the move to 3-4-2-1 – the Brazilian had previously earned a single goal in the first 15 Gameweeks but his influence is growing by the week as he finally delivers the returns his underlying stats have always threatened. Sterling’s pair of assists means he’s earned points in six of his last eight now, whilst Sturridge was limited to a 15-minute cameo as the Reds extended their unbeaten run to 11 league matches, with Rodgers’ side showing they can thrive without either of last season’s big-hitters on board.

Ozil’s return is suffocating Sanchez…
The Chilean’s season continues to stutter, with a series of four successive blanks persuading many to contemplate a transfer out. It’s no coincidence that Sanchez’ downturn in form has come at a time when Mesut Ozil has returned to the Gunners’ starting XI – the German has served up two goals and five assists since Sanchez last picked up points, whilst Olivier Giroud has delivered four goals and a couple of assists over the same period. With Santi Cazorla mainly reliant on penalties and Theo Walcott once again reduced to the role of a bench-warmer, the Ozil-Giroud combination continues to offer strong alternatives to those willing to look beyond the 31%-owned Sanchez for Arsenal coverage.

He could be carrying an injury but there is nothing to suggest that either . There will be a presser later and unless Wenger says he needs a rest there is no need to worry

What have we all learned for next season then?

Obviously each season is different (not just in scoring with the BPS etc) with seasons past having the power 5 in midfield and this season being arguably about the budget strikers - Kane, Ings, Berahino, Austin etc. These things can change, sure, so take the fact that you have to be adaptable for granted. Two things i have learned -

    1. Start the season with Ivanovic - hes performed well at the start of every season i can remember
    2. Dont discount players based on past or recent seasons - IE Downing this season.

What have you guys learned? (obviously apart from captaining Lukaku ever)

            Yeah there is that...

I'd say a formula that's worked is pretty basic. Nailed on players with good batches of fixtures. Always wait until players prove themselves on comebacks from injury and get 90 mins - then get them in. These guys together with those bought in the transfer window are generally fresher and keen to impress.

            Oh and be stupid lucky...

Agreed on GW1 Ivanovic. Think he'll be in my team from the start next season, not selling bar injury/long term suspension.

Also - don't captain a player on their first game back from injury. Have suffered blanks from Costa, Aguero and Sanchez when doing that.

This is my first season of playing 'properly ' and I have don't let don't tie too much value up in a premium goalkeeper, don't make transfers early whilst there's still midweek games to play and that full backs but mostly right back are the defenders to get , goalscoring mids are gold dust and plan your transfers in advance look beyond the 3 games that show on FPL page ( these might be obvious to seasoned pro's but if there's any beginners out there reading this that will hit the game hard next year then this may be helpful )

Oh, and sorry to sound like an ass but honestly, my number one rule will be:

Don't listen to 99% of the transfer advice on here. I've lost a lot of points being put off transfers this season by people on here. If I would've gone with my gut I would've had some awesome punty hauls.

Nothing I didn't already know, although I don't do it because i my fave picks.

Downing was so high in the stats it was obvious he going to have a good run, and on kicks...Coutinho the same...The lesson is to learn that the game changes throughout the season and that those that prosper are the ones that take the risk before the pts and not after.

            Not so sure about that.

Apparently players with 1-4 top 10k finishes up to and including the 2013-14 season took 12-13 hits per season on average, but players with 5-7 top 10k finishes averaged 14-16.

Of course, in seasons where you get off to a good start and are lucky with injuries you probably won't require so many hits.

        Learned a lot.

Hence the post might get a bit long, but I think it'll help all the beginners and the pros will probably get a chance to reiterate a few lessons too!

This is my second season overall, however, first season as a serious player. In fact, I didn't even knew that midfielders give 5 points for a goal while forwards earn 4, and a lot of other things that seem pretty obvious now! So, what I learned is,

        1. Defenders and GK's are extremely important for a successful season.

        a. That's because, among the front 8, 5 of them (4 Premium and 1 cheap) are almost present in every active squad (Template). So if they perform in some week, they perform for all, similarly in bad week they perform for none and regardless of what sort of week it is in terms of attack, it is your defense, which will always help you elevate through the ranks. 2 Premium (Ivanovic + Someone else, depending on season) and 3 well-rotating cheaps in defense.

        b. Rotational GK is a fantastic approach, and I have had tremendous success ever since I applied it in my GW22 wildcard, I know it is not that long, only 6 weeks, but my GKs have earned clean sheets in all of them (4 Foster, 2 Krul) which is more than what I've earned in all the previous 21 GWs with premium GK approach.

        2. Best formation 3-4-3, however based on the week and your players, 3-5-2 can be equally good, if not slightly better.

        3. Fixtures are important, and so as form. But giving preference to any of them too much will cause your downfall for sure. However, I personally have a slight bias towards fixtures over form.

        4. Riding the bandwagon before it becomes a bandwagon can prove to be a season changer, but that will happen only 2-3 times each season, which is however enough to propel you to the sky (Kane on GW13, Silva on GW17 and Ozil on GW23 for me this season).

        5. If you want to consolidate your rank, stick with the template (Trust me, template is not bad despite all the criticism, in fact it is good, that's why they are template and the top 1K favours them), however if you have ground to make, take hits (logically sound ones though, helped me cover 220 Points over my college-league topper between December 2nd week to Feb 1st week and I'm 41 Points ahead of him).

And this is where I end.
I know it got a bit long, so apology for that, however could have went a couple of points longer, but don't want it to become a History lecture! 😉 🙂

Will have a Liverpool attack cover and Coutinho seems the best fit, in terms of price and explosiveness.

However, I think you've seen the 'The Week - GW27' article. Liverpool has their name there mate. So not taking just now (Fixture bias as mentioned)! 😉

        All good points from everyone.

Another I would add is avoid bias/prejudice towards teams, just because its Liverpool doesn't mean they are Loserpool and just because your support X team don't have too much faith in them. You have to be cold, hard and calculated.

..... Fergie expressed his wish to end Liverpool's period of domination of English football and to "knock them off their b****y perch", and incredibly he succeeded.

Following United's own period of dominance during Fergie's reign, United and Liverpool are now both contenders for the title of being the most consistently successful club in the history of English football (the rest are still a long way behind) and ought both to show respect for each other's achievements. I have never understood why many supporters seem to think that it is not possible to support their own team without also hating other teams (friendly rivalry yes, but hate no), although in a small number of cases there may be historical reasons for doing so.

To insult their rivals by calling them 'Loserpool' is both infantile and absolutely ridiculous, and I am pleased to see that you do not support that idea yourself.

      Forster, Hamer

      a) Cazorla to Eriksen

      Kane vs Austin quick question

I have two teams (my own, car crash of a squad – rank 86k and my cats, inexplicably out performing team of punts – rank 12k)

Both now have Austin and Kane up front and I want to captain one in each.

SO – the question is do I captain Austin in the 12k ranked one as a differential to get into the top 10k? Or do I play safer with that one and captain Kane and hope my other players can sneak me in there?

      Thanks!
