Liverpool fail to break down a resilient Blackburn backline at Anfield in yesterday’s FA Cup quarter-final, with both clubs now awaiting confirmation of a replay date.

Liverpool Stumble in FA Cup stalemate

Despite enjoying the lion’s share of possession and chances, Liverpool were unable to breach Blackburn Rovers’ defence in their FA Cup quarter-final clash and had to settle for a 0-0 draw. Brendan Rodgers named two changes from the side that triumphed over Burnley in midweek, as Joe Allen and Alberto Moreno dropped out for Glen Johnson and Lazar Markovic. Raheem Sterling lined up in the left-wing back role, while Markovic was deployed on the opposite flank.

Sterling’s employment in the midfield four since last weekend’s clash with Burnley could be a concern for the 20-year-old’s 31% ownership. In the Merseysiders’ last two outings in all competitions, the bulk of their goal attempts fell to either Daniel Sturridge (12 shots) or Philippe Coutinho (eight shots), whereas Sterling only mustered a single shot in both encounters – no doubt due to his increased defensive workload when operating as a wing-back. Couple this with the fact that the 7.9-priced Coutinho has been in fine form of late, bagging two goals in three starts, and the England international has dropped slightly in terms of that internal contest.

Liverpool may have lacked the cutting edge to break the deadlock at Anfield, but their rearguard stood firm once again, recording their fourth clean sheet in six across all competitions. This was despite losing Martin Skrtel in the opening stages to a head injury – the Slovakian centre-back landed awkwardly after contesting an aerial duel with Blackburn striker Rudy Gestede and was attended to on the pitch for over eight minutes. Rodgers was quick to reassure reporters after the match that Skrtel sustained no serious damage.

“He is fine but he will go to the local hospital to make sure. If he had his choice, he wouldn’t but we have to follow procedure. He was fine, up walking and talking after the game but as a precaution we need to make sure he is okay.”

Elsewhere on the injury front, Allen picked up a knock in training so is a doubt for Liverpool’s away tie with Swansea next Gameweek. Meanwhile, Rodgers declared Steven Gerrard fit for the Swans clash after the 34-year-old was given the all clear to return to training.

“Steven has been working well with the rehab team. He will be back training this week and will be available for the Swansea game.”

Reds Made to Wait for Replay

In an unusual turn of events, Liverpool look set to wait nearly a month to determine their FA Cup fate. League matches taking precedence over cup ties, means a rescheduling of the Reds’ televised match against Swansea next Monday is out of the question, while UEFA regulations stipulate that domestic matches shouldn’t run concurrently with Champions League or Europa League fixtures.

With European football scheduled for the next fortnight and an international break following straight after, the earliest available date for their replays is poised to be April 7 or 8, which would fall in between a visit to Arsenal and a home clash against Newcastle in Gameweeks 31 and 32.

Should Liverpool prevail over Blackburn in the replay, Uefa’s rules will also have a knock-on effect in the Fantasy Premier League stakes. With the FA Cup semi-finals scheduled during Gameweek 33, Liverpool’s trip to Hull City would likely get moved to Gameweek 34 due to the midweek European football and hand Fantasy managers more teams to consider for the double. At present, only Chelsea and Leicester have definite double Gameweek 34s, though Villa’s Gameweek 33 clash with QPR needs rescheduled after their weekend cup victory over West Brom saw them progress to the last four of the cup.

Hi guys, want some advice on my team please if you have a second.

    Panti-Heaton
    Terry-Lescott-Cresswell-Clyne-Hutton
    Sanchez-Eriksen-Silva-Hazard-Boyd
    Aguero-Kane-Austin

    1FT, nowt in the bank.

Would like to get rid of Boyd, Heaton and Hutton if I could but don't really want to waste a FT on them as they are benchies anyway. Also, I'm thinking of playing Cresswell (ars) over Clyne (che) cos i think neither will keep a CS but I fancy Cresswell more for attacking points.

    What do you reckon?

I would save FT. You have strong top8 and you don't wanna get rid of Cresswell or Clyne considering their strong upcoming fixtures, and you cannot afford to replace Hutton with anyone with a good fixture this week since you have nothing in the bank.

      1. And we all have legs

Yeah gotta hold for now I think. Could get Zouma for Terry at some stage but not really sure what I would do with the money. Austin and Giroud is much of a muchness for me. Do feel team is a little template but what can you do.

  3. JariL
    • 11 Years
    10 years, 10 months ago

Hey guys, I'd appreciate some opinions. I'm happy with my top8 so I'm looking to improve my backline.

1FT 1.1ITB (WC left, will use for GW34)

    Foster
    Koscielny Wollscheid PVA
    Hazard Silva Özil Eriksen
    Kun Giroud Kane

    Moses Rose Fonte

I feel like I need a Chelsea defender, especially since Wolly (injury) and PVA (gametime) are both doubts. Do you think Fonte --> Terry is my best bet, or maybe PVA --> Zouma? "Zouma not safe for Chelsea DGW" is not a factor for me since I will WC before that anyway.

What would you do? I guess save FT is a possibility too.

Saints still have decent fixtures after Chelsea.

About about Fonte to Terry, and then next week PVA to Toby?

      1. JariL
        • 11 Years
        10 years, 10 months ago

If I do Fonte --> Terry I have 0.1 left ITB and cannot afford PVA -> Toby and also annoyingly 0.1 short of Wolly --> Toby.

        It's a tough one.

Zouma just isn't safe in general but if you can afford him to be benched every now and then he's an option.

      1. JariL
        • 11 Years
        10 years, 10 months ago

Yeah I fully expect him to be benched in some games, but if I did PVA --> Zouma I would have strong defense and good cover for Zouma in the coming weeks.

One thing to consider though is that Zouma played pretty well as DM so if he starts on the bench I can see Mourinho sometimes subbing him in to protect the lead. That way you can end up with 1 point cameo even though Chelsea keep a CS...

Yeah. I might just end up saving a FT and hoping that Saints score this week. With 2FTs it's much easier to rebuild the defense.

Is anyone else having problems logging into the Fantasy Premier League site? When I enter my username and password the page just refreshes and won't take me to my team as it should do. It tells me I am logged in at the top right corner but I'm unable to access anything, even through the 'My Account' tab. I've even tried manually typing in the URL to take me to my team, but no, nothing is working. Now I'm fast approaching the point where I will start losing my temper...

    Can anyone help? 🙁

If United wins tonight their game in week 33 needs to be rescheduled. Since Chelsea already has a double in gameweek 34 I guess that rules out that the game can be postponed to gw34? What is the most likely scenario if that happens?

In that case the game will be held later in the season. So basically between GW34-38, Chelsea would have seven games in five GWs.

Aguero captainers during the double have one consolation - at least they don't have to move the armband for Gameweek 29.

Aguero points in his last six away starts - 56 (Just over 9ppg average)
Aguero points in his last six home starts* - 27

*I haven't included the gwk 15 home game where he played just six mins.

They are at home though. Only two other teams have conceded more shots in the box than Burnley at home.

Burnley don't make a lot of defensive slips at home though, so penalties may be unlikely. Aguero, Silva et al will have lots of chances to shoot at goal from close range through.

As far as I can see West Ham would have to guarantee they would play blindfold for me to captain an Arsenal player over Aguero, with his away form and with essentially a Championship side as opposition.

Why do people consistently make the mistake of splitting form for individual players into home and away. It's a brilliant way of taking a really small sample size to conclude something that isn't really true, that is certain players are good at home, and certain players are good away.

You may as well make stupid comments like Eriksen captain in weeks 34 & 36 (sou & stk), because he has 8.33ppg average against teams that begin with the letter S.

Completely factually true, but also irrelevant manipulation of stats. Hardly any premium attacking players differ in their home or away ability to score points, any more than is normal, so stop spitting records to arrive at false conclusions that happen by chance. You are just overfitting here Jonty!

The same kind of logic earlier in the season had someone on another site say, Southampton are a good defence, and also Hazard has done very little away from home, therefor bench Hazard Southampton away! Hazard scored.

Sorry if that comes across as too much of a rant. 😆

Teams are set up differently when playing home and away which is often advantageous to certain players. Aguero may had better service away from home as a lone striker

        Sorry, I disagree with this.

By your logic it shouldn't matter whether teams play away or at home, they will have the same chance of winning - as player performance translate into team performance.

Home and away matters. I do not think Bradford could have done what they've done in the FA Cup if all their ties had been away.

No you've missed the point, it's not that home and away doesn't matter.

It's that between individual players the difference is not particularly different, so using a small sample size to suggest some players are homers, and some are awayers, is a false conclusion.

Teams have now each played about 14 home games and about 14 away games.

Those are far bigger sample sizes than just looking at the last 4 game-weeks, which IS too small a sample.

Very good point. What's your t-statistic on that test, Jonty?!

The analogy with teams starting with the letter S is a little harsh, though, as teams sometimes set up differently home and away.

aguero averages 5.2 ppg at home, 6.9 ppg away. however, there is no statistical difference between his home and away scores as determined by one-way anova (F(2, 20) = 0.834, p = 0.449). all matches included.

Finally someone with a proper working knowledge of statistics!

it is highly unlikely that agueros home and away form is identical...however even then, with sample sizes often barely reaching double digits we must really be cautious and only the largest of disparities could be taken seriously.

Great suff Caine & Co., backing up my original point that we shouldn't jump to these conclusions about home and away form.

It's an even stronger point than this, as even if their was a statistical difference, correlation would not imply causation. For example a statistical test my find that Eriksen does score better against teams beginning with the letter S, though we wouldn't be convinced this was a causal relationship.

The funny thing is there's one more point, that for an individual player, his points scoring form going into a game week isn't correlated to his score in that game week anyway.

Cheers, yeah the 'form' thing is funny indeed. if you flip a coin 100 times, you'll get streaks of 4 or 5 or some patterns indicating you are on form to flip tails for example. fantasy football form is one of the stupidest things discussed here. its mainly random, the only real form is when a player is fit and playing well. thats when you maybe get him.

My hypothesis would be that form does exist and there would be some autocorrelation in player points over time. I'm thinking of Pelle as an example.

However, we too often fall into the trap of overfitting or being swayed by a couple of extreme cases, so I'd love to see some analysis.

When you say "playing well" what do you mean? Can you be playing well and not picking up fantasy points over a period of half a dozen GWs (defensive mids aside!)?

yeah i think its possible. sometimes you are doing everything right but dont score or assists for a while. this is randomness, not a lack of form imo. early season sanchez/di maria could be an example. sanchez was awesome but not picking huge scores like di maria (who got flukey goals&assists). di maria price rised, sanchez dropped and sanchez goes scoring 6 goals in 4 games. basically im saying you should back a player when you see he is good, and not wait for some big scores and 'form'. also, dont be fooled by fpl points if the player is crap

I have actually done this myself about a month ago, I took popular players, used a weighted rolling average from the 5 previous games, and checked to see if for if there was a correlation between form and points scored in a game week.

I checked 11 popular attacking picks, and the only one that showed a positive correlation was Pellè, mainly due to the amount of 2's in a row he had got. Everyone else actually showed a negative correlation, though most of them were statistically insignificant for the sample size.

Over all of the data however which looked at over 150 matches, the evidence was pretty strong, that points based form scores have very little or no correlation with points scored that week. If anything the data suggested a negative correlation, perhaps down to managers focusing on cancelling out a players threat, or complacency.

I didn't share my findings as when I shared them, those that use form, didn't take the evidence very well, and I felt like this myth is too ingrained and it actually concerns me very little if other people want to just be wrong.

Well thanks for sharing it now. I think it's an interesting result. I wonder whether weighted rolling averages of stats like shots on target and chances created might be better predictors than FPL points.

I 'm sure there is a correlation. It may not be a strong one, and it won't be as strong as the correlation with his score over a greater number of forthcoming game-weeks, but it will exist.

What is even more interesting, that even when he had red arrows, it caused him very slight dip in rank in each of the 7 occasions! Nice..

      For Simon March -

What are your thoughts on Ryan Mason and Sadio Mane?

Which one of these players would you get rid of for Ivanovic; Bertrand or Clyne?

Given how the fixtures are likely to fall, which week is going to be more important?
      GW 33 or GW 34?
      Incomplete team or DGW heaven?

      Would like to know
Considering there is only 4/5 FT before reduced wk33 and DGW 34 is it worth making all transfers from now on based on the teams involved or should we still bring in someone like coutinho, who may have a blank and not have DGW till wk37

Zouma has filled in for Matic as CDM in the last two games. Terry and Cahill has kept clean sheets in both of those games, so how will his game time be affected when MAtic returns?

      General question:

What are your thoughts on the post DGW outlook for Mr Eriksen. Around 80% of top 1000 have him. Is he worth keeping alongside Kane?

Why do the Scouts continually base their Scout Picks on fixtures? Please explain why you chose to largely ignore form e.g. WBA defenders.

I for one never even bother to read the SPs any more. Almost as bad as anything that Garth Crooks puts to pen.

We look at form and fixtures. Also this has been our most successful season for ages regarding the picks, largely down to the community's involvement and opening up the process more to readers. Fixtures are important, but so too is form... Personally I weight them equally. The community are different each week to in the weighting they give them. Sorry you don't read them, but you are missing out on some good statistics, community links. I also try and include Members tables where I can as well, not every week but where applicable.

      Question for Simon

What tactics would give someone around 73 points behind Simon the best chance to overtake him (with no wildcard for example)?

Hypothetical question from a friend of mine.

Do you just happen to be exactly 73 points behind Simon? Do you seriously expect him to tell you how to beat him?

      Question for Simon:

everyone seems stuck with Silva, Hazard, Sanchez ... being the one leading the pack, which 4th mid would you recommend for the remaining matches to complete that midfield template ? and do you think the fact you still have your wildcard will kill your opponents in the next ddgw ?

      3 quick questions for Simon:

How much of your time does FPL consume?
Are you a stats man or a gut feeling kind of guy?
Are you a form follower or fixtures fan?

      Questions for Simon:

      1. You have scored 550 points in the past 8 game-weeks (which is better than any of the 138 players in my FFS January Wildcard League), and this has taken you from 7th place in the world to 1st place with a lead of 40 points. What is the secret of a successful Wildcard?

      2. Were you tempted to play an early Main Wildcard?

      3. Is having a high TV overrated?

Hi lads, could I ask some opinions whilst it is quiet?

    Panti
    PVA - Bellerin - Jones
    Hazard - Sanchez - Silva - Eriksen
    Aguero - Kane - Austin

    Krul - Boyd - Bertrand - Rose

    1FT, 0.6m.

    I'm thinking either:

    A) Jones ---> WBA defender, or;
    B) Save and get Alderweireld next week.

    Thanks.

I think in that situation there wasn't enough evidence to say he was out. It should favour the batsmen
