The Watchlist Updated – Gameweek 36 – The Defence

As the end of the season draws ever nearer, we’re rolling out the first of our Watchlist articles tonight, which offer player recommendations for the final three Gameweeks. There is little change at the top, with Arsenal and Leicester assets continuing to dominate, while Aleksandar Kolarov is back in our thoughts having returned to form in the last few weeks.

GOALKEEPERS

Although David Ospina failed to keep a clean sheet in Arsenal’s 3-1 win at Hull last night, the Gunners keeper stays top of our rankings with three home matches (SWA, SUN, WBA) and a double Gameweek 37 trip to United left over the final few weeks. Arsene Wenger’s side have kept five shut-outs in their last seven league encounters at the Emirates, so the 4.9-priced Colombian international should continue to provide terrific value.

Leicester’s Kasper Schmeichel maintained his impressive form with a third shut-out in four in the Foxes 3-0 triumph against Newcastle. The 4.4-valued keeper has also picked up seven extra points over that period through bonus and save points, so with the fixtures (SOT, sun, QPR) still in his favour, the Danish international still looks a very strong option between the sticks.

By virtue of Sunderland’s double (LEI, ars) in Gameweek 37, Costel Pantilimon sees his stock rise this time around. The 4.5-rated keeper has only kept one clean sheet in his last eight outings, and faces difficult fixtures at Everton and Chelsea either side of the double. The Romanian international has chalked up 99 saves, though, despite not figuring for the first nine Gameweeks of the season, and could gain some valuable extra save points.

Confidence in Everton’s Tim Howard has been dented somewhat after conceding three against Aston Villa on Saturday. The Toffees face a decent run-in (SUN, whm, TOT), though, and, having kept clean sheets in their last four at Goodison Park, could continue to prosper in front of their own fans.

With West Ham’s rearguard delivering consecutive shut-outs, Adrian moves up a couple of spots in our latest update. The Hammers face a reasonable schedule (avl, EVE, new) as the season draws to a close, so the 5.2-priced Spaniard looks a decent pick, particularly if he can keep up his tremendous record of saving penalties, having stopped three already this term.

Having surprised many by collecting 19 points over Hull’s double in Gameweek 34, Steve Harper sneaks onto our ladder. The home fixture against Burnley this Saturday is firmly in our thoughts, given the Clarets have failed to score in their last six encounters, while a trip to White Hart Lane may not be as unfavourable as you’d think, with Spurs failing to score in their last two at home.

The “Tony Pulis effect” is back in full swing after three consecutive clean sheets for West Brom, so Boaz Myhill returns to the Watchlist this week. The fixtures (new, CHE, ars) still aren’t really in the 4.1-valued keeper’s favour, but having kept Liverpool and Man United scoreless in recent matches, Myhill could continue to surprise and provide valuable points for his 13.4% ownership.

Tim Krul completes our goalkeeper ladder thanks to what look to be favourable fixtures (WBA, qpr, WHM) for Newcastle over the final three Gameweeks. Having conceded three goals in each of their last three matches, confidence in the Magpies rearguard is pretty low, so it’s difficult to back the Dutch international with much confidence right now.

DEFENDERS

Arsenal’s Laurent Koscielny keeps his spot at the summit, with the Gunners remaining schedule (SWA, mun/SUN, WBA) ranked first according to our Season Ticker. The 6.0-valued defender has failed to register a goal attempt in his last four appearances, which is a concern considering the outlay, but with the French international looking less susceptible to rotation than the cheaper options such as Nacho Monreal and Hector Bellerin, we’re sticking with Koscielny as our favoured Arsenal backline option.

With a goal and assist in his last four appearances, along with three shut-outs, Leicester’s Wes Morgan is undoubtedly one of the form players in Fantasy Premier League (FPL). Offering outstanding value at just 4.5, the defender remains a great option for the run-in, with the Foxes fixtures (SOT, sun, QPR) very favourable as they look to secure their Premier League status.

Branislav Ivanovic drops a place in our latest refresh, with uncertainty over how the newly crowned champions will approach their final three matches (LIV, wba, SUN) . The 7.7-priced defender, along with John Terry, has played every minute of Chelsea’s league campaign, which should avert the risk of any rotation. In terms of attacking returns, Ivanovic has mustered just one assist in his last nine and could be something of an expensive luxury should Jose Mourinho’s side go through the motions from this point onwards.

Back-to-back clean sheets mean West Ham’s Aaron Cresswell keeps his place towards the top of our rankings. The former Ipswich man also grabbed two bonus points in the 1-0 win against Burnley, and with the Hammers facing a decent run-in (avl, EVE, new), the 5.6-rated defender remains a strong option for the rest of the campaign.

Leighton Baines is a non-mover this week, with Everton facing two of their final three matches (SUN, whm, TOT) in front of their own fans. The England international, who will set you back 7.1 in FPL, is unlikely to see any further investment given he’s lost penalty duties to Romelu Lukaku, but with seven chances created in his last four outings, he remains one of the most attack-minded defenders, having provided nine assists so far this season.

Southampton’s Toby Alderweireld remains in our thoughts, given he could continue to play in centre midfield following Morgan Schneiderlin’s season-ending injury. Valued at just 4.8 in FPL, the Belgian international, with an ownership of just 2.6%, could be a handy differential with upside for Saints’ final three matches (lei, AVL, mci).

Patrick van Aanholt continues to move up our ladder with Sunderland’s double Gameweek 37 (LEI/ars) on the horizon. The 4.1-priced left-back looks a shrewd pick for the rest of the season, given he is joint third among defenders over the last four matches with seven chances created, while also managing six goal attempts over the same period, with three from inside the box.

Aston Villa’s Ron Vlaar is back on our radar thanks to some impressive underlying stats over the last four Gameweeks. The Dutch international, who is priced at just 4.3 in FPL, has produced five attempts inside the box over that period, joint first among all defenders. While Tim Sherwood’s men have only kept one clean sheet in their last seven, Vlaar is clearly a threat from set pieces, having also registered an assist in the 3-2 victory against Everton, and with some kind fixtures (WHM, sot, BUR), is worth some consideration.

After failing to register clean sheets against lowly Hull and QPR in Liverpool’s last two matches, Martin Skrtel suffers a drop in our latest update. The Reds remaining fixtures (che, CPL, sto) also hurt his prospects, and having only managed two shots from inside the box in his last six appearances, the Slovakia international could struggle to justify his 6.0 price tag.

Having averaged 8.3 points per appearance since returning to the Manchester City starting XI in Gameweek 33, Aleksandar Kolarov finds himself back on the Watchlist. The 5.7-priced defender has created five chances in his last three appearances, and has also fired in six goal attempts. The Serbia international could find himself at risk of rotation, with Gael Clichy returning to the bench against Tottenham after recovering from a groin injury, but with the ability to deliver points at either end, Kolarov could attract some suitors for those looking to make up lost ground given City’s favourable run-in (QPR, swa, SOT).

Re-post from earlier. Here's my master plan!

This week I'm thinking about doing Sterling + Cambiasso >> Ramsey + Grealish for free - which leaves 0.5 in the bank and gives me this team:

    Schmeichel
    Terry, McShane, Morgan
    Mata, Hazard, Grealish, Ramsey
    Giroud, Aguero, Benteke

    Pantilimon - Henderson, Skrtel, Baird

Then, for the week after I'm thinking about doing Hazard >> Sanchez. It means I get to keep Hazard for the Liverpool match and it gives me another week to assess the Arsenal mids and maybe even do Mata >> Ozil/Cazorla.

The question is though, when do I do my Ramsey + Grealish in transfers? Pull the plus now incase they rise or my players fall?

If you could create a new FPL rule, what would you do?

    (doesn't have to be realistic!)

Mine, with Arsenal in mind: You can nominate a team at the start of the season, and you are then given an extra possible slot for that team - i.e. you can have a max. of FOUR from that team! 😀

Mine would be something to do with managers. Like you select managers from the premier league and they give you extra points for certain things for something. No use how it'd work though. Something a bit like FIFA Ultimate Team.

That you have a joker to play so one week you get double points for your whole team. The only proviso being you can't do it when any team has a dgw.

Jan Wildcard to be just one extra free transfer on top of what you have when activated, so 2 if you only had 1 ft and 3 if you had 2 transfers

Yeah, people love change, but I do think 2 wildcards a season (one first half, one second half) would be better. The January template makes it boring for weeks.

I've been suggesting this for ages, and it now seems to have quite a lot of support.

The one disadvantage though is that everyone will play one wildcard early and save the other for a late DGW, whereas the current system forces us to make a choice between these two strategies.

Can only transfer in a player X amount of times.

Eg. The limit would be three. So if you already transferred Sanchez in three time and didn't have him now you couldn't get him in for the double.

      Ginkapo's idea

You get 3 players to assign multiplier levels to rather than having a single captain.

The increments are a detail, but for purpose of illustration you can give one player 100% score (x2) and 0% to the others or 60 30 10, etc.

allows the casuals to still 'captain' players and the more hardcore players freedom of hedging bets

I mean players get bonus for reaching certain bps thresholds. Get over 40bps, you get three bonus.. if no one gets 40bps, no one gets max bonus. It'd reward truly worthwhile performances and solve many bug bears we currently have.

An idea I cant take credit for, but I like.

Bit late to the party on this one, but surely this would be really painful - you run the risk of your defender getting booked, conceding a goal AND getting punished for conceding the pen. Or a red card and a punishment. Or even just a punishment for an unlucky trip or handball...

FPL is one big lottery! You can never ben assured of anything, just make a good pick based on odds and gut feeling. Captaincy just exaggerates it. Consistently logical decisions should even out well over 38 games, but you can't expect it to work out every time

My vice captain picks have scored more than 70 points more than my captian picks this season despite selecting the sensible/obvious/popular choices for both positions - luck plays a part in FPL due to injuries/rotation/near misses etc but a double point captain is far too 'luck' based.

Agree although I wouldn't mind 2 WCs to use anytime or, as a compromise, a second WC to be used anytime after New Year

2 WCs just means teams being the same for longer in the season.

Or keep the January wildcard but scrap the other one.

The January wildcard is supposed to encourage the casuals, and they probably don't use the other one anyway.

Forcing people to take hits after GW1 if a bad start seems silly.
Plenty like using their WC early just for team value.

Deciding how many hits to take in those circumstances might be an interesting challenge.

It would also be a further incentive to get your initial squad right.

I would imagine that most reasonably sensible initial squads could be made to look fairly respectable with the help of only a small number of hits.

Reasonable & super take a fair few hits.
The Jan WC only just means casuals are further behind as they couldn't have WC'ed in GW2 and pretty much just give up.

FPL Towers care. That's why they introduced the January Wildcard in the first place.

If it fails to encourage the casuals, then perhaps they ought to scrap it after all (and just keep the other one).

... For me, the main advantage of playing an early wildcard would be to improve my squad.
Increasing my team value would just be a welcome by-product or side-issue.

This is a whole other discussion, which has been had sooo many times on here. It's a real pet peeve of mine when people say that the current system "punishes" people who buy early, because it's just mathematically wrong. Here's why...

Say your player is now worth 12. You bought him at 10, your opponent bought him at 11.

The rest of your team is worth (X - 10)
The rest of their team is worth (X - 11)

Now you both sell him, you get 11 for him, your opponent gets 11.5.

Your team is now worth (X + 1)
Their team is now worth (X + 0.5)

You’re not being punished, your profit is just being limited so that the difference in value doesn’t get out of hand. Don’t forget you already earned all the points that presumably made said player rise by 1 before your opponent got round to buying him. Don’t be greedy 😉

This is without even taking into account what you've done with the extra 1m you saved by buying early... I think the current system is vital to stop team values getting ridiculous.

Without it, by Christmas you'd be able to assemble virtually any team you wanted which - although it might sound great - would actually take all the fun out of the game. Us "pros" would completely tan all our rivals and they'd stop inviting us to their cash leagues 😉

I don't care for the sell-on fee. Simple as that. In your words, "You’re not being punished, your profit is just being limited so that the difference in value doesn’t get out of hand." That sounds exactly like a form of punishment. I simply prefer to get the full value out of a player when I decide myself that it's time to sell them? Your argument leans more towards socialism. I prefer the capitalist approach.

The option to classify a midfielder as a "defensive" mid. Maybe 2 points for a goal, 1 point for an assist, but 4 points for a clean sheet.

Noone seems to be a fan of the January wildcard, why not have something like a 'half wildcard' with say 5 transfers that could be used across January? Happy middle ground.

This season was unusual as there were no fixtures cancelled because of the weather and little action in the January window, but being able to make a few transfers to freshen the teams up would be useful in most seasons. The current Jan wildcard that gives you the ability to make wholesale changes does just create template teams such as the Haz, Sanchez, Silva, Eriksen, Aguero, Kane, Austin front 7 most had in January.

I like the idea of rolling more than one transfer as well. If the idea for the Jan wildcard was to keep people interested then any inactive teams that come back with 6-7 transfers banked could be an alternative for that as well. It would also be a bit of compensation for anyone who misses the deadline!

If a player is sent off then the red card is recinded by the FA, you get the points they gained before the sending off ie don't loose points for the sending off.

Being able to promote a player from the bench (i.e. swap for someone in your starting 11) once a season. Would be a bit of a twist or stick. If you had someone on the bench who scored 12 points in GW3 would you promote those 12 points or hold out in case you have an even bigger haul later in the season. Would be a good way of rewarding strong squads.

I would like a "hockey assist" (Pass to the assister) to be worth a point. I guess it would probably lead to a lot of dumb arguments and 'cheap' points, but it'd only be a point and it annoys me when a tasty through ball isn't rewarded when the recipient plays a simple square ball for a tap in.

I'd also scrap the assist for drawing a converted free kick/penalty and just make it 2 points for drawing a penalty, like the Champion's League game.

This and the removal of jan WC are the 2 changes I would like.

Generally it's a well balanced game. The transfers and the prices are what stands it apart from other formats. Prices create a great dynamic between early and late moves as well as decisions whether to sell a player at the risk of not affording them back. The 1ft + 4 pts is perfectly balanced as well meaning in the last 2 years the winner has taken lots of hits last year and then no hits this year. I'd hate to see either of these changed.

      1 'manual' sub per season.

For just one gameweek you get to sub in any player from your bench for any in your first 11, even those who have played. Must be used in the short window between all games finishing and the Fantasy tables updating.

*I don't actually think this is a great idea, I'm just sore about leaving Myhill on the bench last week 🙁

The usual problem with this type of question is the answers usually cover 2 points.
      1) the peev - poster has lost a H2H because of autosub or VC rule and wants that rule changed so that it doesn't happen to them again.
      2) I want to play a different game - the poster is new or newish to FPL and prefers the rules of another game, one that lets them bandwagon at a whim or god forbid have a 100 team entries.

There are a couple of smart suggestions but this game does not need a radical rule change.

This game is not perfect but neither is football. As a fan, how many times have you come away from a game with a complete sense of injustice or foul play by higher beings?
The FPL game has more or less stuck to the format that has made it the popular monster that it is, not perfect but close.
If you want to try it with some rule changes can I suggest forking out a little dosh and playing UFPL next season - the tweeks in the rules & the squad format make it an captivating addition to FPL.
These are the only 2 FF games I play now, (since UCL can't wipe it own erse never mind run a game) and I reckon they compliment each other well.

Wow Pogba is overrated . I mean getting injured before the Champions League Semi Final 🙄 . Players who are worth £60 million pounds do not get injured let alone before big games . He is clearly not going to United or Chelsea he will have to settle for a move to Real

    Any advice appreciated:

Ahead of ML rival by 16 points (Thank you Myhill).

    My team:
Myhill, Rose, Ivan, Terry, Kos, Alder, Skrtel, Sanch, Haz, Hendo, Sterling, Boyd, Kun, Kane, Austin (0.3 ITB, 2FTs)

    Differentials:
Ospina, Schmeichel, Schlupp, Duff, Fabregas, Silva, Ramsey, Vardy, NDoye.

Looking to close him off with:
Ivan, Hendo, Sterling, Boyd, Austin OUT
Wasilewski, Silva, Ramsey, Benteke, Albrighton IN (Exact funds).

    -12. Worth it?

I just think Silva and Ramsey could hurt me. 🙁

I think I'll have to pick between the two of them.

What about Hendo, Austin and Sterling to Silva/Ramsey, Albrighton and Benteke for a -4? (or just the latter two for free)

Exactly. This is the sort of cunning plan Baldrick would come up with if he played FPL. Expect he probably wouldn't have been able to build up the lead in the first place

I'd want to keep Terry.. I'd have to go B. Ramsey is on fire anyhow.

Hazard to Sanchez is an interesting prospect though!

Seriously, though. If it was anything to worry about, he wouldn't have been rolled back out on the field the second half. Not to mention that he looked fantastic after he ran off the "injury". He has a full week to get over what was basically a kick to the shin.

    Henderson - Sanchez - Hazard - Sterling
    Aguero - Giroud - Kane

Larsson is ahead of him on corners, but Gomez is on pens..Gomez has created an ok number of chances (1-2 per game) in the last 5 but I'm not sure how that would change with Larsson in..

Anyone in the know with price changers know if Sterling will survive until Thursday without dropping? Have the exact cash for Sterling > Ozil but with the Ramsey knock I think it may be best to hold off as long as possible.

    Myhill (Rose)
    Ivan, Fonte, Morgan (PVA, Moreno)
    Hazard, Sanchez, Ramsey, Sterling (Mahrez)
    Aguero, Benteke, Kane
