The Digest – Gameweek 36

Our last look back at Gameweek 36 brings City’s red-hot frontman, Sunderland’s improving form and Eden Hazard’s possible pitch time for the final two fixtures under analysis.

The Player

QPR rolled up to the Etihad looking to upset the odds and stall their drop into the Championship last Sunday. By the time the final whistle went, Chris Ramsey’s side had been condemned to relegation by the ruthless brilliance of Sergio Aguero, as the little Argentine served up three goals and a pair of assists in an emphatic 6-0 win.

Manuel Pellegrini’s men have now racked up 14 goals in the last five matches since returning to a lone forward system, compared to just seven strikes in the previous five when utilising a two-man frontline. Without a partner beside him, Aguero has flourished as the focal point of City’s attack and played a part in ten of those 14 strikes, courtesy of eight goals and a couple of assists.

Prior to this switch, the Argentine had only netted in more than two successive league outings on one occasion this season – a three-match scoring run over Gameweeks 6-8. Pellegrini’s change of tactics has seen Aguero score in each of the last five now, with his tally now standing at 25 goals for the season, his highest haul since arriving on these shores from Atletico Madrid.

There’s no doubt that Aguero, on his day, is head and shoulders about any other forward as a Fantasy prospect, in terms of both consistency and explosive potential. Although Pellegrini’s penchant for a 4-2-2-2 remains an issue, the last few fixtures may have gone some way to persuading the City manager that his side, and star player, are far more devastating when Aguero is allowed to maraud up front on his own.

The Team

A weekend trip to Everton looked far from straightforward, given that the Toffees had racked up four straight wins at Goodison without conceding a single goal. Sunderland emerged from Merseyside with three points in the bag and turned in a display that strengthens our faith in their assets ahead of double Gameweek 37.

The 2-0 triumph brings the Black Cats into focus at both ends of the pitch. A second clean sheet in five has ensured Costel Pantilimon and Patrick van Aanholt lead the way for transfers in amongst keepers and defenders respectively as our backlines are restructured ahead of clashes against Leicester and Arsenal.

Further up the field, the battle to beat the drop has presented us with a handful of differentials. Jordi Gomez’ assist at Goodison highlights the Spaniard’s growing confidence in the centre of the park – the Spaniard has now racked up 20 points in the last couple of outings and his spot-kick duties bring him firmly onto our radars. The third most transferred in midfielder this week, he remains in under 1% of FPL sides.

Up front, whilst Connor Wickham has drawn blanks in the last two, Jermain Defoe and forgotten man Danny Graham have both chipped in with a goal and assist. Graham has only started those last couple of matches under Advocaat but as the central figure in the front three, he’s staking a late claim for inclusion at a price of just 4.7.

Certainly, a home clash with in-form Leicester and trip to the Emirates are no easy tasks but Advocaat’s side will approach the double with confidence on the back of two straight wins. Given it’s the first time this season they’ve managed such a feat, their form bodes well as the Wearsiders attempt to pull off another great escape.

The Talking Point

After grinding out a 1-1 draw with Liverpool, Jose Mourinho’s post-match comments have sent waves through the Fantasy community.

Having admitted that the likes of Eden Hazard and Cesc Fabregas are “playing too much”, the Blues boss is looking to hand a number of youngsters a rare opportunity at West Brom next weekend.

Bearing in mind that Arsenal are now braced for a double, Hazard owners have a dilemma as they look to take advantage of the Gunners’ pair of fixtures.

Certainly, last night’s shock home loss to Swansea lessens the prospect of Arsene Wenger rotating next week. A draw against United and home win over Sunderland would clinch a top three spot, thus avoiding the hassle of a Champions League play-off in early August, and therefore allowing Arsenal to rotate at home to West Brom in Gameweek 38 ahead of their FA Cup Final against Villa.

Moving on Hazard for an Arsenal midfielder and then bringing back the Belgian is a viable option, then, and is strengthened by that fact that Mourinho has confirmed he’ll roll out the big guns for the season finale at home to Sunderland. Chelsea are the only side left unbeaten at home in England’s four divisions and bearing in mind that the Black Cats emerged from the Bridge victorious last term, the Blues boss will be determined to seek revenge.

Hazard’s slip in form is a concern, though, and backs up his manager’s suggestion that he’s a little fatigued. The Belgian failed to fire a single attempt against Liverpool on Sunday and has produced just four shots in as many matches as the champions ease up for the summer.

Second-guessing the intentions of top-flight managers is never easy at the best of times but at this point of the season, it’s nigh on impossible. Jose’s mind games do seem to be over for the time being at least, though, and Sunday’s post-match heads-up could ultimately prove beneficial as we prepare to gamble on the final double Gameweek of the campaign.

Let's play the "How many points will I score" game!

Thinking this might be the week to hold off on a transfer and save one for a punt or two in GW38. Aguero got me a pretty healthy lead over my chaser in the league (73-35 score was a pretty cruel blow to my mate), so I am fairly safe from the league standpoint. Unless someone tells me different 😉

    Adrian
    Kosc-Ivan-Bertie
    Caz-Hendo-Sig-Sanchez(c)
    Wickham-Kun-Kane

    Krul-Cambiasso-Schlupp-Wolly

    Thinking points:
    Adrian: 3
    Kosc: 2+7
    Ivan: 5
    Bertie: 4
    Caz: 7+5
    Hendo: 5
    Sig: 2
    Sanchez: 7+7 (x2)
    Wickham: 5+1
    Kun: 5
    Kane: 7

    86...yeah, eternal optimist, I am 😀

What's the current concensus on Kosc vs. Bellerin?
Bellerin hasn't been returning the assists and BPs we probably expected when he burst into the first team.
Koscielny seems to be a BP favourite.

I think if you knew Bellers was going to play both games, he's slightly ahead especially given his price, should you need it. Could have easily had 2 assists last night, and that was against a packed defence.

He'd be "pretty good" in an a average team.

Just like he was at Villa. You wouldn't drop any Liverpool midfielders for him, let alone in any teams better than Liverpool.

Hes done well for city almost every time hes started

Certainly better than nasri navas lallana markovic and probably sterling too, although he will overtake him

Not sure what you mean by your first point. Its not like he'd play championship teams in an average side. He played the premier league sides at villa and performed

He's done well, but because that is all he can do he doesn't get many chances.

He gets found in big games.

Average teams in the Premier League obviously.

I disagree, I actually think he's very underated and a lot of what he does goes un-noticed.

To be fair, average is generous to Everton this season, we've been dire. Got good individual players, everyone's just been so under par (and Martinez has frequently cocked up).

I personally really like Everton and think they have some good players. Love Martinez too, but it has been a very disappointing season.

I think Lukaku and Baines underperforming, as well as the issues with Mirallas have been the main reason

He's a good player, but he wouldn't improve Arsenal's first XI. He would improve Liverpool's squad certainly, don't know where he'd fit into the first team though.

He's one of those players that always seem to make City look much stronger when he plays. Just his work rate and positioning. Nothing fancy, but he provides backbone to the City midfield, very underrated imo. I'd gladly see him in a LFC shirt next year!

At the start of the seqson If you'd picked the current top 3 defenders, 4 midfielders (well Hendo instead of Fab, but near as damn it) and 3 strikers plus Adrian and filled with the cheapest rotations in other spots, and kept your captain on Kun, you'd be on circa 2200 points plus.

    And it was affordable.

Without making a transfer. Without considering the odd draft for an injury.

Better than you're doing ? Its better than me!

A dead team couldn't rotate but could auto-sub.

        Fabianski(5.0) 145/35 (Heaton(4.5) 15/1 in GW16)
        Ivanovic(7.0) 176/36, Terry(6.5) 174/36, Baines(7.0) 139/31
        Hazard(10.0)(V) 224+44/36, Sanchez(10.5) 200/32, Silva(9.0) 179/30, Henderson(6.0) 158/35
        Aguero(12.0)(C) 205*2/31, Kane(5.0) 182/32, Austin(6.0) 165/33
(1 midfielder & 2 defenders, always in the same order)

        Total: 2146 + outfield auto-subs 28 times
        Simon March: 2357/36
So the outfield auto-subs need 211 points at 7.5ppg to catch Simon.
Cost of this team in GW1: 87.5 plus at least 12.5 for the outfield subs

Far from winning FPL, the optimum dead team wouldn't even finish in the top fifty!

I don't believe that. Can you quote one?

Remember that you will lose points for every player in the starting eleven that you replace by an inferior player, that using better auto-subs will cost you more than 12.5, and that the subs always have to be in the same order and only play when someone in the starting eleven doesn't.

Of course, it would be very different if you were allowed to change your captain and select different starting elevens each game-week from your fixed 15-player squad, but then it wouldn't be a completely dead team.

Interesting, but updating that team to GW36 results in this:

            Pantilimon 109 (missing GW1-8, 33)
            Ivanovic 176 (missing GW27)
            Bertrand 137 (missing GW19, 24, 25, 26)
            Clyne 139 (missing GW19, 20, 32)
            Hazard 224 (missing GW27)
            Sanchez 200 (missing GW5,23, 24, 33)
            Eriksen 158 (missing GW27)
            Downing 149 (missing GW12)
            Aguero (C) 205*2 (missing GW16-20)
            Kane (V) 182 (missing GW3,5,6,8,27) +48 (GW16-20)
            Austin 165 (missing GW2,16,25,27,33)
            Lloris 39 (GW1-8)
            Siggy 50 (GW2,3,5,6,8,12,16,18,19,20,33)
            Yoshida 48 (GW5, 17, 19, 20, 23-27, 32, 33)
            Lescott 33 (GW16-20, 24, 25, 27)

            Total score: 2265 (50th)
            Simon March 2357.

I doubt whether the optimum affordable dead team could be improved sufficiently to make up the 88 point deficit.

... This suggests to me that the optimal affordable dead team will not win FPL every season, but that it might sometimes come very close to doing so.

I suspect however that the current season has been unusually favourable to the dead team, since it is must be very rare to have two such budget forwards (Kane and Austin) scoring so highly and not being significantly outscored by premium players (apart from Aguero, Hazard and Sanchez).

I might have a look at whether I can tweak your latest squad to make it affordable and add a few more points, but one thing it does show is that premium defenders such as Ivanovic and Terry can be valuable members of a balanced squad - except that this means missing out on Costa's flying start.

    Krul
    Terry - PvA - Kolarov
    Hazard - Silva - Coutinho - Sanchez
    Aguero - Vardy - Giroud

    Myhill - Skrtel - Morgan - Bolasie

    A. Coutinho + Bolasie > Cazorla + Gomez -4 (bench Vardy)
    B. Silva > Ramsey
    C. Skrtel > Koscielny (bench Terry)

Ideally want to keep Hazard as my ML leader sold him for Sanchez.

Looking forward to the Scoutcast tonight.
Former world #2 now #6 is on after captaining Sanchez.
Would have been 2nd and 19 points behind if he stuck with Aguero.
Kudos for having a shot at glory.

    --- Ivan --- Koscielny --- PvA --- Skrtel
    ------ Hazard ---- Ozil ---- Silva ------
    ------ Giroud ---- Benteke ---- Kane

Bench: Myhill ----- Eriksen, Schlupp, Bolasie
    No FT

Should I play Eriksen instead of a defender? I'm not too sure if so because I'm pretty confident in all my defenders getting clean sheets

Crazy to take a -8? 24 point lead at the moment in a cash ML

    Bertrand+Boyd+Vardy > Wasi+Gomez+Giroud

    Reasons:
Bertrand - total men in conceding of late
Wasi - cheap, decent fixtutrs, decent form

Boyd - crap team, nothing to play for and not scoring of late
Gomez - Double game week and Hazard rest a possibility, bench Hazard.

Vardy - Dont want to ship but provides coverage from Rival
Giroud - as above, provides cover from rival. We will have the same front three of Kun Giroud Kane.

Sterling>Gomez my move this week. To accompany PvA, Sanchez(c), Giroud and Kos.

Will leave me 2 FT's for GW38 which can't be bad. Might sell Kane vs Everton away then for Benteke, or a punt like Rooney...
