On Saturday afternoon, an unsuspecting couple moved into their new Singapore flat next door to a gentleman named Simon March. Twenty-four hours later, after being kept awake by solitary screams of frustration and joy, they were left wondering if they’d made a terrible error.

They needn’t have worried. What they were enduring was simply the extraordinary trials of the Fantasy Premier League’s leader, being tortured by the twists of the final day of the season, as Theo Walcott threatened to trample on his dreams.

As it happened, Walcott’s best efforts were to prove futile – Simon March claimed the FPL crown after spending 14 Gameweeks at the summit. However, it was far from plain sailing.

In tonight’s ScoutCast, Jonty and I talk to Simon and relieve last Sunday’s events and learn how Paul McShane and Sergio Aguero formed an unlikely alliance to steer him to victory.

If you’ve never listened to a ScoutCast before, I recommend you break that trend on this one occasion. It really is worthwhile listening to Simon’s tale to share just how it feels to claim the title on the very final day, whilst taking in his thoughts on they key strategies that helped him along the way.

As always, this episode was broadcast via Google Hangouts earlier this week. You can view the full version via the larger player below. For the edited audio version, you’ll need this link or the first player.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

The weighting is gradually less the further back you go. So the older seasons won't count for much at least

Solid player. Last year was my first time on FFS and seeing MArks shambles of a season, sometimes listening to the scoutcast I was thinking 'Why do I listen to this guy?' lol But he's generally fairly clued in

He has a great history. Can be excused for one bad season where baps, price rises and the inexplicable rise of Yaya and Ramsey caught many out.

haha same. last season was my first full FPL season and I was wondering the same. Funny thing was that he and Granville kept going on and on that Mark had to take a few hits to sort his team out.

But GW after GW, Mark get making 1 FT at a time. Was frustrating to see!!

I think it takes into account your last 6 or so seasons. The more recent seasons having a higher HOF weighting than older seasons.

You have to be part of the FFS league to get into the HOF

Exactly sarjeant! Some peoples arrogance is unreal! I never played properly until just before Christmas of 13/14 season. Found this site and flew up the rankings to 27k. Finished 5.4k this year. It's easy have good ranks when your on this site 24/7! I used to forget about my team for weeks on end. It's people saying stuff like what's been said above that puts people off posting! The sites about advice for everyone, not just the elite.

I can understand people getting a bit full of themselves when they can back it up. I can also understand how that isn't very appealing for new users. Its life though, people are full of it everywhere you go and people like to think a lot of themselves. Its sad really, especially when its something as menial as fantasy football.

agree here Champ. Not being patronizing but you've been perfectly unbiased in your replies and discussions with posters on this site, and obviously you've had the experience and performance to back it up.

Evs is another example of pride in achievement. There are some posters here who defienitely fall in the latter category who are basically let others make their decisions for them and then claim it as their own achievement.

Exactly. I've played FPL for three seasons.

                  1st made a team and that's it.
2nd was my first full season and on here and took a crazy -28 near the beginning (I thought it'd work)
3rd I played casual for a few months near Christmas because of work but still managed a 12k finish.

well having a hall of fame to rank players seems universally accepted as a great idea, but wanting to know where people are ranked is elitist? Hmmm

and a bad rank doesn't equal bad advice. Lots of people don't follow their own advice. Others play for sh1ts and giggles but think more seriously about advice they give.

Acqua tends to only be around on the boards when he does well. Haven't seen much of him this season since he's not had a great one but last season he was abit unbearable at times about him being 'elite' + throwing his rank around like a big swinging d1ck.

It does put people off but haters gonna hate - Trigger has backed it up though he's unlikable 99% of the time.

I think one possible idea is having additional badges for various achievements. It just adds another layer of credibility to some posters without being obtuse. It's what I do alot of the time too - search for credibility. It usually takes 2-3 clicks to do this (click username, click FPL link), having badges just eliminates the clicks.

FFS is like any other endeavour.

You should be proud of your successes and feel free to celebrate and champion these. But at the same time try and do it with a bit of humility and not be a d*ck.

You should not be condescending of others who are not as good, play for different reasons etc. again just try not to be a d*ck.

It's up to you who you listen to for advice as long as it's within the parameters above.

So like any other endeavour you do, don't be a d*ck basically 🙂

Btw this is not a dig at anyone in particular and certainly not at triggerlips or champ due to putting HOF ranking into their user name. People put other achievements like the cup, or UEFA comp. it's all fine and there is no difference, they all achievements we can be proud of.

And to be fair roger Federer is normally introduced like that so he does not need to. He is as proud as anyone else would be. precisely, its what irks me about people that dismiss long posts as tl;dr because people should be encouraged to spell out the thought processes when trying to give advice rather than blithely spouting thinks such as "obviously Hazard is the best captaincy choice." Burnley have accepted a £12million bid from Tottenham for Danny Ings

Liverpool are favourites to sign Danny Ings ahead of Tottenham but could be forced to pay a record £8million tribunal fee for the Burnley striker.

Although Spurs had a £12m offer accepted by Burnley on Wednesday, Ings has the final say because he becomes a free agent when his contract at Turf Moor runs out on June 30.

Really think next season could be Bolasie's breakthough, had a decent season this year but lacked end product mainly. We all know he has endless talent is is very quick, strong and skillfull - the perfect winger. Should come in fairly cheap too.

He's mentioned in the past he wants to score more goals and with fine tuning during the pre-season I think he could double his goal tally from this season. He did hit the crossbar multiple times this season as well, this video is certainly worth a watch:

    Are you a rank slave?
The HoF debate earlier has got me thinking why we play this game. Obviously most of us want to finish as high as possible or what is the point but as I see it there are two major ways of going about it

    1) Pick all the obvious and popular players and captain low risk players every week. Pay attention to what the top 10k are doing.
    2) Make short term moves based on gut feelings of who will do well and don't worry what will happen if you don't captain Aguero or Hazard

    1. Rhinos
      • 12 Years

Way 1 much more likely to consistently improve your rank but personally I find way 2 much more fun and a bugger test of your footy knowledge.
Having said that I recognise that the higher your rank the more tempting it is to revert to way 1

I think 99% of them play this game to achieve a decent rank..

"Pay attention to what the top 10k are doing."
this wouldn't help.. considering the price changes and fixtures.. you need a lot of catching up..

      • 12 Years
      11 years, 1 month ago

Rank is important to me but I like to think I was fairly maverick for a top 10k finisher this season and played my own game. Obviously not so far as to say punt on Adam Johnson (C) but I had no qualms in dropping my shining stars for the potential next big thing. Selling Baines, Siggy and Fabregas worked, selling Hazard, Silva and Kane didn't. In hindsight its easy to think 'well duh', but at the time each of those decisions seemed quite contentious. I also pulled of Eriksen and Walcott captaincies but bombed with Di Maria and Silva captaincies.

Next season I'm going to play more conservatively and follow the top 10k as its easier than researching for what I call educated punts.

yeah I don't think you need to be a dullard to do well. I always play instinctively. look at my history you'll see picks like alexis, Pelle, mane, ings, aj etc when they were completely unfashionable. Just had a look, I didn't realise you didn't actually have Kolarov all the time you were touting him, thanks though he was one my shining lights in the last few weeks!

He's such an fpl temptress like Wally, even after having him for 20 disappointing weeks in UFPL when no transfers were allowed i still wasn't disuaded 😛

Also well done on your top 100 a few years back!

yeah I was spewing man. I know he's absolute gold at the right times and always look to make room for him when I can. This time though I felt I had to focus on the double gameweeks instead. How wrong I was!
Cheers man I was going weekly hits galore that season too. Everything I touched turned to gold. My one cracker of a season.
I had a hell of a time the following year. Was ranked about 1.5m gw10 and I quit in a rage. Logged back in 3 weeks later to see three green arrows so kept playing 😆 Finished strong

Backing your gut tends to be the riskier option with higher reward. If you are right a good rank will follow, so I don't think 1 and 2 are mutually exclusive.

Its whether you tend to be more conservative (dullard) or more adventurous (maverick). I think players like Mark have a nice balance where he isn't afraid to back his instincts but isn't suicidal about completely ignoring highly owned players (last season being the exception).

yeah its all about balance, my point is i respect a player who backs his gut as much as someone who follows the crowd to defend his rank

I think everyone follows the crowd to a certain extent, we all want the players that do well and they tend to be popular. Sometimes the earlier adopters are the more adventurous players who make the call early whereas the dullards are more likely to be late to the party. I also think there is a spectrum where no one is entirely at either extreme and everyone who is good at FPL tends to err more towards Dullardness but with varying degrees of gut instinct thrown in.

It's pretty simple. Get the players you think will score the most points and captain the player you think will score the most points.

I'd neither follow the herd like a sheep nor deliberately differentiate. Certainly not until the last few weeks anyway.

What tends to happen though is that the player you think is the right choice due to form, stats, fixtures etc is the same player others also want so you can end up a bit template.

I tend to just pick the players I think will do well and don't worry about rank too much.

As the season starts to come to an end I pay a lot more attention to my rivals and who they have and who they're likely to captain.

I don't particularly like blocking tactics but it is something that can be done and I did it quite a bit with my captain in last few weeks.

Ultimately I don't care if I go with gut feeling or a boring pick as long as it wins me prizes 🙂

To some extent yes, in that I would very much like to finish in the top 1k but haven't yet managed it.
However I tend to play my own game and whilst risk averse in some ways do also tend to gamble a little too much at times perhaps. Perhaps i need to be a bit more disciplined without losing the side of my playing style that made me bring in Kane back in gwk 13 (which was just his third full game but the signs were very definitely all there.)

Re the scoutcast my fav bit was when Simon March said hed be trying again this year. I hate it when people say they lose interest coz they wont do as well again, its like a tennis player giving up after one grand slam (yes im looking at you Stan Wawrinka).
Each season is different and provides new challenges, i think people who quit are just scared tht if they have a nightmare it will make their previous season seem like a fluke

      relevant from Mertesacker:

"In the first months, in particular, it was quite difficult to come down and to forget that feeling of being a World Cup champion, It took nearly half a year to realise that. Most of the players [who had been involved in Brazil] got injured; I avoided that but didn’t play at my best and that was because I hadn’t experienced this feeling before. Sometimes I didn’t know how to handle the situation.

“The season started, everyone was setting new targets and you need to be really focused on that. Obviously with all the reviews and the pictures, and what you have gone through, that takes some time. To come back to a level where I know I can push on and put myself in a situation where I want to have new targets after the World Cup … it took half a year and I expected a worse season from myself, honestly. I expected something more severe.”

      http://www.theguardian.com/football/2015/may/28/arsenal-per-mertesacker-fa-cup-world-cup

Also that's a bit BS about Wawrinka isnt it?

I remember you had a stormer last season Rhinos 🙂

Depends on priorities. my MLs and playing with friends, including running a few leagues, are what keeps me going. I enjoy the rivalry, it keeps me interested in football, something to look forward to at the weekend.

A by product of that is generally a good, competitive rank since my ML rivals are all pretty clued in. Even if I won FPL, i'll be back playing the next season for sure.

I've played FPL for 2.5 seasons, this season my first to play really seriously as an FFS member as well. Lost terribly the last 2 seasons despite organizing the ML.

Won quite comfortably this season and so OR was just an impromptu target. But it's never an objective. But for others, it seems rank is very important and fair enough. Very impressive to see a play with a solid history.

Matt Martyniak (@spiderm4tt) on twitter is a great example of a champion that's still trying to win FPL again. won 2 seasons ago, and top 1k finishes last season and this season.

Sure there may be a noticeable skill gap at the moment but what can you expect when Man U pay more in player wages than all of women's football does in this country? https://arsenalssillyseason.wordpress.com/2013-summer/

that's just the rumours about one club in one transfer window. Then multiply it by the number of clubs in the league and bring up largely the same names again the next transfer window and yeah, I'm done.

Don't get me wrong I like the hypothetical conversations the bring up with how much is he worth? who would you drop to fit him in? who will they replace him with? type questions but nearly all of it is BS and I won't believe anything is happening until its club website official.

You do wind people up sometimes though. I know its deliberate and probably tongue-in-cheek but many don't realise and get annoyed - see below and how much the first reply has been upvoted!

I'm not sure which Ryan comment you are referring to but agree you cop a disproportionate amount of vitriol which is unnecessary. I'm not surprised you took yourself away to a different environment for much of the season.

A post bemoaning how people find you arrogant and self-centred?

Even though you try to help the community by talking down to them and belittling people if they don't read your blog and take your advice.

How arrogant of you to think that we care.

Woah just logged on and it's interesting this morning! With regard to the HOF, it's great to show consistency at a very high level, but I do take issue slightly with the idea that a low HOF ranking shows that you "don't know what you're talking about".

Take my history as an example: last season outside the top 1 million, one around 400k, one around 5-600k, one 30k, one 296, and this season 4.3k.

That, overall, is very very average, but I've only played properly for 2 of those years. The first 2 years I was a complete casual, forgot to make transfers most weeks, no thought went into them when I did, stopped playing towards the end of the season. The 3rd year, the 30k, I played for a ML prize and took it relatively seriously, but hadn't discovered this site/become fully engaged with the game.

I discovered this site pre-season 2012, took it very seriously, used stats for the 1st time, and finished 296. Last season I had a dead team from GW3 or so, rediscovered my interest this season, and finished just outside 4k.

I like to think I offer considered, thoughtful advice, and I don't think I'm bad at the game when I put my mind to it. 2 proper seasons, a 296 and a 4.3k - the HOF does not reflect that at all.

Basically, it's an interesting tool, but don't take it as gospel.

I only see it as a target, if I play the game for enough years then my average will even out a lot higher than it is now! Just aim to better your last season every year and number 1 gets ever closer..

    1) I finished around top 2.5k.

    2) I still have no idea how.

    3) I wouldn't take my advice either.

    4) In my defence, I was left unsupervised.
