Great Expectations

Great Expectations – Yannick Bolasie

In 2013/14, Yannick Bolasie’s fleet-footed trickery may have caught the eye but, with just four assists to his name, it’s fair to say that the Crystal Palace flier struggled to translate his displays into tangible returns. Bolasie remained a somewhat peripheral figure throughout the first half of last season, before Alan Pardew’s arrival at the club harnessed the winger’s unique talents to greater effect, resulting in a significant improvement in his Fantasy prospects.

Ahead of the new campaign, Bolasie will be considered as a real prospect to sit alongside midfield heavy-hitters. An unpredictable but potentially explosive mid-price asset, the Eagles’ “magic man” could easily justify the gamble. Here’s why…

Key Factors

  • Pardew’s appointment at Selhurst Park marked a distinct transformation in Palace’s playing style. The former Newcastle United boss released the shackles from their wingers, placing a greater emphasis on delivering crosses to the lone striker and midfield runners. This shift in approach was epitomised by the fact that Leicester City (470) were the only outfit to attempt more crosses than Palace (444) from the point that Pardew took the helm in Gameweek 21. Only five teams tallied more goals than Palace (27) during that period, while the Eagles ranked joint-third – behind only Manchester City and Arsenal – with regards to shots inside the box, heightening Bolasie’s attacking prospects.
  •

  • Bolasie made great strides on the productivity front in 2014/15. The DR Congo international recorded an impressive four goals and ranked joint-second, behind Cesc Fabregas (18), in terms of assists (12). Exploring his goal threat in greater detail, Bolasie upped the frequency of his efforts from 44 minutes to 41.9 minutes in 2014/15. He subsequently placed tenth among midfielders for total attempts (69), which was just three shy of Eden Hazard’s tally and three more than David Silva. What’s holding him back is a pitiful 5.8% goal conversion rate which, if improved upon, could make him a mid-price powerhouse. Nonetheless, Bolasie also improved from a creative standpoint, executing a key pass every 64.2 minutes in 2014/15, as compared to every 84.4 minutes in the previous season.
  •

  • Bolasie’s out-of-positon potential further augments his appeal and will perhaps persuade some Fantasy managers to choose him over team-mate Jason Puncheon. Pardew fielded the Rushden & Diamonds academy product centrally – as a support/lone striker or a false nine – at choice moments throughout the season. In fact, his 24-point haul against Sunderland – courtesy of a hat-trick and an assist – was the product of a central role, while Pardew wasn’t afraid to deploy Bolasie up front against Chelsea and Liverpool in Gameweeks 35 and 37 respectively.
  •

  • Bolasie was valued at 5.5 at the start of the last campaign and is in line for price rise to the 6.5–7.5 mark, having contributed to 16 of Palace’s 47 goals. Taking the season as a whole, Bolasie carded a points per game average (ppg) of 3.9, yet comparing this metric under the tenures of Pardew (4.9 ppg) and Warnock (3.1 ppg) better exposes his evolution as a Fantasy asset. The Lyon-born wide man contributed to 10 of the Eagles’ 21 goals upon his return from the African Cup of Nations, highlighting his focal role in their attack.
  •

  • A firm favourite of Pardew’s, Bolasie position as a starter appears to be under little threat. The Palace head coach feels that the winger will attract a host of suitors if he can improve his finishing, given that Bolasie’s goal output doesn’t yet do justice to his spellbinding build-up play:

“He needs to find the end product and he’ll work hard on that next year. We might have a problem next year if he really starts banging them in. The thorn in his side is actual goals. Just on this season, it would be a mistake for a top club to get him because I don’t think he’s ready. But he will be ready in maybe a year or so when he’s got over that final hurdle. Then there will be no stopping him. He’s a fantastic boy and a fantastic talent. I love him to bits. I call him my “magic man”.

Wilshere and Pogba as a central midfield pairing would offer very little defensively, the team would get caught out, just as Arsenal always do, with 2 attacking central midfielders and 2 marauding full backs, Kompany has been dreadful for the last 2 years, and while I think Mangala will come good, he is still error prone and has mental lapses. I'm not a huge Sterling fan (as everyone knows), and De Bruyne is still unproven at the top level.

Yes but you'd need to spend £20m to have even a cat in hell's chance of Saints accepting the offer - we literally just spent £10m on his services. If Lovren's transfer is anything to go by, we'd want to double our money.

Plus he's very contented to be finally playing regular first team football. He's well aware of the problems of going to a 'big' team and ending up on the bench.

            20m sounds good to me.

We'd be able to bin Kolarov for 12-15m. So that'd be 5-8m for a home grown and younger LB.

            I'd take that any day.

              20m for Bertrand?!?!?! He's 6 weeks short of 26, not 22.

Please tell me who would spend £15m on Kolarov. He can't defend. 😛

12m for Kolarov sounds reasonable then? Plenty of Italian teams would take him for that price.

So that'd be 8m for a English LB who could easily give us 5 solid seasons.

                Sounds very good to me.

See above. £20m - Saints would want to double their money on the investment they made in January. (This is judging by the precedent set by the Lovren deal). But you aren't linked with him and we signed him 6 months ago, after he spent an age at a 'big' club that didn't respect his merits. The club don't want to sell and the player doesn't want to move. Would you rather play a promoted teams defender in an easy home fixture or play a PL side's defender in an easy away or ok-ish home fixture?

So, with too much time on my hands, I've had a look at the odds* for all sides in terms of predicted number of Clean Sheets for the opening four GWs (after which I may well WC). The odds are converted into a decimal (e.g. odds of 3/2 = 40% chance = 0.4) and added to give a total out of 4**.

    Chelsea...............1.96
    Man United..........1.78
    Arsenal................1.70
    Man City..............1.68
    Liverpool..............1.55
    Southampton.......1.48
    Tottenham............1.30
    Stoke...................1.25
    Leicester..............1.15
    Sunderland..........1.13
    Everton................1.06
    Aston Villa............1.06
    Norwich................1.05
    Swansea..............1.04
    West Ham............1.03
    Bournemouth.......0.98
    Crystal Palace......0.96
    West Brom...........0.87
    Newcastle.............0.83
    Watford................ 0.81

N.B. While these guys are very good at their jobs and estimating probability, it should be noted that odds depend somewhat on the market i.e. big clubs with large fan bases and historical success are over-valued (e.g. Liverpool) whilst unfashionable ones are undervalued because not many people back them (e.g. West Brom).

*All odds taken from Oddschecker (best odds)

**Technically odds actual total to around 110% to create profit, so the maximum estimated clean sheets figure is actually around 4.4

This reminds me of another project I'm working on.

There's an inherent flaw in the betting system, and there's a way to guarantee winnings by combining various odds across different betting companies, with a specific ratio of spreading the cash. I've written a program that finds these guaranteed wins. I've used it once, and made a crisp £20 from nothing.

      1. Bauerhaus 24
        • 10 Years
        8 years, 10 months ago

Yeah this is known as arbing. Its pretty rare that the yield is less than 100% though (as it needs to be for the profits to overlap) and often happens in lower leagues, and even then the yield is pretty slow. Impressive to create your own programme though, the existing software is expensive. Also, just a warning, if you do use this system, try and avoid really specific amounts (e.g. place a £70 stake instead of £71.26) - if bookies detect that you're arming, your accounts will get closed. Another way of securing a no-lose bet is to place a bet and then lay the result you backed on a site like betfair.

        1. Piggs Boson
          • 12 Years
          8 years, 10 months ago

Yeah, the plan is to partner with a couple of colleagues and all make 3 isolated bets with different companies, then split the winnings. There is then no way to link the 3 bets. My program has found a few in the Women's WC, but I don't want to do it again until I find my investors.

The problem arbing these days is the firms go out of their way to close accounts down, either that ofpr restrict to small stakes. Too make it work to a decent income it takes quite large stakes
Expect some account closures with no explanation

Rounded numbers and separate people for each bet. Can't see how they'd even begin to suspect anything, even with large values. Some companies may even make money out of me.

if you stay small they might not worry

They do notice if you bet online, their computers pick it up. They will quickly realise you only bet when their odds are bigger than those offered bupy other firms

They close those accounts frequently, and link them to IPs

Trust me, i know more a out this stuff than most

Best chance is to do all your betting in the shops, and keep changing areas.
It works best in london due to the huge number of firms and outlets.
We used to spend a week around the chiswick area, then hit south london, then switch to north london. It requires a lot of work.

Slightly easier on football than horse racing as prices dont dissapear so quickly , but rewards are lower

                    Interesting.

What about 3 different people in different areas of the country? Seperate IPs, seperate IDs, and no way to link. No need to move around then.

The golden age of arbing is now over.Opportunities are fewer than ten years ago and margins are less. The lower margins mean you do need to put thousands down to make it worthwhile.

The exchanges was where i made most of my money, trading within single events, but the premium charge on profitable accounts which betfair introduced was a big disincentive
Then they introduced premium charge 2 that meant once your lifetime profit was over 250k it went up to 60% at that point i "retired"

                        Yeah, I'm avoiding exchanges now.

I've analysed potential profits. From a £1000 bet I can make £50 on average. I do this 4 times a month and I've added £200 on my pay packet. Not the profits of old, but still something. Double the stake, I get £400 a month. My program is finding a lot more than you think, and this is off-season!

Trippier can actually cross the ball, unlike the RB's they have at the moment. With Kane being so good in the air I think it's a good move.

I expect him to take the Bavies role, as long as Walker is around.

Maybe they fancy him as a mid. I'm sure he'd be capable of it.

In an online poll asking who was better, Henry or Bergkamp, Arsenal fans voted for Wilshere

As a Burnley fan I'm far sadder to see Trips go than Ings. Gave 100% every game, a real player. Can cross the ball brilliantly and at a team with better quality players on the end could do very well. Will play for England.

    Pulis H/A figures

    WBA: (CS = 6:4) (GC = 10:12) in 18 games

    CRY: (CS = 6:4) (GC = 12:15) in 26 games

    STK: (CS: 7:5) (GC = 22:23) in 38 games(12/13)

Somebody joked about tripling up on WBA defenders when he first went there....turned out to be a great idea if they did.

West Brom weren't even bad defensively under Irvine. He's just turned them into a fortress.

What does he actually do though ?....It's not like you see ten players parked behind the ball, it's obviously a bit more subtle than that.

I'm not sure. Their defensive stats aren't even that good, it's just clean sheets! I don't think the bookies fully understand. There may be money to made there for anyone that bets. I don't bet anymore. Arbing isn't betting 😉

I know...quite mediocre for chances conceded, same when he was at Palace and Stoke.
