The Numbers Game – 2014/15 Review – Liverpool

Having narrowly finished second to champions Manchester City in 2013/14, Liverpool’s prospects were dealt a bitter blow last summer after 31-goal Luis Suarez was snapped up by Barcelona. With the Uruguayan gone, and Daniel Sturridge restricted to seven starts due to injuries, it was a season to forget for Brendan Rodgers’ outfit.

In our latest articles for members, we cast an eye over the Merseysiders, assessing their main goal threats and chief creators in the first year of the post-Suarez era.

I'm looking forward to the RMT's starting. Will make a nice change from all the Liverpool/United/City predicted line-ups (including all players that the club has been linked with) on here.

Fimino. Depay isnt playing at the Copa America. Koeman also said depay is sh*te. Apparently Van Gaal was under the impression that he was signing Depay until Edward Woodward told him he signed Memphis. Cried for days, he did

Don't know. Firmino at the moment - more proven in a much tougher league. Depay has a lot more potential though IMO, and he's only 21, whereas Firmino will soon be 24.

Casting my bias being a Liverpool fan away, I would just rate Firmino higher on account
of playing in a tougher league and doing well for more than 1 season

Depay has the tools to be explosive and is also an amazing prospect

The better thing is that we are getting such players who have flair back into the PL

What? This is not even a valid question. Memphis had one season of cute dribbles and FKs in a very ordinary league, while Firmino has been consistently playing well in one of the top 4 leagues in the world for 3-4 years now.

Maybe Depay will be better than Firmino when he's 24, but it is not even a debate now.

    ------------------------------------Can
    ------------Milner--------------------------------Henderson
    ------------------------------Coutinho
    ------Sturridge------------------------------------Firmino

I'd argue that is a really balanced attack, though I have my doubts whether BR will line them up that way. The defence, that is still in catastrophic shape, they should just keep Sakho and Moreno from the current lot.

Clyne and a top CB, and I'd say they end 4th next season. 😉

Agreed - Can has the potential to be an excellent CDM. It was a shame to see BR play him OOP at RB. He did ok for a few games but it's not fair to expect a young player to do this week after week if he's not comfortable with it.

There's a lot of different ways they could set up that front six. Can and Henderson will be the two more defensive midfielders, and Sturridge the main man up front, but Milner, Coutinho and Firmino can all play centrally or wide, whilst Milner and Coutinho are just as capable in a midfield three as they are in an attacking three.

I think there will be a lot of fluidity, with Milner tucking and helping to give some defensive solidity when Firmino and Coutinho are given license to combine in attack, regardless of their starting positions. It's up to Rodgers to find the best system to get the most out of these players, because they look to have a great combined set of qualities, with plenty of work rate, creativity and goalscoring potential amongst them. They really need a settled team, with Sturridge fit, and a lot of work on the defence as you say.

      1. Saniul
        • 11 Years

Yes, I'd agree with you, they'd need a find settled front 6, however fluid the formation be, and those 6 I'd say would be a good way to start.

Not Skrtel? Defence needs improving and Clyne is looking likely. Depending how we play, Coates looked class at the end of last season for Sunderland and he'll be back this year.

        • 11 Years

Yes, Coates could stay as a back-up CB, but they really need one top CB suited to a back-4, like say of Koscielny/Kompany quality. I can see that being their priority to spend the Sterling money.

How do I go about becoming a part owner of a Brazilian football player? Seems very lucrative. Maybe I'll just go on holiday to Brazil with a load of contracts and get anyone I see playing football in the street to sign them. If I sign a couple of hundred up then the odds must be decent that one of them will come good 🙂

Spurs could well surprise this season. Despite being defensively absent, we have seen glimpses of what they are capable of: example being that dismantling of the League Champions.

If they can hold onto Kane this summer, I can see them making waves... not quite top four waves, but enough to get close.

Well done to Hoffenheim, whose sporting director Alexander Rosen has played a blinder over the Firmino transfer. The German club have been signalling for a while that they would be willing to sell, but only at a very high price, which is why Dortmund and Bayern stayed out of negotiations. The player's agent Roger Wittmann helpfully fuelled the bidding war among English clubs by saying that he would move "to a Premier League team", but not naming which one. Ker-ching!

A fee of €41 million makes Firmino the most expensive Bundesliga transfer, which is very good business given the player's relative inexperience. Hoffenheim have already bought Fabian Schär (for only €3.5m), Jonathan Schmid and Kaderabek, as well as getting Volland to extend his contract. With the exception of Southampton, Premier League clubs still don't show this degree of common sense in buying cheap and selling high at the right time.

That's not to say that Firmino isn't a really good player, because he's a major talent and an absolute joy to watch. I'm not sure where he fits into the Liverpool team though, as he may end up treading on Coutinho's toes if Rodgers isn't able to find a successful formation.

Firmino's neither a replacement for Sterling, nor an out-and-out goalscorer, and you hope that Rodgers wouldn't just stuff him out on the right wing. Mind you, as Rodgers hasn't worked out yet that Emre Can is a good defensive midfielder (is he watching the U21 competition?) and not a right-back, anything is possible.

What do you make of the Depay transfer then? That goes up to 32 mil for a less established player coming from an easier league, granted 2 years younger but they seem similar on levels of value?

Too much as well. But United make more money than Liverpool. Depay is a lot younger so has a lot of room to improve. Can afford to have a few years learning to play in the premier league.

"Rodgers hasn't worked out yet that Emre Can is a good defensive midfielder (is he watching the U21 competition?) and not a right-back, anything is possible."

I just want to comment on this line. It's been a common theme on here in the last few days, and I don't think it's fair. Getting the best out of a team doesn't necessarily mean getting the best out of individual players. Wilshere isn't at his best deep for England, but it's the position that is best for England. Liverpool had an amazing run of form when they switched to 3 at the back with Can at right centre back, and it gave them control from the back that they had lacked. Apart from a couple games against good wingers, I thought he did a good job.

Rodgers isn't a defensive mastermind, but he is a good coach. Manager of the year last year lest we forget.

If he'd strengthened the squad with the correct personnel, Can would never have had to play there. He did play well most of the time, I agree. But he could have influenced the team's performances infinitely better from midfield. Comparing Wilshere switching from CM to DM is hardly the same as seeing Can dumped at RCB/RB.

"If he'd strengthened the squad with the correct personnel"

I agree with this. He's been poor in the transfer market for the most part, although I'm not sure how much say he has over transfers.

"But he could have influenced the team's performances infinitely better from midfield"

I'm not so sure. The switch of system completely changed their season around. They were the best team in the league for a couple months from January if I recall correctly. I think Can playing at the back was an integral part of that. Especially if you consider that Sakho was injured for a good period, which meant the only other options would probably have been Johnson.

"Comparing Wilshere switching from CM to DM is hardly the same as seeing Can dumped at RCB/RB."

It's the the magnitude of difference between positions that matter, it's just an example of getting the best out of certain players doesn't necessarily create the best 'team'.

He does, but playing Can as right CB was ultimately the right decision at the time, regardless of whether they had got to that situation because of wrong decisions.

He was giving Can game time in his first season at the club as well as helping him get used to the physical side of the premier league. This year he'll be CM.

He was put in a back 3 because we needed somebody to fit in there who was comfortable on the ball and he was exactly that.

I guess it's the bitter game between ManU and Liverpool fans here as these clubs are rivals and both were allegedly after both Depay and Firmino. We shouldn't get too engaged in that battle, they will not end it until one player flops and another succeeds and I don't think that will even happen, so this stupid fight may continue for another 2-3 years.

Okay, first a long post alert, and then:

Defender/midfielder/winger on either flank. Played RM and LM this season, earlier used to be RB. So very much an all-rounder, a kind of jack of all trades, in a good sense. Pacy, tenacious runner with good tactical awareness and enough technique to keep the ball in speed, accurate passing and crossing, takes indirect set pieces pretty well too and has for 3 seasons now been making good runs to the box from deep and shown he can finish the chances he gets. While I'm talking about him as an attacking player here, one should not forget that while he's been moved to higher up the field he used to be a defender and is always capable to take his defensive duties in midfield.

To my mind he would have fit very well in Klopp's Dortmund. This season a bit lower conversion rate than usually, which is probably half due to having to shoot from more distance, and half due to a normal fluctuation. He's not as good finisher as 2012/2013 makes one believe, but better than this season does. In a way this was probably a good moment to buy him and he's likely to score more goals if getting equal chances. Seen that Hoffenheim is much stronger attacking side getting much more shots, and shots in the box, than Freiburg, he's likely to get more shots and goals with them. The last time Freiburg averaged anywhere as close to as many shots in penalty area per game as Hoffenheim has averaged last 2 seasons was when Schmid scored 11 goals as RB/RM.

This sounds a bit of an overpraise, but I don't want to depict him as a lovechild of Messi and Schneiderlin, just as a proven to be a reliable player on flank in every aspect of the game and able to add something extra with set pieces. I do praise him this much though: I wonder why hasn't been called up for France as they're a bit weak on RB position and with his versatility and work rate he could be in any case useful as an utility player - if you look past at the historical champions, they always have that sort of players.

Nice business by Hoffenheim with Schär, Schmid and Kaderabek. Wasn't aware they had all signed for Hoffenheim. Renewing Volland too! Looking good!

And I agree that there's a worry about how Firmino will be used at Liverpool as BR particularly emphasised him being exciting as a player that can play any position behind the striker. That sounds bad, because Firmino is definitely AMC or a support-striker, meant to play just behind the striker.

      - A better Fixture Ticker that shows full season, allows reordering to find rotations etc
      - Members stats for teams and individual players
      - Comparison Tool, which lets you compare two players you're trying to choose between
      - Members' stats tables. Doosra makes some very popular ones
      - Members' Articles (like this one)

Most members would say that their Fantasy Football performance (i.e. rank) improves, and for lots of people, winning their cash mini-league pays for the membership.

For me, the best thing is just the added richness of playing around with all those toys. Someone once defined any game as "a series of interesting decisions". For me, these tools make the decisions of FPL more interesting and that's worth every penny considering how much time I spend on this damned game 🙂

Well the policy is 'sell high, buy low'. 😉 And then we'll probably sell that guy etc etc. JWP is probably ready but I wouldn't be comfortable with him playing the combative role, fairly restrained role that Schneiderlin plays.

Of the names mentioned I can only see Clasie being realistic.

I think the gossip columns are best avoided, at this time of year especially.

I didn't think it was really a transfer policy with saints to buy low, you seem to do a fantastic job with developing talented young players.

I'll be disappointed if JWP doesn't play regularly next year.

But the buzz around the columns suggest we're in the market and we have allegedly had a bid for Krychowiak rejected which implies we are seeking a replacement - not that I see that particular moving coming off. Song seems realistic - available for little money with PL experience. West Ham are favourites but we could pull it off. So is Cabaye - he wants a move away and Palace have also been linked. You won't see JWP play as Schneiderlin, it would be a nightmare.

The buzz around gossip columns is usually funded by agents looking to get the best deal for their player.

Obviously Schneiderlin has publicly said he wants to leave, so any agent with a player fitting that mould will be touting their player out to the press.

I'm looking forward to Man Utd lining up with the best 6 centre backs in world football next year, all punting the ball long to Fellani, or Messi.

If you honestly think we'll play JWP, a CAM/RM, at CM/DM then that's cool. You're just in for a shock 😀 If we didn't buy anyone, Steven Davis would be the one to slot in there. 🙂 But I have every confidence that some of the £20+ million will go into a new player.

In part yes. The other side is that many of the rumours are also probably true but a team can't just land whoever they like whenever they like. Big teams will be looking at good players all the time...it's their job. It's the press that decide that looking at players means they must be wanting to buy them.

I think the days of OOP midfielders who really play up front are coming to an end. Most managers seem to like a -

      -------------GK--------------
      DEF--DEF--DEF-DEF
      -------MID---MID------
      ---MID--MID---MID--
      ----------FWD-----

Or some variation of. I think the only real OOP players we may get are defenders who end up in midfield

Plenty of mids play OOP without it being recognised. The trick is to ignore the published position and check the average position per player each week to find those mids that play higher up the pitch than their respective strikers on a regular basis (that and touches in the box).
      GW1 last season
      Sanchez... http://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/matches/755303/
      Hazard... http://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/matches/755304/
I posted each mid who took up that position after every GW last season for about the first ten weeks, which included the likes of Downing, ADM, Chadli and co.
Don't just go off the official pigeon holed OOP as per the team sheet...look at the facts.

Rank the defensive abilities of the newly promoted sides from best to worst with reasons?

    For me

    1) Norwich - PL experienced players and managed to retain most of them, especially at the back, also seemed defensively sound under Neil last season.

    2) Watford

    3) Bournemouth - I ranked them third just cause I think they are a very attacking team, I read an article on their tactics and their full backs almost turn into wingers while going forward, they might struggle to cope up with the teams in the Premier League if they go on with the same tactics.

Obviously my knowledge about the newly promoted sides is next to zilch cause I have only read stuff about them and haven't really followed them.

I think your order is correct. Norwich number 1 and not too much between WAT and BOR. Bournemouth seemed to blow other teams away with their attacking last year. The opposition was always on the back foot which led to clean sheets. They will still attack this year i recon but will be picked off more.

Bournemouth is a tricky one as they did well defensively last season partly due to the amount of possession they had in games. They may well have a lot of possession at home to lower half teams this season but away from home and against the top sides I'd imagine this would decrease.

    7. Valar(Keith)

Not really expecting defensive returns from any of them tbh.. Bournemouth play a bit like BlackPool and i can see them having problems if they go at EPL teams the same way Blackpool did. I read on here that Watford had the 5th best defensive record in the Championship. Does not bode well for the EPL. Norwich could do ok.. i remember getting loads of points from Martin and Bassong the last time Norwich were in the EPL. If Martin goes to RB i may take a punt on him

Great signing for Liverpool. As a United fan, I don't think he's exactly what we needed so it makes sense if we didn't go for him despite his obvious potential and quality. Will be good to see him in the PL, shame it's with Liverpool though.

With the new found responsibility he was in positions and making tackles he never usually would have.

Good management. Give them some responsibilities so they feel that they have more ownership and will end up staying at the club.

Though I would think they're in trouble if DDG departs. Lloris would be a decent replacement if they didn't go for someone like Leno.

Lloris is an upgrade from DDG. If they get him and a good DM and another strong CB they can play much higher defence line than they've played and become a more threatening team and would finally get past City again. And the thing is they can easily afford all that.

You honestly think he's an upgrade, even when you take the age difference into account? That's really interesting.

I think he is very easily an upgrade to DDG. Both top notch shot stoppers, but Lloris is very strong coming out of his goal line, controlling the box and its surroundings, which DDG is even relatively weak at.

And age difference just 4 years, not huge for GK's. About development, you may end up being disappointed with DDG: I doubt he will ever reach the level of all-round game that Lloris has, and I also doubt him repeating his last season's beyond spectacular close range saving percentage in a whole season ever. So this is a very good moment to sell DDG and get a GK that allows you to play a higher defence line and dominate the game more, which is something ManU should be looking to do.

That's all I have to say about that. For me, if ManU sells DDG for some €30m to Real and pays some €15M-€20M to Spurs for Lloris, they're doing incredibly good business and strengthening their team seriously.

An upgrade might be a stretch but there isn't a lot in it between the players at the moment. DDG however is still a long way from his prime and will continue to get better and better.

They're adapting the Arsenal career path system where naming player a captain is soon followed by a transfer to a bigger club. 😀

This would suggest Lloris will move first, for Kane to inherit the captaincy before his transfer to ManU.

If Lloris is serious about moving he should refuse the captaincy. Its an interesting ploy thats for sure.

Inter Milan full-back Davide Santon could be set for an immediate return to the Premier League this summer, with Crystal Palace interested in the player, reports Gazzetta dello Sport.

I thought he did pretty fine towards the end of the season for a defender joining new team in new league in the middle of the season. You should always take into account the serious changes in team styles and player's role. Played very well in the win against Liverpool.

Not saying he'd be as good as Santon though.

Atletico Madrid midfielder Arda Turan wants a move to the Premier League this summer and has three offers from top English clubs, according to his agent.

The Turkey international has two years left on his contract with Madrid - is he on his way to the Premier League?

"His intention is to leave Spain this summer," Turan's agent Ahmet Bulut told Spanish sports newspaper AS.

"His will is to leave and to play in the Premier League, that is the path he would like to take to continue his career.

"We are currently in talks with three teams but I cannot reveal the names of the clubs.

"However, I can tell you that they are the best in England and in European football."

Well, one or the other I would suggest Ahmet..

        Hendo - Can't - Allen
        Frimpong - Dench
        Ings
