Pre-Season

Sleeper – Romelu Lukaku

Our “Sleeper” series of articles focusses on those previously profitable Fantasy assets who underperformed in the season gone by. Everton’s Romelu Lukaku fits that description perfectly.

Following a successful loan spell at Everton during the 2013/14 season, where he scored 15 league goals, hopes were high for the big Belgian last time out. Lukaku made his move to Goodison Park permanent, signing for a club record fee of £28m from Chelsea, after making only 15 appearances during his time at Stamford Bridge.

Handed a price tag of 9.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, the Toffees frontman made a reasonable start to last season, scoring twice and providing an assist during the first five Gameweeks. Following blanks against Liverpool and Manchester United, he found the net four times in his next seven outings, although crucially, he failed to register a single double-figure haul over that period.

The 22-year-old forward endured a barren spell between Gameweek 15 and 22, registering just a single assist, before grabbing the winner in the 1-0 victory at Crystal Palace on January 31.

The second half of the season again highlighted the Belgian’s inability to register consistent attacking returns, scoring attacking points in just four of his final 13 appearances. Lukaku’s first double-digit haul came in the 3-0 win against Newcastle in Gameweek 29, while his highest score of the season arrived against West Ham in Gameweek 37, where he bagged a goal, an assist and full bonus in the 2-1 win.

Although he excelled in the Europa League by scoring eight times, Lukaku was far from prolific on the domestic stage and converted just 9.5% of his scoring opportunities. The Toffees striker ranked joint 20th among forwards for bonus points (with 12 accrued), compared to eighth for total points. He ended the campaign with 135 points, less than he had managed over the previous two seasons (168 and 159), averaging just 3.75 points per appearance.

THE PROSPECTS

Partly due to their involvement in the Europa League, it’s fair to say that the Merseysiders endured a difficult year. Manager Roberto Martinez never seemed entirely sure on whom to play in tandem with Lukaku, and with rest and rotation rife, the likes of Ross Barkley, Aiden McGeady, Kevin Mirallas, Steven Naismith, Aaron Lennon, Leon Osman, Arouna Koné and Samuel Eto’o were all tried in the positions behind the striker.

This time around, though, the Toffees won’t have the distractions of the Europa League, which has seen the league form of the likes of Tottenham, Swansea and Stoke also suffer in recent years. Hopes are high, then, that, with less need to tinker due to fatigue, Martinez’ side will replicate the displays that saw them earn a fifth-placed finish in his first year at the helm in 2013/14.

Despite hinting at his preference Champions League football, Lukaku is expected to stay at Goodison for the season ahead and a price of 8.5 to 9.0 is anticipated for a player who is now the Toffees number one spot-kick taker, having usurped Leighton Baines in the pecking order.

One look at the underlying stats certainly bodes well for Lukaku’s prospects in 2015/16. As the focal points of his side’s attack, the target man sat fifth amongst forwards for total attempts (105, just eight less than Harry Kane), whilst Lukaku’s tally of 66 efforts inside the box was just one less than both Harry Kane and Diego Costa. Sitting fourth amongst frontmen for attempts on target (41) in 2014/15, and fifth for chances created (38), Lukaku – as he’s shown before – could be a real Fantasy force if he and his team-mates can start sticking away their opportunities with greater regularity.

On the downside, the opening schedule has done little to persuade us he will be worthy of our initial investment. Aside from their home opener against Watford, Martinez’ men then face a run which pits them against last season’s top eight, in addition to a trip to West Brom, in the following nine fixtures. Given that the schedule eases significantly from Gameweek 11 onwards, many Fantasy managers will be happy to afford Lukaku the chance to ease his way into the new campaign before eyeing up his potential acquisition.

Morning all, anyone going to go near Lukaku? I'm hoping he has a big season, but I'll take some convincing.

Good. Something has to be top of the page.

I don't think anyone will touch him for the first few months until that dirty patch dries up. Hopefully by then we'll have established if he's on penalties and we'll see when the run gets easier.

From a "real life" football view, I hope he's not on penalties, Baines is our best penalty taker by a mile. Hopefully Lukaku can find some form in that horrible fixture run.

If not too personal, how did last night go BK?

Yeah it seems strange that he got passed over so often at the end. Do you think he's bottled them?

Not sure mate. I think i've taken it from 100% no chance, to maybe 30/40% chance of a reconsideration while she's away. She was glad I came - which was nice - but we weren't an item when I left. Have to hope the Spanish sun makes her think more about it being a 'mistake' (her words) to end it.

I don't know what happened with penalties, he missed one, Mirallas took the next one, and he seems to have just given up on them. I don't think he's the most vocal or forceful, but Martinez should insist he takes them (unless his confidence is completely shot).

Good luck with it mate, how long's she away for? If it was a mistake then I'm sure she'll realise.

Yeah Mirallas missing that one was the perfect chance for him to have them back for good. I found it very strange that it continued to be passed around after that, so it could be confidence now.

Away til late Monday night. They're a group of 14, of which 12 are in relationships. Good chance that a few questions or stories here and there might make her think about things a bit.

That gives you a great chance BK. Speaking from experience, girls love to talk about how happy they are with their relationships, even when they're not. It's a bit like male football fans pretending that their latest signing is the best thing ever, even when it's Guy Demel. Good luck!

We did, I still think he'll be a very good player - he's only just turned 22. If you think of where, say, Drogba was at that age, Lukaku should not be written off as a flop. His first touch, however, needs huge, huge work.

Agreed on the first touch! He is a funny one as he's not a target man and not a finisher but obviously has a lot of pace and power. Hopefully Big Dunc can help him to develop.

He had a good season and scored 20 goals. People's perception on here is skewed by the happenstance that only 10 of them were in the PL. If he had scored the bulk of his goals in league play everyone would be pencilling him in.

He did score more than people seem to realise, but I watched him every week and he was largely very disappointing, he seemed to go backwards (as did the whole team). I don't think we play to his strengths a lot of the time though.

              Coleman-Jagielka-Stones-Baines

That's a top 4 defence right there. Better than United and City have.

Midfield is capable of being solid if Martinez stops rotating so much.

Deolefeu will add flair, Mirallas will hopefully leave and take his issues with him. Lukaku is a beast on his day. Squad has a lot of potential.

The squad is good, but Jagielka is 33 in August and it showed last season. The defence on paper is solid, but Howard is ropey and we have no back up, we have no cover if we lose a centre-back and, most importantly, Martinez is no good at organising a defence.

Barry is completely shot, and I am a big fan of Besic, but I see Martinez going with a middle 2 of McCarthy and Cleverley. I don't see enough defensive steel there, I think we could be exposed, particularly with Martinez's poor defensive acumen.

I'm a big fan of Deulofeu, I'll be very happy with that. If Mirallas leaves, we're still short. Osman and Pienaar are both 33/34, and Barkley really needs to kick on, because like Lukaku, he seems to have gone backwards.

Fundamentally, I am still not convinced at all by Martinez. He inherited a very good, solid side, and while he added some flair 2 years ago, I'm worried that the core will crumble.

Jags will have less games with no EL and 33 is not old for a CB. Agree about Howard but Robles is OK, right?

Besic I also rate (not for FPL). McCarthy and Besic would be a decent pair.

Barkley I agree about but he's young and talented. Maybe an additional AM would help but there are plenty of those out there, even on loan. Tweaking the attacking side of the team Martinez should be good at.

You can look at it either way. But Everton have a fairly strong squad position to build from in my view.

Martinez needs to stop endlessly tinkering with the midfield. Barkley and Delofeou + a CDM and a box to box midfielder would be great to watch & could be effective too.

Disagree re Robles- seen him a few times with Everton and Wigan and he was awful.

I may be doing him a disservice but in the 3 or 4 games I saw him in I couldn't watch the screen when he tried to come for a cross. Made a couple of good saves then fumbled a simple shot from distance. I'd say that do need a GK as Howard's clearly past it but I'm not an expert.

My goalkeepers will probably depend on my defensive players (and their teams). Since we don't know prices I can't really pencil in many 4.5/4.0 options so I can't say for sure, looking at Myhill/Ruddy, Myhill/Bournemouth or just Myhill or Panti.

Well apparently the transfer committee are now reduced to negotiating only. Rodgers has full say on who to go for and full responsibility for their success or lack of. He used to choose a position to strengthen and then get back a list of 3 players to choose from. A stupid system that left him with a choice between ballotelli, Remy and etoo for example. If he had control then we'd have bony or Jackson Martinez right now instead of balotelli.
A result if the meeting a few weeks ago. Make or break season for Rodgers though I expect him to thrive with the shackles off

Some shocking buys. Whilst I can't disagree with the quality of Studge I can also see how he could be classed as a bad buy. It's not like he suddenly became injury prone after they bought him.

People seem to be forgetting Liverpool lost their most influential player to a team who went on to win the treble this season.... Anyone thinking this wouldn't have an impact on Liverpool for the season, compelled with running so close to the league title.

Liverpool had a season in the doldrums last season and didn't buy any experienced quality... they will be back this year.

Will they? Milner is a decent player but he's no Suarez (but then who is). No idea about this Firminho guy but people seem to be rating him.

Not sure if they can break top 4 though with who they've bought so far. A lot will rest on whether Sturridge can actually play in a few games.

Yes I was telling everyone a year ago that fourth would be a great achievement after the upheaval last summer. We were built around Suarez and brought in many young talents that would need time. Many fans expected another title challenge which is just silly. The season went about as I expected unti the terrible painful run in.

Think he'll be nailed on? The problem is that, if they play 3 attacking midfielders, they're always going to have a big money signing on the bench (Firmino, Lallana or Markovic).

I wonder what they'll do with Markovic, I'm guessing he was bought as one for the future but I can't see where he'll get any game time, and there's no way they'll recoup the money spent on him.

Does he actually have that potential, or was he just an expensive mistake?

He has great potential imo but his mentality is iffy and he's not really an intelligent footballer (yet) . Still very early days for him though. Like Billy says he'll get the chance to impress in the lesser comps and might get a run in the side if we cop some injuries.

Dimitri Payet's agent explains the situation with the West Ham's bid:

the clubs have agreed on a fee of £12M (not sure of details), and West Ham and Payet have agreed the terms of the contract of 5-6 years, but Payet is waiting as he doesn't want the transfer. Here:

    http://www.sports.fr/football/transferts/articles/om-payet-aimerait-prolonger-1268560/

He says that Payet wants to prolong his contract with Marseille, where he is happy with the club, the team and especially the manager. Marseille cannot match the salary that West Ham offers, but Payet would only sign for West Ham "as an extreme solution" if Marseille doesn't offer any improvement to his current contract. Marseille is not pushing him out, but if they don't offer anything, that's pretty much the same.

This reminds us of Valbuena's transfer to Moscow last season, with exception that Valbuena was looking for a transfer, whereas Payet definitely wants to stay. I have to sympathise with Bielsa, who sees another player sold against his will. I remember it was talked that he wants absolute control of club's affairs when he went to Marseille, but willy nilly, he's definitely the manager who has the least power on the club in all top clubs.

If he joins West Ham, talent wise he should be very exciting prospect for FPL, but I'm always a bit suspicious when a player moves to a new club against his will and in this case in particular. Will he be mentally there? He has a history of being a rather moody personality and is definitely not the most professional type there is.

Would the Payet move mean that Imbula would stay?

        Imo, yes.

If they sell him too, I think it means Bielsa won't stay. 😀

There seems to be discussion on this there, so maybe I'll copy my post there.
