Scout Scribbles – Gunners Stumble Again

A goal and assist apiece from Theo Walcott and Alexis Sanchez isn’t enough to stop Arsenal falling to defeat. Willian nets in Chelsea’s loss at Porto. Bournemouth’s Callum Wilson is sidelined for at least six months, whilst David Silva and Yaya Toure train ahead of City’s clash with Monchengladbach.

Gunners Suffer Setback

Arsenal’s hopes of progressing from their Champions League group were dealt a hammer blow following a 3-2 home defeat to Olympiakos – their second loss in as many Group F matches. Theo Walcott and Alexis Sanchez restored parity on two occasions – and grabbed the assists for each other’s strikes – but the Gunners were ultimately undone by some poor defending and a calamitous error from David Ospina. Nacho Monreal was rested, while Aaron Ramsey entered the fray at the hour mark. Petr Cech had a minor calf problem so was only fit enough for the bench, but the fit-again Francis Coquelin was named in the starting XI. Worryingly for Arsene Wenger, Laurent Koscielny suffered a hamstring problem and was withdrawn after 57 minutes.

The Scout Says: Walcott now has two goals in as many European starts to complement his couple of strikes in three league outings, underlining his burgeoning presence at the point of Arsenal’s attack. Pitched at 8.5 in the FPL, he serves as a more affordable route into the Gunners’ attack than Sanchez (11.1) ahead of a tough quintet of fixtures (MUN, wat, EVE, swa, tot). With Olivier Giroud suspended last night, Walcott has now started three of the last four in all competitions and those considering the latter will be hoping that Wenger doesn’t alternate the pair for the weekend clash against United. Sanchez’s capacity for explosive returns – as evidenced by his hat-trick last Gameweek – is sure to grant him a wave of new investors, given the paucity of strong captaincy options this term. Koscielny’s injury will be a concern for all Fantasy managers that have recruited from the North London outfit’s rearguard, given that Arsenal have failed to register a clean sheet with Per Mertesacker on board this term.

Blues Fall to Defeat

Chelsea suffered a 2-1 loss at the hands of a strong Porto outfit. Willian equalised in the dying embers of the first period with an accurate free-kick, but the Blues went behind seven minutes into the second half following some lackadaisical defending from a corner. Jose Mourinho opted to name Eden Hazard and Nemanja Matic on the substitutes bench for this encounter, handing starts to Ramires and Mikel. Hazard was then introduced at the 62-minute mark. At the back, Kurt Zouma and Gary Cahill were given the nod ahead of John Terry once again.

The Scout Says: Chelsea’s defensive travails were thrust into stark transparency once again, with Porto enjoying a wealth of shooting opportunities (22) against the English champions. The Blues’ defence shows no signs of improvement ahead of some kind upcoming fixtures, then, with Fantasy managers reluctant to invest in a backline that has conceded 14 times in seven league matches. Up next is a home clash against a Southampton side with five goals in the last two against United and Swansea, and with Sadio Mane, Dusan Tadic and Graziano Pelle in fine form, there’d be no real surprise if Mourinho’s defence was breached yet again.

Silva and Toure Train for City

David Silva, Yaya Toure and Pablo Zabaleta all trained with the Manchester City squad ahead of their Champions League clash against Borussia Monchengladbach on Wednesday. Conversely, Vincent Kompany and Eliaquim Mangala continue to nurse their respective injuries and were unable to take part.

The Scout Says: Silva’s return to action will come as a relief to all Fantasy managers who’ve invested in the Sky Blues’ squad. In the four matches that the Spaniard started prior to sustaining a calf injury, Manuel Pellegrini’s men amassed 10 unanswered goals. Without Silva’s creative spark, however, they’ve found the net on just three occasions, with Kevin de Bruyne proving the only real positive in Silva’s absence. Bacary Sagna’s 13% ownership will be nervously awaiting the team sheets on Saturday afternoon, with Zabaleta waiting in the wings for his first league start of the campaign. Sagna has been a solid performer at right-back this term, but the threat of rotation is heightened considerably in the wake of a 4-1 defeat to Spurs. City’s defence is a different proposition without their talismanic captain, Kompany: they shipped six goals in their last two outings, having recorded five successive clean sheets with the Belgian on the field. Nonetheless, a Martin Demichelis/Nicolas Otamendi centre-back partnership is more than capable of rebuffing the advances of Newcastle and Bournemouth (devoid of top scorer, Callum Wilson) in back-to-back home ties.

Cherries Confirm Wilson Absence

Callum Wilson has been ruled out for at least six months after scans revealed that he sustained a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament during the early exchanges of Bournemouth’s trip to Stoke City. Eddie Howe expressed sympathy towards Wilson’s setback while insisting that others now have to up their game to compensate for his absence:

”It’s very disappointing for Callum, after what has been an exceptional start to the season, but I am sure he will come back fitter and stronger. Callum is the type of character who won’t be fazed by such a setback, and I am sure he will turn this experience into a positive in the long run. As I have said many times before though, this kind of setback offers others the opportunity to step up to the plate, show everybody what they can do and make a real impact at this level.”

The Scout Says: Wilson’s injury has sparked a mass exodus across the Fantasy games. Initially priced at 5.5 in FPL, his five goals in six matches made him one of the most popular frontman around and over 290,000 managers have already cut ties with the Cherries frontman this week. This has persuaded many to turn to Leicester’s Jamie Vardy, who’s been picked up by over 270,000 new owners on the back of five goals in four. Wilson’s injury clearly spells trouble for Bournemouth’s attacking prospects, given that he accounted for over half (five) of their nine goals this campaign. It may well be that Glenn Murray is tasked with replacing Wilson up top by Eddie How, though it remains to be seen if he’ll have the same impact. Although Murray (5.6) bagged seven goals and three assists for Crystal Palace last term – despite being named in the starting XI on just nine occasions – he lacks Wilson’s pace and movement in the lone striker role, which were key components of the Cherries’ play in the final third.

Agbonlahor Close to Return

Tim Sherwood revealed that Gabriel Agbonlahor is recovering well from the calf injury that sidelined him for Aston Villa’s trip to Liverpool:

“Gabby is improving every day. We’re giving him some treatment every day and just assessing it and making sure it’s right. With the explosive power that Gabby has, the calf isn’t the greatest place to get injured. It’s where you push off and where your power comes from. We want to make sure that doesn’t turn into anything a lot more serious than what it is.”

The Scout Says: With three goals in his last two outings in all competitions, Rudy Gestede has earned himself a run of starts as the spearhead of the Villans’ attack. Agbonlahor, meanwhile, has managed just one assist in five league appearances so far and may struggle to remain ahead of the summer signing for the lone striker role. The latter could be shifted onto the flank in Sherwood’s favoured 4-2-3-1 set-up upon his return from the treatment room, thus vying with the likes of Jack Grealish and Scott Sinclair for a starting berth. Gestede catches the eye by virtue of a 5.8 price tag, yet the West Midlanders’ testing run through to Gameweek 14 (STO, che, SWA, tot, MCI, eve) serves to diminish their prospects on the offensive front.

United Concerns Over Trio

Louis van Gaal said that Michael Carrick, Ander Herrera and Antonio Valencia are all doubts for Manchester United’s Champions League tie against Wolfsburg on Wednesday, having sat out training on Tuesday with minor injuries:

“I think Michael Carrick shall not play tomorrow [Wednesday]. The other two [Herrera and Valencia] we have to wait and see. They have minor injuries so I don’t want to take any risks. Like we have done with Wayne Rooney, we will do the same for Michael Carrick or Ander Herrera. It’s the same because we have to play a full season and it’s better to withdraw players for one match than they play and get injured.”

The Scout Says: While Herrera has been marginalised by Wayne Rooney’s deployment at the number-ten berth, Carrick has been the mainstay in the double pivot during the Red Devils’ three-match winning streak, with Morgan Schneiderlin and Bastian Schweinsteiger rotating alongside him. Doubtless Van Gaal will be keen to retain that formula ahead of a challenging quartet of match-ups (ars, eve, MCI, cry). With Luke Shaw a long-term absentee and Marcos Rojo carrying a hamstring injury, Valencia was tasked with filling it at right-back against Sunderland, causing Matteo Darmian to shift over to the opposite flank. Any potential injury to Valencia would certainly ease fears of Darmian being rotated, after the Italian was hauled off at the break against Southampton in Gameweek 6. A spell on the sidelines for Valencia would see Darmian shift back over to the right, with Phil Jones’ potential return to the starting XI allowing Van Gaal to utilise the versatile Daley Blind as a left-back until the injuries ease again.

    Man City questions:

    * Will Yaya be fit for the weekend?
    * How will their back four line up, with Kompany out? Any risk of Sagna being dropped for Zaba?

I expect tonight's lineup will give us some clues.

Pretty sure yaya and silva will be back for the weekend. If sagna starts tonight it is very possible that zaba gets his first start against newcastle. Otamendi and demichelis was the worst cb pairing I've seen.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Aguero captaincy conundrum

Putting the armband on Aguero has cost me dear in recent weeks, while the likes of Payet, Mahez and many more regularly outscoring him. Even Jack Butland is outscoring him. End of days, indeed.

He looks once again the prime candidate for the armband this weekend, when the dire Newcastle team rock up to the Etihad. Am I and many others stupid for captaining him again?

Or will he do a Sanchez and turn his impressive stats (well in goal attempts at least) into actual goals.

A key problem with Aguero appears to be accuracy - with very few of his many shots hitting the target? Can he improve on that this weekend? If not, then the opposition is meaningless as he can't score if he can't be accurate.

Who is with me on this foolhardy mission to once again captain Aguero?

Who has seen sense and is looking elsewhere?

So you are not keen on Pelle or Sanchez then? All with high attempts but worse on target rate than Aguero. Attempts are completely relevant for strikers like Pelle - as he needs loads to finally hit the target.

Or Walcott? Aguero is only marginally behind his Attempts to on target ratio.

There are lots of attributes a striker needs. Accuracy of course is vital. But you can't ignore attempts as well.

Also look at Gomis's stats. He's been terrible as a Fantasy asset...but still posting impressive accuracy stats. His goal attempts are pretty good - but should be at Pelle level in order to do well. so once again, goal attempts very relevant again. 🙂

He has dropped like a stone, this week - meaning that he had a drop-off four weeks ago. Monk has reacted within two weeks, which impresses me, a lot.

Pellè has always been wasteful, but is now nearing his peak form.

I've very tempted by Pelle...he's doing exactly what he should be doing. Being wasteful but peppering the opposition goal so often that its paying off Fantasy wise in assists and goals.

Gomis needs more attempts and as you say is slumping. I'm very tempted to make that switch for a hit this week to avoid the inevitable price changes. Also looking at Chelsea's defence Pelle looks primed for points.

Everyone is captaining Aguero. Arsenal and United options cancel each other out. Pelle captainers will be slightly worried that Chelsea's quality will finally show through. Payet is a genuine option otherwise. So are Vardy/Mahrez.

Newcastle showed against Chelsea, United, Arsenal that they can play very well against the big teams.

Won't be surprised if they show City up in City's current defensive slump while Newcastle ride a small wave of confidence after the Chelsea performance.

The way NUFC is playing, they will surely going to concede and with Silva back there will be more feeds for Aguero.

Aguero has let me down too but always remember Form is termporary but Class is Permanent.

Aguero only needs one outing and he can become the top scorer of the league in a matter of 90 minutes.

Stay Calm and Give the Armband to Aguero !!

for a while, since you dont need the cash elsewhere...

you can have 2 strikers in the 6.0-6.5 range who score well, no need for all those millions to buy Costa, Rooney or Sturridge

When comparing stats I see a lot of tables showing us how many chances he's missed and how many shot were blocked etc. But isn't anyone bothered by the fact that, on average per appearance, he has less touches on the ball, less passes received and less dribbles this season compared to the last?

I'm definitely looking elsewhere... unless Agüero fills his boots tonight.

If not surely Payet, Mahrez and Vardy are far safer options for our armbands this week?

They have the high attempts to rival Agüero AND the good finishing he has lacked so far so should be far more confident. They are also playing Norwich and Sunderland who have looked about as atrocious as Newcastle defensively this season.

Also Payet, Mahrez or Vardy don't run the risk of a European hangover (City are in Germany today).

Well its on aguero but not confident, my gut says go with KDB and from what I've seen in these forums this week after the sanchez hat trick is people saying to trust the gut, with this in mind I don't want to miss out on a potentially sanchez turn around where we see aguero bag a hat trick and I miss out on it.

Knowing Wilson was going to drop Sunday/Monday I felt I had time to decide on a replacement because a 0.1m drop wouldn't have affected sale price. Now he's dropped again! Oops.

All that sell value made up through early transfers lost through Wilson, Ogbonna, Huth.

I wildcarded a couple of GWs ago to move to a 3-5-2 and stop the rot in terms of price drops. Was losing too much value at the start of the season.

Feeling the pressure now to revert to the familiar 3-4-3. But am convinced 3-5-2 is the way to go this season because of the options in midfield plus BPS friendliness of these options.

don't think he is premier league standard

He's never really done it in the prem league. But, at 4.8 he's a good bench warmer if you want to play 3-5-2.

What do you guys think about Walcott for game week 8 will he start or will he not since it's an away game and watford are decent definesively do you think it's good to double up on Arsenal I already have Sanchez and I'm 800k I really need to do something crazy to climb me up the ranks so perhaps Sanchez and Walcott? Already doubled up on Leicester with vardy and Riyad and that's working fantastically so far. The question is will Walcott be nailed now that he's scored in a few games?

Much better differential options. Walcott will never be nailed on all season. He could play the next three, or he could sit out them all. It seems too much of a risk, particularly when there are better options to help climb rankings. Aresenal fixtures also aren't good enough for doubling up on. Overall, it doesn't make any sense.

Which players are you looking to bring in next?

Mane Pelle Lukaku Barkley Delofue Coleman Dier Lamela are all on my watchlist what with their fixtures turning.

But how does one lose the likes of Mahrez, Payet, KDB, Sanchez etc.

    Difficult business this.

Folks, would appreciate some more thoughts on this please:

    Current front 7

    Sanchez Yaya Coutinho Ayew Mahrez
    ------------------Aguero Vardy-----------------

    0.7 banked

    A) Yaya > Payet
Allows funds for future Vardy > Pelle transfer. Riding on the Vardy form and price rises and do like the idea of Pelle as my 2nd striker long term. Started the season with Pelle in my team but ditched to make way for a 3-5-2 strategy. Team would eventually look like this in 2-3 GWs:

    Sanchez Payet Coutinho Ayew Mahrez
    -----------------Aguero Pelle-------------------

    B) Ayew > Payet
Just enough funds for this before any price changes but will be left with 0 in bank. Only possible route to Southampton attack is Coutinho > Tadic or Mane down the line. Team would eventually look like this in 2-3 GWs:

    Sanchez Yaya Tadic/Mane Payet Mahrez
    -----------------Aguero Vardy-------------------

This seems to be a divided opinion but how essential is it to have your 5th defender playing?

    Would you rather

    A) Davies and francis

    B) Alderwield and oxford?

    Double ups...

    Leicester
Whilst Mahrez is in such crazy form, and Vardy is the man of the moment, is it an easy choice? Ofcourse you double up on Leicester......oh is time to drop Mahrez, and go for the goals of Vardy rather than the assists of Mahrez?

    Arsenal
Walcott isnt nailed, but performing, even from the bench, Sanchez exploded and should keep his form going forward, would it be crazy to double up on Arsenal attack?

    West Ham
great fixtures, plus form for Payet and Sakho. are west ham good enough to take up two of our vitally important spots?

    West Brom
still decent fixtures, and proving to be very strong at the back, maybe Dawson and Myhill are worth a shot, or should we hedge our bets and only choose one? or none?

    City
Aguero still not hitting the net, KDB in form, Kolarov due a goal, Yaya and Silva on the way back from injury. is 3 the minimum number of City players for a sucessful team?

    Southampton
Pelle is very streaky, and has found some form, Tadic is looking very popular, and Bertrand is on the way back, do Southampton pose an option for doubling up?

Or is the whole idea out of whack, should we just choose the players we think will score points? or should we only choose 1 player from each team to minimise blanks?

      • 10 Years
      8 years, 6 months ago

City need a treble up, no other team is essential for double up but each that you mentioned look like good options.

Ultimately, I think you should just go where the points are regardless.

I tripled on Man City until this week, when I ditched Silva and will probably go down to one player now that they have heavily lost form. (need to choose between Kmp and Kol.)

I've doubled up on Southampton - I thought the Tadic/Pelle combo looked good in pre-season and so doubled up opening week. They've struggled until their recent form, and I've had no problems doubling up on those two again given their fixtures.

West Ham - I can see it, for sure. But I've just gone for Payet for now.

West Brom and Arsenal, nah. I have one from each - Myhill and Sanchez.

I do dabble in double ups, I picked up Vardy this week (mahrez) and plan on getting Dawson next week to join Myhill.

I'll keep Kun for the next two but if he fails to deliver he could be Sturridge or Costa soon, freeing up funds to bring in Mata when their next 3 bad fixtures have passed.
