This Much We Know – Gameweek 10

Harry Kane returns to form in resounding fashion as Spurs take advantage of Bournemouth’s defensive frailties. Mesut Ozil strengthens his case for inclusion as Arsene Wenger rotates up top again, Odion Ighalo continues to bring home the points, whilst Sunderland’s Steven Fletcher throws his hat into the ring as a budget alternative for our three-man frontlines. Here’s the lessons learned from this weekend’s action….

Kane has made a statement…
The Tottenham forward threw his hat in the ring as a contender for our three-man frontlines by racking up a hat-trick against Bournemouth’s leaky backline. Just like Alexis Sanchez, Kane finally backed up his underlying numbers after a frustrating first few months and with his confidence on the up, he now welcomes managerless Villa to the Lane. Granted, he has Arsenal, West Ham and Chelsea to follow but as we’ve seen last season, a Kane is fixture-proof when firing on all cylinders.

Rotation leaves the door open for Ozil…
Olivier Giroud was finally rewarded for his displays off the bench last Saturday as Theo Walcott’s run of six successive league starts came to an end. The Frenchman’s opener against Everton – his fourth in the last six Gameweeks, despite limited pitch time – vindicated his manager’s decision and with the Gunners level on points at the summit, Arsene Wenger’s rotation up top is clearly paying off. Mesut Ozil showed just why he’s becoming increasingly popular amongst Fantasy managers with a seventh assist of the season against the Toffees and with Walcott’s minutes once again a concern, the German’s security of starts will surely turn a few more heads.

Ighalo is the five-man midfield enabler…
The Watford budget frontman just keeps on delivering. Ighalo provided assists for both the Hornets’ goals in a surprise 2-0 win at Stoke as Quique Sanchez Flores’ side brought their hosts’ three-match winning streak to an end. Ighalo has played a part in 100% of Watford’s goals when on the pitch and has now risen to third in the FPL forward standings – at just 5.3, his acquisition looks a no-brainer for those determined to free up funds to splash the cash in midfield.

Big Sam needs to keep Fletcher fit…
It’s two goals and an assist from the Scot in the last three Gameweeks now as Sunderland’s fight for survival starts to finally pick up pace. Fletcher’s notorious fragility has limited his minutes in recent seasons but, as evidenced by his record between 2010/11 and 2012/13, where he served up double-figure goal hauls in three successive seasons, he’s more than capable of producing. If Sam Allardyce is to steer his new side to safety, the Wearsiders need to somehow keep Fletcher out of the treatment room.

Carroll could yet be a factor…
Emerging from the bench to grab a late winner at home to Chelsea, the Hammers frontman is edging ever-closer to a first start under Slaven Bilic. West Ham’s superb start to the season has seen them score 22 times – second only to City – yet first-choice forward Diafra Sakho has played a part in just four of those strikes, courtesy of three goals and an assist. Carroll already has a goal and assist in just 83 minutes off the bench but as he builds up his match sharpness following months on the sidelines, it surely won’t be too long before he’s handed a first XI opportunity.

Schlupp and Simpson are becoming Foxes options…
Leicester’s 5-2 home loss to Arsenal in Gameweek 7 has clearly had an impact on their defensive set-up. Since then, Claudio Ranieri has started Danny Simpson at right-back in each of the last three league matches and, at a price of 3.9, he offers us the cheapest starting defender in the FPL game. Meanwhile, the installation of Christian Fuchs on the opposite side of defence has allowed Jeffrey Schlupp an out of position berth on the left of midfield. One clean sheet in ten is hardly worthy investing in for their defensive potential alone but Simpson and Schlupp’s appeal is clearly on the rise.

The Cherries are the new whipping boys…
It’s five goals against in each of the last two Gameweeks as life in the top-flight suddenly gets grim for the Championship winners. With his side decimated by injuries to the likes of Callum Wilson, Max Gradel and Tommy Elphick, Eddie Howe is struggling to strike a balance as Bournemouth slip precariously nearer to the bottom three. A weekend trip to Southampton hands Sadio Mane and Graziano Pelle the chance to wreak havoc and with Swansea, Everton, Chelsea and United also in the next six, Howe has a task on his hands to keep his side out of the drop zone.

The Capital One Cup has its uses….
As many as nine players are facing one-match bans this week after an eventful round of fixtures. Luckily for all but two of those players (Newcastle pair Jack Colback and Fabricio Coloccini), those suspensions will be served in the midweek cup clashes – not only will the likes of Sadio Mane be available for the home clash with Bournemouth on Sunday, he’s be free to put his feet up in midweek when Southampton host Villa at St Mary’s. For as much as the extra schedule can wreak havoc with rest and rotation, sometimes the domestic cups can bail out our players and serve as a buffer for those pesky cards accumulated during league action.

Milner could kick on under Klopp….
The summer signing from City seems to have adapted immediately to Jurgen Klopp’s “Gegenpressing” tactic. Whilst Philippe Coutinho struggled to spark his side into life, Milner created five chances against Southampton and bagged an assist for Christian Benteke’s opener – he’s now served up points in three of the last four and is the Reds’ joint-top scorer in FPL. Milner’s dynamic displays look tailor-made for Klopp’s approach and his early performances suggest he’ll be one of the main beneficiaries of the post-Brendan Rodgers era.

Jagielka’s absence could force a Toffees reassessment…
The Everton centre-half was ruled out for around eight weeks earlier today after sustaining a knee injury in the weekend loss at Arsenal. The Jagielka news comes at a time when Roberto Martinez’ men are set to embark on a superb run of fixtures, with new boy Ramiro Funes Mori set to fill the space vacated alongside John Stones. Given that Jagielka sits amongst the top three defenders for CBI (Clearances, Blocks and Interceptions) this season, though, it remains to be seen just how much his loss will diminish their defensive appeal.

No chance in hell I'm selling Myhill

this is a Pulis defence ffs, they can keep cleanies v anyone, and even if they don't, Myhill will get a ton of saves and absolutely hoovers up BAPs

a defender is perhaps a different matter

Yeah Myhill has been a beast. When he's not keeping a CS, he racks up the saves, and when he does keep a CS, he's always in the baps. Probably worth keeping if you have other priorities.

Bookmark this: WBA won't keep a single CS in their next 6, and people will wonder why they held onto their defs for this run.

I am on wc and am still keeping Myhill

if they don't keep a CS he will still get saves, and we have seen that some keepers can make in save points almost as much as they'd get from a CS

I am pairing him with Henessey to give myself the option to rotate if I want

I'll only want Myhill back GW17 so may as well keep

possibly but doesn't mean he'll walk straight back into the team given how well Myhill has been playing

Depends if you have a good bench or not. I'm probably making a defensive transfer this GW, but don't see the point in shipping Dawson or Evans for Moreno instead of useless Francis just to save 0.5m

Really don't know what i'm missing tbh. Fair enough if you have Myhill, or are just gonna bench your sole WBA def for this run. But you have 2? Surely you must have a load of £ from the Aguero injury to invest in the likes of United, Saints and Everton.

General point: it's not like they've massivly risen in price that you'll struggle to fit them back when the tough run ends.

Yes, they've kept cs's in the past vs United, Chelsea and Pool. Doesn't mean it's bound to happen again, they look more vulnerable vs the better attacking sides this year to me.

I'm pleased with the cleansheets they've provided so far, but perfectly happy to sell now and get again when the fixtures ease. Don't know why people feel so attached to their backline that they dare not sell them at any cost.

              A) people don't like to waste transfers on defenders and with wba history a defender off your bench from them will have a chance of a cs in any fixture.

              B) gks from weaker teams that get a cs in a tough fixture are killing it in the points stakes with a few having gained double figure points hauls now. It is almost making it not worth rotating gks now as you obviously can't predict these unexpected cs (some of which could come for wba over the next 6).

I don't rule out transferring Dawson or Evans out, I just can't see the logic this GW in dumping one of them over Francis. I'd rather have a WBA defender for those tough fixtures than Francis in any fixture and it saves me a transfer later if I want my triple up back

This, 100% - had Myhill last season too and he absolutely racked up the points toward the end of the season in, what on the surface of it looked unfavourable fixtures. Also have Evans and will bench him a little over coming weeks, especially as just ungraded Targett to VVD but Myhill is a keeper...

This is a great hot topic.

I doubled up weeks ago with Myhill and Evans. I think I should probably ship at least one. Now:

Evans is somewhat of an injury liability, so he might seem the obvious pick. However, I have Gomes as my other keeper whose fixtures are also not great. Evans is much easier to simply keep on the bench. Selling Myhill would also get me a minor profit. But he has been so good to me with the saves and baps.

I just don't kniw what to do 🙁

You're probably right that they're not going to get a CS in the next 6 gw's. Having said that, I'm not selling Evans. I don't mind having him on my bench for these gw's considering his price and I have much more pressing issues.

I think out of their next 6 there could be a CS or two in it for them.

I have Dawson and I won't kick him out because

      A. He'd be back in my team in 6 weeks time anyway.

      B. He has an attacking threat.

      C. Pulis loves to park the bus against bigger teams.

I don't know if it is the hair, but I've been just telling my friend the same, wba won't keep a single cs in the next 6 so why keep a 5m defender on bench when you can replace him with a heavy hitter or a 4.5m defender? I say sell all the way, Tony pulis is up in the league TABLE and he won't keep that place, period.

Is Vardy the striker to keep all season?

With Kane hitting form, the similarly priced Bony, Lukaku and Pelle having great fixtures and good underlying stats and the Martial hype, something has to give.

Some scouts have sold or are suggesting selling Vardy. To me this seems like folly, of all the strikers available in the game at the moment I would argue he is best candidate to keep all season. Yes his fixture for GW11 is tricky (West Brom away) but talk of his returns being unsustainable in the long term don't seem to be backed up by the stats.

Comparing Vardy's shots per game to shots on target per game ratio it's bang on the trend line, so he's not shooting more accurately than one would expect for a striker. What's more he averages more shots on target per game than any other player in the league this season.

Comparing his shots on target per game to goals per game ratio it's bang on the trend line, so he has scored the amount of goals you would expect of a striker from his shots on target so far this season. Unsurprisingly he averages more goals per game than any other player in the league this season.

Considering Vardy costs just £7.1m and many managers brought him in for £0.5m-£1m less he offers serious value and arguably most managers could even afford to leave him on the bench for the odd tricky fixture and play a fifth midfielder or fourth defender. For me he is the one striker no manager should consider selling in the near future.

Be insane to sell an in form striker, especially at his price point.

If like me - you got him in early.. Yes i could sell him for 6.7m - but i'd have to upgrade him as nobody else in that price range brings the same possible return... Then if i want to go back later as his form continues, he'll end up being 7.5m or so.

He's a great cheap striker to have, to compliment two of Pelle, Lukaku, Bony, Aguero etc.

I assume this is at least, partly motivated by me

I was not advocating it, and certainly not if you got on early. I was merely trying to generate some debate

if Leicester maintain their rates then he'll still do well, it's whether you're prepared to gamble that others will start to show.

That's the gamble I'm prepared to take. if I'm wrong, Vardy is still cheaper, easy downgrade

Vardy is scoring too many goals for his shots on target compared to long-term trends, but that doesn't mean he is a bad pick.

Do you mean compared to his personal previous goal conversion rate or compared to the general one?

If you look at this graph below for this season and you assume a general conversion rate as a regression of those points he's pretty close to that. Even if he's 1 or 2 goals ahead of it his shots on target per game is higher than any other player so, although he might be slightly over performing, he's likely to be the highest scoring player in the league this season.

True, but you are turning to the extremes here. Vardy could maintain this rate, but very few do. Using Yaya Toure as an example is an admission Vardy is operating away from the trend line.

In the film Citizen Kane, "Rosebud" was the mysterious word that he uttered on his deathbed. It turned out to be the name of his boyhood sled.

So it really ought to be Harry Kane on the sleigh, especially if he ever joins City. 🙂

I have 2 FT's, but I don't know what to do. Any advice would be hugely appreciated.

    This is my team:
    Myhill, Butland
    Bellerin, Cédric, Moreno, Dawson, Souaré
    Alexis, Payet, KDB, Ayew, Mané
    Vardy, Ighalo, Pellé.

Options I consider: Howard, Galloway, Simpson, Kolarov, Barkley, Özil, Eriksen, Lukaku and Kane.

Nothing too obvious but you don't want to waste a transfer. It's a little bit template (for here anyway). Try looking for somebody a little different.

Pelle -> Kane might be a good shout

      1. hannesdela
        • 12 Years
        8 years, 6 months ago

Yes I first thought about getting Kane in after his hattrick heroics and now a home game against Villa to come, but Pellé has a home game against the awful Bournemouth.

That makes it very hard to take him out. In his next 5, he also has Sunderland, Stoke and Villa whereas Kane has Arsenal, West Ham, Chelsea and West Brom.

Maybe I should just change something in my defence? It seems to hard to take any of my midfielders or forwards out.

That had crossed my mind, as had Lukaku my worry is how do you go about getting Aguero back

I think you have to leave the pelle route to aguero open, which could rule out a bony move unless you want to commit to two transfers in the near future by getting bony in and then downgrading him later to get aguero for pelle.
only other way I can see if you want bony for now is to plan him to aguero and accept either mane or payet have to go.
you could maybe scramble the cash out of your defence if you still have WC

Yeah it's a strange one because I have money tied up in Ighalo all be it only .2 but that could be vital when trying to bring Aguero back as I might need to buy him back. Cheers for your input JTD

Maybe worry about that when the time comes? It's still a few game weeks out, and you can do a 3 or even a 4 way trade (-8) to reconfigure, if need be. Or, then you plan now and be judicious, but potentially miss out on a near-term opportunity. Depends on your risk profile.

I did Costa to Bony on Saturday but not sure he was the right choice. Lukaku may be a better option.

2 FTs this week. Want to get Kane in, but keep West Ham coverage.

    Sakho -> Kane
    Ayew or Mata -> Payet

Swansea have good fixtures coming up.

Saves you a transfer down the line

You would probably want to make that move in 2 weeks so getting Lukaku now saves a transfer down the line, also gives you more flexibility who you lose for Aguero. That being said Bony has arguably the better fixtures for the next 2 weeks.

Is 343 back in favour? Many went for 352 due to the number of midfielders performing well earlier in the season.

Especially when Kun is back and now that Vardy has cemented himself in our teams, we would want more slots up front.
