Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Gameweek 26 – Sunday

Harry Kane and Christian Eriksen continue their fine form by grabbing a goal apiece as Spurs emerge victorious at the Etihad. Danny Welbeck and Theo Walcott climb off the bench to fire Arsenal to victory over Leicester. Jamie Vardy notches a spot-kick as the Foxes taste defeat for the third time this term, whilst Philippe Coutinho provides three assists as Liverpool thrash basement-dwellers Villa.

Welbeck wins it for Gunners

Arsenal moved to within two points of the summit by virtue of Danny Welbeck’s last-gasp winner. Theo Walcott also emerged from the bench and grabbed a goal, placing further pressure on Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s starting berth as competition in the final third intensifies. Although Alexis Sanchez looks nailed-on his 14% ownership will be concerned by a nine-match barren streak.

To the satisfaction of Mesut Ozil’s 50% ownership, his assist in the dying embers helped the German earn maximum bonus points – that’s 18 points in the last two Gameweeks for the playmaker, who continues to look the one reliable Arsenal attacker. Olivier Giroud turned provider for the opening goal, complementing the assist he served up last time out, though he has now scored in just one of his last nine league appearances ahead of the trip to United. With Welbeck and Walcott amongst the goals, the Frenchman’s security of starts could soon be in question.

On the defensive front, Per Mertesacker was afforded his first start since Gameweek 22, given that Gabriel suffered a hamstring knock in training. Meanwhile, Laurent Koscielny was replaced at the half with a dead leg, rendering him a minor doubt for Arsenal’s home tie against Hull City in the FA Cup.

Vardy strike not enough for Foxes

Jamie Vardy spot-kick opener took his tally to four goals in as many outings and with guaranteed fixtures in Gameweek 27 and 30 (due to the Foxes’ FA Cup exit), he’s already been snapped up by 50,000 FPL managers as many part company with Romelu Lukaku. Vardy has already risen in price overnight and with penalty duties now boosting his appeal, the bandwagon looks set to pick up pace over the new few days.

Riyad Mahrez’ 65% of FPL owners were left frustrated with a one-point haul after the Algerian was replaced before the hour-mark due to Danny Simpson’s 54th-minute dismissal. Simpson now misses the upcoming home encounter against Norwich – in a Gameweek where four teams are without a fixture, his 8% owners may decide to part company and opt for one of Robert Huth or Christian Fuchs as the fixtures (NOR, WBA, wat, NEW) turn kind for the league leaders.

Kane nets again

Tottenham Hotspur injected their title bid with fresh impetus following a 2-1 win at Manchester City. Harry Kane profited from a dubious penalty to fire the visitors ahead in the 53rd minute, with Danny Rose picking up the assist. The 10.1-priced striker now lays claim to five goals in as many starts, augmenting his captaincy prospects prior to a favourable home tie against Swansea City.

Christian Eriksen perpetuated his fine form (three goals and assist in five) with his fifth goal of the campaign. Dele Alli remains the prime route into Spurs’ midfield because of his recent productivity (two goals and three assists in four) and price tag (6.0), yet his Danish counterpart serves as an intriguing differential. Elsewhere, Erik Lamela capped off an impressive substitute outing with his fourth assist of the term.

Rare blank from Aguero

Manchester City’s hopes of claiming the Premier League crown hang in the balance following successive defeats to fellow title challengers. Although David Silva was passed fit for this fixture, Sergio Aguero suffered from a lack of quality service and lacked a clinical touch when chances did arise – he failed to seriously trouble Hugo Lloris with any of his five attempts. Nonetheless, the majority of his 31% ownership will be unwilling to consider a sale before the Sky Blues’ imminent blank, considering that he racked up six goals in four starts prior to facing the league’s tightest defence.

With regards to Man City’s Fantasy output, Kelechi Iheanacho restored parity for the hosts during his second-half cameo, bolstering his case for a start when they travel to Liverpool in Gameweek 28. The Nigerian marksman was teed up by Gael Clichy, who has now started three of the last four Gameweeks ahead of Aleksandar Kolarov at left-back. City had conceded just once in the eight league matches that Vincent Kompany had started prior to yesterday’s loss and with the Belgian lasting 90 minutes, Manuel Pellegrini will be hoping his side can address a run that’s seen them concede at least twice in three of the last four Gameweeks.

Reds run riot at sorry Villa

Daniel Sturridge and Philippe Coutinho returned to league action as Liverpool humiliated Aston Villa in a 6-0 thrashing. Sturridge found the net in his first start since Gameweek 8, while Coutinho showcased his creative flair with a trio of assists.

We’re intrigued by the differential potential of both players, yet the Reds’ blank in Gameweek 27 and Manchester City’s visit in Gameweek 28 cools our interest for the time being. Moreover, Liverpool’s home match-up against Chelsea in Gameweek 30 will have to be rescheduled if the Blues get the better of Man City in the FA Cup next weekend.

Divock Origi, James Milner, Emre Can, Nathaniel Clyne and Kolo Toure also graced the scoresheet, while Jordan Henderson and Roberto Firmino earned assists. Speaking of the latter, the average-position map for this match shows that the Brazilian midfielder took up a central position behind lone striker Sturridge as Klopp rolled out a 4-2-3-1. Given that Firmino had scored or assisted seven of Liverpool’s previous 11 goals as a “false nine”, his owners will be hoping that yesterday’s relatively minimal output isn’t a sign of things to come with Coutinho and Sturridge back in the fold.

Those Everton shooting numbers are huge: 33 shots for 0 goals!!! Opta ended up listing them a "mere" 16 shots inside the box, so they took 17 of them outside the box. Barkley alone contributed for almost half of those with 7 shots from outside of the box. Is he so good a shooter that he should continue taking those shots at that rate?

    Tl;dr: No he isn't.

Detail: His career conversion rate from outside of the box is bang average 3,5%, this season's 3,9% well within the average area.

How about those great long shot goals then? Well, at his shooting rate he's always going to score once a while, keeping up an image that he's got a great shot in him. He's a sort of Everton's Gerrard: a bang average shooter who just shoots so much that even at his rate he's going to score a lot. Gerrard's long shot conversion rate is 3.6%, a bang average rate boosted by his long time decent free kick conversion rate - take them off, and you'll have a bad shooter who wastes an attack after attack by taking desperate shots (doesn't apply to Barkley who lacks the good free kick stats).

Ergo: Martinez should tell Barkley not to shoot from distance. He's effectively wasting a lot of their attacks that could turn into good chances. On a side note, he also should _always_ play Deulofeu.

No doubt about that. I'm not sure he ever had found it anyway. Just noting that Barkley's shooting is costing to Everton. Of course Barkley is not the only one. That team is "blessed" with midfielders who have no special talent for the long shots but like to try it a lot, way too much.

Good stats, none of that is in any way surprising though - Barkley is talented but has always been wasteful end-product wise.

Out of interest, which Premier League players rank the highest for long shot conversion?

I don't know, didn't take a look at the all league stats, but 3%-4% is the long term average in the top leagues.

Yaya has finished from distance at a high rate consistently over many seasons, so if I had to guess, I might pick him. Or Payet, who is another one who consistently finishes above his xG. This particular season, Mahrez has a finished so greatly that he might well also lead the outside the box shot conversion table. He or Vardy. But will they be able to keep even over average rates up? Time will tell, I have my doubts. But these are just guesses.

Fair enough, too lazy to look myself, just wondered if you had the stats to hand. Haven't Leicester only scored once or twice from outside the box all season? Pretty sure Mahrez and Vardy won't figure high up in any long range conversion tables.

Yeah, I just recall some Vardy long shot from some time ago, so thought that could be a chance that I would not traditionally think of. Basically, I'd think it _should_ be Yaya, Payet or somebody like that. But probably isn't, because for one season, there's almost surely somebody who has fluked some 7-8%+ rate. Anyway, I take a fast look at this.

So, Origi has 100% conversion from his 2 shots from outside the box.

Augero's 25% conversion from outside of the penalty area is the best amongst players with at least 10 attempts.

Lennon has been one of Evertons best players in recent weeks no reason to drop him. Calling Gerrard a bad shooter makes this post look so hilarious that I'm not even sure if my sarcasm radar is broken.

It may come as a shock, but when you look at long shot stats Gerrard comes up as a particularly wasteful shooter. And the sample size is big, for sure.

Those who have the ability to score from range usually have the freedom to try their luck more because it gives the defense something more to think about. Stats are often misleading and this is a good example. I do agree that Barkley should tone the shooting frequency down a bit but his biggest problem for me is dwelling on the ball as it really takes the tempo out of most of their attacks.

Stats really are not misleading in this case. Rather they tell that Gerrard isn't, after all, as good a shooter as he and his managers have thought. His non-FK conversion rate from outside the box is deplorably low. Even his total NP conversion rate is rather awful. It's a bit same with his long range passing: most of the time he just wasted possession, but we like to think he was good at it because of the few times it came out well, when truly, absolutely any professional player will succeed time to time if he tries often enough. It's quite the same also as with Balotelli's shooting: he's a bang average shooter, but just tries so much that he gets those highlight reel goals. The fact remains that their decisions (to take a chance from distance) cause more problems to their own team than to the opponent.

Of course he doesn't take 7 shots outside the box every game. He also doesn't take 9 shots every game. Yes, the rate is also better than 2/9 from inside the box, in fact it has been around 3/8 this season. Still, he takes way too much shots from distance while being a very average shooter.

Fairly happy with this lot for next week - used 1 of my transfers on Lukaku > Vardy already.

Got another to burn - any ideas? Nyom > Fuchs?

    Lloris (Hennesey)

    Wollscheid - Daniels - Nyom ( Bertrand - Bellerin )

    Sanchez - Payet - Mahrez - Alli - Arnie

    Vardy - Kane ( Kun )

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

The no - Aguero experiment revisited

Given there’s no FPL matches this weekend and no Scoutcast this week I thought I’d revisit Mark’s no Aguero policy. I wondered what would have happened if the experiment had carried on and what we can learn from it, especially as Aguero now faces a blank, then a visit to Liverpool.

Also think this is pertinent as some brave souls in GWK 26 swapped him out for Costa – as we shall see that was a very good move indeed. Hats off to them.

Could the experiment show us that for the next GWK when Aguero misses a game and beyond there are options out there?

Here are those that beat Aguero over the last three. Some also offer great options for the weeks ahead.

    Last Three GWK form

Looking at the last three weeks where Aguero (when was brought in by Mark) scored a total of 13 points.

So over that three GWKS were there better options?

    There certainly were.

    Jamie Vardy (22pts)

Top of the pile for a striker berth was Jamie Vardy. Arguably he has shown over the last three weeks what a quality striker he is but he also looks to be the best captaincy option in GWK 27 and a great option for weeks to come. Is he now the new Aguero that teams can ill afford to do without?

    Harry Kane (21pts)

He is in most teams anyway. But if you didn’t own him over the last three weeks he would have been a great alternative to draft in. What’s more he plays in GWK 27.

    Anthony Martial (21pts)

Who’d have thought it? The joint second best striker over the last three weeks is Anthony Martial. Hats off to anyone who drafted him in. He also has a GWK 27 fixture – could his fine form carry on?

    Diego Costa (19pts)

Hats off to those who made the move from Aguero to Costa early. He repaid them with a goal and an assist to make him the third best striker in FPL over the last three weeks. With Chelsea’s current form he looks a great alternative to the Argentine.

    Wayne Rooney (16pt)

ManU may be inconsistent but Rooney is proving that he remains an FPL legend and the fourth best striker in FPL over the last three.

    Salomon Rondon (16pt)

Another surprise name that has out gunned Aguero in the last three weeks. Not sure anyone would have been brave enough to pick him over Aguero in that time – but if you were that one manager well done to you.

Honourable mention – one other player pipped Aguero to the points over the last three. Troy Deeney – who has a great GWK 27 fixture btw - got 15 points and looks the new go to man in the Watford attack. What now for Ighalo owners?

What makes the above worse is it was Vardy he was saying that could keep pace with Aguero, and he's gone and been the best of the bunch and looks likely to continue.

Rather unlucky but can't blame him for the move.

it can work short term but going without him long term will always come back to get you!

If you sort it by FPL form (last 5 weeks currently) you get a very different story:

      i Agüero 8.2
      i Kane 7.2
      i Costa 6.8
      i Vardy 6.6
      i Rooney 5.4

Or even better get Aguero in for the first two GWKS of that run and then swap to one of those others. In part this is what some did in GWK 26 with Aguero to Costa. It shows that fixtures do count alot and Man City did have a tough game against Spurs especially.

To be fair I think its just more of the rub of the green fitting our narrative. His ICT Threat scores have been just as high as over over the last 3 weeks and he's sailing well clear on my Hot Shots table over the last 4 weeks by pretty much every metric. If he puts any of his 5 shots on target against Tottenham I don't think we're having this conversation.

This is my table for reference: http://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/public-stats-tables/view/12374/

I maintain though that v Spurs there were better options in GWK 26. Also better options in GWK 25... I'm as dull as ditchwater but even I didnt even flinch about captaining other players GWK 25 and 26.

There is always luck but Aguero was not the best option going into GWK 25 and 26...many said that before those gameweeks and it shows by their captaincy decisions as well.

Oh yeah, completely I captained Sanchez and Firmino for a net gain of a point over Aguero. Its not the same Payet or Costa sunshine story but it worked as captaincy picks. The thing is I still wouldn't dare go without him in my squad while he's fit.

I think what this shows is that Mark was right to bring this up as a discussion point and I think its something that all (especially dullard managers like me) can learn from. Of the above I think Kane, Vardy and Costa were and remain viable alternatives to Aguero.

I wonder if a frontline of Vardy Kane and Costa could keep pace with the more template frontline of Aguero Kane and Vardy over the next three to four fixtures? On current evidence it looks like they could.

There are five penalty taking centre forwards up there (Kane, Lukaku, Kun, Vardy, Deeney). Six if you include Rooney.

Form, injuries and FPL stats show that there is no reason to stick with this obsession over Kun. Any permutation of those other four would beat a team that has Kun in, despite the odd explosive points haul.

            No.

But is it really worth getting rid now only to want him back for AVL in GW29 (assuming he has a game GW30)?

Not at all, especially when we are likely to have a large amount of blanks in GW30 so transfers are as precious as ever.

I'm seriously considerin swapping Aguero out for two gwks (I have enough in the bank not to worry about getting him back GWK 29).

With ARS and WAT - Rooney looks a great option

With sou nor - Costa looks a great option for GWK 28 but GWK 27 looks tricky

Vardy and Kane obviously look great alternatives too if you don't own them.

I can though. I have plenty for GWK 27. I have three Leicester, a southampton and a Stoke player in place for GWK 30. Alot will depend on which teams miss GWK 30...but with a wildcard for the next double all I have to navigate is GWK 30 in terms of transfers currently. If I have a good XI for GWK 30 - which is still four transfers away for me - then why not spend a transfer getting Rooney or Costa in for two weeks then switch to Aguero for Villa?

If I have loads out for GWK 30 obviously I don't have this luxury.

But what if Kun have a blank GW 30? Will you be getting him then for GW 29? There are a lot of games before GW 30, FA cup, europe and there will be injuries and cards so i think transfers are preciuous. Also, wouldn't be a surprise if Kun destroys Liverpool, maybe Klopp will field a strong team for europa games and they will be a bit tired.

Not when he has Villa at home GW29.

Also think he could rip Liverpool apart GW28 if they still have Sakho and Toure at the back.

Long term I think Costa is the one who can make this possible. The Norwich game is very tempting.

But then, Aguero has Villa at home a week later than that. And Kun could easily match Costa in that game away to Pool. So right now I'd say it's best to wait and see.

I took out Aguero for Costa.

Now considering taking out Kane for Vardy (instead of taking out Lukaku).

Excluding the blank I think Lukaku has better short term fixtures.

Having said that I will reserve judgement till after the fa cup games.

If I still had Aguero I would keep him as long as he didn't blank in GW30. Think he will punish Liverpool and Villa!

i very nearly sold kane to get him! phew, would have been fuming as at the time kane was the one everyone said to sell instead of lukaku.

this kind of highlights a point though which paul the psychic octopus mentions. kane has had a couple of pens so i look genius for keeping. if those 2 pens went to aguero instead it would have been a marvellous decision. or if lukaku was on the pitch for barkley-gate. such fine lines with A) top strikers and B) penalty takers. a perfectly logical move can make you a hero one week or a fool the next

I've made my GW27 transfer - Aguero for Vardy. I'll probably swap Vardy for Aguero in GW29 for the upcoming double gameweek if it's soon; if not, I'll think again.

Reading this is making me more frustrated I didn't do the Costa move but: Vardy had 1 assist in five games GW18-22, already own Kane etc. The three games before the analysis Aguero was blowing everyone else out of the water. But I'm still gutted.

Been using the FTs to sort out defence issues rather than Aguero to Costa etc.

Using a FT to take Aguero out is way down on my list.

    Toby / Cresswell / Simspon** / Zouma** / Moreno**
    Sanchez / Ozil / Payet / Alli / Firmino**

Determine not to take a hit for the coming gw. What move would you do here guys? Was originally planning on Firmino > Mahrez until Zouma and Simpson kinda mess with the plan. Still got AOA though.

Since Ivan hasnt produced last two GW, i guess its ok to consider shipping him out to VvD.
Also, Bellerin is a contender to be shipped.

      Ivanovic I would sell

Bellerin I would keep, I expect Arsenal to win the the league and if I'm right that will involve keeping a fair few clean sheets from now until the end of the season. Bellerin is also nailed on and has a small chance of assists and baps

Might have an affect on them given it was their rivals and the nature of it but they lost to Liverpool and bounced back in fairly quick time.

They couldn't have a better fixture to get back into it. Be interesting to see what happens.

Yep, and they're all going on holiday (separately) now, which couldn't really come at a better time. They'll have to just regroup and move on, and they seem to have a very good mentality, nothing has really fazed them yet.

Yeah. It'll be tough - don't think anyone is denying that.

You always hear pundits and pros talk about "knowing how to win a title". The pressure will start building on them the less fixtures there are to go. Any slip up will be jumped on by the media.

I'd like to see them do it, I think they can do it, but it's way to close to tell at the moment. As you say below - all the current top 4 are in with a chance. Certainly wouldn't write City off yet.

City are capable of going on a blistering run IF they hit form, but they look miles off it at the moment and, perhaps most tellingly, they don't look particularly bothered. You have to wonder what effect the Guardiola announcement has had.

I'm going to lose all faith if City win it. Leicester would obviously be the biggest fairytale, but in any normal season, Spurs or even Arsenal winning it would be astonishing. If City win it, it will feel like normal order has been restored very quickly.

The difference this season is that you don't imagine any of the top 4 to hit an electric, unbeatable run - I fully expect a couple of slips from them all. So Leicester may be able to lose a couple and still maintain a lead (I hope at least).

Chelsea received a little help against PSG. The statistically best RB of the season in Europe, Ivory Coast international Serge Aurier, just played himself offside for indefinite time by calling his coach a faggot and insulting half of his team mates too in a live video podcast on Periscope.

    http://www.getfootballnewsfrance.com/2016/serge-aurier-embroiled-in-seismic-periscope-scandal/

He's suspended by the club for at least a week, so during the first Chelsea match, but his team mates seem to be unwilling to let him return in the squad at all, so he may miss the rest of the season completely.

Hazard is going to play against either Marquinhos or Van der Wiel, the latter not being known for his defensive reliability, so Hazard should have more than fair chances to do damage against PSG. If playing CL fantasy or betting on that match, I might just take a punt on Hazard scoring a goal anytime. If he, however, plays against Marquinhos, then it's much less likely. In that case, the lack of Aurier would show much more attack wise.

Another surprise tip could be putting money on Juve beating Bayern, or at least scoring a header. Bayern has exactly 0 CB's fit to play against Juve now, and certainly Allegri will be smart enough to try to exploit that situation: Morata will be a real aerial threat upfront and in set pieces, there may be little chances for Bayern to defend against all those big Juve defenders, and then they also have to mark Khedira, Pogba and Morata. Juve is not just a big side, something that Bayern would definitely demolish: I'd bet it is a technically and tactically good enough side to beat Bayern if they can _also_ take as great a physical advantage as they are now offered.

If it's Pedro on left as against Newcastle, then maybe put a bet on Pedro. Anyway, if Marquinhos starts, as he's very defensive and basically a CB, then there is no extra expectation for goals from the left.

I'd say PSG are huge favorites for the game against Chelsea regardless of their rightback. They are just a much better team with the better players. Although on current form Chelsea might have a slight chance as PSG have looked a bit off but maybe that is just down to a lack of motivation as they are leading the league by so many points.

On the Juve case I think there is a good chance they win the home game as they are really strong there and rarely lose. Morata isn't really that much of an aerial threat if Mandzukic plays then it's a different case. Morata likes to run behind and scores most of his goals with his feet. It's also worth pointing out that Juve like play their crosses along the ground if Mandzukic isn't playing. Dybala has a great delivery though so set piece goal from a defender is possible.

      1. Camp No No
        • 10 Years

Of course PSG are huge favourites, and I didn't claim anything opposite. All I said was that if VDW plays, Hazard will likely torment him and there's a fair chance of a goal from that region.

As to Juve - Bayern, I don't think you quite understood this point: Bayern has no CB's fit to play. There will likely be something like Alaba-Kimmich in central defence. If Allegri doesn't make them play high crosses there, then he either can't see the opportunity or can't adjust his tactics to take it. But knowing him, he is exactly the kind of manager who is apt to take these chances and will adjust his tactics. Morata is ~190cm tall and has scored one sixth of his goals with head. He certainly is an aerial threat to use against a 176cm tall Kimmich.

Toby (SWA) / Cresswell (SUN) / Wolly (AVL)
Sanchez (mun) / Ozil (mun) / Alli (SWA) / Mahrez (NOR) / Payet (SUN)
    Kane (SWA) / Vardy (NOR)

    Myhill / Bellerin / Simpson* / Aguero*

    0FT, 0ITB.

You're absolutely fine with that team. Fixtures are good. If you get another injury this weekend you'll cope

Stoke players - only ones worth having are their defenders (IF Shawcross is Back)... Otherwise, I'd not bother with Arnie.

Save that Midfield spot for the likes of Siggy (IF Swans plays GW30)

        or
Naaah you disagree and think a Stoke Midfeilder is worth having?

Good option also - much better than Arnie. Especially from around the GW28 onwards

Just seen Doos's 'They're Due' table. He's on there. Could be a good little punt

Benched Vardy for Mahrez last week and Mahrez for Vardy this week. I may have had an awful season in every other way, but I sure do know Leicester. Except for Huth, don't mention Huth.

So saving my FT last week and putting the C on Payet this week (Thanks Doos) was a great move.

Now I have 2FT and the boring moves are to bring in Vardy and Mahrez.

It's a must this week no?

You can probably wait unless they're rising?

Leicester been given a week off so less chance of injuries
