Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers use a variety of different metrics to determine their captaincy choices such as class, form, fixtures, underlying statistics, ownership % and positional changes.

For those who have held onto their Triple Captain chips in anticipation of the upcoming double Gameweeks, this choice is even more critical given the range of possible outcomes.  A weekend goalscorer becoming a midweek hat-trick hero as his club fights a relegation battle can ensure the breaking of a century in style, while a captaincy differential missing one penalty kick, while giving away another to a teammate can ruin a month’s worth of planning.  These are not just dream scenarios, as those of us who have captained Christian Benteke and Steven Gerrard in previous seasons can attest.

Methodology

By looking at the attacking returns from Gameweek 21, since the last international break, we can get a sense of the players who have been consistent, explosive, underperforming, or a combination thereof. Those who have played in fewer matches are noted in the tables below with their appearances in brackets. Harry Kane and Riyad Mahrez are used in these tables as the baseline for comparison as the in-form attackers without a double Gameweek. This is so that Fantasy managers can judge triple captaincy candidates against these peak performers.

The numbers in the consistency, explosiveness and dynamite columns are how many times they have achieved good, excellent and outstanding points returns. The higher the numbers in those columns, the better the captaincy option.

The points for each category are:
Consistent 5-9 pts in a match
Explosive 10-14 pts in a match
Dynamite 15-19 pts in a match

Captaincy Strategies

Before looking at the individual players, here’s a few strategies to consider:

Something to play for this is arguably as important as fixture difficulty on the ticker, with many a double Gameweek impacted by a surprise name whose performance was vital to his club’s battle for position in the table. European qualification and domestic relegation are clearly the main battles here, with Arsenal, the Manchester clubs, West Ham, maybe Liverpool, Newcastle, Sunderland, and maybe Crystal Palace still focused on the standings.

Perhaps a Double Gameweek 37 club will have its fortunes changed by then, however; monitoring this situation will be crucial, though most FPL managers will have already committed to the use of the chip by that time. This could be an argument for a Gameweek 34 vs a Gameweek 37 triple captaincy.

Narrowing the odds – this depends largely on where you want your floors and ceilings to be located for the triple captaincy Gameweek. Obviously the worst case scenario is an injury or red card in the first half of the first match (a 3 vs a rival’s 60+ would be an absolute sickener), but more likely the range would be two blanks for a floor of 10-12 points, and two returns for a ceiling of around 50 points.

If you want to minimize the potential damage of a captain failure, the easiest solution is to load up on the stand-out options and be satisfied with however the most popular captaincy choice performs. A failure here still could sting more than usual, basically the equivalent of not even owning a highly scoring captain in a regular Gameweek, but it seems to avoid catastrophe.

Going with a differential captain could therefore be a risk worth taking, largely for the same reason as above: if you at least own the best options, you will have mitigated the downside of not captaining them somewhat.

When to triple captain –  Another factor to consider is those managers who are using the Bench Boost when you are using the triple captaincy.  In a weekly h2h or a mini league, Gameweeks 34 and 37 present opportunities to break from the crowd but also might limit the ability to block a rival’s moves.

The players

pic1captains

Note: Rondon has been wrongly listed as having a DGWK in GWK 37. It is GWK 34 that he has the DGWK.

Key Point: Reports of Sergio Aguero’s demise have been greatly exaggerated.

The timing of his most recent underperformance has been accompanied by a Harry Kane onslaught, which might be tainting people’s perceptions of the Argentine a bit. While Man City do look ragged, Aguero is actually a safer bet for returns now than he was in earlier parts of the season. Be warned though as most of his good hauls have come at home, while in double Gameweek 34 he will play both games on the road.

pic2captains

Note: Gardner has been wrongly listed as having a DGWK in GWK 37. It is GWK 34 that he has the DGWK.

Key Point: Plenty of midfield double up options

The Arsenal midfield duo of Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez seem to be the most popular picks for a double up, but as far as form is concerned, the West Ham and Liverpool mids have been much better of late. Triple captaining one of Ozil or Sanchez could be a shrewd move due to fixtures, pedigree and in Ozil’s case high ownership.

For those seeking a real differential, owning and triple captaining one of Dimitri Payet and Michail Antonio could be a good move, especially if Antonio plays in a more attacking position.

Likewise, using your triple captaincy with Liverpool by owning Roberto Firmino plus one of James Milner, Philippe Coutinho or Adam Lallana could also pay off.  Rotation fears are a concern here, though I believe Coutinho is worth the risk to triple captain due to his explosiveness. Milner is a dark horse due to penalty duties.

The Fixtures

Gameweek 34 seems to offer the best fixture pairings of the double Gamweeks so far, with Man United and Arsenal looking particularly impressive. However, the FA Cup presents an interesting rotation challenge for United, depending on the results of their replay with West Ham. If United lose and don’t play on the weekend of Gameweek 35, they would seem to edge it in terms of fixture strength, though Arsenal have a favorable set up with Sat/Thurs/Sun being their sequence of fixtures in Gameweeks 34 and 35.

For Gameweek 37, so much is up in the air as far as what positions teams will be playing for and whether Everton will have the rapturous promise of a potential triple Gameweek featuring Sunderland and Crystal Palace. However, as far as what we know now, West Ham seem to offer kind fixtures and the real potential of still playing for a Champions League spot, placing Payet and Antonio firmly on the triple captaincy radar.

Defenders

The best defences keep clean sheets 40% of the time.  Even when accounting for fixtures, captaining a defender for a double Gameweek seems a bit too risky since eight of the attackers listed earned returns in at least half of their matches in the time frame being discussed.

I don’t think it is a viable strategy, especially since attacking returns for defenders are so difficult to predict, but here are the four defenders whose attacking returns have separated them from their teammates in the backline: Hector Bellerin (4 c, 1 e), Branislav Ivanovic (2 c 2 e), Funes Mori (4 c, 1 e), Patrick van Aanholt (3 c, 1 e).

*c – consistent return, e -explosive return

Thanks for this. Looking at GWK 37 for the triple captaincy - Firmino or Payet currently the front runners by the looks of this.

      Gw 33-36

Lei fixtures - sun, WHM,SWA, manu
Spurs fixtures - MANU, sto, WBR, che

Currently, I have Mahrez, Huth, Kane and Alder. It looks liike i am in between the max benefit of BB 34 vs 37. Aren't me?

    Nice piece.

For me the Eve / CPL fixture determines everything - if it ends up in 37 then that pretty much forces me to play TC in 37 and my BB in 34 whereas I'm inclined to wait until 36 and BB in 37.

But you may not know when that fixture will fall before GW 33 / 34 when you'd have to decide which way you're going to go, especially if you still have to play your 2nd wildcard?

What do the numbers in the tables represent please? Are they rankings or the amount of times players have done a certain thing? Are there statistical definitions of Consistent, Explosive and Dynamite please?

Its how many times they've been explosive and how many times they have offered a consistently good return. So higher the number the better the captaincy option. Good numbers in both is captaincy gold - see Kane and Mahrez (who sadly do not have a double).

One of the problems here, is that there is a real danger that Antonio may not play.

He has had a very busy Season.

    1. Isn't he on a two week break now though?

Agreed, if anyone is a certainty for rotation in our side it's Antonio.

Is that because of his number of appearances or his shuttling back and forth between positions? Or both? Haven't heard much about how West Ham line up in attack when all are healthy at the back.

Is Lanzini or Antonio more favored or would they be the rotation candidates?

Firmino is the standout candidate IMO, followed by Payet. The larger sample helps regulate recency bias and shows them for who they are, which is often a pretty good predictor of who they will be going into the future.

The 34 v 37 debate is an interesting one. Really depends on when you want to use your BB, and which chip you value more.

Well said, the problem with a larger sample size is it doesn't allow for local effects such as player form, team form, runs of favourable/unfavourable fixtures or positional changes etc.

I'd take these stats with a pinch of salt and judge form and fixtures for the gw in question. Just because a player hasn't scored well at home doesn't mean he won't for example as it might just be misfortune or one of the local effects above.

To me, TC is almost created with Aguero in mind.

I still think those still have it, have missed the boat with his 25pts earlier in the season.

I'm reading through this and realizing that it hasn't really addressed many specific choices.

    A few thoughts on strategy:

Assuming many will have similar attackers from
Liverpool Everton West Ham and maybe even United for both 34 and 37,
(some collection of Payet Firmino Lukaku plus Coutinho/Antonio/Lanzini/Lennon/Lingard)
the choices really come down to

1 how to fill 3-4 attacking spots at most (Kane / Mahrez might already take 1-2 spots)
2 when to triple your captain and when to bench boost?

    Scenario A) TC in 34 vs a rival's BB
Your template team would look like
    GK
    ARS MUN ?
    Payet Ozil Firmino Mahrez ?
    Aguero Lukaku Kane

The safe play is TC on Firmino or Payet for form, Ozil for fixtures, Aguero for pedigree. Lukaku 34 is for masochists.

Will the extra dose of one of the above attackers outweigh the performance of a rival's four extra players in using a Bench Boost?

I saw someone use Ozil as an example last week by posting that if he gets any attacking returns, he is usually good for 8-10 points after baps. Those fixtures look tasty, so let's say he gets an 8 and a 12. 8+12=20*3=60, but that is really only a gain of 20 points over a normal captaincy.

A second GK, two DEF, and an eighth attacker should get you 16 points just for playing both matches -- assuming there will be more to play for in gw34 then 37, our carefully selected benches should be stronger and more nailed on at that time. If any of those four benchers gets a return, they will have collectively matched Ozil's haul.

    Scenario B) TC in 37 vs a rival's BB
Template here would probably look like
    GK
    MUN WHM CHE
    Firmino Payet Mahrez ?
    Kane Lukaku Costa

If form holds, the safe plays are on Payet, Firmino for both form and fixtures, Lukaku for fixtures, Costa for form, and Brady or Naismith for masochism.

Payet and Firmino could definitely match that 60 pointer from Ozil 34, so would a bench boost in 37 that your rival is using be as likely to match your 20+point TC advantage? Based on some of the posts here, I don't think so, or it is at least not as likely because of rotation and less to play for.

    TL; DR?
In my opinion, the BB in 34 and TC in 37 are the way to go.

34 is the dgw when more teams might still have something to play for, and even when factoring in cup/Europe rotation concerns, the bottom line is that with a bench boost you have to control/select four players, whereas with the triple captain you only have to manage one. The gameweek in which you have more choices for bench selection would likely be the one to choose.

This option also gives you a potential Lukakalypse if he gets a TGW...

Nice reasoning. Probably the only comment so far that has made me question my 34TC, 37BB commitment. Still think that'll be the way to go for those of us chasing or with a bit of balls as it seems the community is set on the 34BB, 37TC. Can't see Lukaku playing 3 games in a week if Everton do get the mystical TGW.

A very nice piece, TM. We probably don't see enough of you on FFS.

With the EVR/CPL confirmed in 33, most I'm sure will now be in the 34BB/37TC camp.

Looking at your evidence, Firmino and Payet look the most appealing and possibly Coutinho too on some recent showings. My only concern would by Payet being rested prior to the Cup in 37 but that's a long way off.

    Excellent work!

Cheers for the post. I too feel that those three mids in 37 are the most appealing options on paper. Team table position and rotation are possible concerns, but as you say that is a long way off. Payet edges it for me atm.

I also think that trying to bench boost in gw34 has to be the way to go since rotation should be less likely to kick in at that point.
