Captain Sensible – Gameweek 36

Next up this Friday, we roll out our usual pre-Gameweek members article and analyse the captaincy conundrum ahead of tomorrow’s deadline. As usual, we delve into the Opta data for the main contenders and assess the team statistics and Rate My Team’s reckoning, before rounding off with our opinion on the current poll standings in light of the data analysis, including our view on differential captains.

The Captain Poll

Alexis Sanchez leads the pack by some distance in the Gameweek 36 Captain Poll.

At home to a Norwich side with a single clean sheet on their travels all season, the Chilean has earned over 45% of the votes cast so far. Despite failing to get amongst the points in Sunday’s goalless draw at Sunderland, Sanchez has scored or assisted in seven of his last eight outings and has earned 39 points in his previous three at the Emirates.

Sergio Aguero is some way behind in second spot. Although he got amongst the goals at home to Stoke last week, the Argentine’s 69th-minute withdrawal against the Potters prior to last Tuesday’s Champions League semi-final first leg with Real Madrid has persuaded just 11% to hand him the armband for a trip to St Mary’s, bearing in mind the return leg in Spain is three days later.

Romelu Lukaku (8%) takes third spot for Everton’s home match against Bournemouth. Granted, the Belgian has no form to speak of – having drawn blanks in each of his last five in the league – but a total of seven efforts in last week’s cup loss to United at least suggests his threat is on the rise.

Daniel Sturridge is backed by only 4% due to concerns over Jurgen Klopp’s team sheet for Liverpool’s trip to Swansea. The England international was an unused sub in the first leg in Spain last night, though, which perhaps bodes well for his domestic minutes as he looks to continue a fine recent record of five goals and two assists in six league outings.

Despite scoring eight times in the last seven, Harry Kane earns just 2% of votes for Tottenham’s trip to Chelsea. The Blues have just one clean sheet in ten – against Villa – though if Leicester clinch the league at Old Trafford the day before, there would be major question marks over Spurs’ morale at the Bridge.

Elsewhere, West Ham duo Dimitri Payet and Andy Carroll could be overlooked options for the trip to West Brom. Payet has four double-figure hauls on his travels already – including two in his last four – whilst Carroll’s aerial threat could thrive from the Frenchman’s delivery against the Baggies as he seeks to extend his run of six goals in the last five league matches.

Are these current standings backed by the underlying statistics, though?

We begin by breaking down the player and team data for their respective last four matches in order to shed a little more light on the situation.

This is how my wildcard team is looking ATM, not sure if I'm convinced by it tbh though...got rid of KdB on basis he may not play also.

    Mannone
    Rojo, Monreal, Ake
    Sanchez, Firmino, Mahrez, Townsend
    Carroll, Aguero, Sturridge(c)

    Subs: DDG, Lingard, Fuchs, Azpil

    Hello again!

Just after some help for an amateur..

    Currently have:

    Robles / DeGea
    Simpson / Bellerin / Sagna / Gabriel / Clyne
    Lanzini / Alli / Milner / Sanchez / Coutinho
    Aguero / Kane/ Defoe

My thoughts are Alli + Coutinho > Mahrez + either:

    A) Willian
    B) Lamela
    C) Barkley

All for -4 or any other suggestions?

Unfortunately can't afford Fabregas or Hazard. I also still have my AAO and TC. Any thoughts on when to use these? Potentially thinking AAO this week due to my defence being awful so could play Bellerin and Sagna/Simpson? Maybe TC Sanchez last game week when they play villa?

    Thank you 🙂

Go fr it...logical thinking regarding tc and aoa. Willian is a good option along with Mahrez.

You could TC Defoe in his double gameweek 37. Or perhaps Willian in that week.

    Which out of these 3??
    1) Pelle > Defoe
    2) Alli + Pelle > Townsend + Defoe [-4] bring Haz in nxt week for KDB as I think Townsend will score more points than Haz this week.
    3) Alli + Pelle > Haz + Defoe [-4]

Can I get some help with my decisions for the weekend please?

Current teams - which is in ruins! I'm playing out of attack this week,

    Ddg (Darlow)
    Bellerin - Gabriel - (Simpson - Sakho* - Jagielka*)
    Sanchez - Payet - Eriksen - KdB - Alli*
    Kane - Martial - Mitrovic*

    1ft - 0.1m in the bank

Obviously Alli has to go, but also I doubt 3 of my defenders won't play, and also doubts over KdB and Mitrovic.

    a. Alli to Townsend
    b. Alli and Sakho to Lanzini and Cresswell
    c. Alli and KdB to Willian and Fabregas (ahead of the DGW)
    d. Alli and Mitrovic to Townsend and Carroll

    Thanks all

What I thought was good planning seems to have severely backfired due to rotation, and suspension.... any thoughts what to do with this lot?

Think I have 6 nailed on players this week...

    Robles, Mignolet
    Koscielny, Bellerin, Smalling, Rojo, Clyne
Sanchez, De Bruyne, Alii, Coutinho, Mahrez
    Aguero, Mitrovic, Rashford

I am deeply unhappy - both my goalkeepers (Robles & Migs) have been predicted to be benched, so I am going to have to make an unforeseen transfer thereby thwarting my cunning plan to have 2FT next week. Is there anybody at the FA/FIFA/European parliament/UN to whom I can address my complaint?

Sanchez is a safer option for (c) imo...Liverpools rotation is just too unpredictable.

It is amazing how much appeal Hazard has. He did nothing for 90% of a season and then boom, one good week and he is a massive bandwagon again. I can see why, too, but I think I'll just hope he goes back to blanking!

Hart, Alli, Vardy > Scwarzer (3.7), Willian, Lukaku?

Deeney or Townsend (going for differential to try and make up ground). Had Troy, then switched to Andros (more to play for and in good form), then back to Troy after the latest article on this page: Villa's defence and Deeney 2 in 6, amount of touches in pen area etc etc.
