Team of the Season – Toby Alderweireld

After impressing during a season-long loan spell at Southampton in 2014/15, Toby Alderweireld opted against making his move to St Mary’s permanent and instead joined Tottenham from parent club Atletico Madrid for a fee believed to be £11.4 million. The former Ajax defender linked up with Belgian compatriots Jan Vertonghen, Mousa Dembele and Nacer Chadli at White Hart Lane, and enjoyed a stellar season, culminating in his inclusion in the PFA Team of the Year.

THE STATISTICS

Priced at a mere 5.0 at the start of the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) season, Alderweireld wasted little time in establishing himself as one of the leading options for our five-man backlines. Tottenham registered three consecutive clean sheets between Gameweeks 4 and 6, while the Belgian served notice of his attacking potential by notching a goal and assist in his next four appearances. Shut-outs were then fairly sporadic for Mauricio Pochettino’s men, garnering just five between Gameweeks 11 and 29, before tightening up again as Spurs looked to challenge for the Premier League title, picking up four clean sheets in their next five matches before their late capitulation.

It was Alderweireld’s attacking prowess that stood him apart from many of the other defenders this season – he totalled four goals and three assists, with only Scott Dann and Patrick van Aanholt finding the net more often. That potential to deliver points at either end of the pitch understandably proved hugely popular with Fantasy managers as the Belgian’s price peaked at 6.5 in Gameweek 31.

Along with Leicester’s Wes Morgan, Alderweireld was one of only two defenders to play every minute this season and picked up just three yellows in 38 appearances. Despite averaging slightly less than Danny Rose per appearance (4.4 points to 4.5), that security of starts, due to Mauricio Pochettino’s penchant for occasionally rotating at full-back, strengthened his popularity across the Fantasy games.

After heading into the final weekend of the season as the top-scoring FPL defender, Spurs’ 5-1 loss at Newcastle, allied with Arsenal’s clean sheet at home to Villa, saw Alderweireld drop into second spot behind the Gunners’ Hector Bellerin by a tally of 166 points to 171.

THE PROSPECTS

Having significantly exceeded expectations this term, Alderweireld is in line for a hefty price hike, perhaps setting us back 6.0 or even 6.5 in FPL, thus moving him into the premium bracket.

With Rose and Kyle Walker likely to occasionally alternate with Ben Davies and Kieran Trippier, and Eric Dier set to be reclassified as a midfielder, the form of Jan Vertonghen could be key as to how we view the Tottenham defence in 2015/16.

The latter will surely come in cheaper than Alderweireld and, when fit, seems as likely a starter as his fellow centre-half. Providing he can rediscover the sort of form that served up five goals and three assists in his first season at the Lane, he could yet emerge as a target for the many that will understandably baulk at Alderweireld’s expected valuation. Given that Vertonghen failed to produce any attacking returns in 2015/16, firing an effort every 247.8 minutes to Alderweireld’s 89.9, that remains highly debatable.

Aside from Sunday’s 5-1 disaster at St James’, Tottenham were a much-improved defensive unit this season. They currently boast the second-most resilient defence, with 35 goals against, and kept 13 clean sheets, compared to just nine shut-outs during Pochettino’s first year in charge. With the Argentine signing a new contract in the last few weeks, we can expect the same sort of resilience again, with Spurs’ pressing game sure to earn them further defensive returns.

If he’s shifted as high as 6.5, Alderweireld may well struggle to find a place in our starting squads for 2016/17, unless we have the same sort of season where value in midfield comes quickly to the fore, thus allowing us scope to splash the cash elsewhere.

The underlying numbers indicate that the Belgian could yet justify any extra outlay for those keen on big-hitters at the back, though. He sits second for both shots and efforts in the box amongst defenders and has produced more attempts on target (13) than any other backline option. The fixture proof appeal that saw him score against four of the top seven – both Manchester clubs, West Ham and Arsenal – merely underlines Alderweireld’s Fantasy capabilities.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Seeing as we are now denied the joy of selecting from the ranks of Brighton next season I thought I'd focus on some other promotion targets to consider.

Here's a look at those who have been promoted so far.

I'll take a look at the winner of the Hull v Sheff Wed final after it takes place.

    Scouting the promoted teams

    Middlesbrough.

Given the likelihood of new recruits coming in there is slim pickings currently.

Jordan Rhodes is likely to be their most expensive striker. And his six goals since joining is impressive since joining in the Jan transfer window. One to watch but I’m not sure he’ll be a Charlie Austin or Troy Deeney.

David Nugent at 31 years of age is their top league scorer with 8. He also has seven assists though. I can’t see him being a regular starter and at best should get around 4-5 goals and a similar amount of assists.

Adomah looks interesting. Right sided attacking midfielder. Six league goals and five assists.

Gaston Ramirez looks set to move on after being on loan from Southampton. If he stays he’s one to monitor with seven goals from midfield.

Conclusion – Middlesbrough are not a free scoring outfit so may look to focus on defence when they take Premier League status. With 63 goals they were only the eight best in the Championship. But 22 clean sheets was a Championship best. With three goals Daniel Ayala looks the best option here, offering slight goal threat with potential for clean sheet points.

    Burnley

Championship Player of the year Andre Gray is the key man here, with an incredible 23 Championship goals plus seven assists. He could be another Sylvain Ebanks Blake, or another Charlie Austin. With a price tag hopefully in the 6m area he is arguably worth a punt at the start of the season to find out.

Sam Vokes is close behind with 15 league goals. He could be interesting if priced around 5m.

In midfield Scott Arfield’s eight league goals make him a potentially strong pick. And with five league goals old favourite George Boyd can’t be overlooked. David Jones, with seven assists, is another potential fifth midfield selection.

Conclusion – with 20 clean sheets Burnley’s defence is worth considering but it is in attack where Fantasy managers may get some real bargains. They ranked first for goals scored in the Championship, firing in 72. Another to monitor is Man Utd defender Michael Keane. If his loan spell is extended or made permanent, with five goals, he could be a good cheap defender.

Depending on price Arfield and Jones may be better bets.

Prices will certainly influence choices. I like Gray as a pick but suspect Boyd will be a popular nostalgia pick - not that he's a poor choice.

Being a Luton supporter, for the first time ever I have some kind of loyalty to a player in FPL!

Andre Gray was the Conferences top scorer when he took us up as Champions 2 years ago and I was lucky enough to catch his boot when he threw it into the crowd on the final day.

Will be interesting to see how he does and how easily I drop him if his form wavers at all.

He is fast, strong, and has a very hard strike on him. Should do well.

What about the likes of Kevin Foley, Curtis Davis, Matty Taylor, Kelvin Davies and, to a lesser extent, Mathew Upson and Leon Barnett?

Obviously not Mathew Spring as he played for W*tf*rd at the time.

Thanks for this Jonty. I think I am going to start the season with at least 1 Boro' defender. Hoping Ayala's price is not 5m and the usual 4.5m. 😀

Andre Gray is another I have my eye on as my cheap 3rd striker along-side Aguero/Kane/Sturridge/Costa. However , I think Burnley as a whole will struggle in the PL even though they won the Chapionship! A couple of good signings and you never..

I am also hoping that Hull are promoted . I think they have a couple of bargains in their ranks , especially their wingbacks.

Andre Gray, a Boro defender and that'll be my limit from the promoted sides unless there's any unexpected £4.0m players knocking about.

Gray is a player who popped up when I was researching a blog post called Finding the Next Jamie Vardy. The truth was I found no lower league players that profiled like Vardy but Gray came closest to him when I widened my search.

Link for the interested, though I will warn its a bit numbers heavy. https://medium.com/@balders93/finding-the-next-jamie-vardy-fda58b62f4c#.k9g9nvkik

      Boro season ticket holder here.

Undoubtedly the value will be in our defence and as you say Ayala will be the pick of the bunch. N'Sue at right back might be one to watch too, both full backs get in great forward positions but George Friend at left back has a poor final ball, so doesn't get nearly as many attacking returns as he should. Ben Gibson will offer a six point ceiling in games as he rarely goes up for corners. Defensively though we are very, very sound. We will sign a new keeper too, so that's one to keep an eye on.

Adomah could be an interesting fifth choice midfielder, as could Ramirez who has been outstanding playing in the number ten since he joined on loan.

Forget Rhodes, he'll be back up to a new striker - whoever that might be and Nugent will be replaced and sent back down to the Championship where is happy.

If, and it's a big if, Leadbitter starts the season (no Boro fan wants that!) he actually might not be a bad fifth midfielder as he is on all pens and most set pieces. He can't run though unfortunately - so its expected that he'll be replaced.

Having seen Burnley all season, there is nobody that stands out other than Tom Heaton. In terms of whether Andre Gray can step up, he played against us four times last season for Brentford and twice this season for Burnley and he hasn't had a kick in any game - that tells me he might not step up. The comparison I'd make is Callum Wilson who tore us apart at bournemouth last season.

Old Leadboots couldn't run when he left Ipswich a few years back so I'd hate to see him now! His corners also failed to clear the first defender about 90% of the time. Fine penalty taker though 🙂

I'll give him his due his corners have improved since Karanka took over and we're a threat from set pieces. In his first season, he perfected the art of the floating corner which which the keepers abolsutely loved!

Terrible luck from that first leg. They gave a great account of themselves last night...constant threat and knockaert was sensational. Could have been 4 - 5 goals on another day.

The Sheff Wed goal as well should have been disallowed. the Brighton defender was clearly pushed out of the way of heading the ball.

While it is sad that Brighton didn't get promoted after such a great season what is even sadder is that a poor team that like Sheff Wed may do so. I sincerely hope Steve Bruce teaches those Owls a solid lesson in playing proper football.

Been a while since Newcastle tasted play off action but I remember it well - we finished third, well clear of the chasing pack and lost to Sunderland in the semi-final. Its been over 25 years and I'm still sore.

Indeed, but can see why they have them. Gives four more team something to go for. The season run in would be boring if the top two places are the only prize.

Just a shame when teams like New or Brighton are streets ahead over a season, but are curtailed by injuries or other factors.

Losing to Sunderland is particularly cruel. The year we lost to Palace in the play offs was similar - although justified - they were simply a better team than us, as much as it pains me to say.

Brighton were undoubtedly extremely unlucky. However should Sheff Wed get promoted there is very likely to be huge summer investment in the squad and the starting 11 for next season could read very differently to the one which played last night. The owner is riddled out with cash and is not afraid to invest heavily. I would be very surprised if Wednesday were to go straight back down. Promotion was a 2 year plan and this is the first year of that plan.

            What a terrible comment.

You've judged Wednesday based on one performance, where we had our backs to the wall attempting to hold onto the advantage.

If you'd actually done some research you'd have seen that Wednesday have been an excellent footballing side, with some classy players like Forestieri and Bannan, and have played a very postive attacking style so far. They should not be judged on one cagey match.

To say they 'deserve to get beaten' is very harsh on Wednesday fans who've seen nothing but doldrums for 15+ years.

I've actually lost a bit of respect for you over that...

Burnley stopper Tom Heaton indeed looks like a great prospect, if as expected he is priced at 4.5m.

In the 2014/15 Premier League season he made 130 saves, that’s the third highest that season, behind Fabianski and Green.

But hang on Green was rubbish I hear you cry. Indeed. A closer look at how they saved shows why Heaton is in a different class to the hapless QPR keeper. While Green caught just 17 and parried away 69 shots, Heaton caught more than twice as many (36) and parried away less (58).

In terms of penalty saves Heaton is also a good bet. He was joint second, behind the great Adrian, with two pen saves.

He’s proven and looks a great bet for second keeper or part of a rotation.

I love a bit of Snodgrass (legal, I think?), so I hope Hull get promoted. A "slow trickle" set-piece player that will likely be good value and free cash for the Aguero, Kane and Sanchezes of the game.

        Sheffield Wednesday fan here.

I know we might not be the greatest team in the division but we are here on merit. There seems to be an awful lot of negativity towards us. I get that Brighton had a great season and were unlucky but they had 180 minutes to beat us and didn't.

My personal opinion is that Hull will beat us, it hurts me to say, but if by some chance we do get promoted we would need to sign a whole load of players to compete in the Premier League next season. On this seasons performances I would only consider possibly Ross Wallace has a cheap 5th Mid and Tom Lees has a defender. Daniel Pudil has been great but he is on a season long loan from Watford.

"Shut-outs were then fairly sporadic for Mauricio Pochettino’s men, garnering just five between Gameweeks 11 and 29, before tightening up again as Spurs looked to challenge for the Premier League title, picking up four clean sheets in their next five matches before their late capitulation."

I'd say it's rare. What is more common is a player doing well in pre season then not getting a game - sometimes because others are back from injury or due to new signings.

Reus, I'm not sure how he performs with the German side. I think Muller and Neuer or a defender are enough from Germany, Reus is expensive as well

Get as many predictable attackers as you can afford then nail the clean sheets. If you're short on cash don't be afraid to get a cheapo attacker or two if they're the leading men for their country. Think Ighalo at Watford type players, they invariably do better than bit part players in bigger teams.

Got very lucky with it personally too tbh, Toby was a constant thorn in my side as my (now defeated, yay!) ML rival kept harvesting the points and I had to hope for a Charlie Daniels double figure score or something to swallow the defecit.

Ended up caving and bringing him in during GW35 to cover me after a while because I was very close to my ML rival and had to block. Otherwise I might've gone without all season.

Well, the noise about Noble ahead of Wilshere is a bit too much now. Mark Noble at his best is still a mediocre Wham midfielder, a team who finished 7th in the league in spite of having a certain Dimitri Payet. Jack Wilshere got 4 MOTMs in a row, scored a couple of screamers in one of his last caps for England. If he cannot prove his fitness, that's alright - that's what 26 men have been picked for.

Cresswell? Has he really been better than Rose or Bertrand?

Except the selection of Rooney and Delph, I think this is the best Hodgson could have picked.

I think Cresswell has been better than Bertrand.

I agree with you on Noble not being selected.

Delph is a useless pick, but I think the English team needs a player like Rooney in Midfield, he will do well in that position

          • 11 Years

Nah he doesn't suit that position. He tackles like a forward, not enough bite to play in there, not mobile enough. Just sprays passes about but not like Scholes/Gerrard could. He's not a midfielder.

I agree that Wilshere has qualities that Noble doesn't. I think Noble should be ahead of Delph though. Milner is a boring pick for me.

Really don't think Rooney should be in the squad. Score all the goals you like in qualifying but he doesn't turn up when it matters.

Doesn't have to just come down to Wilshere. Could've brought Noble in ahead of Delph. Either way, I disagree on the assessment of Noble and think he's earned a call up.

Depends on how they play. If they want to stick with wingers, he's useful to have.

Plus, at 26, if you give him the opportunity now, assuming he continues to develop and play well, he could be called up for the World Cup and have some decent national team experience.

After having a brief look over some key stats in Euro qualifying, I recommend you have at least one defender from the following teams for the following reasons: *When I talk about a teams ranking, it is in relation to out of all the teams that have qualified*

      1) Portugal - Only conceded 5 times in qualifying and are placed in a group with Hungary who ranked second lowest for total goal attempts out of the teams that qualified and 5th lowest for goals scored. Iceland are also in their group who ranked 4th lowest for total goal attempts from the qualified teams.

      2) France - Although they didn't have to qualify for the tournament they are joint favourites and on paper have a great team. Couple this with the fact they have Romania and Albania in their group who ranked the lowest and third lowest for goals scored in qualifying.

      3) England - This may come as a bit of a surprise given that our defence can look shaky at the best of times but England conceded the third fewest goals in qualifying. In their group they face Slovakia who ranked 3rd lowest for total goal attempts in qualifying and Wales who scored the 4th fewest goals.

      4) Belgium - Probably quite an obvious choice but as with Portugal, Belgium only conceded 5 times in the qualifying process and sit in a group with Republic of Ireland who ranked lowest for total goal attempts in qualifying. Furthermore, Sweden are also in group E and they had the 5th fewest goal attempts in qualifying.

      5) Romania - We should be able to find some great budget selections from the Romanian defence who can still rack up the points. Romania surprisingly only conceded 2 goals in qualifying for the tournament and are placed in a group with Albania and Portugal who ranked 1st and 2nd for fewest goals in qualifying.

Of course all of this must be taken with a pinch of salt as the stats may be effected by the strength of the teams faced in qualifying and I know Portugal and Albania played 2 less games than the other teams but these are just my suggestions.

"Van Gaal is expected to pick the same team that was named against Bournemouth on Sunday, even though Champions League qualification is now beyond United and he has less time to prepare for the Cup final. The Dutchman will keep faith with that line-up, meaning Juan Mata and Wayne Rooney operating in advanced midfield positions behind lone striker Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard on the flanks."

With current squads, no chance. Investment needed seriously, and that can always also go QPR rather than Watford.

Sheffield Wednesday better team in first leg.

Brighton better team in first half of second leg.

Sheffield Wednesday better team in second half of second leg.

Sheffield Wednesday deserved to go through.

Sheffield Wednesday had horrible difficulties going forward in a game in which their opponent suffered 4 injuries and played one man down because of that. As long as they were even strength, Brighton created more and better chances. On the second match there was one team absolutely dominating, and that was Brighton.

There must be a Michael Caley xG map of this...

          yes there is:

          2nd:

          Combined:
          https://twitter.com/MC_of_A/status/732317979317313536

And that despite Brighton losing 4 players, important ones too, on injuries during the first leg.

If Wednesday go up I think their starting 11 in the Prem will be way different to the one which played last night. The owner is swilling around with cash and will inject a lot of money into the squad.

Being in a league with TLK and his premium defence has made me appreciate getting the heavy hitting defenders in.. Bellerin + Koscielny provided a nice double up for a while.

Toby + Lloris, not so much.

It seems you did pretty well without him though!

Toby at 5.1 was one my better buys, he was a constant source of points even when cleanies were hard to come by. He'll probably be my premium pick next year if Spurs have good fixtures early doors. That said if he's a million more than Rose or Walker I might cave on price.

Anyone have any particularly underrated goals in their minds that people need to see but may not have actually seen? 😀

      Two examples:

I always loved this goal purely for Guti's assist:

Something about the way Stankovic hits this always impressed me:

And his headers could be quite spectacular as well.
He was the Ronaldo/Messi of his time(I will always prefer Hugo, due to age probably).
I was fortunate to see him play live though I did not get to see him score with a bicycly kick he did smash a free kick in and a few 1 on 1's.

I'd seen G.Johnson's before (cracking goal).

The Taylor one just sat up so perfectly for him, he HAD to hit it, stuff of dreams 😉

Berger's was incredible, like a more audacious version of Henry's flick-and-volley vs United.

Right, so of the 26 Players Woy has picked, 3 have got to go before his final squad is announced.

Rashford is a cert to be left behind, and I imagine Delph would be cut also. Just leaves one more place to be cut.

I would personally drop Henderson (just come back from injury & I don't think we need him AND Wilshere. Just one will do.

      Thoughts?

Here is my biased view. DDG chasing golden glove. I would hope Martial is more droppable than smalling. LVG would prefer not to lose this so defence may be more important so hopefully smalling starts. Martial was dropped before due to fixture congestion.

I think DDG will start, but Martial will be on the bench. Just a guess, though. I think LVG will see it as another opportunity to give Memphis a start on the wing. I'd imagine Rashford will still start up front though as we're very short of options there, which means Martial should come on at some point as he probably won't want Rashford playing 90mins.
