Euro 2016 Team Analysis – Albania

Our Euro 2016 team analysis gets underway this morning with a look at rank outsiders Albania. Gianni de Biasi’s side open their Group A fixtures with a clash against Switzerland on Saturday June 11 at 2pm before taking on hosts France four days later (8pm) and finishing with a head-to-head with Romania on June 19 at 8pm.

Road to Qualification

Albania earned their place in the final 24 as one of the best runners-up after finishing behind runaway winners Portugal. De Biasi’s side ended with 14 points, winning four times and drawing twice in a group that also contained the likes of Serbia and Denmark.

Their defence mustered four clean sheets and conceded five times, scoring on seven occasions in as many matches, though the numbers are slightly skewed as they were awarded a 3-0 win over Serbia in light of their away fixture being abandoned.

Over the past 12 months, Albania have beaten France 1-0 and Luxembourg 2-0 in friendlies and also drawn with Georgia, though lost 2-1 to Austria in late March.

Most starts Etrit Berisha, Lorik Cana, Taulant Xhaka (8), Ansi Agolli (7), Amir Abrashi, Elseid Hysaj, Burim Kukelli, Ermir Lenjani (6)

Most goals Bekim Balaj, Berat Djimsiti, Shkelzen Gashi, Armando Sadiku, Mergim Mavraj, Ermir Lenjani (1)

Most assists Amir Abrashi, Ermir Lenjani, Taulant Xhaka, Ledian Memushaj, Odise Roshi (1)

The Key Targets

It’s fair to say that Albania’s main men may struggle to persuade Fantasy managers they are worthy of consideration. As shown by the numbers above, only one player – left winger Ermir Lenjani, with a goal and assist – played a part in more than one strike over qualifying.

Lenjani (priced at 5.5 in the Uefa game) is ranked second for both attempts on goal and key passes for his country over the qualifiers and sits joint-top for shots on target. Domestically, he made 10 of his 15 starts for Nantes last season at left-back and averaged more successful crosses per appearance in Ligue 1 than any team-mate – a factor to consider for the Draft Kings game, as crosses are key to the scoring metric.

Indeed, Albania’s left flank seems their prime source of creativity. Lenjani is second to full-back Ansi Agolli for crosses and chances created, which suggests that the latter – who is also top for interceptions – may be a better bet than the highly-rated right-back Elseid Hysaj, who played all but one Serie A match for Napoli last term. Both are priced at 4.5 in Uefa, as is centre-half Mergim Mavraj, who has three goals in 30 international appearances. Hysaj does rank top for successful tackles, though, and third for interceptions, which does somewhat strengthen his Draft Kings appeal.

Biasi’s emphasis on defence meant that Albania didn’t concede a single away goal on their travels. The Group A long shots are expected to line up in a compact 4-5-1, with a 4-2-3-1 set-up perhaps more of an option should they be forced to go on the offensive. That resilience could benefit Etrit Berisha, then – he is also 4.5 in the Uefa game and started every match between the posts. It’s worth bearing in mind that keepers earn five points in Draft Kings compared to three points for defenders.

In the centre of the park, Basle’s Taulant Xhaka, brother of Arsenal target Granit, looks the man most likely to be handed dead-ball duties and is slightly cheaper than Lenjani at 5.0 in the Uefa game.

Up front, Sokol Cikalleshi offered the greatest goal threat of any Albania player over the qualifiers and was joint-top with Lenjani for efforts on target. The downside, though, is that only four of his seven appearances were starts.

The Long Shots

The versatile Shkelzen Gashi offers De Biasi an option as a central support striker or alternative to Roshi wide right and could be utilised as an option later in matches. Coming in at 6.0 in Uefa, Gashi has Champions League experience and twice finished top scorer in the Swiss top-flight with Basle. He was ranked third for efforts on goal over the qualifiers, though featured on just four occasions.

Wonderkid Milot Rashica (5.5 in Uefa) could be one to consider. Named in the provisional 27-man squad – which will be whittled down to 24 players by May 31 – he was handed his first cap in March and served up eight goals and three assists for Vitesse Arnhem last term from a role on the right. The teenager has clearly impressed his manager, who has labeled him “an extraordinary player” after last year’s breakout season.

Ibrahimovic – a hit or an expensive miss

With Ibrahimovic saying he is on the look out for a new challenge and Mourinho a clear fan it seems that the Swedish international looks primed for a move to Old Trafford as part of an overhaul of Manchester United’s squad.

If he does, as widely expected, join ManU is he the first name on your team sheet? What price would you be willing to pay for him?

    The Zlatan pros.

Over a glittering career he scored 57 goals in 88 appearances for Inter Milan, 28 goals in just 32 games for AC Milan and most recently for PSG an incredible 113 goals in 122 games. Zlatan equals goals, always has, always will.

He likes Mourinho, and Jose likes him – this is key. Zlatan will be the new manager’s eyes and ears on the pitch and the dressing room. A trusted lieutenant.

    The Zlatan cons

He is 34 years old and is likely to be backed by another 30 something in Rooney as number 10. Pacy defenders may easily deal with these old fogies.

The French League is poor. Scoring against some of the French top flight’s lesser teams is one thing, but can he do it on a cold windy night at …Stamford Bridge, Anfield or the Emirates?

Zlatan is magic. See what Mou did with Drogba.

      Big hit.

      20+ goals.

Drogba is you're evidence?!! If he could turn me into a 20+ goals a season player, I'd be very impressed. But Drogba was always quality.

I'd find it extremely difficult to not just put him straight in my team. Quality player who could definitely do it in the Prem.

Is getting on a bit but we'll hopefully have some speedy players either side of him (Martial+Depay).

I'll pay whatever at this stage 🙂

Me too. Looks like a gamble with very low risk, whatever the price.

Also with Dembele missing the start of the season that counts Kane out early doors for me. In addition Liverpool's key player may arguably be Firmino, so that leaves more space up front and there's every chance a player like Andre Gray will offer the value needed to afford Zlatan.

I can't see Zlatan being less than 11m.

He's a RB these days and surprisingly effective there. Not sure he'd be good enough for Mourinho though.

Wrong word, Ryan. Not sure he'd be tall enough for Mourinho would be more accurate.

Mourinho will accept one smaller fullback if he's very quick. That's Shaw. He won't have two of them.

Hmm I'm not so sure tends to go missing in games like Betbatov did so although he will score goals, not sure he will be great for bonus points and will likely come in expensive, there may well be better value elsewhere.

Costa was the one who spring to mind when I was typing that out. If United can keep things tight again and scrape 1-0 wins with a Zlatan goal then he may well manage to get bonus points

Depends on the rest of the team. Costa struggles vs. Fab, Haz and his defence. United don't have those first two probelms.

he could easily come in at 12mil plus.

I don't think Utd have the supply for him with their current squad and they are in a rebuilding stage, if Mou buys 5/6 or more players it will take them a year to gel.

I won't be touching Utd players until I see a couple of consistent performances

He's one of those players you just have to get in, regardless of price. As long as he's cheaper than Aguero it's a no brainer.

He is bound to be a popular pick, everyone likes a shiny new toy and United players will always be popular, Zlatan could see you left behind if you go without or see you jump the rankings of you look elsewhere and he misfires.

This is an important point. Having both is only a fantasy, its not going to happen with a budget of 100m. Better to get the reliable Aguero and see how things go at United.

Too old and would need to adapt his game to thrive in the EPL.

Also not that he doesn't just have pace, he's actually slow which is more punishing in EPL than any other league. Think Torres, Shevchenko, Owen, RVP, Fowler and a great many other quality forwards who couldn't cut it once their legs went.

He'd likely be a huge price too, in a United team which will probably build from the back under Mourinho, so i'd expect a lot of victories by a single goal margin at the beginning of his tenure. Ibra would be 10.5m minimum so it wouldn't be a gamble worth taking, at least not initially.

    16. Camp No No
      • 10 Years

Not sure if it is so much that "Mou likes Zlatan and Zlatan likes Mou", than it is "Mou and Zlatan hate Pep together".

If pace was the key to ManU's game with Rooney and Zlatan, then that pace argument would have more pertinence - but if it was so, then probably they wouldn't be getting both in the same team but rather selling the one they already have.

Most of the French league teams are set up very defensively and are tough to score against. Less scoring chances and shots (both in quantity and in quality) in that league than in, for example, PL. PSG had 14.9 spg, there are 4 PL clubs that had more. On the penalty are shots they only lost to Arsenal though. Still less than Arsenal, despite having 8 penalties against Arsenal's 2.

I'll probably avoid initially, unless united have a very favourable opening run of fixtures and he looks good in preseason.

If he hits the ground running and scores well the opening couple weeks I'd likely just wildcard early to fit him in, although it might mean 3-5-2 in order to fit both him and aguero in!

I think he's a must buy at 12m or below. Shouldn't be hard fitting him and Kun in but you may have to forgo Sanchez and/or KDB. Still too early to discuss because Arsenal will make a fwd signing as well and if it's someone like Morata, I can see his price being quite favourable.

Luke Shaw will be my man! He really, really impressed me last season at the start of the year, like a young Gareth Bale (not "vs Inter Milan Gareth Bale", but still! 😛 )

Xhaka is a good player, fancy him to help Sanchez/Giroud's output if he's still the number 1 striker.. Interesting to see if he takes Ramsey's spot, they have so many mids these days!

Could be a big season for Coutinho + Firmino, choosing which to own (or when to have BOTH?!) could be a big thing this season. Very interested to see which attackers Klopp is going for.

Had him at the start last year when everyone was going Darmian. Think he would have done really well without that injury.

Big hopes for him this year.

    Euro fantasy rule check:
A few people have talked about replacing their low scoring defenders with others yet to play from their bench, presumably a bit like in UFPL. I don't see anything in the rule to suggest this is possible. Can anyone enlighten me as to what I'm missing?

"Your team will be locked only when the first match of the day starts, so you can make any changes you need to your team until the scheduled start of the match – you can transfer/substitute players depending whether it's a transfer or substitution period.

The substitution period will be available between gamedays where you can replace a starting XI player with a bench player."

    Completely missed the new post!
This is a draft if I was planning on wildcarding after the first week -

    Lloris [ROU] Almer [HUN]
Rodriguez [ALB] Schar [ALB] Alba [CZE] Williams [SLO] Dragovic [HUN]
Perisic [TUR] Grosicki [NI] Alli [RUS] Rafa Silva [ISL] Memushaj [SWI]
Janko [HUN] Ibrahimovic [ROI] Lewa [NI]

    Captaincy - Lloris-Schar-Lewa-Ibra-Janko

And I don't think Cabaye has ever taken a penalty for France. Nor is he in set pieces. It's between Payet and Griezmann, even if Cabaye played (which he mostly won't).

                  Here's more easily from transfermarkt:

                  http://www.transfermarkt.com/yohan-cabaye/elfmetertore/spieler/29434

Those France and Italy penalty taker positions are pretty much guessing game.

That France penalty taker is very unsettled and may be simply up for grabs now that both Benzema and Valbuena are out. Gignac is the last one of the current players who have taken a penalty for France, but Griezmann wasn't on field back then:

                  https://www.fff.fr/equipes-de-france/1/france-a/matchs/1888/2014-10-14/armenie-france

That was a bit of reserves team and almost 2 years ago, and seen that Griezmann and Giroud have taken successfully on top level for club, and Deschamps appreciates that, there's a chance it's either of them. What makes it worse is that neither Giroud nor Gignac is nailed on, but both _may_ take penalties before Griezmann.

Although Italy didn't choose their penalty regulars Balo and Pirlo, it's a bit more clear for them if they take De Rossi, because he recently took a penalty despite both Candreva and Pirlo being on the pitch. So the no. 1 could presumably be him - if he plays. But that's just the thing, Italy's lineup has been very unstable recently and De Rossi has hardly featured. Maybe they've just been trying others, but there's a decent chance he won't be playing. Italy also has a similar situation as France in that they lack a clear no. 1 starting CF and are a bit of a mess attack wise, so there's no standout nailed on taker to be found that way either.

Candreva converted one in the qualifiers

                  http://www.transfermarkt.com/antonio-candreva/elfmetertore/spieler/25488

But neither De Rossi nor Eder was on the field:

                  http://www.transfermarkt.com/spielbericht/index/spielbericht/2429462

...and he has a very strong penalty record in the leagues:

                  http://www.transfermarkt.com/eder/elfmetertore/spieler/37418

If he starts, he may as well be the no. 1 taker, but that's a bit speculative of course. As it stands, it should be De Rossi, Candreva. But that's very inconclusive.

As a very rough guide, take the total 2015/16 points and divide by 20.

They will then tweak that up and down for specific players to take circumstances into account. For instance an injury-hit season, previous much better seasons (or much worse ones), new club, new position and so on. That part is obviously done manually.

They will also squeeze prices up or down to fit in the bandings they decide upon. For instance, the GK price band was compressed into the 4.0 to 5.5 range last season having previously been 4.0 to 6.0.

          No, they won't.

Hazard probably 10.0 or 10.5. Costa probably 10.0 if he is still there. Pedro maybe 8.5.

Cuadrado will likely be a good option though. Zouma could be too.

Currently filling this up for an Indian website interviewing me since i topped the country. Anyone have any nice answers to use?

    1. Congratulations Pranil! First up, how does it feel to finish as the number one Indian manager in Fantasy Premier League 2015-16?

    2. What were your emotions like as the final day of the season progressed? Did the news of the postponement of Manchester United-Bournemouth make you nervous?

    3. As you know, this was a very unpredictable Premier League season because of Leicester City’s unprecedented rise to the top. What strategy did you employ to navigate through the uncertainties of the FPL campaign?

    4. What made you decide on bringing in Olivier Giroud and Sadio Mane as your final transfers of the season?

    5. I can see that you used your two Wildcards in Gameweek 3 and 36. Tell us your thinking behind that?

    6. Tell us your opinion about the 3 chips introduced by FPL this season. How helpful were they to you in retrospect?

    7. What particular clubs and players were the key to your success? Which player was entrusted with the captain’s armband most often by you this season?

    8. How conservative an FPL player are you? How often did you take hits this season?

    9. What were the best and the worst decisions you made over the course of the season?

    10. You finished with a global ranking of 77, 2212 and 189 in the last 3 FPL seasons. What do you think is the secret behind your consistency?

    11. Which Premier League club do you support? How happy are you with your team’s final finishing position in the league table?

    12. Lastly, what tips would you like to pass on to other Indian FPL managers?

Where have we heard that before?

Oh wait, when he was going to create a dynasty at Chelsea...

Mourinho to win a cup and get back in top 4 first year, but won't win the PL or CL with Pep's City around and will likely ruin the Man U careers of Rashford, Lingard, Fosu-Mensah et al.

      1. Somalion
        • 14 Years

My point being he seems to have some obsession with United. Seems like brutal planning if that's the only aim, and I don't agree that Pep's City will now go on and win both PL and CL immediately.

Also I said nothing like building a dynasty or any of that nonsense. What I said was we may see a different Mourinho. One who doesn't fall out with the higher ups as easily, and who may give younger players more of a chance.

I was just referring to the 'being there for a long time' part.

He may well be successful in the short term, but I don't agree that he can change his ways. He's confrontational and burns bridges to get what he wants immediately; it never lasts.

He's far from my first choice. All I know is he's so keen to push through a deal it sounds like he's not even discussing wages. Just wants it done. I don't know how reliable that is or what it indicates, but I just can't really understand why he's be so eager only to burn out and leave after a couple of years.

My guess; he thinks he can win.

I've never seen Jose as someone motivated by money, it's all about winning.

He's been at Chelsea and Madrid, Barca, City and Bayern don't want him; this is the place he's most likely to win a major trophy.

My sense was he wasn't remotely interested in Barca, City or Bayern though (again, can't vouch for how accurate that is). As for Chelsea and Real, I agree he burned out of them quick, but so do most managers at these clubs. Chelsea will always overturn managers as long as Abramovich is interfering and Real strike me as similar, very happy to sack a manager regardless of success.

Pep's going to need to put in a LOT of work with youth players and new signings if he wants success at City, they won't win the PL with Yaya, Fernandinho, Bony, Nasri, Zabaleta, King Kolarov..

Mourinho does seem to be obsessed with United, or else it was just Alex Ferguson he was obsessed with. Either way, I think he'll treat the club with a lot more respect than he's done with previous employers. I don't think it'll work out as well as he's hoping though and he's going to have to make pretty wholesale changes to either their style of play or their personnel.

I'm really interested in seeing what happens with Poch's Spurs, Conte's Chelsea and Klopp's Liverpool. Tough year to call!

          Although Arsenal will get 4th.

Certainly should be an interesting season, it's very hard to call a top 4 which is always good for competition.

At least 7 teams will be thinking they should be in the CL, which clearly leaves 3 missing out!

Not sure on Arsenal getting 4th at all next year. I actually believe it might be the year that they won't manage it. Only with some good signings and holding onto Sanchez and Ozil will it be possible.

What do you think of this? Is my defence too weak? Any recommendations to replace Alaba (cos he is a DM) ?

    Patricio / Almer
    Hector / Schar / Carvajal / Denayer / Matel
Hazard / Perisic / Alaba / Alli / Rafa Silva
    Ronaldo / Mulller / Giroud

I'm in the anti-Ronaldo camp for this tournament (well at least the start of it) but other than that it looks good.
Denayer is in my team, need the friendlies to confirm if he'll play, same with Carvajal.

Only thing I'd change is one of your keepers, they both play on same day so no chance to rotate

Carvajal and Matel need monitoring during the friendlies as aren't nailed. Berisha is a cheap nailed on GK instead of Almer. Monitor Ronaldo's potential injury

Fair enough. I just do not see the appeal in Schar @5.5m . He has only score 1 goal in 24 Bundesliga matches this season. Djourou has 2 goals and costs 0.5m less. Matel has a tough opening fixture and Croatio have 2 easy ones , hence the other transfer but I agree , some more research must be done.

RMT please, tried to go for value in midifield to keep my attack so heavy!

    De Gea (Randolph)
    Mangala, Eliseu, Ramos (Denayer, Vrsaljko)
Alli, Kroos, Fellaini, Matuidi (Renato Sanches)
    Ronaldo, Kane, Lewandowski

Very happy with it at present really wanted griezmann but him being classed as a forward killed it

Matuidi is a doubt but 7 goals in his last 22 games is decent and theres too much uncertainity with payet, coman, martial etc

Your keepers play on the same day

If Mangala is nailed then I'll be on him, Ramos worries me rather go Pique.
Can't help but think there are better midfield options - Alli is good value pick but Fellaini & Kroos aren't convincing when there are players like Alaba, Grosicki and the spain midfielders

Off the top of my head, I thoroughly enjoyed Liverpool 3-3 Arsenal when the title was still a strong possibility for the Gunners and Kloppmania was in full swing.

That and Chelsea 2-2 Tottenham last month was one for the ages.

Having read the headline in one of the recent BBC footy pages - maybe the FPL game could be altered to include the manager! Not necessarily advocating this myself but wondered what others thought. There are some games that use this modification - are there not?

Haven't given much thought to it really ..... off the top of my head
+/- points for mid match changes that a manager made which turned the result around (either way)
        points for win and draw
minus points for being sent to the stands

        clutching at straws really! 🙂

    2. Rum Ham
      • 9 Years
      7 years, 11 months ago

Would be interesting for sure, but difficult to incorporate into the traditional system.

Perhaps a 10.0m budget on two managers. So each gameweek you can set your manager (who scores you points) and the assistant manager (i.e. a bench manager) depending on the favourable fixtures. 3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw and 0 for a defeat is added to your gameweek score. Each person is limited to 5 managerial transfers per season not including the wildcards where manager changes are also permitted.

Some interesting ideas here - maybe scope for discussion on a wider scale. I doubt that FPL Towers would contemplate it, but stranger things have happened - who'd have thought that we'd have chips with FF??

          • 9 Years

I don't think it would affect the game so much as in theory you're only vying for a maximum three extra points per gameweek. But it would be food for thought.

Not that I am advocating the introduction of this, mind. The chips were enough for me to get my head around this season.

    Good day one and all,
Looking forward to the euros - but no Pogba love? Is he injured?

Who's your top picks for mid/strikers?

Only just catching up with this now, thanks guys

Hard to see past Muller - thrives in the tournaments.

Griezmann looks good given France's chances and their weak group.

Affordable midfielders include: Grosicki, Alaba, Weiss/Hamsik, Perisic

This is brilliant. Thanks. Yeah Muller was first name on my teamsheet. Kadlec usually does well for a defender. Cool, thanks both

Just looking up the stats - in a group containing Germany and Ireland, Lewandowski got 13 goals and 4 assists which comes to a goal or assist every ~51 minutes. If he were to keep this up in the group stages, he would, using the ratio from qualifying, score 4 goals and 1 assist. Essential.

You should discount any goals or assists vs Gibraltar.
