First up in our Group D analysis is Croatia. Ante Cacicโ€™s men get their tournament underway against Turkey on Sunday June 12 at 2pm before facing up to Czech Republic five days later at 5pm and then going head-to-head with Spain at 8pm on Tuesday June 21.

Listed as second favourites to win their group, Croatia face a tough task to progress if they make it into the last 16 โ€“ should, as expected, they finish runners-up to Spain, theyโ€™d take on the winners of Group E in the first stage of the knockouts, which would pit them against the likes of Belgium or Italy.

Road to Qualification

Croatia finished second in qualifying Group H behind Italy, winning six and drawing three of their ten matches in a table that also included the likes of Norway and Bulgaria.

Their progress was far from plain sailing, though. Installed in the hotseat towards the end of the qualifying period after the dismissal of Niko Kovac, the inexperienced Cacic has been criticised for his tactics, with a recent friendly against Israel seeing him trial four different formations. Heโ€™s also had a public falling-out with Liverpoolโ€™s Dejan Lovren and has omitted the centre-half from his squad for the tournament.

Deducted one point due to their fansโ€™ off-field behaviour, Croatia produced 20 goals over their ten group fixtures, with 11 of those strikes arriving in home matches against Azerbaijan and Norway. At the back, they conceded just five times and earned six clean sheets, shipping more than a single goal on one occasion.

Croatia have played five friendly matches over the last 12 months, winning four times โ€“ against Gibraltar 4-0, Russia 3-1, Israel 2-0, and Moldova (1-0 last week) – and drawing 1-1 with fellow-qualifiers Hungary. They head into Saturdayโ€™s clash against San Marino on the back of a run thatโ€™s seen them lose just once in the last 12 fixtures.

Most Appearances Danijel Subasic, Ivan Rakitic (10), Vedran Corluka, Darijo Srna, Domagoj Vida, Marcelo Brozovic, Ivan Perisic (9), Luka Modric, Mateo Kovacic, Mario Mandzukic, Ivica Olic (8), Josip Pivaric, Andrej Kramaric (6)

Most goals Ivan Perisic (6), Marcelo Brozovic, Luka Modric, Andrej Kramaric (2)

Most assists Ivan Rakitic (4), Dario Srna (3), Ivica Olic (2)

The Key Targets

Priced at 7.5 apiece in the Uefa game, midfield pair Ivan Rakitic and Ivan Perisic look the top two contenders for those eyeing up Croatiaโ€™s main men.

Both players make a convincing case for consideration. Inter winger Perisic fired more attempts on goal than any team-mate during qualifying and registered more than three times the number of shots inside the box than Rakitic. As a result, he ended the campaign as top scorer, with six strikes, and has continued that form in recent friendlies, producing a goal and two assists over the last three matches.

Although Rakitic scored just once by comparison, he managed just two attempts less than Perisic over the group matches, though most of his threat is from long distance. The Barcelona man is Croatiaโ€™s chief source of creativity, though โ€“ his 35 key passes is almost double the number of Perisic and Luka Modric combined, whilst heโ€™s the undisputed number one for dead-ball duties and should provide crosses aplenty, which boosts his DraftKings potential.

Up top, spot-kick taker Mario Mandzukic fired more efforts inside the box than any Croatia player during the qualifiers but found the net on just one occasion. Priced at 8.0 in the Uefa game, he looks guaranteed to start regardless of whether Cacic plays one or two up top and could be worth considering if he can rediscover the form that produced 13 goals and five assists for Juventus in 2015/16.

At the back, Darijo Srna looks the likeliest source of points at both ends of the pitch, though comes in at a pricey 6.0 in the Uefa game. Second only to Rakitic for both key passes and crosses, his raids from full-back provided a trio of assists over the qualifiers, whilst Srnaโ€™s defensive numbers also bode well in DraftKings.

The Long Shots

Whilst thereโ€™s no question over his security of starts, Luka Modric (7.0 in Uefa) may struggle to justify his inclusion in our squads. The Real Madrid man is likely to be stationed in the double-pivot and, although he found the net twice during qualifying, mustered just three shots on target over his eight appearances.

An under the radar option, Marcelo Brozovic is likely to partner Modric in central midfield and comes in at just 6.5. The Inter Milan man also scored twice in qualifying, though his stats are more impressive โ€“ indeed, he produced more than double the number of efforts inside the box than Modric and also bettered him for tackles and interceptions. Brozovic grabbed a goal and assist in a 2-0 friendly over Israel in March and also netted in a win over Russia in November.

At the back, keeper Danijel Subasic and the versatile Domagoj Vida are both available for 5.0 and look nailed-on for those looking to invest in Croatiaโ€™s defence. The latter led the way for interceptions over the qualifiers and registered five efforts inside the box โ€“ more than any defender.

Sime Vrsaljo comes in at 4.5 and, after starting each of the last two friendlies at right-back, has been selected by 3% of Uefa managers. It looks debatable as to whether he can retain a place in the XI when the tournament gets underway, though. Although skipper Srna is versatile enough to shift over to the left, heโ€™s expected to be stationed on the right, with Vida taking up the left-back berth and Vrsaljo dropping to the bench. As we saw against Moldova, though, Vida could also be utilised at centre-half if Cacic wanted to field the likes of Napoliโ€™s Ivan Strinic (4.0) on the left instead.

Nikola Kalinic is less certain to start under the new manager but could be worth monitoring if he can nail down a berth in the first XI. Priced at 6.5 in the Uefa game, he netted 12 times for Fiorentina in last yearโ€™s Serie A and could offer Cacic an option alongside Mandzukic if Croatia opt for a two-man frontline.

      I'm wondering that too.

Ozil scored precisely zero goals during qualifying with 4 assists. And that didn't add up to a lot of fantasy points. But was he No.10 for any of those games? I don't know. If not, would playing No.10 in the tournament proper help him score goals? Those are the key questions and I don't know how to answer them ๐Ÿ™

Near enough half of Gotze's for shots and shots in box. But Gotze played more.

No spain defender. I personnaly don't like the Hinteregger pick cause he plays last so if he does bad then he does bad. Pogba is a great player but I don't think he will earn you lots of points. You could go Hinteregger > Juanfran , Pogba > Payet and something like Alaba > Junu (they are similar players) to free up the needed 0.5 . Other than that I like your team

maybe. You never know tho, sometimes people don't like to negotiate. Perhaps they think it's fair and a 'take it or leave it' scenario.

      2. Somalion
        • 16 Years

Can't see why they would either. Then again, they've repeatedly stated how desperate they are to sign a "top class" striker, so maybe they'd let him leave. Speculation on my behalf, but not sure how happy I'd be as a striker there listening to the owners talk about how much they need someone with more goals in them.

Very true! Last I saw they were after Bacca but their bid was rejected (for the better I think, Bacca is good but he'll be 30 by the start of next season.)

he's a good player, but I'm not sure he's much better, and I can't imagine Milan wanting to sell for less than the €30m they spent on him. Crazy move imo

                10 years, 9 days ago

I know. Tbh I dunno what they're at. They need another striker, that's fine but then they bid £15m for Bacca which was never going to be accepted.

If they want a really top player they need to break out the big money and for someone a bit younger.

Aboubakar, and as it's Porto, you can expect it would take the big money too. ๐Ÿ™‚

Embolo & Batshuayi are decent shouts too, and seems to be linked to pretty much everyone - particularly Embolo...

Last I heard he was linked Spurs. Also strongly reported to be subject of a record transfer bid from ambitious new Bundesliga side RB Leipzig. They seem to be interested in Timo Werner now though.

Neymar's father hints that a move to PSG would be considered.

    http://esporte.uol.com.br/futebol/ultimas-noticias/2016/06/02/psg-tenta-neymar-pai-vira-assunto-delicado-e-renovacao-com-barca-atrasa.htm

Meanwhile, Al-Khelaïfi promises big changes, while Simeone considers whether he should leave Atletico as he failed to win the CL final again... which set tongues wagging, of course. The change from the elegant possession football loving gentleman Blanc to the pragmatic fight by all means Simeone would be drastic. It would probably take some time from the team to adapt to new strategy (and some new recruitments of course).

I can see that happening, Barca need to sell one of the big three, not many teams are viable suitors for any.. PSG fit the bill for Neymar but would he see it as a big step down?

Apparently wouldn't see it too much of a step down, and there's the appeal of being the no. 1 star, according to his father.

I can see this happen too, particularly now that they gave such a lucrative contract to Busquets too, and Neymar only has two seasons of contract left. His father says very clearly that Neymar won't play another season with his current salary, and Barcelona are not rising his salary without prolonging his contract. They're in talks for a prolongation until 2021 or 2022, but meanwhile PSG is offering more money and a bigger star role. So why not?

On the other hand, Al-Khelaïfi just suggested that he's not going to directly replace Zlatan, because he's got Cavani to that position. But Neymar plays on flank anyway.

Am I missing something here, why do all the bookies have Greizman lower odds than Giroud to be Frances top goalscorer?
Also, i'm playing a fantasy game with friends where you have to pick one player from each time and you only get points for a gol so would you choose mandzukic OR Perisic for Croatia? (Basically, who will score more goals/ is a bigger goal threat)

Because the markets are still young. They don't want money for Greizman so as soon as there is a minor amount of money for Giroud they will react. Back Giroud now ONLY if you think Girouds price is bigger than it should be. Good luck.

Just to be clear, we get one free transfer after each Matchday in the group stages. So that's two free transfers for the whole of the group stages. You can roll the first one over so that you have two for the last round of games in the group stages. Then we get unlimited transfers for the first knockout round.

I was just reading through the rules on the fantasy football

Wouldn't it make sense to get a full team good for gw1 (no Belgium/Italy as there against each other so hard match etc.) and then wildcard the next week as you'll know the players who are performing

plus you get unlimited transfers for the round of 16 so you need to use it before it?

I think it's best used either after MD1 or before the QF! After the round of 16, you only get 4 free transfers so you may end up having more than 4 players out of the competition at that time if you picked players from the wrong teams. No?

    RMT fro the experienced crowd?

2mil in the bank (would like to keep this for matchday 2 changes)

    sommer(almer)

    rami, ramos, rodriguezz (denayer, hinteregger)

    grosicki, hamsik, mak, perisic (alaba)

    giroud (c), milik, muller

My only real dilemma is whether i should keep both mak and hamsik..I recently had payet/konoplyanka instead of mak, but choise mak for his security of starts vs payet and the better team he has around him vs konoplyanka.

Anyone else have both mak and hamsik?

    Cheers!

I wouldn't double up on Slovakia. We see the France starting xi so Payet is in my team if he starts.

      1. junk301

My concern over payet is not only game 1, but the full 90 as well as match-day 2 and 3. martial will with 100% certainty get playing time. I do agree with the worry about doubling up on slovakia...its hard not to have mak at 6.0..but hamsik is the heart of their team so dropping him could be regrettable. I feel like slovakia will edge russia and wales.

        Thanks for the reply

      Iniesta - Busquets - Koke/Thiago/Fàbregas
      Silva/Pedro - Morata - Nolito/Pedro

No point giving false info saying certain players are nailed, who really aren't. There's a lot of that going round on here at the moment. Don't remember it ever being this bad, there's players who have always been 50/50 for their positions being labelled as 'nailed'. Hinteregger, Emre Can, Vrsaljko ....

      1. VS10_
        • 10 Years

I'm not saying Nolito etc. are nailed. They just currently seem first choice and that is what I'm predicting. Hinteregger has started 4/4 of Austria's last games.

I didn't mean you mate. If I'm honest I didn't even read your reply above, and I also think Nolito will play. Fàbregas I'd be less sure of, though.

I also fancy Hinteregger to get the nod at CB for Austria, have said that weeks ago as he's better imo. The word nailed is just flying around far too much on players that aren't.
