Romelu Lukaku breaks his six-month barren spell by taking it out on a beleaguered Sunderland back four. The Belgian’s second half blitz transformed Everton as Ross Barkley watched on from the bench having been hooked at half-time. Here’s the final Stock Check of Gameweek 4….

On the Rise

Romelu Lukaku
Without a goal in his previous 12 Premier League matches, Lukaku notched his first and then filled his boots as Sunderland caved in.

You could almost see the Belgian grown in stature and confidence and with Yannick Bolasie storming down the right flank, Lukaku was able to help himself to a hat-trick in just 11 minutes.

He could and should have had more – Lukaku registered nine efforts on goal, six of which hit the target – no player in any Gameweek this season has matched those statistics.

With Middlesbrough at home next, followed by meetings with Bournemouth and Palace, it would seem that Everton’s fearsome front man has found form just as the fixtures fall into his lap.

Should he return points against Boro, those who brought in Lukaku for Aguero may well face a difficult decision come Gameweek 6.

Yannick Bolasie
A barnstorming performance from the DR Congo winger terrorised the Sunderland defence which culminated in him laying on Lukaku’s second with a sublime run and cross.

While Bolasie’s 6.0 price tag looked a step too far at Palace, in this kind of form and with Lukaku converting his supply, it suddenly seems very tempting indeed.

The winger was replaced late on with a knock, although he appeared to be suffering from cramp.

Leighton Baines
Back to back clean sheets and two bonus points tonight, Baines is up and running without finding assists or converting a spot-kick as yet.

The aforementioned fixtures could offer further returns, with Koeman’s Everton looking far more secure and efficient than the version under Roberto Martinez.

In Decline

Ross Barkley
Koeman’s ruthless decision to hook an ineffective Barkley sent a sure-fire message that will have shook the midfielder’s 18.6% ownership.

Brought in by over 60,000 prior to Gameweek 4 ahead of Everton’s favourable schedule, it’s now clear that Barkley’s pitch time is far from secure – Koeman will not be as lenient as Martinez with an inconsistent Barkley.

Everton’s second half transformation without him certainly puts Barkley’s start against ‘Boro in doubt.

Mason Holgate
Owned by 7.1% and transferred in by no less than 180,000 FPL managers heading into the Gameweek, it nonetheless came as no surprise when the 19-year-old gave way to Seamus Coleman.

It was convenient while it lasted but Holgate’s opportunities will now be limited at best. Even if Koeman switches to a three-man defence, he would seem unlikely to earn starts.

Patrick van Aanholt
The Dutchman stuck to his guns against a lively Bolasie in the first half but bizarrely, with Bolasie swapping flanks, he struggled in the second 45.

Caught out of position on numerous occasions, he may yet come under threat, although Moyes’ options appear limited.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

With so much current and potential value around is it time to start looking at a team without both Ibra, or Aguero or perhaps neither?

Maybe it's knee jerk but there's some excellent buys out there - Kane, Lukaku, Costa, Benteke, Sterling, Cazorla, Antonio and Lallana to name a few.

Or is it far too risky given ownership and goalscoring talent?

I think we will need them all but at different times. This year is about having the skill to bring them in at the right times rather than last year when you could just sit on spurs and Leicester players

Don't do that. Only striker in the league capable of a 20+ points haul.

Too risky given ownership, talent and captain potential of the two.

Lukaku just ended a spell of 11 games without a goal so some perspective is needed, Kane has not done that much better.

If you can play the game dodging them as captains than fair enough, saying that, Aguero is 25% owned now so maybe the rush to get him back can wait a week or two if Lukaku rips Boro apart.

depends if the early midfield surprises such as Capoue & Snodgrass maintain their form. If they do, then I'll be happy to be a minority owning Zlatan & Kun

      Absolutely yes.

My team of Belgians in the RVP golden year was proof that it could be done...

Benteke Mirallas (he was a forward) Lukaku was scoffed at but I did really well.. This season is similar imo...

Its a competition for the best stats. Lukaku smashed it tonight but Ibra has amazing stats too and Aguero consistently has good stats. its time to let the raw numbers and fixtures to do the talking and pick the best of the very best. Good players with good stats will miss out.

For me Ibra & Kun are guarantees of points. Lukaku won't play Sunderland every week.

With Antonio & Cazorla I think better value downgrading in midfield than up front

just aguero for me, feel the both unbalances team, of course if they both keep scoring, then hard to ignore
but if kane lukaku costa mane kdb etc are scoring points they do give you other options, depends on if you invest alot of your money in ibra and kun, think you need at least one of them for the time being, good luck all

Was already planning to go without Ibra. The emergence of premium mids and cheaper alternatives up front have changed things from the first few weeks, where Kunbra became template. If that continues....

Aguero is probably worth the money as he's a constant captain option pretty much regardless of the fixture. Don't think Ibra matches up to the same degree.

I think tonight showed the value of waiting until the end of the GW before making your FT.

Against my own advice I did Gray -> Benteke early.

On topic, the difficulty with United and City is I want an attacker but I don't see any options in midfield for either which are anywhere near to rivalling Ibra and Kun.

Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool and to a lesser extent Spurs offer preferable alternatives to their forwards in midfield.

I think Agureo is essential as he is a 20+ goal man, a solid captain pick most weeks, i think going with neither is risky, I'm going with both for now very easy downgrade of needed

I definitely agree having only 1 of the big 2. Even none of them if you done your homework. Lukaku, firmino, sterling, Costa, are all showing that the high-mid price and low-premium can deliver

No Ibra is doable but Aguero is way too essential.

    23. bamberman
      • 11 Years
      9 years, 2 months ago

Aguero is essential given his ability and how good City look. Zlatan I can live without given his price and that United don't look a great attacking force yet. The money saved gives much more balance. And even owning both you can only have one captain a week so you're looking at making up an average of about 6ppg with the alternatives you get in.

      1. Nabs Kebabs
        • 14 Years
        9 years, 2 months ago

I don't think anyone is essential this season because rotating captain between the likes of Ibra, Haz, Sanchez could be a good option if you don't have Kun. That said, I agree with what your trying to say in that Kun is the most important as he is the most reliable captain and Ibra is probably more expendable.

My strikers the previous GW were Benteke - Costa - Lukaku. Can't say that I'm displeased with their performances (",)

      • 13 Years
      9 years, 2 months ago

I think it's a matter of wishful perception... A blank, a ban, a tough fixture, and you start looking elsewhere.

If Ibra and Kun keep up with the steady returns (and I guess they will), and the new 'reborns' Lallana, Sterling, etc, revert to scoring 1 in 4, you'll have Zlatan and Aguero.

But if you used your WC already, I'm sure you'll find 100s of reasons to convince yourself why Lukaku, Kane, Benteke, etc etc, are actually better than Kun/Ibra. 🙂

      horrible if he does well.

Bolasie @ 6m is gonna be a gem this season.

    Pleased to have him.

What was surprising was that he even managed to sneak in a bap over the defenders.

Where to do my hit this week...

Sanchez and Januzaj > Firmino and Eriksen....

Don't like losing Sanchez but Eriksen has Sunderland at home and Firmino has "those fixtures" after this week...Sanchez can return another day.

I know. Just short of being able to do Hazard and Januzaj > Fermino and Eriksen...i'd have preferred that tbh.

The question is... who would you rather have- a now in form Lukaku versus (a certainly less obliging) boro or Harry Kane (with dembele) vs this terrible Sunderland team

Lukaku (already have him. I would have to take out Benteke for Kane but he has that terrible Sunderland team the week after

They are not that terrible, they got blown away in an 11 minute spell but before that they were holding their own.

Chances are they will make sure that doesn't happen again at the weekend and an almighty bus will get parked at WHL.

What do you think of this WC for GW6
    Heaton
    Mcauley-Valencia-Baines
    Firminho-Cazorla-Hazard-Capoue-Antonio
Kun-Zlatan- stuani, 352 and 343 rotate if I dare to bench capoue again

    1FT, 3.4 ITB, WC played

    A) Rondon -> Benteke
    B) Barkley -> Antonio
    C) Both for -4 (Don't think I can do this as I have Souare as well)

I always had planned for it.

Easy for me. Not going to use the WC as well.

That's why I feel surprised when people say that there's no point planning a few GWs ahead.
