Scout Notes – Europa and Champions League – Wednesday

Manchester United cruise to victory while Leicester City somehow keep themselves in a tie of almost painful one-sidedness as the week’s European action continued…

Saint-Etienne 0 Manchester United 1 (0-4 on aggregate)

Henrikh Mkhitaryan steered United into the Europa League Round of 16 and then possibly limped out of EFL Cup final contention on a mostly drama-free night in France.

The Armenian put the tie to bed with a cute finish from a fine Juan Mata cross after 16 minutes, only to succumb to a hamstring problem nine minutes later that left Jose Mourinho in pessimistic mood post-match.

Responding to concerns over both Mkhitaryan and Michael Carrick, who was replaced by Bastian Schweinsteiger after 62 minutes, he said:

“(You) can be injured leaving your house, in the garden. There is always a risk. Not to have them both for the final is complicated. I don’t say they are definitely out. I just say what I feel. Hamstring or calf, I always think three days is no time.”

The French were unlucky to be three down after a fine performance at Old Trafford, but United were good value for their second-leg win, keeping the hosts at arm’s length despite playing the final 30 minutes with ten men when Eric Bailly picked up two yellow cards in quick succession.

Mkhitaryan has started the last seven matches in the league, gaining around 40,000 Fantasy managers in the process. But he’s only managed one goal and an assist in that time – and they both came in the 3-0 win at Leicester City.

Interest in United midfielders has been lukewarm for much of the season. Only Paul Pogba (9.2%) has a significant ownership base, whereas four defenders have at least 5.0% of FPL managers backing them, and David de Gea enjoys 33.8% support.

The fact remains, however, that United’s continued tilt at four competitions is compromising their players’ attractiveness as Fantasy assets.

With blanks in two of the next three Gameweeks and at least three matches – an FA Cup quarter-final and two Europa League Round of 16 ties – before the Gameweek 29 trip to Middlesbrough, there is little short-term Fantasy joy to be had from their squad.

At least the 3.2% of managers with Mkhitaryan in their teams can gain some comfort from the fact he has until March 4 to recover from that hamstring injury and take his place in the Gameweek 27 side to face Bournemouth.

That plum fixture had presented Zlatan Ibrahimovic as a key captain pick. However, yesterday’s announcement of a potential double Gameweek for Manchester City has now likely switched our priorities.

Many FPL managers will now be targeting a City asset for Gameweek 27 – most likely Sergio Aguero – reducing the need to retain Ibrahimovic as a captain choice for that round of matches. That will likely accelerate sales of the United striker ahead of Saturday’s deadline.

Manchester United XI: Romero, Young, Bailly, Smalling, Blind, Carrick (Schweinsteiger 62), Pogba, Fellaini, Mata (Rojo 64), Mkhitaryan (Rashford 25), Ibrahimovic.
Subs not used: de Gea, Martial, Lingard, Valencia.

Sevilla 2 Leicester City 1

Jamie Vardy’s first goal in nine matches kept Leicester in a Champions League tie during which they mostly struggled to be even the second-best side.

The striker fired home from an excellent Danny Drinkwater cross to secure a barely-deserved away goal, but goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel was the real Foxes’ hero on the night, saving a penalty and pulling off a string of fine stops to defy an utterly dominant Sevilla.

Claudio Ranieri made ten changes to the team that lost in the FA Cup at Millwall. Ahmed Musa was the only man to keep his place as the coach gambled on a 4-4-2 formation that was promptly over-run for the entirety of a wretched first-half.

Leicester only improved when Demarai Gray replaced Musa after the break, with the threat of the young winger, although sporadic, one of the few highlights of an increasingly woeful season.

The Foxes’ form – they’re on a run of five consecutive league defeats – and a fixture list that includes a Gameweek 28 blank while Arsenal are involved in the FA Cup quarter-finals makes their players unattractive Fantasy fodder.

Last season’s stand-out stars Vardy and Riyad Mahrez remain peripheral performers, the defence hasn’t kept a clean sheet since Gameweek 20 (and just two since Gameweek 7) and even a favourable five-match schedule from Gameweek 29 offers little prospect of points when a team is this badly out of kilter at both ends of the pitch.

Gray remains the one asset that could possibly turn the heads of FPL managers – should he finally cement a starting role.

Leicester City XI: Schmeichel, Simpson, Morgan, Huth, Fuchs, Albrighton (Amartey 88), Drinkwater, Ndidi, Musa (Gray 58), Mahrez, Vardy.
Subs not used: Zieler, Chilwell, King, Amartey, Okazaki, Gray, Benalouane.

Hmm, so of the FPL assets we're all now looking at for City, what do we reckon the prospects of rotation are given the fact they could have 5 games in 15 days or something mad like that? I had a bit of time before a meeting and thought about each in turn cos I'm sad like that, and my boss isn't around this morning so I had some time, so here are my thoughts on the matter:

Kun - surely the #1 striker with Jesus out, but surely also to be prioritised in finishing the job vs. Monaco? Nacho not registered in UCL which is another concern; would be play FA Cup, or would he start at least one of the league games? Kun is the player we'd all like to own I think, and if you do own him he is the automatic armband, but would we be disappointed?
Verdict: tough to know for sure, but will get the armband if you bring him in. Captain, but not triple captain would be my guess.

Sterling - Pep keeps talking about him, Sane and Jesus being the dynamic front 3 he wants to see. Surely will play the majority of the bigger matches - let's hope the PL is part of that - and be rested for Navas or someone of that ilk in the cup matches. Noted flat track bully to boot.
Verdict: probably the #1 midfield target at a very reasonable price.

Sane - burst into the team recently and looks very direct. Missed a good chance in their last premier league game (I know this cos I owned KdB at the time, who had put him through for a 1v1). Bit of an unknown quantity on some levels, but similar to Sterling in that we must be hoping he is going to be playing the PL and rested for the FA cup.
Verdict: intriguing differential over the more known quantity of Sterling - I'm certainly very tempted by him as a lot of my ML rivals have Raheem, but it's always going to be a gamble

KdB (also applies to Silva) - the ginger ninja was in my team from Jan 2 until when Lincoln beat Burnley, which is when Mane came in to replace him. Despite a couple of high points, owning him was generally a disappointment - he's gotten better in terms of the eye test this year, but he is not as involved in the goals and is suffering (like Silva) from a lot of "assisting the assister". When he did score points - and I did watch basically all of the games I owned him in I think - it was a lot to do with luck rather than a natural output of constant threat.
Verdict: avoid for me, I think he's playing too deep in the current formation to score the points he did last season when he was very much the fulcrum of the attack; he's now in the "quarterback" role for them, using his tidy play to keep them ticking over. On the plus side, he is likely to be playing the full 90 and has come in as the false 9 before - the bad part is, he did that vs. Burnley and also another time earleir on in the season (forget now) and he plays the Firmino role, setting up others and making space rather than scoring himself if he does do it. Tough, but I do think avoid.

Yaya: OH YAYA. I do love owning him, it brings so much nostalgia from seasons past. But I think gone are the days of the rampaging runs from the centre circle to the opponent's box to score. He's been sitting deep all season and, unlike under Mancini/Pellegrini, isn't flouting the tactical instructions like he used to. On pens, which is obviously something to bear in mind, but I don't think you'll get much else out of him.
Verdict: an OK option, but you're relying on the spot kicks. On the plus side, he's highly likely to play the full 90.

Defence/Keeper: Lols, you have to be kidding me!

Overall verdict: OK, City need to be covered. No question about that. DGW = get those guys in. But there's a lot of uncertainty due to fixture pile up and, because Chelsea look to be running away with the title, a sense that Pep will be prioritising the UCL.
I'll personally be getting Kun and probably captaining him, plus one of Sane/Sterling, but with eyes wide open to the fact it's a huge gamble - don't get too disappointed if you get only the one game + 30 mins out of whoever you bring in.

n.b. these are just my idle thoughts on the matter, don’t take them as a fact / alternative fact. Welcome views from all, especially any stats explorers and/or city fans to help guide the decision making

        Thanks mate! Idle thoughts!

Yeah I have Pieters as well, so I'm probably going to follow suit. Do fancy giving Yaya a final hurrah in an FPL team of mine, though. Depends if people in my ML sell Raheem this weekend

Rotation - fairly high for some/less so for other.
Aguero - I'll get him, doubt triple.
Sterling - maybe, but is at the cost of a GW28er or a hit.
        Sane - as above.
KDB - too deep for fpl points.
Yaya - too much going on next gw to consider
        Defence - no thanks.
Overall - 1 or 2 MCI for me. Bigger problem is weighing up against GW28/hits. And then whether to transfer Lukaku out/in (makes Sanchez back in simple but costs earlier transfer) or Costa/Ibra out (which also needs later transfer for Aguero out/Sanchez in or delays it).

          Hey MTP

Yeah that's basically the tl;dr of what I've written up, so totally agree with you.

Am going to go with 2, as it's irresistible. I have enough itb for Rondon -> Kun so I am lucky in that respect; think that others need to make a "hokey-cokey" with Kaku. Alli will probably be sacrificed for a midfielder, too.

Yep, my bad! Wish I could edit that!

Point still stands I think about him still being a threat in the "lesser" games, which might well include one of the prem games.

It's a slight plus for Aguero in FPL I guess, although marginal as Pep doesn't seem to rate Nacho

True but I'd prefer red arrow regret from captaining Aguero, over prioritising say Mawson & Snodgrass.

Lol, yeah I am thinking about it, but imo there's too much riding on it - my ML is full of bants and personal rivalries, plus money at stake. Fancy the optimal TC later on in the year on Sanchez over a dodgy one on Kun as it's such an important chip.

Hope to see you TCing 😉

And will bring in Aguero and Sterling. Maybe even Sane over Sterling. He just excites me and lots happening down that left side.

By the way Nacho can play in champions league. Because he's young he doesn't have to be named in the main squad...but he can still play them for sure.

I'll definitely get one of Agüero and Sterling, but would have to take a hit for the other.

            A— Eriksen (EVE) + 4 Points
            B— Sterling (sun, STK)

As you mentioned if Sterling only gets 90 + 30 minutes then it probably will not be worthwhile.

            Sterling
            Dropped from squad: 2
            Benched: 1
            Subbed off before 60': 2
            Subbed off after 60': 6
            Full 90: 14

            KDB
            Dropped from squad: 0
            Benched: 2
            Subbed off before 60': 1
            Subbed off after 60': 8
            Full 90: 13

            Silva
            Dropped from squad: 1
            Benched: 1
            Subbed off before 60': 1
            Subbed off after 60': 3
            Full 90: 17

            Sane
            Dropped from squad: 1
            Benched: 5
            Subbed off before 60': 0
            Subbed off after 60': 4
            Full 90: 4

Only included the games they were fit and available. In terms of reliability, I'd rank them:
            1. Silva
            =2. KDB

Brilliant reflections mate, I agree with your thoughts and conclusions!

Sterling, and possibly Sané also by this time, seem to be players that Pep values highly. I think he will give them plenty of gametime in both games, and then sub them off after 60 if City are winning. After Stoke City have a normal break of 1 week until Monaco. Not sure that rotation will hit as heavily as many fear of. Pep has found a winning way and Sterling and Sané are essential to that. Kun will also start both games imo, as he is starting to adapt more and more to Pep's style of play.

Every game in PL is important and Pep has learned the hard way that rotation won't make easy wins in PL. But then again, you never know with that man. He seems to act contrary to what media ask him to do. So if media asks if Aguero now is essential again, he will start benching him. Like a revolting youngster against his parents.

All guesswork but too many potential upsides to not get at least two City attackers!

Siggy in this week away to Chelsea? Do you regret the timing?

I have done Sanchez to Mané. Still have 1 FT so will get Lukaku. Maybe I will get Costa for Ibra for a hit, if I decide Costa as more likely to score more than 4 points than Ibra (SWA whu vs BOU blank). Who would you choose between Costa and Ibra, up until WC time? I want to keep Kane as he will be my differential.

Then in GW27 Kun and Sterling are coming in for Lukaku and Alli I guess. -4. Then GW28 Sterling and Kun out for Couts/WHU mid and Kaku. And after the blanks I will be more restrictive with my transfers up until WC/DGW.

Sorry for posting a wall of death 😉

Haha all good mate, appreciate your feedback each week!
I don't really regret it cos this was the only window to bring Siggy in, I'd be sitting on a -8 next week to do the changes I wanted, and my alternative is playing Pieters away to spurs. Clement was at Chelsea so hoping he can throw a spanner in the works! Put it this way, if Swansea do anything Siggy will get points I'm sure!

Yeah I also did Sanchez to Mane. Don't regret it for the reasoning in the post, though I could be very wrong about KdB, who went out for Siggy.

It depends if you have Chelsea or Spurs cover. Was thinking of bringing Costa in for Rondon for the -4, but I like Kane's fixtures more to the hit... But I'm going to give Rondon Bournemouth before changing him for Kun! I'd do Kane if you don't have more than 2 spurs.

Good plan! Rondon and Alli to Sterling and kun here, then kun for someone and Sterling out too, or maybe a defender in like Clyne for Pieters.

Haha you give a wall, you take a wall!

Fair enough! Ranieri sacked, sick news! Disgusting to be a manager in modern football...

I have no Chelsea attacking cover, which feels scary this weekend. Hazard in would make a mess with my plans. It is Costa or no one from Chelsea attack. But I think Ibra could easily score more than Costa...

I will only have Kane as spurs attacking cover from next week. If City will have a DGW I will take out Lukaku and keep Kane. Sounds wise?

Rondon should go big against crappy Bournemouth this week! Good differential.
Sounds like we have similar plans. Either we rise or fall together, like real bros lol ;-). Like last GW when we both captained Ibra, right?

Desperately need a good captain score this GW. Terrible captaincy scores for me this season.

I only have Alonso - I have Siggy to "contest" that game. Reasoning is either Alonso is in the points or, as I've said, if Swansea do anything then Siggy is probably getting me points!

Yeah I'd keep Kane. I like 3x Spurs home games with the blank in 28) in any situation!

Ugh yeah! Are you putting it on Kaku?? Do you have him yet? I am doing it. Hoping he means the game week is out of sight to my rival who has Kane and Walker, plus covers my Alli. Ugh. Going to be a bad Sunday!! Least I have Mane now.

Same here, and Chelsea will probably be grinding out 2 and 1 nil victories.

Waiting for pressers tomorrow, but most likely I will be getting Kaku in and (C) him. My gut says Mané though, but I don't dare to do that.

You far behind in your ML? I'm 70 points beyond but my rival has an awful team for the blanks/dgws.

I was planning for KdB in for Pedro for GW 27 to bench him in 28. Now leaning towards Sterling + Aguero depending on the team he puts out against Huddersfield

Which scores best here this week?

          A) Hazard (SWA), Costa (SWA), Capoue (WHU) + 4 points
          B) Hazard (SWA), Lukaku (SUN), Capoue (WHU) + 4 points
          C) Hazard (SWA), Costa (SWA) & Mane (lei)
          D) Hazard (SWA), Lukaku (SUN) & Mane (lei)
          E) Firmino (lei), Lukaku (SUN) & Costa (SWA)

Hudderfield victory would be less exciting for FPL, but then again better for me and many on here as we've been planning getting as close an xi as possible out for 28!

I'd be saving it here, though tbh you'll make up the points next week.

Is there a way, if you save FT, that you can do the 'hokey-cokey' transfer of Kaku -> Kun -> Kaku between 26-28?

Do we think Eriksen -> Sterling is worth -4 for next week?

Even though Sterling playing two games (Assuming he does) technically makes it a -2, I can still imagine Eriksen outscoring him?

I'm taking Alli (my only spurs man) out for Sterling / Sane if the DGW comes to pass. Just have to, 2 games is better than 1 (though obviously don't extend that logic to bringing in Fernandinho or something!!)

Same kind of situation. Think I am going to WC to take advantage of DGW27 and set myself up with 9-10 for GW28. Ideally I'd like to save my WC for BB in 37 but I fear I'll really fall behind over the next few weeks if I don't do something drastic. Not a popular idea on here but fairly set on it atm.

There haven´t been any price changes since Sunday... Very strange indeed... Maybe people are just not making any transfers at the moment... I think Sanchez might not rise tonight, however I wouldn't bet on it... I made the switch last night because there was no reason to wait any longer either...

                Mini-league rival has Crouch.
With my luck, he will probably outscore Kun in DGW 27.

Read somewhere that a lot of fans think he is best in the hole with Carroll up front. I guess at least with Carroll out there is an extra place in the team available

Hey guys love some help with this

                  Jaku
                  Walker Williams Brunt
                  Alli Philips Mane Capoue Eriksen
                  Lukaku Giroud

Foster Pieters Amat Ibra 1 FT 2.5 ITB

                  26 > Sanchez/Giroud > Mane/Costa (11 players)
                  27 > Ali/Costa> Snoddy/Aguero (-4) (3 DGW)
                  28 > Amat> Maguire (8 players)

Any other choice than getting Costa for 1 week? I have only done Sanchez to Mane this week.

I'll just capt Sanchez to minimise any damage. Loads won't even own, or at least captain Aguero

                      Next week I can do...

                      Eriksen -> T.Carroll
                      A.Carroll -> Aguero

Will still have Alli for some Spurs coverage.

Did anyone mentioned Cabalero? 2 CS in 3 games, 4.7mil and MID and STO for DGW. Also will have at least one more DGW later.

I've got much more pressing matters than a gk spot.

I'm considering Heaton -> Cab for a hit. Could pay for itself straight away and he has nice fixtures from 32 onwards.
