The Weekend Team News

Romelu Lukaku recovers from a calf problem in time for Everton’s Goodison Park clash with Sunderland. Andy Carroll remains a major doubt as West Ham travel to Watford, while Middlesbrough have a string of injury concerns in defence ahead of a trip to Crystal Palace.

Romelu Lukaku is available for Everton’s home match with Sunderland after recovering from a calf complaint. Ronald Koeman has also confirmed that Kevin Mirallas and James McCarthy are back in contention, with all three returning to training earlier in the week.

David Moyes has revealed that Jordan Pickford is back in training for Sunderland’s Goodison trip, though went on to say “we’ll have to see if he’s ready”. Steven Pienaar is doubtful due to a calf problem, while Jan Kirchhoff remains sidelined, despite stepping up his recovery with a return to training earlier in the week.

Middlesbrough have concerns over a trio of defenders for their trip to Crystal Palace. Antonio Karanka has confirmed that Antonio Barragan remains on the sidelines, while both George Friend and Calum Chambers have failed to train and are set to be assessed.

Andy Carroll has yet to train ahead of West Ham’s match with Watford and is a big doubt for the Vicarage Road showdown. Aaron Cresswell, Arthur Masuaku and Andrew Ayew all back in contention.

Craig Cathcart, Sebastian Prodl and Valon Behrami are all doubtful for the Hornets. Juan Zuniga has recovered from illness, though Costel Pantilimon, Nordin Amrabat and Christian Kabasele remain sidelined.

Sean Dyche is mulling over his Burnley midfield options, with both Steven Defour and Johann Berg Gudmundsson sidelined through injury for the trip to Hull City, while Jeff Hendrick serves the last of a three-match suspension.

Simon Francis is expected to be ruled out of Bournemouth’s visit to the Hawthorns, while Eddie Howe is set to make a late decision on the fitness of Jack Wilshere.

Tony Pulis was typically vague this morning ahead of West Brom’s clash with the Cherries – the Baggies boss revealed his squad have “one or two niggles” but failed to elaborate.

Ki Sung-yeung, Nathan Dyer and Jefferson Montero are all ruled out through injury as Swansea City make their way to league leaders Chelsea.

All this and more has now been updated in the Team News section ahead of tomorrow’s deadline. Keep an eye on our official Twitter Stream for breaking news – as the day unfolds, we will issue updates from Friday’s press conferences and refresh our Team News page accordingly to keep you informed.

Left behind on old post, so posting again....

I am surprised that some (or many) people here are so pessimistic on Aguero. Clearly he was Pep's first choice before Jesus came.

    GW 1 : 90 mins
    GW 2 : 82 mins
    GW 3 : 87 mins
    GW 4 : Suspended
    GW 5 : Suspended
    GW 6 : 90 mins
    GW 7 : 90 mins
GW 8 : Benched, just returned from injury in internationals
    GW 9 : 90 mins
    GW 10 : 90 mins
    GW 11 :89 mins
    GW 12 : 85 mins
    GW 13 : 88 mins
    GW 14 : 90 mins
    GW 15 : Suspended
    GW 16 : Suspended
    GW 17 : Suspended
    GW 18 : Suspended
    GW 19 : 90 mins
GW 20 : Benched, just returned from injury
    GW 21 : 90 mins
    GW 22 : 90 mins
From GW 23 : Jesus started

From the above starts, it;s clear that Aguero started every PL game before Jesus came, except when he just returned from injury. Now that Jesus is injured and out of the equation, it's clear that Aguero is first choice. Just to add to it, Ileanacho didn't play even 1 minute in Man City's last 6 games, which indicates that he has fallen way down the pecking order.

Some also think that Pep can play a false 9. But Pep played a false 9 only once this season (when Aguero was available), and that was against Barcelona in round 3 of Champions League in October 20, which many believe was because Pep didn't want Barcelona to dominate possession.

    Hope this helps 🙂

It doesn't help because it's wrong and misleading. Especially the title (although I guess you didn't write that).

Let's take GW8 for example; you say "benched, just returned from injury". No. Benched because Pep dropped him from the team.

Aguero started on 7/10 v Peru and played 73 minutes. He then started on 11/10 v Paraguay and played the full 90 minutes. Evidently not injured then. And Pep then benched him in GW8 (15/10) by choice. He wasn't injured or he wouldn't have come on for the last 40 minutes in that game, would he?

Everyone assumed at the time that the 15/10 benching was because Kun was being saved for the Barcelona game on 19/10. A reasonable enough idea, except Pep then benched him for the Barcelona game as well. He came on for the last 15 minutes.

GW8 in your list should therefore read DROPPED. Plain and simple.

OK... GW20 you again say "benched, just returned from an injury". What injury was that, then? It must have been one that only you knew about. He hadn't been injured, he had been suspended and had played 90 minutes in the first game after the suspension. In GW20 he was once again DROPPED. Or "rotated" or "rested" if you prefer those euphemisms. But there was no injury in sight and he played the 2nd half of that game.

It is so, so easy for people to stick their head in the sand and explain away what doesn't suit what they want to believe. And that's what you have done in this post I'm afraid.

Personally I think Aguero will more likely than not start both games in GW27 as it happens. But I wouldn't attempt to try to convince myself or anyone else that there's no doubt or risk about it. Because there clearly is. From 1/3 to 19/3, City should have 6 games in 18 days including Monaco in the CL R16 2nd Leg and Liverpool at the Etihad. Not to imagine we'll see some rotation in those 6 games (and probably more than "some") would indeed be ostrich-like.

And that is before we even start to look at how Pep has changed Aguero's game by expecting him to do different things. We can't sign last season's Aguero playing in a Pellegrini team built around him. We can only sign this season's Aguero playing in a Guardiola team that demands quite different things of him.

Caveat Emptor. There's always a risk with Pep and it doesn't melt away just because it suits us to salivate over a City DGW and to pretend that the doubt has gone away. 😕

I do agree. I will most likely bring Aguero in for GW27. But I'll do it knowing there's a risk involved and I'll think more than twice before I use my TC on him.

        Hello Huth.

This sentence was posted by FFS :

"Aguero started both matches (in internationals) but had to be replaced after 73 minutes against Peru after picking up a slight adductor injury."

Aguero came off after 73 mins against Peru on 7/10 after picking up an injury. Then he plays 90 mins on 11/10. But...

Aguero plays 73 mins then gets injured on Thursday.....He then plays 90 mins on Tuesday......then he has to take a long flight from South America to England. Isn't it understandable? Don't you think he would have been overplayed if he started in GW 8 on Saturday, and that there was a higher chance of him getting an injury than usual if he started? Wasn't fatigue an issue with him?

Therefore, Pep didn't drop him by choice, he was FORCED to drop him.

        Now coming to GW 20....

Pardon me, I mistook 'fatigue' as 'injury' again.

Pep had this to say in his post match press conference in GW 20 :

"He played 90 minutes after four games out and I did not consider him playing 90 minutes again after two days.”

He was handed a 4-match suspension in GW 14 on December 3. He played no competitive match for around a month, and then would you expect him to start 2 matches in 3 days? That's why he played 90 mins against Liverpool on 31 Dec, and was benched against Burnley on Jan 2.

Once again, Pep didn't drop him by choice, he was FORCED to drop him.

Therefore, my whole post is CORRECT.

Your original post is top quality AA33, with just a small caveat that there have been a couple of times Aguero has been rested due to fatigue / not up to full match fitness / possibly dropped

Considering Ruth_NZ did say that he thinks Aguero will start both games i think you're both on the same page for the most part. Triple Captain might be a bit tricky though ..

FFS is not an authority on whether a player is injured or not. If the player completes 90 minutes after a so-called injury then they are clearly not injured any more (if they ever were).

So, Guardiola wasn't "forced" to drop Aguero. He chose to. Same as he chose to drop him against Barcelona (which is just as relevant but you passed over).

Call it "forced" if you want - people stretch language in all kinds of odd ways nowadays. But in that case you had better hope Pep doesn't feel "forced" to rest him in GW27. Which is really my point - Guardiola has a track record where this kind of thing is concerned. 😉

By 'forced', I mean that any player would have been benched in those scenarios.

              Saturday 31st Dec (GW19):
              Bravo
              Otamendi Kolorov -Stones- -Zabaleta-
              Toure Fernandinho
              -Silva- KDB Sterling
              -Aguero-

              Monday 2nd Jan (GW20):
              Bravo
              Otamendi Kolorov *Sagna* *Clichy*
              Toure Fernandinho
              *Navas* KDB Sterling
*Iheanacho* (Aguero was subbed on at HT)

The players he was 'FORCED' to bench were Stones, Zabaleta, Silva & Aguero.

Aguero & Silva came on at HT in GW20 and were clearly not injured.

He was benched in GW 8 due to fatigue, whereas his benching was tactical and not due to fatigue (for the reason see my original post). So unlike you say, these two benchings were not 'relevant'.

Pardon me, I mistook 'fatigue' as 'injury'. Aguero was benched in GW 8 and 20 due to fatigue, and those benchings are normal as to any other player.

Other day my mouse failed and I had to use the touch pad and squiggly knob on the keyboard (I guess there's probably a correct name for it). Took me 30 minutes to do something that would usually have taken 5. 🙁

Manchester United could be forced to play two fixtures in three days after the Premier League failed to reschedule one of their games in hand for next week.

The Premier League is yet to announce the specific dates and times for clubs' fixtures in April or May and, depending on their participation in the Europa League, United could ease the congestion by requesting to have a weekend game staged on a Friday night in order to play a possible third game in hand on a Monday evening. If United advance in the Europa League then they will be limited to a best case scenario of Saturday-Monday games.

Or a DGW 38. United played their last game after the season officially ended last season (though the circumstances were very unusual). But it happened so it is theoretically possible.

    A) Rose (back from injury soon)
    B) Friend (back from injury soon)

Thoughts on my GW26-28 plans (if Man City have a DGW)?

    GW26: Sanchez ---> Mane
    GW27: Kane ---> Aguero
    GW28: Aguero + Pieters ---> Striker with a game + Mawson (-4)
-Gives me 11 players this GW

    - Other potential moves would be Ibra ---> Costa and/or Sterling in, but it would cost hits and would mean I don't have 11 for GW28

Currently got 9 players for GW28, and trying to get Aguero in is going to mess up my budget far to much. Got Grant in goal, but probably just going to go Dele > Sterling. Then can use 1FT and a -4 to get up to full quota of 11 for GW28
