Speculating on the Fantasy Premier League player prices is a time-honoured summer past time that resurfaced this week with a community article launching a value prediction game.

Elsewhere, our scribes also take a look at 2016/17’s Gameweek 1 successes and failures to help us prepare for the new season kick-off, while our hot topic posters are shopping for potential bargains.

Blunderous goalkeepers and penalty box nuisances at set-pieces are the focus of our Members’ tables, while we round off with further good news about out community’s performance in the Euro U21 Fantasy game.

The Community Articles

Achieving a flying start in Fantasy Football can be tough, as my community article looking back at last season’s opening day results highlights. This focuses on the 2016/17 Gameweek 1 Scout Picks to find out to what extent we can rely on fixtures, previous season’s form and the summer friendlies, to hit the ground running.

The Fantasy Premier League game launches come the week of July 10, with the prices eagerly anticipated. Ahead of that revelation, Pundit of Punts has created a player value prediction game to see who in the community can second-guess the FPL price setters.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topics

Some of the most sought-after assets in the FPL player list will be budget assets – both in defence and midfield. Not only do they free up funds for high scoring premium players but they can also be lucrative acquisitions in their own right, as 4.5 priced Etienne Capoue of Watford demonstrated last season with four goals in his opening five fixtures.

We asked who you think will be next season’s budget-friendly midfield gems, while Stephen T joined in the bargain hunting with his discussion on three-way defender rotations.

With four goals in his previous campaign, West Brom defender Craig Dawson looks an enticing early prospect. However, with a likely price tag of 5.0 next season those who prefer an uber cheap defence may be reluctant to invest more, according to hot topic on rearguard spending.

Another popular defender likely to be priced at around the 5.0 mark is Nathan Ake, who has sealed a move from Chelsea back to Bournemouth, where he excelled last season. However, Ludo believes that it is one of his new team-mates who could benefit most from that transfer.

Pep is pondering spending even more on his defence, with likely 6.0 priced players from last season’s premium backlines on his early watchlist.

Meanwhile, Mark asked for your views on unearthing budget strikers, with those at the promoted sides, Newcastle United, Brighton & Hove Albion and Huddersfield Town, likely locations to start hunting.

With 25 goals conceded at home last season, Crystal Palace could offer an immediate reward for those investing in the Terriers’ budget attack when they visit Selhurst Park in Gameweek 1. We asked whether you are backing the Eagles to soar or falter next season as well as advice for their new manager Frank De Boer.

We also canvassed your views on  Everton’s prospects – another side managed by a Dutch manager, Ronald Koeman.

To help assess the possibility of early attacking and defensive returns, Bedknobs and Boomsticks has been dusting down his abacus out to discover who is most likely to find the net and keep clean sheets over the opening five Gameweeks.

Finally, Niemi was on hand to deliver his latest thoughts on the best players to consider transferring in for the next set of fixtures in Norwegian top flight game, Fantasy Eliterserien.

To view all our discussions please visit our Hot Topics page. We are also still keen to hear from you about how this can be further developed.=

The Members Tables

To add further information to my community article on flying starts, I’ve made a table looking at the underlying attacking statistics of  last season’s opening day heroes.

Mynjdusta has been taking a look at calamitous goalkeepers from last season to find out who was responsible for the most clangers between the posts. In addition, he’s also examined 2016/17’s leaping salmons, who prospered at set-pieces.

If you’re a member and are yet to get to grips with the custom statistics tables, you can view this movie for an explanation of how they work. Also, remember to tag them so that people can find the tables with ease.

The Community Tournaments

Our community’s league in the Fantasy Euro Under 21 FFScout league claimed the top rank, with Krokstad pipping Ryan Seechurn at the league’s summit by just three points.

If you are running a community tournament and would like the latest scores included in future Community Round-ups, please email us summary of the current leaders and a link to your league, spreadsheet or head to head competition, at jonty@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk.

Pre season is about to get underway when we start to gather some vital clues as to how Premier League teams will set up next season and find out who the emerging stars are.

But for every Michu or Capoue, who can take good pre-season form into the new season, there are also a Graham or Boselli lying in wait to disappoint us.

What are your top tips on getting the most out of pre-season?

My traditional pre-season error is to take a punt on that 5.0 mid who was played "in the hole" for several friendlies in a row - only to remain rooted firmly to the bench and losing me 0.1 per week until my first wildcard.

      1) Take note of the manager comments before and after games.
      2) Put less weight on earlier pre-season games as they are often used for fitness purposes
      3) Take note of any players mentioning targets (goal scoring generally) they have been set for the season ahead
      4) Don't assume that because a player has played a lot of pre-season minutes they are nailed to start
      5) Put less weight on pre-season fixtures against weaker sides (e.g. Championship / League One / League Two)
      6) Take account of travel time in pre-season - it is often better to pick players who have not travelled far in pre-season
      7) Have a look at the league table since February (e.g. if the league started in Feb 2017) as that momentum (positive or negative) is usually taken into the next PL season

I like the form since last Feb part, look at teams late season form like WBA and off the top of my head Watford. Not promising.

Don't forget the new manager effect though with Watford and Crystal Palace. WBA you need to ignore as we know Pulis' record after reaching 40 points.

Keep a solid eye on the 3 promoted teams, they've all got potential cheap mids to bring in, but I think they need atleast a decent pre-season to be considered

I just keep an eye on injuries, oop players and min.budget bench fodder; Diomande, Capoue, Amat, Kingsley were quite good to start with last season for early wildcarders. The rest of my team won't really be affected by preseason, except maybe a Redmond-style oop punt

Going to be checking which teams have had a good pre season schedule.. not too much traveling nor too difficult/easy etc.

Then also- which sides are looking settled or playing well.

Will definitely be considering all this when selecting which players to go with from the start.

Team Pre Season form v Team Pre Season Schedule v Pre Season Player Form v Fixture Difficulty.

Going to try and fit in plenty of reliables but also plenty of guys who are expected to start strongly or at least have a decent chance of doing so.

When the game launches I'm going to look at a possible 4-5-1. This should allow attacking defenders, premium midfielders and Kane in attack.

A big stumbling block will be finding two forwards who get decent game time for my bench.

I think he said it Virg...only really fancies Kane so going heavy on mids and perhaps the attacking wingbacks who are arguably equivalent to a 5.5/6m nailed midfielder who can get you clean sheets too.

I really want the attacking full backs that cost around 6 million, they are outstanding value.

I have so many midfield options I already like and they have become more important now many teams play just 1 up front.

Decent forwards are normally so expensive just one premium captain could be enough for me.

Are there any points per million of initial price tables that anyone has made for last season?

      1. firetog
        • Fantasy Football Scout Member

        9 years, 10 days ago

I did some analysis based on 4 price bands per position (3 for GK) and the average points from last season. I wrote some VB script that compared every possible combination for all 12 line up options. I also included lines up where any value of striker could be chosen and also where one striker was a minimum price. It compared over 104 million combinations and gave me the optimal player price ranges for each line up configuration.
The optimal line up was 5 3 2x where x meant one of the strikers was minimum price. Next best was 4 4 2x.
There wasn't a significant difference between all line ups only about a 3 point weekly difference. I believe the only real flaw in the exercise was the inability to take into consideration rotation.

I've seen a lot of formations bandied around, who people are getting etc, but ultimately it depends on the prices. No-one is gonna play 5-4-1. If there are 5 5mil Kieran Trippier's potentially out there then you sign them all and play 3/4.

4-4-2 has never been a staple FPL formation, yet the emergence of Conte's influence has created these attacking wing backs, I could see viability there, if the players are available. If you have an expensive defence from the off good luck to you, but be prepared to WC GW2.

I am planning 3-5-2. 4-4-2 could actually work though. Wingbacks classified as defenders can surely outscore other attacking options. The 7th attacker normally costs 5-6 mil. Unless we find a 'Josh King',some defender can surely outscore that attakcer.

It might happen but that wouldn't be my expectation picking a wingback....do expect better scoring than a similarly priced mid though. Even then formation only gets you so far...still need to pick the right man.

        1. _Greg
          • 16 Years

If you could get a goal assist wing back for say a million less than the midfield points equivalent then I'd say get three, 2 cheapies, 3 big hitters in mid, one mahrez wc n one cheapie, 2 premium strikers (Kane Jesus) and one mid priced (Benteke/Llorente).

Sigh. Looks like it's boring 3-4-3 for me then!

This is exactly why people are promoting 4-4-2. There's no way you will be able to afford that front three and three big hitting mids but getting a good 5.0-5.5 defender for 2m less than Benteke could potentially fund the other big hitters.

            1. _Greg

absolutely right. depends on the pricing. If Jesus is 9.5m then he's still a premium option. Sane could be cheap. certain mis-valuations could allow us an OP (over-powered) team.

I generally think if prices allow I will be playing a 4-5-1

I want players like Alonso, Walker, Milner and Rose more than the similar priced midfield options like Barkley, Redmond, Lallana and Zaha.

So many good attacking midfield options who are on set pieces and play in the number 10 role.

Kane up front is the ultimate big hitter in my eyes and a good captain option every GW.

I agree on Kane, almost guaranteed consistency. He's simply good at shooting, from anywhere! Do you think there will be 5mil starting Strikers to put on your bench, is the 5th defender a 4m?

That could be the problem, finding the 5 Million forwards who are going to get decent minutes. I'm happy with a 4.5m 5th defender.

4-4-2 could work if Milner, Kolašinac, Alonso and Alves (if he signs for City) are fairly priced.

5 defenders does work but it isn't optimal. Have been testing it for 2 seasons now as a side project:

      https://fantasy.premierleague.com/a/entry/990428/history

Both seasons finished in top 16k. All about value and good timing of double ups.

Of the 10m+ strikers, only Kane appeals to me. I'm minded to go for him, one mid-price option (Defoe) and a cheap one (Deeney).

That way I could get City's Sanchez and a string of 8-9m midfielders and still afford a decent defence.

Another thing just remembered to mention when choosing your inital squad make up is...be flexible.

5m left in the bank when choosing your squad? no problem. you can make the jump to almost anyone with that.

Is one premium defender likely to hit the ground running? probably yes, so choose one, if you get the wrong one it's an easy switch. (I might start with Kompany)

Again, is one premium mid gonna be on fire? probably, yes. just choose one.

Look at blocks of pricing. are there a lot of viable options priced similarly say, 5 midfielders around 9m and strikers around 10m? How you gonna get these without taking multiple hits?

Plan B is the wonderful GW2 WC, I think i've always done better using it there! Be creative if you like! just have the humility to WC GW2 and don't ruin your season by being stubborn! Fantasy managers shouldn't be biased as well of course.

    1. Epic Fail
      • 15 Years
      9 years, 10 days ago

I don't believe in flexibility. Get the best team you can regardless. If that means you might have to take a hit to move things around then so be it. You should more than make up for that hit with all the points you got from not worrying about being flexible.

Agree - leaving 5.0m spare budget can work wonders if you have the discipline to do it... Even more so if you can bank a FT & get in the 2x what look like essential players for the start of Gw3.

    3. I Member
      • 10 Years
      9 years, 10 days ago

I might try to leave 0.5m in the bank if I can so that I don't have to worry about a rise or two pricing me out of someone in GW2 but that's about it. Personally I would never WC in GW2. A bad GW1 doesn't mean those players will fail again the next week. Plans change but I always aim to hold my transfer after the first week. If I need to reshuffle some things after GW2 I can make 3 transfers for -4.

I'd love to construct a perfect squad of 15 and still have 5m in the bank, but I'm never going to do that. If I had 1m itb I'd surprise myself. MY intention is to have a 4th MID priced around 8m to make it easy to make an unexpected purchase.

If people are gonna drop a premium attacker and midfielder in favour of expensive backline, you could easily have 5 mil left.

I've seen a pattern where players who get off to a good start tend to sustain it for at least 5-6 weeks. do your own analysis this season, see if you agree or not.

Kind of worried but hopefully it's reflected in his price, and having a good squad will be backup for games where he's dropped... Can always shift him on after a few weeks if he's not doing the business... But could be a great bargain if he nails down a place based on his performances at the end of last year. Hopefully pogba is in same price bracket as a potential replacement. If things don't go well!

I'm looking at De Bruyne, Pogba and Pedro. Preseason will be key for choosing our City assets. Risk of rotation putting me off Sane atm but if he looks nailed I'll get him instead of KDB and spend the extra elsewhere.

Even if King isn't reclassified as a forward, I doubt he will be the lucrative option he was last season, with Defoe poaching his goals. Sane could be good providing Sanchez doesn't end up at Man City, but if Sanchez does go I will likely be ignoring both until we see the trends in Pep's rotation policies.

Where will Ibrahimovic end up now that he has confirmed his departure from United?

Pity he did not come to Manchester a few years earlier. He made a huge impact on the team and the fans last season and he will be missed.

    BREAKING NEWS

Chelsea have signed goalkeeper Willy Caballero.

The 35-year-old was a free agent after his contract with Manchester City expired. He looks set to act as Thibaut Courtois' deputy after Asmir Begovic's departure to Bournemouth.

Southampton should sell VVD. Is he as good as the pundits say he is? Lovren and Fonte have hardly done well since they left. Arguably it is the way that Southampton set up defensively as opposed to their individuals that makes them solid. Stephens and Yoshida did well after VVD got injured and Southampton have just signed Bednarek as well.

BREAKING SKY FF NEWS: Salah will be priced at £9.4m in Sky FF next season.

Very underpriced and first name in my Sky team.
Coutinho Firmino & Mane were 10.5m+ last season.

I've done well them passed 3 seasons and that's with missing deadlines and (c) swaps.. It's a welcome change from Fpl where I go hit crazy but in Sky I'm restricted to the 40 transfers for the season

Hardly underpriced at this stage as we have no idea how Pool will set up when transfer dust settles, no idea how they will fare with addition of CL and most importantly no idea how Salah will fare in premiership when he actually will be meant to play week in week out.

He will be very under priced compared to Coutinho and Mane for sure i expect around 11m for those two.

Firmino likely to be a forward

Also i suspect Sky will be out this week or next - has been in previous seasons

It's still a risk when you don't even know if he'll be a regular starter in the PL. In contrast, you know that not only will Siggy start every game, but 90% of Swansea's midfield points will come via him.

If it is one thing new i would like to see in the coming fpl season it would be fpl towers doing away with £.5m player value increments.

Loads of players that are not here nor there and it would be much fairer imo.

Almost certainly, but it will take Pep a few weeks to establish exactly what his optimum starting XI will be. Doesn't help for our GW1 selections - might do by the time we wildcard!

          (Same for Liverpool's strikeforce)

Isn't that what pre-season is for? I'm sure Pep will have a fair idea who his best 11 will be by GW1. He has all pre-season to mess around with it. However Sanchez coming in after the season starts , then it is a problem.

              • 13 Years

Not necessarily. Pre-season is often an opportunity to bed in new signings and try out youngsters who don't go on to play much of a role in the PL campaign.

        21st May, Pep:

‘He will be here next season. Happy? Good. Perfect. How many times have I answered that question about Sergio and Vincent Kompany. I am not repeating. They are players for Manchester City and will be at Manchester City next season. We have to provide him with better solutions to not only score more goals, but he has done his job really well.’

Silva is City's best player at the moment. No chance he will be reduced to an impact sub. He's also the only one out of KdB, Bernardo and Silva that has shown that he masters playing centrally.

The one fly in the ointment is the CL. If they get all the way to the final, how much will that impact their PL campaign? Last 2 seasons the PL champions didn't even qualify for any European competition.

    4. diesel001
      • 9 Years

If there is one thing that the PL has shown is that constant rotation does not win you the title. You want a settled XI and keep it tight defensively. The PL is not like the other European leagues where there are dominant squads who have advantages which are perpetuated by the league system (effectively monopolies or duopolies).

I am vying towards Utd as Mourinho knows how to manage a squad, keep it tight in defence and will do better in his second season.
