The Numbers Game – Leicester City

Our series of pre-season members’ articles continues with a look at the dethroned champions Leicester City.

To open, we check out the team performance levels in a bid to spot any trends or improvements, then move to analyse their main performers with a view to assessing their key targets ahead of the new season.

The Foxes displayed little of the credentials that helped them win the title under Claudio Ranieri in 2015/16. Indeed, they were among the relegation candidates before the Italian was eventually replaced by Craig Shakespeare by Gameweek 26.

They ultimately finished in twelfth spot – only 10 points clear of the drop zone – and found the net on just 48 occasions, which was the tenth most prolific scoring record in the top-flight.

That compared very poorly to their previous season’s output, where the King Power outfit scored 68 times – the third-highest tally – on their way to the crown.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Leicester players proved to be over valued last season after failing to replicate their title winning campaign.

With price drops likely and new recruits, which Leicester players are you most likely to keep an eye on.

Would a cheaper Vardy be of interest?

    What of Harry Maguire?

Can Gray kick on as a strong asset and regular starter?

And what of Mahrez – if he goes to Arsenal would you still be interested in him as a Gunner? Or only as a Fox?

Worth noting that Leicester have an awful early run including visits to ManUtd and Arsenal and hosting Chelsea and Liverpool in their first six.

It eases off in GWK 7 though when they are away to Bournemouth and Swansea as well as host West Brom. That looks like a good time to gather out first 6 GWK knowledge and invest in Leicester.

I'll be monitoring Gray, always liked him and hoping he gets a run.

Vardy will still be about 8.5 I'd have thought maybe a touch too much.

Didn't own a Leicester player at any point last season, have to hope the prices drop a bit nearer the 15/16 levels at which point I'll consider the usual suspects. Probably be worth a go this season with no European competition and a levelling off of expectations.

Maguire looks to become an option at some point in the season. I think they'll improve their defensive record this season and he's always got that goal threat. Gray could hopefully come into the reckoning if Mahrez leaves. Always looked like a threatening player that deserves to be playing regularly.

      Absolutely avoiding at first.

Will keep an eye on Maguire, Vardy (he was great for me for a few weeks in the latter part of last season), and Albrighton (who had a purple patch at the end). Was this just a nice bit of form for Albrighton or a sign of increased FPL output? I will use the first 6 weeks to assess.

Mahrez hasn't been good for 12 months.

What will Shakespeare change? He will play the team and tactics we are used to.

      Schmeichel
      Maguire Huth Morgan Fuchs
      Ndidi Drinkwater
      Gray Okazaki Albrighton
      Vardy

Mahrez looks to be on his way out. Only Maguire as an option for me.

Possibly - Okazaki seemed to be a bit deeper than Vardy, but further forward than Albrighton.

Main player i'm looking at is Chillwell. If he comes in at 4.5 & nails down a spot in LB or LWB he could be gold. Great attacking threat.

I reckon so, Chillwell on the rise, Fuchs on the decline. Or we see Lei revert to a 3-5-2 & Chillwell plays LWB, then he is a really good option.

Harry Maguire certainly interests me if/when he nails down a spot in the 1st team.
Vardy@£8/8.5 will be back in play and would be a factor once again.

Your very own Wilfred Ndidi delivered on his promising stats towards the end of last season and could be a great enabler and could be a real bargain.

Anyway you would be a brave manager to invest heavily in Leicester from the get go given their fixtures,so the best policy might be to wait and see and invest when their fixtures get better.

Vardy and Maguire are interesting, yes.

Mahrez at Arsenal too if not too expensive - say 8.5 max

As you say, we have the luxury of keeping our distance and assessing them in the fist 6 GWs. As well as Maguire - if he's allowed to start after ousting Huth or Morgan, Albrighton might kick on. Right now, I'm not really considering any Fox.

Another point is with Southampton and Palace filling their managerial vacancies with inspired choices - full of technical and tactical nous, it rather exposes Leicester's appointment of Shakespeare as somewhat shallow. Even at 15/16 prices I wouldn't be excited until I see the Foxes holding their own in the PL.

    1. Foozeball
      • 7 Years

Shakespeare was initially on an interim basis. He was given the permanent job after Leicester's (rather suspicious) complete 180 upon his appointment as caretaker manager

      1. Foozeball
        • 7 Years

The results speak for themselves, so the appointment of Shakespeare, while not exactly an inspired appointment, is justified

Yeah, I'm saying it was an uninspired appointment. He won't inject fresh ideas and i think they'll struggle.

I think his biggest problem will be with his players. If they could turn on Ranieri in the manner they did then they could turn on anybody. I've never seen such an utter kick in the bllx in football as what they did to him. Disgusting.

            • 7 Years

It would be a shame if the players turn on Shakespeare the second he tries to introduce new, younger blood into the squad. Okazaki, Fuchs, Huth, and Morgan are all over 30 and can't last forever. Huth and Morgan especially started showing their age last season

        2. diesel001
          • 7 Years

Leicester don't have the personnel to inject fresh ideas. Their passing is poor and they have no cutting edge. They are very effective long-ball merchants. But the refs know Vardy's penalty winning tricks now so he won't get as many. Will opposition be prepared to defend deep to nullify the threat?

Heavy investment in academies. They have good and experienced coaches in almost every single age group, but still manages to make the game enjoyable for everyone which makes it possible for possible "late bloomers" to make it too.

Easiest way to tell is that this place will go berserk 😉

Also, hitting F5 is not necessarily the way to go anyway, may well be refreshing an error page rather than the one that will be updated.

First, they'll take the current site down a while in advance so you won't be able to log in (surprised it hasn't happened already actually), the day of launch is when the player price list will be updated - usually only a short while before actual site goes live. This is the real key: https://fantasy.premierleague.com/player-list/

Also, a lot of chatter on here regarding various teams to assess for the first 6 gameweeks?

Does the tactic look to be plan for the first 6 then wildcard when the fixtures change? Rather than normally gameweek 3?

I think 6 weeks is just the habitual standard because that's how far the ticker always used to extend by default. Don't know if there's a consensus about when to wildcard yet, I hope not, that feels a bit crazy!

Yeah, considered that. The fixtures for United, Spurs, Saints, WBA in particular look amazing for defensive returns. Something I'm considering, but will of course depend on prices everywhere.

Can we trust WBA though? Not good for clean sheets last season.

Not overly. But 3 CS over first 7 seems realistic. Throw in maybe one attacking return and I'd take that. Would be hard pressed to find a budget mid/forward to get anywhere close to those returns.

CSs myth is a myth I think. Someone compared first 5 games to second 5 games and found no difference (except slightly fewer CSs in second 5 over the last 5 or so seasons). Whether you trust these findings or not, it still seems a little shortsighted to think cheap mids/forwards will outscore premium defs at the beginning of the season, especially when it's harder to choose a stable, safe, cheap attacking option.

        1. Respect My Authoritah
          • 10 Years

The nail on the head. Always get those 4th/5th mids and 3rd forwards wrong. And then spend weeks using transfers to try and get the right one. And end up being too late. Hard to then not let that snowball.

          1. Deulofail
            • 8 Years
            6 years, 10 months ago

Yeah. It depends on the prices and transfers though. There could be a great attacking option, but we can't assume there will be any that are better than a premium defender, or even a mid priced attacking defender.

Just looking at GW1 last season - only 2 clean sheets and they were Swansea and WBA. Seven in the next GW, 5 the next.

I guess even if GW1 is short on CS, it's worth riding it out.

Have to be a critic here and say it's good but really doesn't tell much of a story.

Perhaps there was nothing to tell from it in which case it worked well but should've been summarised.

Also would've preffered more data tables etc. That's just how my mind works but interesting in terms of Everton & Chelsea. I think surely Chelsea were tighter in the second quarter of the season than any other point last season?

It was useful to me as it opened my eyes to the fact that defences become tighter later in the season with empirical data and pretty charts to back it up. I'm a sucker for this style of article though so appreciate it's not everyone's cup of tea.

I thought the article shows that teams don't become tighter. The exception is the previous 4 seasons (at the time), which the author is inclined to explain by random variance in the data. Regardless, the difference isn't huge. It's not much less likely to get a CS in the first half of the season, so defenders are still good value, especially attacking defenders, since they are supposedly less in CS mode.

Ah, shit the bed - that's what I meant to write - defences DON'T become tighter as the season wears on. D'oh!

Not me, I'll try to have 13 playable outfielders with a view to being flexible on formation depending on who looks best in any given gameweek but I bet 95% of the time I'll still play 3 at the back.

I'm likely to think the same as you but with 4 at the back, the 5th defender competing with 5th mid or 3rd forward. Basically swapping your 4th mid with a 4th def, but 'depends on prices' #catchphrase

Yeah, any added flexibility comes at the cost of trading down elsewhere. Becomes difficult reading all the RMTs which look at first glance to have used more budget than you. I'll probably cave and go super template 😆

Haha I hope I don't cave unless the template is too obvious, then you just gotta go with it. I like having a deep team. Really suffered last season from injuries and stuff. Depends on who's available though

My structure in defence is to have 5 expensive perma-starters and 3 4.5 for rotation. However, should 2 or all 3 of those cheapies all have good fixtures and be on form, I'd have no hesitation in starting all 5 (altho in practice it might not happen as I'd have to find 3 further upfield to drop to the bench).

        1. Deulofail
          • 8 Years

Is that 8 defenders? I'll consider 5 at the back, but I also want to rake advantage of the money saved on 4.0 fodder compared to 4.5 elsewhere. Depends if the value is better in defence regardless.

            • 11 Years

            Oops, I meant TWO perma-starters!

Not much point thinking about he 2nd half of the season - the FPL landscape will have changed a million times by then.

Partly due to opening fixtures I've got Valencia and Cedric pencilled in, and the 3 rotating cheapies will take first half-season fixtures into account. If Valencia or Cedric prove disappointing, an Evertonian can step into the breech when their bad start clears.

          Contract? Huh?
          You're welcome to check.
My thinking is, a premium striker and a premium mid tend to be first couple of draft picks, then after that, picks become a mix of punts and premium defenders.
There are loads of under the radar mids and a few strikers, so I'm planning on hitting a couple of premium strikers, then 5 premium defenders, then looking at under the radar midgirkd options such as...
          Pogba/Ramsey/Lanzini/Stanislas/Klaassen/Ayew/Gray/Knockaert/Kachunga/Fraser etc

I went 5 at the back for the first three games of the season last year which had me at 71K. It's definitely worth a go. Also frees up a lot of funds for elsewhere.

In all likelihood 352 for me. Think I'll want a 4.0 bench fodder in the outfield initially at least and you don't get that with mids and fwds.

There is so much choice in defence - I am very tempted. Premium defenders tend to equal some very decent midfielders in terms of PPG while costing £3m less.

I would not rule it out but 5 at the back is a risky business.

It is hard to pick clean sheets at the best of times and especially at the start of the season when defenses are rusty after the holidays but the fixtures do suggest that there is lots of points to be had in defense if you get it right.

But genuinely interested this season, I feel like you can't be as casual with it and people aren't being spoon fed as much. Having said that though I hate having my heart on different games/players when watching.

So wanting Alli to do well in FPL and Eriksen to do well in SkySports would be my idea of a nightmare.

You certainly can't afford to miss deadlines and (assuming no major rule changes) there are multiple captaincy deadlines a week so you're right in that it's hard to be 'casual'. No price changes though so no need to worry about that which is really nice.

Going to give it another go definitely.

Finished top 500 or so the season before last....last season was heading that way - but then Kane arrived and my transfers run out and I tumbled away.

Looking forward to it this year though. May invest more in defence if they change the scoring for them - have been really punished before by expensive defenders.

I'm in two minds about whether to sign up. Season before last I played and enjoyed it, last season I quit after a couple of months purely because I didn't have the time to play it properly and real life was swamping my fantasy efforts.

This summer I feel refreshed and am raring to get started in FPL, not sure whether to risk playing this too or not.

The game itself is excellent (although the interface irritates me occasionally) - genuinely great prizes, nicely different to FPL in terms of captaincy/price mechanics. The problem is my ability to concentrate!

I think this is the hardest fantasy game to play given the limited transfers and commitment to making captain changes every day. I had to give it up last year after I kept missing team news deadlines due to work.

Not intended as a bite. Serious point. The defence is solid. If they sign Matic the midfield will be solid. But they need a world class striker. Morata is not that man. Benzema would be better than Morata IMO. But Aubameyang is available - why are Utd trying to get him?

Not as nailed though. Blind can also put in a shift there, as well as Shaw of course. Valencia + Bailly are the two I'm considering. Lindelof if I need the funds as I think he'll be 5.5.

I'm going Bailly as I think Lindelof might get eased in and with Valencia there's always that doubt after internationals.

Currently going with Bailly myself. I do think Lindelof will start from the off, but he doesn't offer any real goal threat. Not that Bailly does either, but going by Lindelof's scout report, it looks like he'll be behind in bonus too.

Yes, those are the prices I expect. I was also questioning Bailly's value at that price given his lack of goal threat. But then you do have to consider that he's probably the most secure option. Valencia will be more secure compared to last season but there'll always be a worry after international breaks. As well as that, there's the fixture congestion in Winter. I just see Bailly as a long-term fire and forget option and so could be worth the outlay. Plus he's got bonus potential.

yeah, i had Bailly for 2nd half of last season and he served me well, clean sheets and normally a couple of bonus points - i'm extremely prone to taking hits, so this year i'm wanting to get as many 'season keepers' as i can , to leave my transfers free for chasing those inevitable bandwagons - will just have to se what price the rest of the defensive options are, may well need an extra 1m somewhere else in the team - although somewhat toying with the idea of starting with a strong defence that i can just leave, and being a bit more experimental in midfield, trying to catch the next Josh King etc - but i know once the season starts and Mr.A.Premium midfielder scores a hat-trick i'll be cashing in on my pricey defence 🙂

Did Ginola get 2, Shearer 1, Albert 1 and was it Peacock who got the other or Beresford? Maybe neither!

Felt like a massive moment at the time but ultimately Keegan didn't know how to close a title out.

              Peacock, Ginola, Ferdinand, Shearer, Albert

Cantona lost it and should have been red carded, David Batty laid the smack down on Nicky Butt, it was all so glorious for a brief while.

95/96 was the year when we blew the title.

A guy who knows nothing about football asked me who was favourites for the Premier League this season. Left me kind of stumped, can't see anybody else other than Chelsea take it at the minute. Maybe City. United, Arsenal and Liverpool have too many issues. Spurs have a great team but I think no home ground and two seasons of 'so close but so far' disappointment will have them too dejected.

Chelsea have the weakest squad of the top sides and will now have UCL football. Costa and Matic might be off, Hazard starts the year injured, Conte might change system. They have issues too.

I think its still far too early to tell, City are building quite the squad but I think as of right now still have some positions that need to be sorted (it looks like they will be though), Chelsea still have the core of a very good team but I feel need a few more quality pieces to really compete again this year, United and Liverpool both need to bring in some quality too and both have potential but we need to see how theirs respective transfers turn out, Spurs are still good and I think Arsenal just aren't up to it (especially if Sanchez leaves).

As others have said Chelsea don't have the deepest squad and may find it more difficult with CL, Spurs at Wembley will have to see how that goes, personally i reckon it could be City as favourites, maybe even United if they had some attacking firepower - as a Gooner i can say we have no chance, maybe only if we buy every single player we are linked with and keep Sanchez, and Wenger finally introduces some tactical variation/adaptability...

So at lunchtime I did a little analysis of how the prem teams normally start the season. I took the first 4 games for he last 3 seasons as my basis. I can give people a picture of my findings if they want but my summaries are below:-

In the last 3 seasons stoke have only won in their opening 4 games once (away v City 2014) lost first 2 home games in past 3 seasons

Saints have not won in opening 2 games in past 3 seasons. They seem to struggle early on bar relegation fodder

Man City have won their first 4 games for the past 2 seasons. Previous season they still won the first 2 games. Gw1/2 they win each year

Bar last season West Ham have started well away from home. Winning both 15/16 and 1w1d year previous. Last year lost to Chelsea and Man City

Bar the mourinho bad year Chelsea start very well. All wins bar 1 draw. This does ignore 1w 1d 2l in 15/16.

Everton only have 1 win in the opening 2 home games for the last 3 years. Last year v stoke. 3D 2L otherwise

Liverpool. ??????? They are capable of anything.

Arsenal start slowish. Not won opening home game since palace in 14/15.

Swansea, for a smaller club, actually start pretty well historically. 6 wins 3 draws in the first 4 games for last 3 seasons.

WBA did not win a home game in their first 2 in any of the last 3 seasons. Only 2 wins from 12 in total.

    TL/DR:-

    Summary:-
Be wary of saints and wba good starting games
Arsenal may be avoidable early on
    Get a Man City player
    Oppose stoke early

Very nice - would be interested in a larger sample size but appreciate the effort and obviously the further back you go the less relevant it becomes. To be fair, I don't think I'll worry too much about this as there are too many variables at play but it's interesting nonetheless 🙂

I like to think all these little bits of info are good to sway you on tough decisions, not make the decision for you. So if, for example, I was torn between yoshida and trippier this may tip it towards the Spurs man as my In head reasoning would already include the good saints fixtures. However you three need to add in loads of other bits of info to get a final decision.

On the flip side, I'm pretty sure I'm getting Kane. It doesn't matter what info comes up like this, it won't sway that decision at all.

They've won 4, drawn 6 and lost 2 of the first 4 games of past 3 seasons. The losses were to Liverpool and man united.

Won their first home game on 2 of 3 occasions. Often start away though and don't win

Oh sure, not rubbishing it at all, wouldn't have hulked it if there wasn't merit, just my personal preference to try not to pay too much heed to stuff which can easily be statistical noise. Everyone plays things differently though 🙂

Nice one mate 🙂 saw this on Twitter too, but waaaayy too restricted in terms of type back!

      Really cool research:

      - Great point on Swansea. I remember having Siggy on the bench when they played United first day of the season a couple of seasons back and being very annoyed when he delivered.

      - 100% bet against us (arsenal) on the first day of the season. We're awful at getting off the ground.

      - Key thing here is identity of the City player. It's likely to be rotation central there this year. I can't see him fitting KdB, D Silva, B Silva, Sterling, Sane, Jesus and Kun in one team (unless he plays 2-1-5-2 or something whacky), so someone will miss out, especially as presumably Fernandinho (if not at RB) or Yaya or someone will be playing in a defensive role. And what if they (hopefully not!!!) sign Sanchez... !

I'd probably say KdB is marginally worth the outlay, or Sanchez if he goes. However, it's going to be really tough to guarantee your choice keeps on playing.

Think I'll be looking at a 3-5-2 myself, with a 7.5m second striker and 2 or maybe even 3 premium midfielders; could even be Mane KdB Sanchez (if at Arsenal)?

      Thanks again!

Definitely peak end rule and it's a hangover from last season, but I want a killer midfield in a 3-5-2 I think, just something so nice about that 🙂

            Definitely worth heavy thought.

3-5-2 in Sky looks assured too.

Might swerve Baggies and saints now though.

Be having a chat about this on our pod to be recorded in the next couple of days - fixture focus for now.

I do think WBA keepers if 8.5m will be in my squad as "fire and forget" if that's the case. Foster if 4.5 is surely a good bet, and is going to finish in the top 10 keepers. Good enough for me. Can be taken out obvs too on wildcard.

Saints a lot depends on Pellegrino. I am struggling to see where the key assets there are at the moment; Tadic if he becomes a pure no 10 could be interesting. Pellegrino seemed to love 4-2-3-1 at Alaves so that could be great. Obviously that then means there's an issue up top, with Austin and Gabbiadini vying for the lone forward role (if that's what he does). Could I do Redmond in GW1 squad for the second year in a row? Hmm.
              There's always Bertie I suppose.

      West Ham....

      Best
      - West Ham 3-4 Tottenham 2007, Tevez free kick was ace, Berbatov showed he could do it too. We were 3-2 up in the 88th minute. It kick started our survival that season and Tevez was just brilliant after that.
      - Season before last, wins at Liverpool, City, Arsenal & Everton. Draws at Chelsea and Man United. I got to go to all the northern trips and was brilliant, Everton was my personal favourite coming back from 2-0 down. We were terrible all game too. I also moved to Liverpool just before this season so was brilliant doing the double over them.

Worst - Possibly the end of the 2014/15 season. We lost just 3 times up until Boxing day, from there on in we only WON 3 times, Sunderland, Burnley & Hull all at home. Losing 4-0 to WBA in the FA Cup kickstarted our terrible end to the season. Could've been a really good season but was awful and I lost interest in my team for the first time.
      - Relegation in 2010/11 was poor, but it helped us out massively and better then than a time like now.
      - Also up there would have to be relegation in 2003 but I was only 8 back then. The team we had and to get relegated. Not good.

Also feel that football clubs have lost their identity to a large extent and gone from being something that represented your area to a global brand more concerned with profit than local fans.

The Etihad is a soulless bowl but so are most of the new ones I've been to.

Villa Park on the other hand is absolutely mint. All the old features and immaculately kept.

Eric Cantona come back game springs to mind against Liverpool.
Also the epic game with Arsenal the one with the Roy Keane Viera tunnel incident. I was never so hyped watching a United match i think and that is saying something.

Worst moment is probably when Roy Keane got the road from United i felt like turning my back on the club at the time and a little bit of my fanatical United support died that day.

arsenal fans just shut the FACUP, you'll be playing on cold Thursday nights, and you're not signing any mbappe or lacazette.

Think you posted this in the wrong place. This is FFS, not the comments section of Arsenal Fan TV.

No-one is boasting about the FA Cup. It's a fig leaf for general stagnation.

I thank you, however, for your thought-provoking, well structured and elegantly expressed comment this day, sir.

      Best wishes from us all.

Why are Thursday nights going to be colder than Tuesday or Wednesday nights?

Cold Thursday nights? It can be quite a balmy and agreeable climate in FC Houjamawatzhit in autumn
