FPL Draft Game Revealed

Fantasy Premier League have revealed the forthcoming release of a new draft game for the 2017/18 season.

After much rumour and suggestion, the news arrived via an update to the official app and offered some early information on the game type.

First things first, it’s important to stress that the new FPL draft game will be free to play and run alongside the “traditional” game as an addition to our season.

The game will allow for the formation of leagues with between 2-16 members. Within those leagues, teams will consist of the usual 15-man squads but, of course, the squads will be unique. So only one team in each league can own Harry Kane.

Like the traditional FPL game, leagues can run in the classic form or in the head-to-head format. We can set up leagues or put ourselves in public leagues with “strangers”. If you really want to, you can enter up to ten leagues over the season.

Details on how the draft will work are yet to be released but it is stated that no budget will be in place. Therefore the draft will take place without player prices, operating a similar “snake” draft system that we’ve seen in other games such as Dugout FC, with players “taking it in turns” to select players until a squad is complete.

The game will use the exact same scoring rules as FPL, with bonus points applying.

This new FPL game follows two years on from Ultimate Fantasy Premier League – a version that was closed for the 2016/17 season. Many of us miss that incarnation and will welcome this new development as an addition to our seasons.

Certainly for those who can recall auction nights in the original Fantasy League, FPL Draft could represent a blissful return to those halcyon days where we battled to get Alan Shearer in our squads.

We will bring you more information on FPL Draft in the weeks to come, including our take on the strategies involved.

The classic FPL game remains on course for a release in the week of July 10.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

So, while this has been discussed plenty in other threads, it seems remiss not to capture more discussion on FPL Draft here.

Will you play it? How will you play it - with friends or in public leagues? How many teams will you enter? How will you run it alongside your traditional FPL team? Will you try to work hard to mirror some similar selections? How will it split your allegiances come matchdays?

    Lots to ponder.

As you might of guessed, as an original player of Fantasy League, I welcome the opportunity to play draft games - particularly one that has some crossover with FPL. Just not sure how many Draft teams I can manage, though.

This is an exciting addition and definitely looking to try it with friends to get bragging rights! a more realistic depiction of the best epl manager as there really is only one of each player available!

At this moment has to be Kane. Interested to see how they going to facilitate transfers. Can imagine many more smooth posts when you pick up a player that a rival just tossed aside

Won't play it. Too much effort and lack of control in the drafting. If you get stuck drafting 10th of 10 in the first round it is rubbish. It's not like NFL drafting where there are many more stud options. You know in FPL there are about 6 or 7 studs and if you don't get one it is usually rubbish.

Only 6-7? You need to cast your net wider.

Have a look at points scoring last year. Only 6 players scored over 200 points. If you are drafting 10th of 10 you could be 60 to 90 points down on the top pick after the first round. As I said, this isn't NFL.

I take it you haven't tried draft before?
The 2nd iteration, you get pick 1 11th best player and the 1st guy gets 20th best. And so on till the 15th player.
It balances out nicely as Mark says. Try it if you haven't, the draft is the most fun about the game.

To give you some context Alli was 19th pick and an turned out an absolute monster.
Draft games can give a higher high than normal fpl when it turns out right.

Doesn't it go 0-10, the 10-0 (backwards). I think it all works out in the end. The guy who goes first and picks Kane has to wait for 18 more selections until it's his turn again in a league of 10. Besides, perhaps you could get involved in a league of 2- 5 players or something. Each to their own, of course.

Yeah it does. But FPL has so few studs that drafting 10th of 10 would just be rubbish.

Well you are guaranteed to get your 10th and 11th choice players or better! I'm not certain that Coutinho and Eriksen are in my top 11. Maybe they are, but I don't think it matters because the guy who goes first is only guaranteed his 1st choice and someone in his top 20.... and then it starts again!

If you pick late in one round, you pick early in the next. It's surprising how that can balance out. It's certainly not always good to have first pick for that very reason.

Mark, I joined your FFS Dugout Draft League last season and ended up picking 8th out of a league of 8 players (which also meant I picked 9th as well). Perhaps because he'd had only had one big season at that stage Kane was still available, as was Eriksen. Everyone always seems to forget how difficult it is to predict the season to come based purely on the one just played. I found picking last a far riskier proposition than first. Btw, are the FFS Dugout leagues likely to continue now FPL is running a draft league? Also, I've just realised after the better part of a decade lurking this is my first ever FFS post. Tbh, coming out the shadows feels a bit weird!

This is excellent news Mark, I do NFL fantasy and it's always draft for me. Great because there is such skill and knowledge involved. Having previous experience in drafting teams will definitely be useful for success.

Unless you're in top 5 picks, it definitely helps to be on the tale end of the snake so you can take back to back picks. Being in the middle is packed with uncertainty.

10 and 11 probably as good as 1 and 20, less risk on the one premium asset. Although captaincy possibly means that a top stud is more important in an fpl draft than in the American games

Tempting to play with my colleagues, we are about 6-7 who play fpl actively. It should give everyone a decent squad.

Kane will be top scorer yet again next year I think, once Spurs do their annual throwing of the European cups they will be unstoppable.

I think City players can be wild cards in the draft, nobody knows who are gonna play and how much. But whoever nails down a spot in their front 3/4 will get points, and lots of them.

Just doesn't capture the intricacies of football enough really. It's an opportunity to pick the best footballers, not the best FPL footballers. Draft scores should always be something like 200-200 in my opinion, like Togga or NFL drafts

In a 16-man draft, chances are you're going to end up with some fodder. You need that fodder to be able to get big scores, and they'd get that through being rewarded for things like clearances, interceptions, key passes and aerials won etc

I'm really interested in this draft. Does anyone know it works for new signings and injured players? For saying sake on Draft Day if you knew Costa was in Milan having a medical and Ronaldo was in Brighton having a medical could you theorectically pick Costa and then fill his void with Ronaldo when the game updates?

I will be playing a draft league with 6 friends, I dont want to be first pick reckon 3rd pick in 6 is probably best. My top 6 players are

      Kane
      Sanchez
      Hazard
      Aguero
      Jesus
      Mane

      next 6

      Firmino
      Alli
      Eriksen
      KdB
      Sane
      Siggy

I think it depends on whether transfers in the season are allowed from the available player pool. The draft process always was the best experience originally with fantasy football and last seasons version was a real let down as I was the only player playing in my division.

One incredibly important thing, Mark: I strongly advise no-one sets up a 16 man league.

It would be an absolute disaster. A nightmare. Terrible.

I've been running my own 8 man Draft league for five years, pretty akin to what this will likely be, and the player pool gets decimated at that point.

FPL appear to have gone the simple way which is to be expected given wide audience(same scoring)
      Questions
      - 11 active players- what size of squad?
-Free agents(unpicked)needs to be some order/set timing as to their pickup(like fantrax and draftfantasy)?

I'm really excited by a draft version of FPL. We moan about template teams all the time: blocking tactics in the final game weeks, transferring in highly owned players to reduce risk ... the draft mechanism throws all of that out of the window. It's the same game but dramatically different, imo. You know that when someone scores or assists, only YOU are receiving those points (in your mini-league) - how awesome is that? 🙂

The draft itself is half of the fun. I'd like to see the snake option over an auction, as on the whole, it plays out pretty fair when making 15 picks. I wouldn't recommend more than 10 teams to a league however as then the lower picks in the first round may not be suitable captain candidates. This really is the chance to contrast how a Kane + Stanislas compares with an Eriksen + Ramsey, for example.

I'll be setting up both a standard mini-league and draft mini-league with friends. Add on the Sky FF game with the rule changes, and it'll be another 9 months of reduced work productivity and wife nagging 😀

Never played a draft game before so really looking forward to giving this a go 🙂 Already got interest from several friends so looks like a mini league is going to happen between us!

One question I do have though is how are new additions to the league accounted for? And can you drop and transfer players in like you can in normal FPL? (both from rival teams and "free agents" who are unattached after the draft).

    25. Twisted Saltergater

Another thing to consider when making your picks, is that you're choosing a player for the entire season. You're unlikely to have the luxury of picking say, Mahrez for a run of 6 games, then replacing him like for like - unless of course, you trade him to a rival for someone you think is about to hit form...

Bit of a different strategy to the usual FPL game, but should be great with a bunch of mates.

Played the draftfantasyfootball for the last 2 seasons and will switch over to the official one this season. Draft is fun but a few things need to be ensured. You definitely need a commissioner of sorts to verify trades. My mate traded Aguero for Martial in 15-16 just so that he could ensure I didn't finish first. The waivers and blocks system on dff works well and is a fair system so that you are not completely dependent on your original draft team. I think in both seasons the team who went first definitely didn't finish on top. So the importance of starting first is overplayed.

I've been playing in a 3 man draft league for the past 4 years using the FPL site + spreadsheets. Absolutely love the format but I'm curious to see what the rules of the official draft league will be. Will there be Wildcards, how transfers are handled etc. For a 3 man league using the FPL scoring system is perfect, but I can see this being a big problem for leagues with over 5 players. After the first 50 or so players are picked an awful lot of players will be consistent 2pt earners. I think other Draft FPL websites use a different scoring system to balance this out with points for pass completion, tackles, etc.

Ideally the draft day would be after the transfer deadline day. You would seriously handicap your team picking Sanchez first and he heads off to Munich. Lots of details are unknown - trade, free agent rules etc but it's an exciting addition.

Ultimately would like to see an auction version - this avoids players complaining they never had a shot at the studs because of their draft position.

Mark, what is your opinion on the ideal number of teams in the draft league. Enough to make it competitive but not too much for dilution of talent pool.

      Strikers are the limiting position:

      Last season

12 strikers scored over 10 goals

15 striker scored over 100 FPL points.

8 teams means 24 strikers selected which is reasonable however 10 teams is 30 strikers from a limited selection.

      Thoughts?

It wouldn't interest me. Seems it would only be fun if you've got a tight bunch of mates and time enough. I'm a bit isolated out in Cambodia and haggling over time zones with a dodgy internet connection would be inconvenient. My regular FPL obsession keeps me plenty busy and I'm in a couple of small weekly money leagues which I find sufficiently fulfilling.

    Which one you prefer?
    Man utd defence or spurs?
Spurs defence looks more solid but utd have better starting fixtures
I may pick both and play 433 with cedric and dawson other two

I think Spurs have a first-class defence but I'm avoiding them due to their 38 away fixtures. For fixtures alone I'll start with a United defender

I'll pick based on individual players, where team and fixtures are factors in the individual's points potential. Therefore Valencia is on my watchlist, plus Spurs fullbacks. Any other players from those teams would have to be excellent (surprisingly good) value for me to consider.

Need to see the details, but at first it looks like a very simple version. No option to auction instead of snake, no extra budget to pick free agents (I guess they will do it on a first come, first serve basis which is bad), probably no IR spots despite the small 15-player rosters (for your stars who will get injured), etc etc

It is a welcome addition, but I fear that the game will be far too simple for people who are used to draft.

The idea, as with FPL, would be to evolve the game. So I get your concerns - and I'll pass them on - but I think the first step is to get an FPL audience into a draft format and develop from there.

Totally agreed Mark. It is a welcome addition. I doubt many of the hard core draft fans will move to FPL straight away, but I am extremely happy that they made that move. No platform could advertise the format as well as FPL.

Drafts (auctions and snakes) were the past of Fantasy (my best FF memories when I met with a few friends in a shady pub to do my yearly auctions), but I also believe they are the future of it too.

Snake is the most popular format and the one used by FPL. Basically, you draft your players according to your position (that is randomly given to you before the draft).

Imagine there are 10 players in your league, If you get the number 1 spot, you will draft 1st, 20th, 21st, 40th,etc etc. If you get spot 5, you will draft 5th, 16th, 25th, 36th, etc etc

Auctions are gaining some momentum. No random draft orders here, people bid on the players they want and highest bidder gets the player (obviously there is a salary cap).

I like the idea of auctioning. In fact it excites me! But I doubt I can convince my friends to get involved with something that requires as much mental effort as an auction haha. The option would be welcomed by me though

Yes, the mechanisms of the free agent market will be interesting to know more about.

There will also be a big difference if you're competing in a 5-team league or in a 16-team league. I'm imagining a 10-team league to be quite interesting long-term.

Never played a draft game before.

    A question regarding taking turns:

Can your rival wait until 1 minute before the deadline to make his transfer leaving you only 1 minute to make yours?

Usually each has player gets a time limit of approx 60-90s to make a pick, once they've picked and it's your pick, you get the same amount of time.

    2. Respect My Authoritah

Doesn't quite work like that. There's usually a "draft day" which is a time period in which initial squads are selected. Each player would have a set time per choice.

After that, it's about making swaps and snapping up free agents, neither of which should be affected by the problem you're worrying about

I like the idea but my favourite part of FPL is playing against everyone, seeing my rank in the 4.5m leaderboard.

Every draft game I've played has been good but frustrating. It often comes down to who is most active, makes the most trades, etc; but then in other games it just turns into who can choose the top player (Kane, Sanchez, whatever) and the teams stay more or less the same. I think it has to be pretty complex to be fair and fun.

Like always, I'll stick with FPL only. It takes up so much time only playing one game

You could either trade Sanchez with A or B. Or if, for some crazy reason you dropped the player, it would be who is ranked lowest after the game week who would be able to pick him up first.
You won't be 'selling' in this game, if it follows suit with other draft games.

              You trade to another competitor.

In Fantasy NFL you can trade a star player for 2 or 3 from another team then pick up in owned players on waivers to fill your squad out. Expect it will be something like that.

Other managers in the league can veto the trade if they feel it's an unfair trade.
              I.e. 2 managers colluding.

Based on last year's final points total, if they were all taken in order your first 3 picks in a 10 man league could be:

    Pick 1: Sanchez/Zlatan/Pedro
    Pick 10: Firmino/King/Walker

I'd rather pick 1. But not horrendous at 10 either.

Who decides when the draft is and who over your friends gets first pick in the draft etc?

Do the game sort out the order of the picks and how long you have online to make your pick?

We want to organise a league with friends but have friends all over the world in the same league. Could we manage ?

Admin of the league sets time and date. Usually the game decides draft order in random or there might be an option for the admin to pick the order. Pick time has been between 30 seconds to an hour in some games. You could manage it for sure, but for it to go smoothly it's best to have everyone on their computers at the same time if possible.

I hope the Arsenal Board and Wenger agree to sack off the EL. Then they could do a Chelsea and play once a week to win the title. Everyone talks about injuries, but when you play once a week you don't pick up injuries.

      Cech
      Mustafi Koscielny Monreal
      Bellerin Xhaka ????? Kolasinac
      Ozil Sanchez
      Lacazette

They should sign a defensive CM and play Sanchez £300k a week.

Nailing the mechanisms of the actual draft itself seems absolutely key to making a game like this successful. I tried a couple of draft games last season and various players had either misunderstood how the actual draft functioned, or suffered technical problems (or, being live drafts, missed it altogether!).

Those who did poorly from the draft (for whatever reason) lost interest rapidly when they were left with the dross, and I lost interest because I had so many of the top players I was winning too much!

Let's hope FPL have come up with a relatively foolproof method of selecting players. Could be a fun addition.

Depends. Might be 4.0 starting keepers / defenders, or some will go 4.0 regardless. There's usually a passable 4.5 mid somewhere. And if going 4/4/2 you might have a 4.5 FWD. Which would be 17.0.

Look who is on the bench:

Coleman Williams Jags Keane Bolaie (Baines)
    Gueye Schneiders
    Siggy Klaasen
    Giroud

Bench: Baines McCarthy Holgate Barkley Miralles Davis Lookman

If Koeman can teach Bolasie to put in the work at wingback, Everton will have a side getting into the elite this year. Obviously Coleman and Bolasie must come back from injury the way they left. I am not sure about the new forward we bought from Spain so i have left him out until now.

fair enough. If Baines turns out to be fading then surely there's a talented youngster able to step up.

Plenty of good youngsters for sure but I think a left back will be the only real concern in the squad if Baines fades.

Have we seen the optimal dead team squad yet? Usually there is an article on it per below:

Interested to know whether you could have won FPL just choosing the OTDS even ignoring chips.

Pasqualinho had found a dead team to equal OR1.
Although it does use a chip in GW1 for an extra 2 points.

But considering OR1 had benefited much more from his chips, I think it is fair.

        Heaton
        Cahill, Coleman, Azpi
        King, Sanchez, Alli, Eriksen
        Kane (c), Lukaku (v), Llorente

        bench of:
        Pickford, Allen, Jagielka, Stephens

2563 points with TC in GW1 giving extra 2 points to match OR1.

Interesting that you can still win FPL just choosing a dead team though. Obviously very difficult in practice, but it shows that patience can pay off.

Thinking long-term I'd love to see a Draft Keeper League. Between seasons you'll be able to protect a certain number of players in your squad before the yearly draft. Say 7 protected players out of 15, with the 8 remaining players being available for the draft.

The upside is that you'll be able to hold a young player from the early days of his career on his way to stardom; perhaps enticing to some?

The obvious downside is that managers will hold onto Kane for years and years...

      Like a dynasty league.
Good idea. Pick up young kids and stash them on your bench for future seasons or use them as trade bait.

With the transfer window not closing until early September having any sort of draft before then could be troublesome with waivers potentially taking control of big name players.

Steve Mounie 22 years score 15 goals for Montpellier last year. Guess about FPL 6 mil.
Ndidi, Leicester. Very impressive and gets forward 5 mil at a guess for FPL.

Mino wants to get paid, Chelsea board dithering on the price, Mino floats MUFC interest to the usual suspects. Someone ends up buying, Mino gets his money.

Either we are pressurizing madrid to sell morata or everton playing with united and che.

Lukaku > Morata IMO. If Utd sign Lukaku I would be much happier than if they signed Morata as someone who has a live bet on Utd to win the title this season.

Think Morata has a higher potential. Lukaku the better player atm.

For me the key is Lucky knows the PL as well as anyone; in the short-term, i.e. this season that would give him the edge over Morata and would probably be worth the extra c.30% fee

At either United or Chelsea he would get excellent service and should score hatfuls. I might have to consider doubling up with Kane and Lucky which I'm reluctant to do.

I'm not overly keen on either, but prefer Morata to Lukaku. I don't think Lukaku is good enough at holding the ball for the way Mou likes to play. He could flourish alongside another striker or with a fast front 3, but if we play like we did with Ibra leading the line, I think he would struggle

Who's the best value 8.5 or below option on Sky?

Currently on Mounie, but also considering Depoitre, or another defender and going 4-4-2 (already have Stanislas and Redmond)

Won't bother with this Draft game. Like others have said, in a group of 10, the first drafters (1st player pick) have a huge advantage over the last guy, i.e, 10th.

Say you are picking 10th and looking for your premium striker but Kane, Lacazette, Jesus, Kun, Lukaku, Morata*...etc are unavailable.
Doesn't this mean you will have to get Benteke as your go to forward?

        1. diesel001

You would probably pick two midfielders. But as I said, FPL studs are far less than in NFL because of the points scoring being so skewed towards results (eg. a goal scored or a clean sheet) as opposed to actions (e.g. interceptions, successful passes)

        2. Deulofail
          • 8 Years

I think people would pick Sanchez before Jesus/Morata etc. You only need one striker. If it's Defoe or Beteke, then so be it. That's part of the fun of picking and prioritising players.

If you take price in FPL as a guide to points potential and therefore popularity, then there are plenty of midfielders that are competing with premium forwards, and you also need to get 3 decent defenders, of which there are also 'studs'.

      10th pick Siggy and Coutinho

1st pick more likely to be Kane and Ozil. Not as many stud options in FPL and with current point scoring, in a 10 or more person leagues, advantage will be with the early drafters.

Not like NFL where you can get QBs, WRs and RBs who get junk yard points even if they play for a rubbish tram. Or a defensive scoring systems that gets points for actions like turnovers, sacks, limited yards etc. Point scoring needs to change to make it more action based (e.g. not just points for scoring a goal or keeping a clean sheet, but for tackles, for interceptions for successful passes etc.)

Not sure that's true, but 10 players is too much for FPL imo. The scoring system doesn't really allow for a wide pool of players, and 150 picks is gonna end with so much fodder.

Even if it's just 11 picks, still aren't enough imo. I'd like to be able to have a decent pool of free agents to select from during the season, so probably 7-8 players max
