Sky Sports Fantasy Football Is Back

The Sky Sports Fantasy Football game for 2017/18 was officially launched on Wednesday.

This time around, the top prize has been doubled to a substantial £50,000 – incentive enough to assemble a team in time for kick-off on August 11.

It’s also worth noting that Sky Sports have introduced a handful of tweaks to their rules and scoring system for 2017/18.

We take a look at the main implications below…

Overhaul

Without doubt, Sky Sports’ biggest bombshell for this season is the new Overhaul feature, as described in the rules section on the site:

“For 2017/18 we have introduced our new Overhaul feature. You will be able to take advantage of Overhaul twice this season; once in September and the other taking place in February. During these weeks, you will be able to make an unlimited amount of transfers but must remain within the budget of £100 million. These transfers will not come out of your 40-player transfer limit.”

Akin to FPL’s wildcard, this new feature looks set to shape the way that Fantasy managers will play the game, with initial team selection likely to be heavily focused on the opening few weeks.

By using the Members ticker feature here on Fantasy Football Scout, you can stack up on the teams with favorable fixtures from the get-go.

Captain Scheduling

One of Sky Sports’ biggest draws is the multi-captain angle and, thankfully, it’s here to stay for the season ahead.

They have, however, rolled out a scheduling feature to help Fantasy managers keep on top of mid-Gameweek swaps – you can now pick your captain for each matchday ahead of time to avoid last-minute Wi-Fi related panics.

The Scoring System

There is just one tweak here, though it’s a welcome one that should help improve the prospects of defenders.

“Defenders will now only start to receive -1 point per goal conceded after the first goal they let in.”

Shipping just one goal now means defenders hold on to their two appearance points rather than dropping to one as in previous years. Defenders from the lesser teams are therefore likely to hold more appeal than before and could begin to represent decent value for the season ahead.

Weekly Articles and Podcast

We’re delighted to announce that we will be back supporting the Sky Sports game with weekly articles again for 2017/18.

This begins with our pre-season coverage.

Over the next few weeks, we’ll be providing Player Price List analysis articles, Man of the Match analysis and much more.

Also, I’ll be talking through the week’s action and upcoming plans with FFS posters Buffrey and Lewis on our regular podcast – the latest episode can be found here.

There will also be a new community article to exclusively deal with Sky Sports Fantasy teams.

Those looking to get involved should click this link.

Scout League

Of course, we have already set up our Fantasy Football Scout League and after winning the League of Leagues for each of the last four seasons, we’re looking to defend our crown in 2017/18.

Get your teams in – the name is FFScout and the pin number to join is 8300422.

Pick two to start with out of:

    Kane, Lukaku, Aguero, Jesus, Lacazette.

Having 3 elite forwards hurts team balance but its so tempting tbh.

      Huddersfield 4.5/Reserve GK 4.0 =8.5

      Stephens 5 Olsson 4.5
      Evans 4.5 Dunk 4.5 Muniesa 4 =22.5

      Lallana 7.5 Pogba 8 Willian 8

The 4 Sky cash leagues are not capped, you can expect to find around 1000+ people in them. Last year the prize pools were between 6.5k & 11k in each. With the top 4 paid.

We like the format ...it's very simple. You fpl vets probably wouldn't approve but points are only awarded for goals, assists and cleanies. As you say we probably could set something up ourselves but I wouldn't have a clue. It's like a familiar old pair of slippers and everyone enjoys it. The auction is what makes it and the close hand to hand fight through the season ...no casuals and no giving up.

I just don't rate him. He's had his chance in PL and didn't look up to it.

Yeah we had a look at him and liked him in our article. I think he's a decent punt and could nudge in as my own punt in GW1.

A lot of game-changing goals scored last year for Derby, and will be motivated to prove himself.

Price likely to be 5.5. Of last year's promoted sides, none of their midfielders were above that: Fischer (lolz) at Boro, Snoddy and Markovic at Hull, and Brady at Burnley when he joined was also 5.5.

Generally either 3-5-2 or 3-4-3. You need to be flexible. The aim is to use the bulk of the 40 transfers rotating strikers & high value mids depending on form/fixtures/injuries.

Because of the way defenders are priced and penalised for conceding it's almost never wise to have 4 at the back, although there are bound to be occasional exceptions.

If Lacazette and Jesus (maybe Morata) are around 10m, Lukaku around 11m, Firmino around 9m, and Kane is around 13m...I don't think you'll see a lot of Kane+Lukaku, because there's really good value for cheaper.

Agree with you. Think we might see the majority of "casual" teams (well, those that set their sides in time for the GW1 deadline on the fri) having both: Kane as high scoring forward last year / high price / autocaptaincy / FOMO and then Kaku for the fixtures plus signing for United for a lot of £££

Having both imbalances the team so thats the penalty you pay. A 3rd elite forward kills the squad flexibility too much.

If there is a high enough ownership for 3 upfront, I'll go for 3 upfront just to protect my OR and downgrade when midfield options appear and 1 striker is blanking

I think I understand xG - based on the positions players shoot from, would the average player be expected to score. My issue is that it is retrospective analysis and doesn't account for the human element: form, purple patch, luck - whatever you want to call it. At least, I don't think it does.

Sounds like it's not launching on Monday. Maybe Thursday? It'll give them time to release a few player prices each day.

Mark and the Scouts knows about this by the sounds of things, as I saw a few scouts asking which players we would like to know the prices off previously (I think it was a hot topic).

Might see it with Mahrez if he goes to Arsenal too - no way he can be anywhere near last year's valuation of 9.5. If he is still a Leicester player he might be bumped down to 7.5/8.0, so if he does eventually sign for us (which I don't want, but it has been mooted) you could have a mid range(ish) player playing for Arsenal

Ditto Barkley at Spurs, but less people are interested

Don't think they have to do anything. They do.what they want, and my guess is they would pop on an extra 0.5 just to be safe (assuming they'd price him 0.5-1.0m more at United). That way he'll be only a little under/over priced, rather that risking being a lot over/under priced. Seems like the sensible option

            That's a different question.

Do I think a player who has a goal every other game record in the French league can replicate that form in a league that contains teams like Stoke, Huddersfield and Brighton? The answer is I think there's a very good chance he'll do well against weaker and mid table sides and may score against top sides. At 10.5 that prices him about right. If a striker can score against all sides and score alot they should be 11.5-13m....which is what I'd value Kane, Aguero or Sanchez at.

        Mickey mouse French League 😆

Man, people are so blinded. I love the epl and it is my favourite league but so overrated in terms of quality (not entertainment).

That same Mickey Mouse League has produced the last 3 winners of the PFA Players' Player of the year.

        Hazard
        Mahrez
        Kante

All 3 had only played for French teams before coming to the EPL.

For me it depends whether another Arsenal player can cover that and is cheaper. Given we assume he'll be the starting striker - could be on pens - in an attacking side then I think that's a good price.

I like Ramsey this season - but he's injury prone and not as integral to goals as the guy up top.

Very glad I got it right in the article we did on him!

I think he's a bit too high with the risk factor and the fixtures; people won't want to punt as we (we being more engaged FPL managers, or "non-casuals") tend to be a bit risk averse come GW1. It seems a bit much to punt on someone new to the Prem, even if his prior form suggests he's a good signing.

What I would say is this: if he performs below expectations, and drops to 10.4-.3 from the beginning, he might be worth picking up in GW6, when Arsenal's fixture list reads WBA BHA wat.

My prediction for this year is that AW will target top 4 at the expense of UEL. This will mean the strongest team starting in the Prem. I think this will therefore make Arsenal this year's Chelsea in the FPL sense, with their best players maybe protected from the thurs-sun grind (players like Gibbs Gabriel Welbz in UEL B team). I think might mean we end up with triple Arsenal in a lot of teams due to the certainty of starts - Bellerin/Kola, Ozil/Sanchez, Lacazette. From that perspective, Lacazette avoiding 11+ is really good.

I am also liking the idea of him and Ozil combining well. Stories in the media suggest that Lacazette really performed well with Nabil Fekir at Lyon, who has similar characteristics to mercurial Mesut. Ozil had a bad season last year; we could, if he's priced nicely (e.g. the 9.0 or 15/16) have a nice combo on our hands there (think Fab-Costa in 14/15).

In short - probably not considering him for GW1, but I will be keeping an eye on him as the meta develops.

10.5m is bang on what I predicted. For those who decide they can't afford Kand AND Lukaku he'll be a very appealing alternative.

Yeah, we need more context to understand how good this is - say, surprisingly, Kane is 11.5 again then he suddenly doesn't seem so great.

'd say that that's a fair price, though.

you predicting a strong start from Arsenal? What if they lose Sanchez and get Mahrez instead?

No I'm not: I've said on our pod and elsewhere that we always start poorly.

If I do have an asset from us, it'll be Ozil if he gets 9.0 again. However, from GW6 onwards when the fixtures turn somewhat (for 3 GWs at least) when I normally blow my early WC we will be high in my consideration set, along with Everton.

      Too much.

Completely useless to release the price of a freshman, nothing to compare with. Clever though

Four good fixtures out of the first 6 GWs, three of which are home tilts. I would consider him, will have to wait for the pricing of the other forwards.

That's what I expected. Same price as Jesus I would think.

Something to bear in mind - Ligue 1 might not be at the same level as the Premier League, but it is still in the top 5 leagues in Europe, according to the UEFA coefficients. Of those five, the French top-flight is the most defensive, and so it's an impressive feat to score 20+ goals in a season there, as Lacazette has done on three consecutive occasions.

      2016/17 - Goals Per Game
      Serie A - 2.96
      La Liga - 2.94
      Bundesliga - 2.87
      Premier League - 2.80
      Ligue 1 - 2.61

      2015/16 - Goals Per Game
      Bundesliga - 2.83
      La Liga - 2.74
      Premier League - 2.70
      Serie A - 2.58
      Ligue 1 - 2.53

      2014/15 - Goals Per Game
      Bundesliga - 2.75
      Serie A - 2.69
      La Liga - 2.66
      Premier League - 2.57
      Ligue 1 - 2.49

No. Nevermind the quality of the league, many players have flopped going into a different country. Probably more than have kicked on straight away anyway. Too many other proven big hitters to justify the risk.

With Sanchez being the highest point scorer in EPL fantasy last year i'd think it's too much of a gamble to have Lacazette in our Starting Squads off the bat.

That being said he will be very popular amongst the casual which will likely result in huge price fluctuation which will affect our TV. If Arsenal start off well (we never do) then he will probably be drafted in our 1st WC

Can't wait to see him play though
