The Sky Sports Fantasy Football game for 2017/18 was officially launched on Wednesday.

This time around, the top prize has been doubled to a substantial £50,000 – incentive enough to assemble a team in time for kick-off on August 11.

It’s also worth noting that Sky Sports have introduced a handful of tweaks to their rules and scoring system for 2017/18.

We take a look at the main implications below…

Overhaul

Without doubt, Sky Sports’ biggest bombshell for this season is the new Overhaul feature, as described in the rules section on the site:

“For 2017/18 we have introduced our new Overhaul feature. You will be able to take advantage of Overhaul twice this season; once in September and the other taking place in February. During these weeks, you will be able to make an unlimited amount of transfers but must remain within the budget of £100 million. These transfers will not come out of your 40-player transfer limit.â€

Akin to FPL’s wildcard, this new feature looks set to shape the way that Fantasy managers will play the game, with initial team selection likely to be heavily focused on the opening few weeks.

By using the Members ticker feature here on Fantasy Football Scout, you can stack up on the teams with favorable fixtures from the get-go.

Captain Scheduling

One of Sky Sports’ biggest draws is the multi-captain angle and, thankfully, it’s here to stay for the season ahead.

They have, however, rolled out a scheduling feature to help Fantasy managers keep on top of mid-Gameweek swaps – you can now pick your captain for each matchday ahead of time to avoid last-minute Wi-Fi related panics.

The Scoring System

There is just one tweak here, though it’s a welcome one that should help improve the prospects of defenders.

“Defenders will now only start to receive -1 point per goal conceded after the first goal they let in.â€

Shipping just one goal now means defenders hold on to their two appearance points rather than dropping to one as in previous years. Defenders from the lesser teams are therefore likely to hold more appeal than before and could begin to represent decent value for the season ahead.

Weekly Articles and Podcast

We’re delighted to announce that we will be back supporting the Sky Sports game with weekly articles again for 2017/18.

This begins with our pre-season coverage.

Over the next few weeks, we’ll be providing Player Price List analysis articles, Man of the Match analysis and much more.

Also, I’ll be talking through the week’s action and upcoming plans with FFS posters Buffrey and Lewis on our regular podcast – the latest episode can be found here.

There will also be a new community article to exclusively deal with Sky Sports Fantasy teams.

Those looking to get involved should click this link.

Scout League

Of course, we have already set up our Fantasy Football Scout League and after winning the League of Leagues for each of the last four seasons, we’re looking to defend our crown in 2017/18.

Get your teams in – the name is FFScout and the pin number to join is 8300422.

The start of the season is so important for me. I messed up last season as I tried to be too rogue with my team but had a great start to 2015/16 because I was taking on board what the regulars on here were posting. I must stay away from players who have purely pre season form that don't have any form in previous seasons is a must. Got burnt last season on Deulofeu.

Go with the tried and tested. For example you won't go wrong with starting out with Kane and Lukaku. It's probably the boring route and it's tempting to go for someone new like Lacazette, but playing safe is the way to success in this game.

what about keepers. Heaton worked wonders last season as Butland did for me the season before. Who is the best cheapie to get?

        1. Heaton and Foster will be my two. Try it out. 🙂

Heaton had 10 clean sheets with lots of saves. Are you still expecting a decent amount of clean sheets now Keane has left? Bournemouth had 9 clean sheets and now have Ake and Begovic at the back. Does that tempt you?

            1. Yes to the first - I think they have stitched up Koeman like a kipper. 🙂
Bournemouth tempt me a lot, but it is a matter of picking the right man.

Not sure yet, but there'll always be a budget goalkeeper who comes out on top, like you said Heaton last year and Butland the year before. Just need to get on board quick when we realize who it is.

I really want to get a balanced team myself with proven fpl players. I will not be taking risks on untested players (Salah, Lacazette etc).

If I do take a punt it will be on 1 player max.

Considering club's history and fan base what I think is whoever the striker may be signs for empty slot of forward will have more than half of ownership in gameweek 1.

Fixtures are also good so what will be your strategy ?

We did a little article when Charlie Taylor signed for them the other day (http://whogottheassist.com/posts/786) which also spoke about Burnley a bit.

My view is that we need to see how well they will do without Keane, and how much of it was to do with him. Be interesting to see how they strengthen/replace him.

I think my penchant for 8.5m tops keeper combo - allowing me to invest more further up the pitch - will preclude me from considering Heaton. He also now loses his rotation appeal - I don't think one can justify 9.5m (assuming Heaton+4.5m) keeper spend if you are playing seriously.

      1. Heaton & Foster, of Jermyn street. Clean shirts our speciality. 😉

I think he's probably too dear at 5.0. I have Burnley earmarked for relegation this season as it'll be a big ask to repeat their home form of last season or suddenly start turning up in away games.

First 5 away fixtures are che/tot/liv/eve/mci - he scored 10 points in all those matches last season, which is 2 PPG. No doubt he'll do well in the first few home games (WBA/CPL/HUD), but I'll give him a miss until I'd feel comfortable playing him every week - 5m is too much to rotate, for me personally.

Don't think he will repeat the 10 clean sheets. I'd guess a points tally closer to 100 this season. I'l l be looking elsewhere. Start with Begovic if he is 4.5. Once Stoke get past their hard opening fixtures I will transfer Butland in.

As the top scoring goalkeeper, why isn't he 5.5m? It's been proven time and time again that the save-focused goalkeepers can keep up with the keepers from the big clubs, so shouldn't they be priced similarly?

I'll still be looking for some 4.5 options, but I'm surprised that he's only 5.0. Makes him a very liable option, if you think Burnley can keep some clean sheets without Keane.

Way too risky. good to have a choice - 9m is needed for that unless there are injuries and the back up gets the nod.

If you play with a non starter then you better make sure your 4.5 keeper stays injury free and can get you clean sheets.

Actually, I disagree a bit here Jonty 🙂

8.5m fine as far as I'm concerned, as long as the 4.0 is the backup (as confirmed as you can possibly get, e.g. Robinson to Heaton last year) of the 4.5. That way you save money plus you are covered in case of injury.

I think that 0.5m, either invested further up the pitch or in the bank, can make a difference.

I also find that it's often the case that your 2x 4.5s can often score the opposite of what you expect: the away keeper in my experiments with 4.5 rotations tends to get more saves (if a 4.5m standard side) than the home one does, so you really need the clean sheet. That isn't ever nailed on with clubs in the mid ranges, so you can often end up with the "wrong" keeper in your 11.

To combat this - this is called affective forecasting in psych - I tend to just have 1 fire and forget keeper with the safety of having his backup as my backup too 🙂

Agree. When I've rotated keepers, the one on the bench always seems to score more points. Prefer to have no choice. And if the 4.5 get injured or dropped it's just 1FT to change him.

Yep. The fire and forget options with keepers additionally make sense when you consider they have the lowest "ceiling" of output: in terms of point bursts (e.g. goals, assists) they will probably never score a goal or get an assist, penalty saves are undeniably random occurrences.

If a keeper can sneak a CS against a top side, they usually get nice big hauls because of the saves, and resulting baps.

There's no risk if you buy his deputy as back-up, and remove him on a WC before DGW blanks.

The thing about rotation is only doing home and away if they are teams that are drastically good or bad away. In the most part a 4.5 keeper will do well with save points in hard away games. I favour the stick to one keeper approach but also have a viable back up. If your 4.5 keeper gets injured and your 4.0 doesn't play then you have to make a transfer for a cheap goalie - which is never exciting and could have to be done for a hit.

The Heaton Robinson style move can work - but often the back up is rubbish - at saving and shut outs - as Robinson proved.

My preference is 2x 4.5...and have a favourite. Im hoping Butland will be that for me this season - Stoke do well at home and he's good for saves against tough sides. Ryan at Brighton a good back up - happy to play him - but would prefer not to. Also after a few games we should know whether Brighton can bring some of their champ def form to the PL.

I've mostly have good seasons (except for last year obviously ;-)) but the one thing I always get right is keepers. I picked Heaton and Foster from the off last season and favoured Heaton in the main.

Previous seasons I've gone for the likes of Schwarzer, James etc. but always with a viable 4.5 back up.

Ah I see, so not quite a true H/A rotation. We basically have the same strategy, except you have more chance of getting it wrong and have paid 0.5 more for the privilege, and I have saved 0.5 for which I might have to spent 4 points in the future to remedy.

I think that the approach you outline makes sense, though; I can see why you would go for that. It just depends on the contextual information we are yet to receive r.e. the price distributions. It could be that, and tends to be that, I want to wring out max value from my GW1 side meaning that 0.5 goes toward squeezing in someone "better", or I'd prefer it to stay in the bank.

I'm looking forward to seeing the rest of the prices; I'm not convinced by the 4.5/4.5 though.

(n.b.: said in the tone of healthy debate, not scornful rejoinder hehe)

Upgrading a defender by 0.5m brings in more pts than getting a second 4.5m keeper to sit on the bench imo. I consider Jonty one of the best FF players around, but I'm with you on this Individual.

I must admit that I am considering a 4.0 non playing defender - which is not something I usually do. I rarely play the fifth defender and feel four can be good.

My 2 x 4.5 gk will depend alot on who is priced at that. If Butland is 5.0 and only say Ryan appeals at 4.5 I may have to go with a 4.0 non playing one. What I won't do though is spend more than 9.0 on my gk.

I've nearly always went down the road of 4.5/4.0 and generally do ok.
This year even more so that 0.5 will be essential to be spent elsewhere.

I ran all season with 8.5, as Jakupovic was my back up all season and only slotted in to start once Silva took over. Got some good points out of him, but I never did on playing him. This with Heaton instilled as my top keeper choice, but fixtures over form prevailed and Heaton was relegated to the bench for a few weeks.

I spent 9m on Foster and Heaton. Both were in my team till I played my 2nd WC in GW35.
I feel 9m is enough if you get the right players. 8.5 is way too risky.
Unless, of course, you find a regular started who will give you save points. This will only happen when there are a few injuries.
