Scout Reports

Scout Report – Charlie Taylor

Burnley completed their first summer signing with the capture of Leeds United defender Charlie Taylor on Wednesday.

The 23-year-old turned down the offer of a new contract at Elland Road, so the Clarets will have to pay a compensation fee for Taylor, who has penned a four-year contract at Turf Moor.

He looks set to battle it out with Stephen Ward for the starting spot at left-back and is relishing the prospect of trying to help Burnley build on their 16th place finish last term:

“Stephen Ward did brilliant, so I’ve got to fight hard to get in the team. But I’m sure even if I’m not I can learn a lot of things off him. I just want to improve and try to help Burnley go onto that next level, stay in the Premier League and kick on to bigger and better things.”

The History

Taylor linked up with the Leeds academy at the age of nine and progressed through the ranks to make his professional debut in a League Cup tie against Bradford City in August 2011, aged just 17.

He then took in brief loan spells at League Two sides Bradford City and York City before spending six months at Scottish Premiership outfit Inverness Caledonian Thistle during the 2012/13 season, making eight appearances in all competitions.

The young defender joined another League Two club, Fleetwood Town, on a season-long loan in 2013/14, gaining valuable first-team experience and racking up 42 appearances in all competitions, registering four assists.

Taylor returned to Elland Road for the 2014/15 campaign and established himself in the starting XI during the second half of the season, playing at both left-back and on the left side of midfield.

He produced two goals and one assist from 23 league outings before nailing down the left-back spot in 2015/16, totalling one goal and seven assists from 39 matches.

Last season, Taylor, who represented England twice at U19 level, made a further 29 league appearances, yielding four assists from left-back.

The Prospects

While Taylor is likely to compete with Ward for the starting berth, he can also operate on the left side of midfield.

Given manager Sean Dyche’s liking for hard-working wide men, he could be an option to line up in a more advanced role and challenge Scott Arfield and Robbie Brady down that flank.

Taylor appears ready to make the step up to the Premier League, with his positioning, tackling, and crossing ability among his main strengths. His physical prowess – he stands at 6ft 1in – also makes him powerful in the air for a full-back.

To add to his appeal, the 23-year-old took some set-piece duties for Leeds and could offer a left-footed option from corners and free-kicks.

Comparing Taylor and Ward’s defensive numbers from last season, it was Ward who held the edge, averaging a clearance, block or interception (CBI) every 13.20 minutes, compared to one every 20.08 minutes for Taylor.

In terms of their attacking threat, both players barely offered any goal potential, with Ward averaging a shot every 461.86 minutes, slightly superior to Taylor (469.80).

Taylor does offer going forward, however. In terms of creativity, he averaged a key pass every 123.63 minutes, while Ward only managed to create a chance every 153.95 minutes.

But it’s worth noting Taylor supplied a key pass every 76.30 minutes in 2015/16 when he registered seven assists, demonstrating he does have the ability to produce attacking returns.

He also showed plenty of intent to bomb forward and take on the defence while at Leeds. He attempted a dribble every 42.7 minutes last season, completing 60% of his 55 “take ons”.

Ward, in contrast, was far more conservative, raiding forward 134 minutes. However, he did beat his man with 66% of 24 dribbles, indicating that perhaps the deficit here is created more by Burnley’s cautious tactics than Ward’s lack of attacking intent.

Last season, Dyche’s side managed to keep a respectable 10 clean sheets, with six of those coming at Turf Moor.

England international Tom Heaton was the key target and finished as the highest scoring goalkeeper in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), while Michael Keane was the cornerstone of the defence.

But with Keane now an Everton player, the appeal of Burnley defensive assets has been diminished.

Dyche appears certain to enter the transfer market to sign a replacement, but it’s unlikely he’ll be able to unearth a player of Keane’s quality.

The Clarets’ opening schedule (che, WBA, tot, CPL, liv) also doesn’t help matters, although the more favourable home fixtures do mean defenders could be ideal for rotation pairings.

With little to choose between Ward and Taylor, it’s likely they’ll both be priced at 4.5 in FPL.

If Taylor can secure a regular starting berth, the attacking threat he showed in 2015/16 suggests he could be a factor, potentially providing a cheaper route into the Burnley rearguard – particularly as Heaton is set to earn a price hike up to 5.0.

But the loss of Keane means many Fantasy managers may look elsewhere for budget options at the back when drawing up their initial Gameweek 1 squads – the Clarets conceded exactly two goals in each of their last three matches when the England defender was missing through injury.

With Ward turning 32 next month, the addition of Taylor looks a shrewd piece of business by Burnley.

The former Leeds man appears to have both the physical and technical attributes required to flourish at this level.

Pre-season will clearly be crucial for Taylor as he tries to move ahead of Ward in the pecking order, and while that uncertainty may curb any potential investment for now, he could be a factor as the season progresses.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Of the current prices already revealed who is a bargain and who is over priced in your opinion.

And what would be realistic prices for some of the other key players that have not yet been announced.

Is Kane at 13m reasonable? Is Lukaku at 12m reasonable - or do you think 11.5m is fair? What of the Liverpool mids - should they be higher than Alli's valuation?

to get the discussion started here's some that caught my eye.

Pogba at 8m looks a steal - if ManU sign a Dm - and it looks like in Bakayoko they are close to doing just that.
Heaton at 5m could be a bargain, but it remains to be seen if Burnley can be as resilient at home without Keane.
Alli at 9.5 looks reasonable. I wouldn't say bargain - but its a good price. Factoring in Wembley I'd say that was just right.
Ince at 6.0 is absurd when set pieces will be hogged by Mooy. If Mooy is less than 6.0 then the decision on which Huddersfield mid, if any to get, is easy.

No complaints with the pricing. People who think Salah is underpriced are underrating him. 15 league goals for an AM is not something one should overlook.

FPL's biggest quality is how well they price.

Hard to say which Liverpool asset is the best. Seems to me his price should be +-0.5 within Mane, Coutinho and Firmono. See Statsbomb for an in depth analysis of Salah statistically: http://statsbomb.com/2017/06/mohamed-salah-signing-of-the-summer/ His 16/17 radar is insane (world-class): https://twitter.com/search?f=tweets&q=salah%20statsbomb&src=typd Although the level is higher in PL, differences should not be exaggerated. Average PL team is Leicester/Southampton good, average Serie A team is as good as Swansea/West Brom/Crystal Palace/Burnley. (See http://clubelo.com/Ranking)

Haha I don't think there's any danger of people thinking he's underpriced!

          Most would argue he's overpriced!

Excited by Alli at 9.5. FPL must think his form was unsustainable, or maybe it's the Wembley factor.

Seems like prices have been compressed, from what they've given us so far. Will be more important than ever to find those enablers.

Agree that Pogba seems like a very generous price. I actually think that Alli at 9.5 is a bit of a bargain too, I thought he'd be 10.0. The real question is whether Eriksen could come in at 9.0, which would be extremely tempting. Sane at 8.5 is a third option I'm looking at, and Fabregas if he gets consistent minutes.

In terms of overpriced players, I'm not touching Salah at 9.0 - I'd like all of the midfielders more, given their prices. And Ince is obviously a no-go.

Benteke at 8m seems too high. I had expected 7m with how low his PPG was last season.
The rest of the prices seem okay'ish.
13m is what is expected for Kane, Lukaku should be 12m.
Liverpoll mids should rightly be at or below Alli. The reason Allis price is that low, is because most will have Kane in their price, thus Alli will never be a (C) contender.

Lukaku, if he moves to United, has to be at least 12.0 I think - Ibra was 11.5 and Lukaku has scored 20 goals in this league for three years.

I think they've been spot on for the most part, except maybe Lacazette, but I can see why he was priced like that.

Mahrez, Vardy, Kane, Alli probably all did (haven't checked).

            Michu/Ramsey maybe?

Although this is a bit different, a big rise for an established mid/high priced player is much less common.

Ok. So Lukaku for 12.0 is a possibility then.

ManU starting fixtures looks best and I'll get Kaku whatever his price is.

Different scenarios, but Alli jumped all the way up to 8.5 going into last year (I think he was about 5.0 the previous season?). And Mahrez from 5.5-ish to 9.5 was a jump of 4.0 in a single season.

I agree with all you mentioned.

Redmond is as expected, but could be good value over the opening fixtures. If his finishing improves he could be great value over the whole season.

I thought Salah was a bit overpriced, and Gayle by 0.5m.

Will repost here as it seems relevant...

Just compared the released prices to my predictions in PoP's article, results as follows:

4 correct (Knockaert, Heaton, Maguire, Allen)
3 where my prediction is 0.5 too high (Fabregas, Pogba, King [although I did specify he would be a forward 😎 ])
1 where my prediction is 1.0 too high (Alli)
4 where my prediction is 0.5 too low (Benteke, Klaassen, Salah, Gayle)

        This tells me two things:
        1. Prices don't feel too high to me.
        2. I suck at predicting prices.

Wouldn't be overly fussed as a Chelsea fan, Bakayoko and Lukaku were the two targets I'd expressed reservations about. Sadly, it doesn't seem like negotiations for the other targets are going anywhere either, and that's a real cause for concern.

As a neutral I've enjoyed watching ManU fans say that they didn't rate Lukaku when it looked like he'd move to Chelsea and then Chelsea fans say they have reservations about him when he moves to Man Utd. 😉

He's an incredibly prolific striker with Premier League experience - that should make him the top priority for any top PL team who finds themselves top striker less (either through injury or because they texted their current striker to tell him to bog off).

Depends on style of play. I wouldn't like him at Arsenal, Liverpool or City, but at ManU and probably Chelsea too, he'd be great.

Indeed he's ideal for Chelsea, and Man Utd.

He should be ideal for Liverpool, but for some reason they don't like proper strikers, hence benching Sturridge when fit and asking Firmino to run around up top.

He's clearly a good striker, but Diego to Lukaku seems sideways. Being friends with Everton fans who have constantly moaned about his lack of harrying, and hold-up play, would be a concern as Chelsea are a team who like playing on the counter, and it can't be underestimated how important Costa has been for managing to hold a ball up in order to give Haz and Pedro the time to get up with play

          Past yes, anticipated future no.

In a midfield role where he can attack he's prolific - In Italy and for France. That's the beauty of the price - it enables those who believe he will do better this season the luxury of taking a relatively cheap punt on him.

I don;t mind that price for a top side punt. We'll know first 3 games if he's good or not as they are easy fixtures. If it doesn't work out that high price means we can move on to a 7-7.5 emerging player over those three weeks.

I'm actually more reluctant to take a cheaper punt - if it fails it can be hard to go elsewhere without a hit.

11.5 for Lukaku is fair. It's the same as Ibra, and more than Kane was priced last year - Kane, who was a settled player, had just won the golden boot in a team that finished 3rd. Not a new signing in a team that just finished 6th.
          11.5 is fair.

Alli, Pogba, Allen, Heaton have good prices!

Ince's pricing is absurd. Lacazette I think is overpriced by 0.5.

Lacazette is presumably priced for potential. He could get 25 goals so think the extra 0.5 stops people being able to have him in too easily with two other big players

One i'm interested in is what price region Gabriel Jesus will be. 10mil? Any cheaper and that could be a interesting situation.
What the prices out at the moment mean to me so far is this:
            1. Hope to choose the right Liverpool mid.
            2. Will have an initially unbalanced squad as my first draft of a team to see what I can get away with and the later making hard choices on which 10+mil players to keep and cut for balance.
            3. Kun Aguero. Can he be a trusted 12-13 mil striker with Gabriel Jesus lurking. Will wait to see other prices

Most, if not all, prices are "over" and I think this shows a change in FPL's point of view. It will no longer allow us to have 4 big names in our squad. We will need to do with 3. That is how I see it. The game is changing. We will need to find cheaper players and our overall strategy will need to change.

Sanchez, Ibra and Aguero wasn't possible last year at the start without compromise elsewhere so I see no change.

We didn't care about Vardy and Mahrez last year who where prices high which helped and Lukaku and Costa did well for their prices too

I see your point and ther is justification in it for sure. Yet of the prices declared so far, and of those 13 players who already played in the PL last season, 9 of them (except Capoue, Heaton, King and Alli) had a price decrease by the end of the year (indicating they underperformed overall) and 7 of them (except Pogba and Fabregas) are starting with a higher price then their initial price last year. These are Maguire, Sane, Allen, Redmond, Lanzini, Benteke, Llorente. Who will pay 0.5 to 1.0 more than these players were worth at the outset of the past year?

I think Lukaku should come in at 11.5m and Mane/Coutinho at 9m although I highly suspect Mane will actually be 9.5m (considering his last season tally was largely reduced due to injury and AFCON and without them he could have been competing with the top FPL mids).

Pogba looks to be a good price and possibly Sane as well although that mainly depends on if he is guaranteed starts or will be rotated.

The mid-range strikers released so far seem to be over priced in my opinion i.e. Benteke and Gayle and think it will be difficult finding a bargain 3rd striker this season.

To move this discussion on a bit, I'm trying to detect any underlying trends from the price releases so far.

Tying in with the question about pricing Liverpool's midfield, I'd have thought Coutinho, Mane and Firmino (if he's still a midfielder) should not be more than Alli (9.5) but should be more than Salah (9) purely on the basis that they're established in the PL. And yet FPL Towers have left no wiggle room here. What this suggests to me is that Towers are bunching up the better midfielders (8-9.5) giving us decisions to make on players at the same price points.

At the same time, we are going to end up with a bunch of prime forwards who will also be bunched up pricewise (10m+) and give us the feeling that they are relatively expensive compared to the prime midfielders.

We've not had any wing-backs yet but my guess is their prices will be tweaked upwards to be equal with 2nd-tier midfielders.

The overall effect will be to shake us out of the easy, lazy 343 template into considering 2 forwards and going 442 or even 352. It also means there will be few 'template teams' with seeming bargains standing out. If this turns out to be correct, it will be to the great benefit of the game as it will force us players to put a lot more thought into our squad-building.

                What do you think?

i agree. I do believe wing backs will see a price hike, but not too greatly, maybe 7.0M max (i.e. alonso)

Yes, 7m will be the max, but that brings them into the same price-bracket as Fabregas and Lanzini - for many their 3rd or 4th midfielder.

Alli at 9.5m is cheap. It's the price that will suck a lot of people in, so I can see him being the most owned player come GW1. I'm guessing that Eriksen will also be 9.5, and I'd hoped he was going to be 0.5 cheaper than alli. I'm still siding on starting with eriksen, unless high ownership forces me into the flock.

Basically you want about 0.72 points per million from each player, including captaincy. To get an average of 60 points per game week and a starting 11 costing £83m. So you can multiply that by the price and see if you think they will outperform or underperform that ppg.

                - Lacazette 10.5 - given last season's pricing of Lukaku and Costa, 1.0 too high for me

                - Heaton 5.0 - spot on

                - Knockaert 6.0 - could have been 5.5 darling but probably fair

                - Fabregas 7.0 - about right, could be gold

                - King 7.5 - right price point as a mid, not sure value is there as a fwd though with defoe on the scene

                - Benteke 8.0 - 0.5-1.0 overpriced

                - Klaassen 7.5 - was expecting 6.5-7.0, hopefully he'll live up to his price point

                - Ince 6.0 - 0.5 overpriced for me

                - Maguire 5.0 - spot on and could provide value

                - Salah 9.0 - given Couts and Firmino's starting prices last season, this guy is 0.5-1.0 over priced for me. Happy to be proven wrong though.

                - Leroy Sane 8.5 - could be value at that price point if he keeps his slot

                - Redmond 6.5 - 0.5 increase from last season is ludicrous - 0.5-1.0 overpriced for me, but could provide value if he does find his je ne se quoi

                - Allen 5.5 - ok

                - Pogba 8.0 - interested at that price and with starting fixtures - could be an early wagon

                - Alli 9.5 - could have been 0.5 higher i guess

                - Gayle 6.5 - just about right

                - Lanzini 7.0 - may be interested if he hits form, more interested in Antonio's price point which will surely be higher- 7.5?

                - Llorente 7.5 - wee bit high if Swansea, very low if Chelsea no.1

FPL Towers are not just slapping players with big price tags for fun, but weighing in the ability to pick decent squads as well. Surely?

They must be testing their overall pricing over and over making sure that FPL managers get a little bit of bang for our buck and not just fodder times 12 and 3 premium players.

Wouldn't make any sense otherwise, especially for the casuals who haven't even heard of Nyom or Yoshida.

Quite a few casuals in my work ML have limited knowledge of 80% of the PL players and having just a few players they know in their squads will not make them MORE engaged this season...

Not that I really care if my colleagues have good teams or not, but as a league admin I always try to get people's interest going. Having players they know helps a great deal! 😀

And over the years a few casuals have turned into FPL vets giving the other seasoned managers a challenge for the ML title. 🙂

I hope Kane/Kun/Luk are priced at 11-12 rather than 13.

That 73 was 2nd best in Burnley defence, 7th in all regular starters. You have to compare it in the context.

Oxford and Burke are highly unproven, and Burke had worse pass completion than Keane, in lower level. Both Oxford and Burke played in teams that averaged way better pass completion than Burnley did. Burke was 4th most accurate passing CB of Wigan.

I'm not saying Keane is better than them. You may be right. But the argument you put forward doesn't really suffice to establish that.

                        😯 😀 Alrighty.

Actually, I see that it has gone down(72.8), since I last looked at it.

But if I were and Everton supporter, and I kind of am, I would be gutted by his purchase, and at 30 million, well, I would be sick as the proverbial parrot.

The price is high for his quality, but not maybe once you factor in the fact that he's English. They're buying one of the most proven to be playable English defenders of his age. That has a price for PL clubs.

Well, I'll defer. But personally, I think that Burnley will profit, and Everton will sink. And that makes me sad, if not in an FPL sense.

Based on my best guesses of prices:

                  no - no - yes - yes - maybe

                  I'm leaning towards something like

                  Pogba - Ozil - Alli/Eriksen - Fabregas/other - Tadic/Redmond

                  10.5-9.5-9.0-9.0-7.0 = 45.0m... Assuming cheap GK's that leaves 46.0 for 5x defs & 3x forwards... So average 8x 5.5's for rest of the squad

Too many foreign players taking up space in the system, no doubt - if we had some honest, hard-working English lads instead, this year's game would have launched last November.

Had big issues earlier, Mark (around 8am). It took forever to load, but has been fine since using the site in the last 10 mins.

During the problems , I could see "Open Controls" in the bottom left corner of each post and I think that the count of the number of responses to a comment hadn't returned yet. Maybe a SQL query taking too long to return?

I'm using Chrome on a Samsung S7 with Android 7.0

I think loading becomes slower with increase in page length.

Am I the only one that sees Ramsey and Pogba as the two essential midfielders? Both with proven goal scoring ability, playing in formations that release them up the pitch, with stats that show they could have scored much higher last season and, as such, will likely have lower prices in comparison to other players of the same quality, and last but not least with a set of kindly opening fixtures?

Neither are essential, obviously. But Pogba does look very intriguing to me.

Ramsey, not so much. If I were to invest in the Arsenal midfield, it would probably be Ozil.

If Ozil and Ramsey are the same price I would agree, but I strongly suspect Ramsey will be much cheaper.

This could end up being the case, but relies on each being given more freedom to go forward. And we can't possibly say anyone's essential without knowing their price. I do suspect Arsenal will bring us some value this season though.

How can two players with such dire recent record be essential?
Ramsey improved in the 3-4-2-1, but he will have to show more to be included in our squads.
Pogba had a dire season in FPL terms.
Interesting might be the term to use.

I'm tempted by Ramsey too - great end of the season. Pre season will give us some good hints. Ramsey - based on last season should be 6.5. I anticipate 7 though...same as Fabregas.

Sigurdsson isn't as productive on the wing as he is as a CAM right? If he signs for Everton, he will probably play on the wing and not be on all the set pieces??

Rooney I don't think will start all matches, he will play all European Matches but not sure about PL.

I wasn't aware that Sandro takes Set Pieces, but Siggy is really good at them so why not him...maybe 3 of them will take turns.

Rooney for one would compete for Set pieces, especially pens. Klassen plays as a CAM so I would have thought Siggy gets pushed out to the wing

His position is key that's for sure. Behind the striker is best but he's done ok in a front 3 too. It's when he's deeper he drops off massively as an fpl option.
I'm wondering how the best 11 will fit together. The balance of the side doesn't seem right at the mo. If Koeman does something like a 4321 with Rooney and Siggy behind the striker it could be ace. Otherwise I suspect we'll see different formations and maybe too much rotation. Who knows at this stage. Pre season will show us hopefully

Koeman's team is confusing atm, it's difficult to see what he's planning. But with those fixtures we'll have to time to assess.

He's said his favourite system is 433 with two pacey wingers but also that he likes to change it depending on the opposition. This is why I'm wondering if he'll go down the Europa A and B team method or maybe just rotate more. It's a funny one cause apparently they're in for Gray at Liecester so you have to wonder where they all fit in.

12m and likely to be a differential for GW1 at least.

I really do not think having Kun and Kane up top would cripple your squad like other's seem to suggest. Could likely still field a very strong 4-4-2 like this if my price predictions are correct

                - 8.5
                - 6.0 5.5 (3*4.5 rotation)
                - Alli (9.5) Mane (9.5) Pedro (8) Stanislas (6) 4.5
                - Kane (13) Aguero (12) 4.5

Playing a 4.5m mid every game?

Because there won't be a starting 4.5m striker.

4-4-2, with the 6.0M and 5.0M defenders playing most games, the remaining two defenders taken from two of the three 4.5 other defenders
