The Numbers Game – Swansea City

Swansea City are the next side to be assessed as part of our in-depth team-by-team analysis series for members.

We start by checking in on the team statistics in an attempt to spot trends or improvements over the past 12 months before we shift to analyse player data, as we attempt to narrow the field ahead of the new campaign.

Having been ensconced in the security of mid-table in 2015/16 – claiming 47 points to finish in twelfth position – the Swans were left floundering last season. With just three wins in the opening 19 Gameweeks of 2016/17, the Welsh outfit looked doomed at the midway point until the arrival of Paul Clement.

Appointed as successor to Francesco Guidolin, the new manager chalked up four victories in his first six fixtures to steer his side out of the drop zone. Swansea ultimately clinched fifteenth spot on 41 points – seven clear of relegation, scoring 45 goals.

Penned some thoughts while waiting to download the new episode from Winterfell. All these doom and gloom hot topics about what if you don't get our essential englishman. Ya he's a great pick but let's look at the dynamics of the premium striker eco-system before we come to further conclusions. He has been in the top pick in the game for a couple of years now. But for better relative understanding, let us look at some historical data.

    The nailed Arsenal forward.

This beautiful enigmatic creature has not been available to us ever since the sweet, orgasmic left foot of a certain dutchman was donated by Le. Prof to the only manager superior to him as a retirement gift. When the Chilean midfielder plays in this role, he's a must. When the sexy-haired frenchman plays in this role, his PPG is pretty decent too. This season might see that change and the position that has given you 24 goals from an Adebayor, 2 top goalscoring seasons from the left footed dutchman and 24 goals from our favorite chilean who spent half his season on the wings last year. Le Prof has probably opened up this position this season, splashed a record fee and handed him penalties too. At 2m less, this position wasn't availalbe in the premium forward Eco-system last year.

    The Mourinho Talisman

When the Swede got injured in April, he was only a couple of goals behind the essential English forward. At that same point, The Swede's 75 million Belgian prodigy was a couple of goals ahead of the English forward at that point. The same Belgian prodigy finished 4 goals behind the our essential english forward in a much more inferior team. Considering the Swede's slightly questionable conversion stats and the Belgian prodigy now getting supplied by a superior attack, he becomes a legit pick at a million less. Mourinho talismans of past have given us 20+ goal seasons with his favorite having given us a 29 goal season too. Hell it's been a while since United have had a nailed prime forward considering Once a blue's decline and Zlatan's half season last year.

    Pep's goalscoring machines

By his own standard, the most celebrated and destructive finisher in the game had an under par season last year (still scoring 20 goals mind you). Now with a stronger supporting cast and a goal scorer to fight with, what looks like the most attacking and destructie team in the country (who have strengthened considerably) might give 2 strong options at a million and 2 million cheaper to our essential Englishman.

Let's not even talk about having a nailed option from the current champions at 2.5 million lesser and possibly, possibly even 4 million lesser (too punty, i know).

Instead let's talk about alternatives offered by his nailed AMs for 3 million lesser. You're probably not going to get more nailed on premium midfielders in the market apart from the ginger-haired dynamo in Manchester (until Liverpool's schedule clears atleast).

My only point being the premium striker eco-system has changed. We now have a nailed Arsenal and United striker in play. We might be able to pick a nailed City forward who looks considerably more destructive. I don't believe much in the new ground and slow start but in this changing eco-system, it isn't doom and gloom to not go ahead with our essential englishman. It's a risky option yes, but one that is weighted well in the new premium striker eco-system which is more crowded than it was last season.

my first thought re: Arsenal, is that Giroud is still there and he is playing really well this pre-season. he looks determined
to fight for his spot, and if he isn't sold, will Wenger just ignore him?

perhaps he will integrate Lacazette more slowly?

yes. if Lacazette starts as a lone striker, that answers the question.

could Wenger play with 2 up front? i don't remember him doing that.

You've not even mentioned the angry Spaniard/Brazilian's replacement; the injured English donkey in red, when fit; little Pea; the King of the south coast or the prolific 7ft robot. Granted, they might not all premium strikers but the options up top this year are vast. Plenty of potential to uncover a differential but also a very real risk of seeing the essential Englishmen's boat set sail only to be brought back to anchor with an early wildcard.

      Lacazette vs Morata
      ???
Both untested in PL, but both capable of turning it on from Day 1

Arsenal usually come out of the blocks firing like a good 'un, and Chelsea have strength and attack mind in that team - expect a lot of service for both

Lacazette from France, and Morata from Spain.
France is (in my mind) slightly lower than Spain in the "difficulty stakes".
Costa came from Spain and fired immediately - mind you so did Payet (Ibramovic is a special case and would probably succeed anywhere). I reckon the Spanish game is closer (in speed if not technique) to the PL.

As a result, I'm pinning my hopes on Morata (plus I can't afford the extra 0.5 at the moment)

Nice post but it's a very glass half full one, there's plenty of doubts attached to them.

Lukaku has gone to a new club for a massive fee, he's no longer a big fish in a small pond and the pressure to succeed will be on another level, you only have to look at how Pogba struggled, Mourhino's style could also hinder him in the bigger games, Jose hasn't exactly worked wonders with United's attacking players and their league goals scored total was quite low and that's with Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Lacazette has to settle quickly or Wenger wont resist the urge to have Giroud step on his toes, he can't help himself with Giroud, for example, Sanchez was flying last season as the main striker, around Christmas he brought Giroud in for games and the team lost its momentum.

Pep has two tip strikers but right now, he's having to accommodate both and he's left one out recently, very hard to predict what he'll do with both and how they'll respond.

Morata has never been the most prolific of strikers, 40 career league goals doesn't scream that and he's coming into a league which he may take time to adapt, does he have the time for that? He's replacing a man who was made for this league, will he fill those shoes?

Meanwhile, Kane is the most settled striker in the most comfortable of situations, everything is about him at Spurs, biggest negative being that hes playing his home games at a different ground (where he has scored in the past)

Very wise to explore the alternatives but it's unwise to only look at one side of the coin.

Is Sane really that much of a rotation risk?

Not as much as he's made out to be but it is true that if Pep continues with this new formation Sane could be one of the first to make way

    Who would you go for?

    A) Begovic & Fab rotation with Pogba & Ince

    B) Foster & Myhill with Redmond and Ramsey?

    Which do you prefer?

    A) DDG + Dawson (5.5 nailed Manchester United "defender" + Attacking WBA defender)
    B) Foster + Kolasinac (Cheaper WBA "defender" + attacking threat of Kolasinac)

    Thanks!

Is less than two weeks of training enough for Cedric to start?

Charlton and Best assured. Maybe he will play a front 3 with Law, Cantona and Van Nistlrooy.

    A) Alonso, Coutinho, Phillips
    B) Daniels, KDB, Fabregas*

    * Willian and Zaha already in the team.

    A or B lads?

    1. Chrisirwin01
      • 7 Years

      B. KDB seems to be on great form, Matic leaving gives Fabregas a fantastic opportunity and Daniel is a solid defender. Option A's players are unsettled either through injury, tough fixtures or transfers

It doesn't give Fab anything, Baka is a like for like replacement for Matic who last season kept Fab to the role of impact sub

I think that fpl needs to scale up the budgets & player prices e.g. Budgets from 100m to 1bn. Would make it seem more realistic

For all the chatter about Kane there is one issue that is hard to overlook

Gw 3 Tottenham Vs Burnley. Kane (C)

There are very few captain choices in Gw3 and it might not seem scary now, but when Kane is leading the captain poll with 70% of the vote, those without will have brown trousers.
Those building teams without him, will need nerves of steel, otherwise they will be backtracking and having to rearrange their squads to bring him in.

Lukaku home to Leiceter will be right up there in any poll imo

Or they'll be building their teams with plans to get him using their 2 FTs in GW3 when there is a fixture turn for Pool, Bournemouth. I for one am starting with Benteke/Defoe and Salah and 2M ITB and will change them to Kane and the next midfield bandwagon.

The key issue imo. Gw3 + gw5. Starting without Kane but I have a plan to bring him in on 2 ft's after gw2, Nick.
