The Technical Area – Firmino’s Opening Gameweeks

Heading into the 2017/18 season, the Fantasy Premier League reclassification of Roberto Firmino from midfielder to forward was a source of much chatter.

Three Gameweeks in and Firmino has made fools of those of us who shied away.

The Brazilian sits joint-top in the overall standings on 26 points, having notched two goals, a pair assists, and twice taken home a maximum bonus points haul. Indeed, only Manchester United’s Henrikh Mkhitaryan (106) leads Firmino (101) in the Bonus Points System (BPS) to date.

Over this international break, interest in the Liverpool man has been understandably high. He has experienced one price hike already (from 8.5 to 8.6), and could possibly rise again between now and the Gameweek 4 deadline.

With Liverpool in rampant form – as evidenced by last week’s 4-0 demolition of Arsenal – Firmino offers managers an opportunity to save valuable funds by downgrading a premium forward option to a lower-priced alternative who has hitherto managed to outperform his more expensive rivals.

Here in the Technical Area, we thought that this week represented a good opportunity to dig into Firmino’s game in greater depth.

Specifically, we will be exploring how his profile compares to that of other FPL forwards and whether that early-season form can continue as the campaign unfolds.

    Thoughts on this WC team?

    Fabianski (Elliot)
Alonso - Davies - Cedric - Naughton (Mee)
Alli - Salah - Pogba - Brady (Carroll)
    Kane - Firmino (Abraham)

    1.6 ITB

    could possibly do this

Jones, Mbemba, Chalobah & Lukaku instead of Alonso, Davies, Brady & Tammy but will have to change formations to a 4-3-3

It's a good team, but I think you should bench Naughton instead of Abraham

    Morning guys.

Considering Ali > Miki and upgrade Matic.....thoughts?

    Foster (Hart)
Jones - Hegazi - Bailly - Gomez (Hunemeir)
Ali - Salah - Kdb - Willian (Matic)
    Kane - Firmino (Quaner)

    Any other opinions welcomed 🙂

If i drop Kdb i'd want Miki. with Matic< Bailly and Jones i'd have 4 MUN players. What would you do?

I'd say deal with kdb first. Way overpriced this year for his current role

Really can't decide on this one...

    A - Eriksen/bavies
    B - pogba/Alonso

Eriksen looking very good and Bavies has been impressive with attack but Rose will threaten his place
Good start by Pogba but not completely sold on him yet. Whereas Alonso is guaranteed big points

B only, cause of unsettled Bavis status...

Actually really like the idea of having Alonso with a rotating cast of 4.5m defenders. If you commit to 3-4-3, that is. Then it's just Alonso each week and 2 out of 4 defenders with a decent chance of clean sheets.

OK guys, played the wildcard, but have a plan to transfer in players when fixtures become more favorable. This team leaves me 3.7 ITB and the plan is

    Week 4 (3-5-2)
    Krul // Elliot
Cédric Kolasinac Naughton // Maguire Mbemba
    Eriksen Salah Mkhitaryan Pogba Carroll
    Firmino Lacazette (C) // Joselu

Week 5 (3-4-3) Leaves 1.8 ITB (Finally Kane gets the chance to shine)
    Elliot // Krul
Cédric Maguire Mbemba // Kolasinac Naughton
Eriksen Salah Mkhitaryan Pogba // Carroll
    Firmino KANE (C) Joselu

Week 6 (3-4-3) (Everton fixtures start to turn good, Liverpool face a tricky spell) Leaves 2.6 ITB
    Elliot // Krul
Maguire Kolasinac Naughton // Mbemba Cédric
Eriksen SIGURDSSON Mkhitaryan Pogba // Carroll
    Firmino KANE (C) Joselu

    Week 7 (3-4-3) Leaves 1.1 ITB
    Elliot // Krul
Maguire Kolasinac KEANE // Cédric Naughton
Eriksen SIGURDSSON Mkhitaryan Pogba // Carroll
    Firmino KANE (C) Joselu

Week 8 Chelsea fixtures turn - Alonso in for Kola

Week 9 Spurs start a tricky run - Kane back out, Lukaku, Morata or a MC forward, frees up funds and away we go again.

Ok time to rip my plan to shreds!!

Sorry, planning ahead never works out. Pogba gets two YCs. Kola loses his spot. Firmino starts to blank. Injuries etc.

OK then, from the original WC team, what would you change?

I am keen to keep funds ITB to execute the plan or a plan, and I am prepared to take 1 or 2 hits if things do not go as outlined.

So any recommendations need to be at/around the same value.

It is my view that you have to have funds ITB if you're playing the fixtures, otherwise you take too many hits.

Who to Captain this week out of the below squad?

    Foster (Elliot)
    Valencia, Naughton, Cedric, Hegazi (Kolosanic)
Eriksen, Miki, Salah (Carroll, Loftus Cheek)
    Lukaku, Jesus, Gabbi

Lukaku would be the obvious choice?

Any advise would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks

Lukaku the safe bet. Eriksen a good differential coming off a superb couple of international performances.

    Myhill Foster

    Alonso Mee Lowe Naughton Mbemba

    Salah Alli Mooy Mkhit Carroll

    Lukaku Firm Morata

Is that defence ok? or get rid of alonso and spread the funds out over the defence?

Ok for the current run of fixtures - you might need to allocate a little more funding to your defence a bit further into the season.

Struggling to pick my starting XI this week, would appreciate input! Currently have an XI of:

    De Gea
    Dawson, Hegazi, Smith (hud), Kolasinac
    Eriksen, Tadic, Kachunga
    Jesus, Lukaku (c), Rodriguez

    Subs: Forster, Cedric, Richarlison, Ramsey.

Any suggested substitutions? I want to play them all! 🙁
    Help please!

    Anyone considering Jonny Evans?

He's at 4.9 and scored a goal last night. I didnt watch the match but a goal is a goal. Worth to mention Pulis brought in Krychowiak which is I think a massive improvement for their defensive line. Also, good fixtures ahead.

What are peoples thoughts on this (CAPS showing my variables)
Essentially I really want Kane, but not sure if I'm giving up too much team balance to get him?

    Foster/Elliott
    Zanka/Alonso/DAVIES/Bailly/Mbemba
    Carroll/Mane/Alli/Mooy/MHKI
    Firmino/CHICHA/Lukaku

    OR

    Foster/Elliott
    Zanka/Alonso/NAUGHTON/Bailly/Mbemba
    Carroll/Mane/Alli/Mooy/RLC
    Firmino/KANE/Lukaku
