Just for a moment there, we thought we had Pep worked out.

After meticulously studying his selections, we were beginning to gain confidence that his days of meddling with our Gameweek tallies were over. We were almost complacent.

The tide of goals and points produced by his Manchester City side were more than a little seductive. But they were a siren song, tempting us to sail towards the rocky outlines of Raheem Sterling and Gabriel Jesus, only to be shipwrecked by Guardiola’s teamsheet.

We always knew that Sergio Aguero was pivotal to his selection today. Many expected the start for the Argentine, but the smart money was on both Sterling and, to a lesser extent, Jesus be alongside him.

Between them, that pair had picked up 673,000 new owners who, this evening, have just a single point to show for their investment.

More significantly, some 586,000 or 11.3%, had the armband with Jesus. That included 36 of the top 100 managers heading into Gameweek 9 – the top choice among that leading pack.

Meanwhile, others had him as their vice-captain with Sterling – who was a total no-show – as their primary skipper. A double-blow.

It appears that Guardiola was biding his time, welcoming us in and reassuring us, before hitting us with a sucker punch.

So now we have to regroup, assess the damage and attempt to decode this latest situation with new data.

There were perhaps two factors at play.

For one, City faced their toughest test so far in the Champions League against Napoli in midweek.

Secondly, maybe there was a desire to give Aguero the opportunity of a start at the Etihad with the club scoring record in his sights.

In the end, he scored the goal to equal Eric Brook’s record and, interestingly, Guardiola again acknowledged post-match the importance of achieving this milestone quickly.

“Sergio has not played for three weeks and it takes time to get that little bit of rhythm back. He needs to play minutes, he did it today and maybe on Tuesday again. It was important for him to equal the record as soon as possible. When he breaks it, it will be something special.”

That would hint that Aguero will get another run-out on home turf against Wolves in the EFL Cup – the chance to break the record in front of his own supporters, rather than at The Hawthorns in Gameweek 10. Perhaps.

We can only really speculate. But what is of more concern is that, with a second tie with Napoli to arrive after the West Brom clash, we have to presume that Guardiola will have this in mind.

City sit clear on top of their group; they can afford to drop points but, after 11 successive victories in all competitions, Guardiola will not want to scupper the current momentum.

With Aguero, Jesus and Sterling – along with Bernando Silva and Leroy Sane – once described as his “five strikers”, just how will Pep now approach matters?

Previously convinced that his “central strikers” – Aguero and Jesus – would be paired together, are we now to accept that Guardiola has broken from this pattern? And if so, can we really ride with that?

Tonight Aguero is already the most bought player ahead of Gameweek 10. Meanwhile, Jesus ranks second for sales.

However, there is every chance that Aguero will be saved for Napoli while Jesus starts against the Baggies in Gameweek 10.

While we can study his selection patterns further and make assumptions, we seem unlikely to crack Guardiola’s code.

If we are to invest in City’s attack, we have to accept the anxiety and disappointment witnessed today, else perhaps settle for David Silva and Kevin De Bruyne who, to this point, seem immune to the tinkerings.

It’s becoming a fascinating sub-plot to a season that continues to test and tease.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Who knows, if you look through peps managerial history it’s hard to predict who is in and who is out.

If you’re going to take a risk on someone like Kun or Jesus then it could be a high risk high reward scenario. If you’re willing to take the plunge, be prepared for the odd bench or complete rest

He’s a tick over asset, you’ll hardly ever get double digit returns from a player like him but more likely a steady stream in a team like that.

Of course points are likely to be spread out, but I’d say he’s one of those players who advocates patience. Plus it would appear he’s one of the first names on Peps teamsheet

I think Jesus isn't worth it as he seems to be playing second fiddle to Kun but Kun is the highest scoring striker in the game, for me his pros make his con of the odd benching worth the risk.

He looked good, nice movement and wanted the ball. But he was playing really far forward and the supply to him was poor. He made many runs behind the defense that werent picked up but the passes were inaccurate so didnt reach him. If Chelsea had a Silva/De Bruyne lockpicker in their midfield Hazard would have looked very dangerous, but Fabregas was off his passing game.

That being said, I think Im ditching him for Salah to upgrade my 5th mid to Richarlison going 3-5-2

More worried about sterling atm. Someone made a good point of Sane being more nailed in the absence of Mendy as the only pacey leftfooted to cover the flanks while delphs plays more in the middle of the park in offence.. solid argument imo

Yet another weird GW for me. No goals - the last time one of my players scored was Richarlison two GWs ago (pre-international break!). A whole bunch of assists though - I don't remember ever having that many players with 5 points each: Lukaku (C), Hazard, Richarlison, Choupo-Moting, and Ayew who will come off the bench for Sterling.

Highest scorers were Elliot and Lascelles - Newcastle saved my gameweek.

    Foster Elliot
    Davies Yoshida Daniels Lascelles Ward
    Salah Sterling Mooy Gross Carroll
    Kane Lukaku Vardy
    1.1m 1FT WC still available

    So many issues...

I don't see that many issues - and nice that Mooy and Gross delivered for you this week. I'd give Vardy one more week probably.

Either Lukaku to Aguero (but only after the League Cup to see if there are any clues about City rotation), Mooy to Richarlison, or save.

I do yeah, though at the moment I'm in love with Richarlison as I got him 3 weeks ago and he's been my most consistent player.

When I got him it was more of a punt than a belief that he'd deliver consistently - I don't want to jinx it but it's not looking bad so far.

Because this is the kneejerk column, here goes... Thinking of a possible WC.

    Current team:
    Elliot, Foster
    Cedric, Monreal, Alonso, BSmith, Rangel
    Eriksen, Richarlison, Silva, Atsu, RLC
    Vardy, Kane, Lukaku

    WC to this:
    OTAMENDI, AZPI, WARD, MARIAPPA, Rangel
    SALAH, Richarlison, Silva, Atsu, STERLING
    DIOUF, Kane, Lukaku

If I keep Eriksen, I would have room for a 7.8 mid.

Just some food for thought here...

A guy who replied on my earlier post came with solid argument towards the Sane vs Sterling debate.

Since Mendy has been out, Delph has played the LB. He is righfooted and doesnt cover the left flank like Mendy did. He plays more centrally and deep while in offence. As it stands now, Sane is the only natural left footed pacey winger who can cover the left flank and fill in the void left by Mendy. For that reason he might be more nailed than both Sterling and Jesus for that matter..

    Thoughts?

          • 11 Years

That's what is nonsense. Delph is not slow. The reason he drifts into CM when City have the ball is because Pep tells him to. It's a tactical tweak and he has done it with other fullbacks too before now.

In addition, are you saying that Sterling lacks pace? Or that he can't play on the left?

The whole thing is yet another cobbled-together fantasy, a kind of Pep conspiracy theory created by some numpty that won't accept the blindingly obvious, which is that Pep loves rotation and no-one, repeat no-one is safe. Apart from the GK perhaps.

You can't have a pop at Jonty without linking your team.

That should be left to Jonty and the other people concerned. What do you have anything to do with it?

Jonty often ridicules people who give him stick for not linking their team.

Individual choice as far as I’m concerned. You’ll always get people who will look at someone’s advice and immediately try and find their team link (myself included)

But, and bear with me here, there are plenty who post on here who may not offer much in the way of good FPL advice (definitely me included!) but who can offer insight on particular teams such as, oh I don’t know......Newcastle! 😀

        1. Its fun to follow.regulars on here
        2. Its easier to.give advice
        3. Some people act as if they are superior to others. Would be nice to see some history or gw rank to back that up

I presume most people don't link team cause if you are really bothered you can probably figure out the transfer moves rivals are making by checking teams value changes etc.

o.. that surely requires a lot of effort.. besides if people have joined the ffscout group you can see all the teams there. Or am I missing your point?

Yeah I messed up but yes with a lot of effort you can make a very good guess at rivals moves. Seems pretty sad to be though if that desperate to win.

A - Lukaku ➡ Aguero own Sane and Sterling

    Or

    B - Morata
    C - Firmino
    D - Jesus

Can we trust Pep to start Aguero most PL games?

Most (not all!), yes. But there is a question mark for me in case he's decided to only go with one out and out striker from now on. I'm still getting him though, probably.

    Early thoughts on this bunch?

    Lukaku -> Kun
    Davies -> Ottamendi
    Morata -> Firmino
    Ritchie -> Gross
    ????????????

    Hart
    Davies / Cedric / Naughton
    Salah / Sterling / Ritchie / Richarlison
    Kane / Lukaku / Morata

    Elliot / Carroll / Mee / Long

      1. Is ok.
Don't know about the others I would only get Firminio on if no way to get Salah or Cout
And I think Morata was very good prior to injury - give him a chance.
One or two not great fixtures on the way but after that fixtures are sweet.
