EFL Cup Scout Notes – Kolasinac Concerns Continue

Arsenal edge past West Ham as a popular Fantasy asset is handed a first run-out in three matches, while Manchester City need penalties to see off Leicester City. Here’s the notes on last night’s Carabao Cup ties and what it could mean for a certain Gameweek in February.

It’s indicative of Arsenal’s underwhelming season that their two most owned players in Fantasy Premier League are defenders.

Nacho Monreal leads (14.6%) the way, with Sead Kolasinac a mere 0.5% behind him.

Only Monreal and midfielder Aaron Ramsey have scored more than the Bosnian’s 76 points, but that hasn’t stopped coach Arsene Wenger benching him for the last two league matches as the Gunners have returned to a flat back four.

The situation had prompted over 80,000+ managers to part company, making him the fifth most sold player heading into Gameweek 19.

The wing-back’s inclusion in Arsenal’s starting line-up for the 1-0 win over West Ham in the Carabao Cup quarter-final will most likely trigger even more sales.

Wenger has long used the competition as a chance to start fringe players and blood youngsters, and so it was again last night, with Kolasinac’s presence the one notable exception.

Add in the fact that the player who has been preferred to him in the Gunners’ backline for the past two league matches, midfielder Ainsley Maitland-Niles, wasn’t even in yesterday’s squad and the Bosnian’s immediate future is looking rather bleak.

Arsenal kick off Gameweek 19 with a visit from Liverpool on Friday and then play a further three matches in a week from December 28, so rotation will be inevitable.

How many of those matches feature Kolasinac is considerably less clear.

Giroud Blow for Gunners

One player almost certain not to play at all over Christmas is forward Olivier Giroud.

The Frenchman has been involved in Arsenal’s last five league matches, but limped off with a hamstring injury last night, with Wenger admitting post-match that the forward was now likely to miss the festive period.

“It looks like that. We have to wait. Nowadays you do the scan 48 hours after the injury. That will happen on Thursday, then we’ll have a precise kind of grade on what his hamstring is. When you listen to him, the pain is quite big, but the grade is not always linked with the intensity of the pain.”

The news, on the face of it, has little Fantasy relevance – Giroud is in just 1.3% of FPL squads, after all.

Nonetheless, it could be good news for Alexandre Lacazette, who was another of Wenger’s regulars afforded the night off.

The Arsenal boss had made it clear that Giroud would be starting more matches as the fixtures began to pile up, only for injury to now scupper that particular plan.

Lacazette has managed 90 minutes on just two occasions this season but, with Giroud set to sit on the sidelines, his 10.5% ownership will be hoping his pitch-time is a little more secure ahead of a home clash with Liverpool and trips to Palace and West Brom.

However, Danny Welbeck’s return to the scoresheet gives Wenger an alternative should he look to manage Lacazette’s minutes.

The 7.3-priced striker, who scored from a Mathieu Debuchy assist, has started just one of his side’s last 13 league fixtures and has been involved from the bench in the last six.

But the recent switch to 4-1-2-3 could allow him to play across the front three positions and also offer an alternative to Alex Iwobi down the Gunners’ right.

Hammers keep it tight

David Moyes made six changes for the trip to the Emirates, with strikers Chicharito and then Andy Carroll failing to stake a claim for a league start ahead of the rested Michail Antonio and Marko Arnautovic.

Not that the forwards had any service – in a generally dour match, the two sides managed just the one shot on target between them and the Hammers fired in only one attempt all night.

The visitors clearly suffered from the absence of Manuel Lanzini, who served the first of a two-man suspension for “successful deception of a match official”.

Arnautovic, though, emerged from the bench to shrug off the calf complaint that saw him replaced late on at Stoke.

With two goals in his last three league outings, interest in the Austrian could rise ahead of a weekend visit from Newcastle.

Defensive resilience is at the heart of West Ham’s revival under Moyes, and that at least continued at the Emirates. Angelo Ogbonna, Winston Reid and James Collins were named in the back-three, with Aaron Cresswell and Arthur Masuaku utilised as wing-backs. Joe Hart was given a run-out between the posts, with Adrian handed the night off.

Moyes’ side have conceded just once in their last four in all competitions now, including clashes with Chelsea and two against Arsenal.

With a very favourable schedule all the way up to Gameweek 30, including a double Gameweek 22, their ever-improving defence is bound to earn further investment. Indeed, Ogbonna and Cresswell are among the top six defenders for transfers in since last weekend.

A tale of two cities

There was a palpable sense of what might have been as Leicester City lost on penalties to Man City.

Pep Guardiola, chasing glory on four fronts, understandably rested the majority of his main Manchester men, while his Leicester counterpart Claude Puel perhaps surprisingly kept his big guns in reserve and only threw them on when the Foxes had to chase the tie.

Riyad Mahrez and Jamie Vardy were introduced after 57 minutes and Demarai Gray on 71, the changes turning the match and the latter pair combining in the seventh minute of stoppage time to force a further 30 minutes of action.

Gray was fouled by City sub Kyle Walker – on for the injured Eliaquim Mangala – in the area and Vardy duly converted the penalty.

But the striker, and Mahrez, then missed from the spot in the penalty shoot-out as the league leaders finally went through.

Guardiola’s most notable inclusions on the night were Gabriel Jesus (10.6%), Ilkay Gundogan and Bernardo Silva.

All three played the full 120 minutes, with Jesus’ pitch-time at the King Power likely to be good news for Sergio Aguero’s chances of starting at home to Bournemouth on Saturday.

Injury and City’s wealth of midfield options have pushed Gundogan to the fringes this season, but the personal issues keeping David Silva from the squad represent an opportunity for the German international to play a more regular role.

He started and shone in Gameweek 18’s 4-1 win over Spurs, scoring, providing an assist and grabbing two bonus points in an all-action 13-point display.

And he continued his fine form last night when he set up the opening goal for summer signing Bernardo Silva.

Gundogan costs just 5.3 and is owned by a mere 0.4%, although some 11,000+ new managers have come on board ahead of Gameweek 19, effectively doubling his ownership.

City’s currently all-conquering season, their fixtures (BOU new cry WAT) and his form make the midfielder a potentially fantastic low-cost differential, depending on David Silva’s situation.

The fact that Gundogan, along with Yaya Toure, both played out 120 minutes on Tuesday could suggest that Silva’s return is imminent.

The rest of City’s all-star starters were rested at Leicester, with Walker the only regular defender called into action, albeit due to Mangala’s head injury after 81 minutes.

That could have an impact on selection for Saturday’s visit by Bournemouth. If Vincent Kompany fails to recover in time, Guardiola could use Danilo or even Fernandinho as a makeshift centre-half.

However, the take-home from last night’s results could have a knock-on effect later down the line.

The Carabao Cup final is due to take place on February 25 – the weekend of Gameweek 28.

That week, Arsenal are scheduled to play Man City, while Chelsea are up against Man United.

If both Chelsea and Man United progress to the last four this evening, depending on the semi-final draw, there could be a scenario where all four are faced with a missing fixture in Gameweek 28.

This would occur should any of the four sides progress to the final and avoid their current Gameweek 28 opponents for the Wembley showdown.

I can totally see Salah scoring a couple but Sterling/Sané/KDB/Aguero may well end up on the right side of a proper hiding.

Yes he can but he is just not scoring against anyone 🙂 so far it seems that he is kind of 2 pointer or 13 pointer in GW. Lucky you (C) him for braces but plenty of us burned by him as a captain.
So just to sum up - he can score against anyone but he can blank against anyone as well. It is strange but that's how it looks like so far this season. For me it's too expensive lottery ticket.

So that's the point I don't get to be honest. Fair enough if you just keep him for DGW. But really do you want (C) him Vs Southampton at home. They showed pretty decent defensively at Man City and Chelsea. Same GW Hazard and Salah both having excellent fixture. Adding Man City as well.
                So next 3 fixtures I won't captain him and he's 12.8 - that's enough for me.

      Sterling (C)
      Kane (VC)

Would have been Kane if Sterling played in the Cococobana Cup, but well rested, in form, against a team he loves scoring against, it's hard to go past Sterling this gw.

Still think Kane could match him so nice to have both.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Kanexit v Kaneremaining

With 61,000 transfers out Harry Kane is among the top ten most unpopular players in FPL’s market this week.

Are you are Kanexiter or a Kaneremainer?

What are your reasons for either sticking by the Spurs man, or showing him the exit.

Burnley have played the last two/three games largely with 2nd choice options in defence (and GK for that matter). Still kept clean sheets. Tightest defence in the league along with City and Utd.

        I'm not optimistic.

I Kanexited a week early (missed his brace against Stoke) and brought him back for his 2 points against Brighton and his single point against City.

I can't keep doing the Harry Kokey with him. I think the Southampton fixture is very juicy, especially as Southampton may be missing a couple of defenders for that one. Keeping for now (having been dead set on getting rid before) and I'll probably keep him all the way up to the DGW.

I think the week to do it was last week when he was facing two bad fixtures, one good, one blank next four.

Now he has just the one bad game.

And then next week he is a nailed on striker against a weak side.

The longer you leave it the worse the move becomes I think.

I'm a Kaneremainer but admittedly mainly because I sold Morara last week so don't need the Spurs man's millions - which surely is the key reason to shift him.

Southampton have faired pretty well against the top sides apart from Liverpool this season. They struggle against the smaller teams when they have to attack and win. Not the case against Spurs.

      - means I don't need to do extra transfers to get him back in for the DGW
      - fully fit and good fixtures
      - team good enough to bench him for the blank
      - Spurs surely need to fight back after that 4-1 defeat
      - Eriksen gaining form, and that can help Kane's returns
      - don't want to lose Richarlison nor RLC at this time
      - no clear cut midfield option other than Hazard, Salah or Sterling that is making a mark to be essential
      - if Morata gets a YC this week then I'll have to ditch him too for even more hits

Kind of here at the moment. But one way I look at it is, even if he scores in both remaining games, there are value options up front and a host of midfielders from Liverpool and City that can make up for it.

Then you won't have a transfer issue when he has a blank, bank a tranfer and use two transfers to bring him in for the double.

I am starting to think there isn't really much risk in letting him go for these three gameweeks before his double.

I still have my wild card and Kane is the main problem here, with the blank and DGW coming at a bad time... Cause I need to use it before the blank.. Will need to plan swinging him in and out.. Maybe even putting him out this week for Aguero for 1 week punt, and then use the wild card for the boxing day..

3/5 double figure hauls away. That's right. 5 double figure hauls. Up against depleted Burnley defence is just the game to get his mojo back

      Remain.

I've hokey-cokied him twice this season and he's got doubled digit hauls to punish me.

I can't keep doing that, he's cost me enough transfers I'm not wasting anymore on him,

Leaving him where he is, will consider options after the DGW.

Morata is the one who needs to go, no double digit hauls since GW6.

Kanexiter here. Left a couple of weeks ago for Morata which was a bad choice, but also dropped Lukaku for Firmino which was a good choice. He can score a goal a game from here, but as long as he's not getting the 8+ hauls I'm not scared to go without him. That said, I do have clear plans to get him back for the DGW and then reassess after that.

Also, for those who are saying that he's going to end the season as the top scoring forward, I'm not denying that, but that's more of a draft league argument. You don't have to own him all season. When he's (and the whole Spurs team is for that matter) back in form, I'll jump on.

So much of this is based on ‘stats’. Jay was such a breathe of fresh air on the scoutcast and made a mockery of Jonty’s tables by saying that he watches games and selects players based on the eye test. His record speaks for itself

Very tempted to take him our for Kun(C) -4! By doing this I will have the funds to upgrade Ward to Jones and also upgrade Niasse next week (which would be very nice) so that's also part of my thinking

With the choices on offer GW20 how many will captain Kane - particularly if he blanks at Burnley?
Chelsea home to Brighton, Liverpool home to Swansea, City a good fixture @ Newcastle
Not sure about Burnley home form (Arsenal aside which they lost) they have basically played the worst away sides in PL. Were v.lucky against Stoke and not convincing v.Watford - red card probably most decisive moment.
I think he goes for me until DGW when I'll probably upgrade Lukaku. So many captaincy options and if he's not nailed captain then he should go.
I can go power 5 mid but easily get Kane back if i want to.

Still think the problem isn't so much Kane but Spurs..
Very scruffy atm. Alli distracted, Son selfish (Lamela same last week), Over fixation on rotating full-backs, Toby big miss at back as is Dier from midfield whilst he covers Toby absence.

Never owned Kane at all this season.

I was a Kanexit man long before it became fashionable for these reasons.

      1) His price tag ruins your financial mobility elsewhere in the squad just look at how far he is ahead of some of the other strikers on points, not very much considering his price.

2)It is boring owning a player that is so highly owned.

3)Although he has scared me a few times i never felt that he was essential this season he has got some decent scores granted but has not set the world on fire my the same measure.

It looks to me that more points per buck can be squeezed out of midfield and even defense that is where i am going to splash the cash.

In the remain camp. Mainly due to his nailedoness, and the fact he will still score goals and not many strikers are looking any better this season. I also like to choose the likely highest scorer from the best teams.
      I'm choosing
      haz over morata
      Pogba over lukaku
      Sterling over aguero
      Salah and coutinho over firmino
      And Kane over eriksen.
They are obviously not for ever and will change with form/injuries etc

Keeping as lone big hitter in a 4-5-1 / 3-5-2 team. With his high price, he's easy to swap out to any other FPL striker if he really looks hopeless

I think the bottom line is that there are currently no better options up front. Lukaku's looked poor (but may improve with Pogba back), Morata has fitness concerns, City rotate their strikers too much and Lacazette doesn't really look like a good option atm.

I still think Kane will end up with the golden boot, he has a double coming up, he's as nailed on as they come, can be very explosive and hasn't even had a penalty yet.

sold for Austin, and upgraded RLC to sterling to cover scores and strong mids

Calculated risk he scores or even blanks but does not haul and the blank GW of course reasons enough, price drops would mean I get him back lower than sold for DGW 22

the problem with Kane has been and always will be his price. He is SO expensive in a season when there are a lot of cheap midfield and wing back options. The relative failure of other expensive options - Sanchez - Lukaku being such a predictable flat track bully - the rotation of Aguero/Jesus has meant that he sits heads and shoulders as the most premium player in the game. He is offering points per million? Of course he isn't

But here's the rub - he is still more explosive than any centre forward in the league (bar Aguero if you can guess when it might be) and if you keep him, and you're captaining him, you're always going to get rewarded every few games or so with a big haul

The trick in selling him is where to invest those funds. Trying to catch the right midfielders at the right time. After all, only Salah, Sterling and the expensive KDB have been truly consistent over the past 3 months. Almost all of the others have taken it in turns to shine.

Personally... I am a remainer. As every week when I look at my team I just don't see a better striker to lead my line who is more likely to score at any given minute. I'm happy with my midfield - and the value currently being offered by C-Lewin in a 3-4-3 - I'm more than happy

      Kanexit.

Switched Kane for Aguero for the next 3 GWs, will switch back to Kane for the DGW. Thinking is that even though Kun may be rotated during the next 3 games, he's capable of exploding with those nice fixtures. On the other hand Kane has Burnley away, Southampton home and a blank. Kun is just a placeholder for Kane till GW22. Just 1 FT needed to switch back.

Kane remain. Last season, I rage transferred him out after back to back captain fails against Burnley and Hull City. He burned me like anything. I had to disrupt my team to get him back. Having him for a double gameweek paid off well. 62 points I think.
The problem this season is that he's 12.7 atm and not around 11.0-11.5 last season.
The discussion about him remaining or leaving is a tough one. Not having him will save you around 2-4 millions which is very useful at this stage. But the cash used instead should pay off well otherwise your season will finish. Extra 2 million can make a Ramsey into a Coutinho. So I don't see why one cannot go without Kane. However if our replacement players don't do well and he explodes, we're done. So it all boils down to one simple thing. Are you able to justify going with or without him or not?

      Kane-remainer:

Already have a 5 man midfield.

Got a cheap defence and Kane funds would be used there but currently happy to try and find value with cheaper options

Manged to keep a steady rank even with Kane and Morata blanks so don't feel need to shift when they could still do well.

Sticking with Kane, have (will have once Pogba finishes tonight) a Power 5 midfield, City, Chelsea, United (plus Burnley and West Ham) coverage at the back and 1,039 points.

I'm under no pressure to release his funds or take out the best striker in the game and replace him with someone who's not at his level.

Said it many times, take the emotion of the failed captaincy out of the equation and with 12PL goals already (only Salah has more) he's not doing badly.

I think he has to go, as Jay said on the scoutcast why would you have him if you won’t captain him.
I can downgrade him to Firmino who has Arsenal then two plum fixtures at Anfield. Then upgrade EMCM to Sterling. I’m confident this’ll get me more points as Kane has a blank.
The only reason people are keeping him is fear and if you're not captaining him anyway then how much are you really gaining?

Southampton not that easy of a game. They did very well against the top teams. Also, Spurs will rotate now that Lamela is available. He can rest Eriksen which would affect Spur's creative play. Delli Alli who was key to Kane's great returns last season is rubbish this season. I don't know why people cannot see beyond Kane and realise the problem is in the team not the man. I'd captain KDB, Salah or Hazard over him in GW 20 for sure.

      2. Freddo
        • 6 Years

Why would you have him if you won't C him?

Think that's a short sighted question, even if Jay asked it, two uncaptained goals from Kane every other week is still two goals from one of your striker spots, you can only have one captain a week, does it mean you must sell Salah or Hazard because you won't captain them While you're captaining KDB for the next 3 weeks? Same principle isn't it?

          • 14 Years

It's exactly the same principle. It's a lazy comment normally coming from someone who's sold said player and wants everyone else to follow suit.

          1. Freddo
            • 6 Years
            6 years, 4 months ago

Same principle and baffling that Jay would say it, deep down he must regret the decision, his justification for selling Kane was so that he could pump the money into his team because Kane is 'too expensive', good in theory but executed badly as he left a lot of money in the bank and added two budget players in Ricarlison and Bony into his squad so how much of an upgrade was it?

He didn't really redistribute the money and kept it there incase it went wrong so you have to ask the question, did he really believe in what he was pushing, if he did, why did he not commit to it fully?

Captained or not captained, if Kane hauls this weekend like he can, it will show why you have Kane even if you won't captain him.

Hear your point, the problem for me is that he hasn’t been returning consistently every other week whereas someone like Salah or KDB has recently. When Kane’s in my team I always captain him even though I have a lot of doubts. The blank week is the nail I the coffin. Though I will absolutely have him back for the DGW

Kane has a confirmed blank. Salah etc don't. That doesn't mean that Salah won't have a 10 minute appearance off the bench in either GW20 or 21, or indeed that any of the players brought in with the Kane money won't either.

What we do know - or at least what we can presume - is that Kane plays the next two unless he's booked at Burnley. That's actually quite handy.

Knowing where we stand with Kane isn't necessarily a bad thing compared to where we could be with every other heavy-hitters come the GW20 deadline.

Indeed, we're not thinking about it now but come GW20, then it will be clear that his blank in GW21 is actually very handy.

Full strength sides in GW19 and a few doubts over heavy-hitters and Kane would be just as coveted as a captain in GW20 as he is for GW22.

And it's Southampton at home - a team without a clean sheet in 9 and 1 in 13 who have their best defender on the bench amid speculation and both full-backs outs or doubts.

Like I say, Kane just has to avoid the booking.

I think I do feel the pull to captain him to maximise the investment but, as long as I can see that as a plan in the short-term, then I'm not panicking. If I can see a better captain for the next five GW's then it's different.

Like I say, Kane will probably walk the captain poll in GW20 (and of course GW22) because all the other heavy-hitters will have doubts over their starts - Hazard could be rested, Salah also vs SWA, De Bruyne and Sterling similarly, nobody can be certain and a dreaded 1-point captain is a possibility. Except for Kane the blank in GW21 helps to nullify that. So we're getting at least 2 points 😉

It will be Lukaku and Pogba as the likely fall back for those without Kane and they play - Burnley - the team that Kane is unlikely to score against and who drew at OT 0-0 last season.

Kane just needs to avoid a booking vs Burnley 😉

Which other 12.9 player do we have to justify keeping in?

The fact there’s a debate at all, let alone practically ongoing all season, answers the question in itself.

For 12.9mil you should be confidently handing him the armband 80% of weeks and getting returns in most of those.

Are there better strikers out there? Probably not, doesn’t mean you can’t use the money to have a better midfield and defence that overall with your chosen strikers will get you more than a Kane team.

He isn’t worth the money this season, the fact there’s a debate at all answers that in itself, there should be no debate with a player worth that much.

But it's about what you can do with the funds he frees up and what it costs to maximise it.

You can sign De Gea, Alonso, De Bruyne etc but that's presuming there isn't, and won't soon be better value options in those positions.

What if Christensen gets maximum bonus in back-to-back matches and Alonso fails to produce attacking returns?
What happens if Richarlison and Zaha or even Lingard score 2-3 goals over Xmas?

Suddenly Alonso and De Bruyne aren't value for money in comparison and the argument that convinces all to get rid of Kane is turned back on the players brought in with the Kane money.

But you could say that about anybody, any transfer you make there could suddenly be better value pops up elsewhere and those transfers/funds don’t seem as worth it.

But that doesn’t make Kanes value any better, again, for me that’s an extremely poor reason to be justifying 12.9mil.

If where you spend the funds isn’t the best value or better options appear then that’s unfortunate, that’s fantasy football, but that doesn’t improve Kanes value any.

Just because you sell Kane doesn’t mean you need to spend all the money, if Rooney, Christensen, Zaha and Lingard all performed well over Xmas there’s nothing stopping someone banking Kanes money and putting those players out on the pitch.

Just because you have the money in the bank doesn’t mean you have to spend it, that’s not a reason to be keeping a player at 12.9mil.

Sure. I'm not arguing that Kane is not delivering value for money, I just think that spreading his funds across 4-5 players who may also not deliver value for money relative to alternatives in their positions nullifies the benefits of selling him somewhat.

We could end up applying the same principle to De Bruyne if Zaha is matching him, or Alonso if Chelsea don't keep clean sheets and several 4.5 defenders are. Or if Pope keeps matching De Gea for points per match.

It can all change very very quickly, meaning that some of the "value" signings with the Kane money may not remain value relative to alternative options.

Then what, we all have 2-3 million in the bank but no Kane?

But no Kane wouldn’t be an issue if he still hasn’t picked up.

I just think we’re ‘looking’ for reasons to justify keeping him, at 12.9mil I think the reasons should be smacking us in the face week in week out.

Like I said initially I think the fact there’s even a debate answers the question on its own, the only debate on a 12.9mil player should be which weeks don’t we stick the armband on him.

Or maybe me just being the fantasy football peasant that I am is completely missing something, which could be highly likely!

"But no Kane wouldn’t be an issue if he still hasn’t picked up."

I totally agree. I'll be looking again after GW22 for sure.

I just think in GW20 and 22, Kane is too strong as a captain relative to other heavy-hitters.

However, I think getting rid and presuming he won't pick up is very dangerous. For me, he's still shown he's the most explosive player in the game.

We can talk about playing without fear but it is a factor.

If Kevin De Bruyne scores back to back I don't like it, but I don't fear it will continue. If Kane scores back to back, I panic. We know he can be relentless and devastating, so fear is a factor as a non-owner, like it or not.

I think for Kane to score back to back double figures means Spurs to win bya two or 3 goal margin for a good run of games. I don't see that happening any time soon given their form, fatigue and bad fixtures. City on the other hand are very capable of scoring 3 and more goals for a run of games and we have seen that already. KDB will always be involved. 1 game he will get a goal, another game a couple of assists. Baps always follow. So it is not far fetched for him to get consistent explosive returns.

Earlier this season, Kane scored 4 braces in 6 game-weeks, against Everton, West Ham, Huddersfield and Liverpool.
However, he then missed GW10, and has only scored one further brace plus two single goals in the 8 matches since then. Has he been carrying an injury?
The question is, how soon can he regain his pre-GW10 form?
If and when he does, he will become essential again.

I've read your comments with interest, I think it all depends on your squad. I don't want to lose Kane because I know what he is capable of, he's a proven premier league striker and has the potential for big hauls in FF. Spurs have looked out of sorts this season, this has been reflected in some disappointing 'captain' displays but that can be said every season about most coveted players at periods in the season. The fact remains, if you have a strong squad, you can easily keep Kane without feeling the pinch. Again that depend on your squad. I feel that I have enough cover for baron spells. If I felt that his cost could be put to better use to increase my ranking, I would do it. I don't feel this and I think there are many that don't feel the pressure. This game is a lot to do with confidence and I would feel less confident without Kane in my team. You feel differently, therefore, you should go with your hunch

I think the pro-Kane camp is dwindling by the day.

Your steadfast support for Kane this season is starting to be reminiscent of when you famously tried to justify going without Aguero. It's getting harder and harder to back Kane with all those blanks and when elite managers in the top 150 (like Jay) are ditching him.

I will have a little wager with you, Mark. I bet Gray at Watford will comfortably outscore Kane over the next 3 gameweeks at the lofty price of £6.3m.

Firstly, my team is not rubbish with Kane. Ten green arrows in eleven and I'm very happy with my XI for GW19.

Secondly, as I've mentioned. Look at GW20 and consider the captain picks that are certain to start.

Third, I'm selling for GW21 and getting back and captaining for GW22 - hopefully for free. So the blank isn't an issue.

Fourth, if we all get him back and he produces a big GW22 score, we'll all be keeping and this argument/theory will be forgotten.

"...what you can do with the funds he frees up and what it costs to maximise it."

The second part of that is the key in my view. Triggerlips once wrote that "with hits, the points lost are certain but the points regained are uncertain" and whilst that's a truism it is also a good reminder.

Is there anyone that doesn't want Kane for GW22? I suspect not. In which case we are talking about GW19-21, 3 games. You can't really afford to re-distribute funds in that period anyway. Had I been going to remove Kane it would have been last week and Lukaku and Aguero were the only players I'd have considered. Lukaku's form had been too patchy and Aguero's rotation risk wasn't something I fancied over the festive schedule.

Those moves (Kane ➡ Lukaku or Aguero) could still be made, both have decent fixtures and no GW21 blank. But Kane's next 2 fixtures are far from awful (especially GW20) and switching him out and back would effectively cost me 8 points. If I knew for sure that Aguero would start the next 3 games then I'd probably consider that risk worthwhile. But I don't. So Kane will stay for me and be benched in GW21. 🙂

That's less of a problem if you are managing your transfers well.

Unless you have fires to put out, the Kane Hokey Cokey seems pretty straightforward. Especially if you downgrade a premium mid in 22 to a West Ham mid to free up the required funds.

I manage my transfers well enough, thanks for asking. 🙂

There is a DGW to prepare for. To me that is more important than playing the hokey-cokey with Kane. Sure, I could do the Kane switcharoo with no hits but it would leave me less well placed in GW22. Others rate that DGW as a damp squib but I am quite bullish about it.

Seeing that I have transfers needed for that and think it's a more important priority then the Kane moves would have to count as hits for me.

This. Hazard will be a candidate to drop if he blows hot and cold over the next 3 GWs. As long as we are able to bank a transfer in 21 the cost of doing an extra transfer in 22 isn’t material imo.

      Sold him already.
Bought Lacazette (no Giroud gives him more minutes) and KDB (my cap for Bournemouth).

Earned 0,2. Points prediction next 3: 2 (Son will score), 6 (7) (one goal), 0 (blank gameweek)

Can bring him back after those games with - 4 for 12.6.

Burnley solid at home this season (never lost more then 1 goal a match).
Smashing?? Not likely. They are not Stoke, they wont play open game like Watford or Liverpool. They will defend with 10 men.

This is the case of Aguero last season. Sticking with him as a FPL legend (golden boot, penalties taker etc.) despite his lack of form. Maybe I am wrong, but this is the way I see it.
      Good luck to all!

Right I have decided to take a big leap of faith and dispense with the services of Kane. I never thought I would do this. Kane destroyed the end of my season last year with a number of excessive hauls. Unfortunately my 3 Spurs players were Davies, Eriksen and Ali. Not having Kane shut the door firmly shut on my hopes of a top 10K finish which was looking achievable going into the last few weeks. Due to the scars this left, I decided that I would have him this season from the start and captain him every week which I have done. However the bottom line is, he isn't justifying his price and is poor value. 18 gameweeks in and he's averaging 5.7PPG which isn't enough for his price. 18 weeks is a big enough sample to judge Kane's returns. So I have decided to let Kane go and invest the money into midfield and defence which can be considerably strengthened with the Kane money. There will be weeks where I wished I had Kane of course but the stronger squad overall should compensate.

Kane remainer. Chose to ditch Morata instead, and have Hazard, and a decent selling value that affords me this option. Kane has more potential for big hauls than any other forward right now. Yet, I can easily see the rationale for selling him, too. His value is poor.

      Kaneexit.

      Reasons:
-Spurs as a unit is in terrible form and seem to have lost purpose. Its not just about Kane.
-Spurs fixtures are difficult apart from the DGW until GW28. I wouldn't want to captain Kane in any of them.
-He has a blank coming up in a time when we need a strong bench. Can't afford to have 12.8m on the bench.
      -He is on 4 YCs

I have strenghtened my midfield and defense considerably and I am planning to use the FH chip to load on Spurs and Westham players in the DGW.

But that means you'll play a bunch of 3-4p average players on your free hit. Remember that Free Hit is about making the max points yield compared to your own non-Free Hit team. Really don't see how that FA Cup week is the best option for that if indeed the strong teams won't be playing. Id much rather triple up on spurs when they have a double.

But we'd have to get through GW28 without players from those four teams, only to have to get them back for the DGWs.

You can ride it out and be 4-5 players short, but not sure the 11 will be that average - Liverpool and Spurs will play and Mahrez and Vardy have Stoke City at home.

Playing the Free Hit GW22 is riding the gauntlet for rotation and injuries between matches two days apart.

"Playing the Free Hit GW22 is riding the gauntlet for rotation and injuries between matches two days apart.". This is my only concern with the chip. But as Brosstan said, I don't see the gain in loading up on mediocre players in GW28 if all the big boys don't play.

Leaves me with Bobby as lone Striker (+ Austin, Crouch)
MF now much better with KdB, Sterling, Haz, Pogba, Zaha.

He’s gone for me. At least until GW22.

I’m taking a punt on a budget striker in his place, combined with upgrading my 4.5m mid to a big hitter.

I can do that while still having a big hitter up front (one of Kun, Lukaku, or Morata) and a midfield of KDB, Hazard, Salah, Coutinho and Sterling. Since that midfield contains two or 3 functional strikers anyway, I’m happy.

I think people are looking too much into the fixtures i think

there are a number of players on this game that can and do score against anyone...Kane, Aguero (past seasons), coutinho, hazard...to name a few

ive always looked at fixtures in the past and because i am an overthinker i sub or transfer out the better player since they have a tough game and then my 'lesser' thinker competitors who leave them in get a mass of points, we see it time and time again..
...some players are untouchable each week and all it takes them is one chance and they put it away, so Kane to remain!

It’s the perfect form vs fixture debate between these 2.

Could work out well. Fixtures are great.
Don’t think Austin will score against Spurs & United away.

The way Soton setup against the Top 6 is way different when they play the others.

I considered Gray but no Watford fan I speak to rates him or thinks he's capable of holding the ball / leading the line which is why Troy Deeney has played despite being terrible his season.

Austin could be a great shout this weekend, fixtures are tough after that.

Depoitre is in good form and has some very nice fixtures with a 5.2 price tag.

Here's a bold one playing as devil's advocate - if Sanchez goes to city in January to replace Aguero, just before the transfer goes through is there a case for bringing him in to make a De Bruyne, Sterling, Silva, Sanchez Man City midfield 4, and roll with that for a few weeks at least?

    1. DV8R

I don't think that will work for as long as you think. I assume that if you already have 4 players, when you try to make a transfer you'll be forced to take one City player out.

      1. The Rumour Mill
        • 7 Years

Yeah you would have to remove a city player if you wanted to make a transfer, but with those 4, why make a transfer? 😛

I'm wary of selling Richarlison though, to be honest. The fixtures are still very decent and I think he's been unlucky so far, in terms of others in the team getting sent off or not converting his assists.

Is your squad value affecting your decision to keep Kane?

Wondering how strong the correlation is between a strong squad value and keeping him.

Intuitively it would make sense, as the lower your total budget, the more he hurts you. (Given he'd have a proportionally higher cost...)

I said it before and ill say it again, correct me if Im wrong....

Kane - Kun as i wouldn't Cap Kane but will 100% Cap Kun this weekend - Followed by Kun - Kaku the following week who has 3/4 home games..

followed by the free hit chip on DGW to bring Kane back in and not miss out.

Kaku for the next few weeks, with Pogba back and a bit of form seems a no brainier all together, and actually a differential.
