Scout Notes – City Clinch Wembley Berth

Manchester City reach the Carabao Cup final with a scare or two along the way as Pep Guardiola’s side eventually saw off Bristol City.

Goals from Leroy Sane, Sergio Aguero and Kevin De Bruyne saw City win 3-2 on the night, and 5-3 on aggregate.

More pertinently, from a Fantasy Premier League perspective, the league leaders will now participate in the Wembley final on Sunday February 25 – the same weekend as Gameweek 28.

However, the Premier League have confirmed this morning that City’s clash with Arsenal will currently remain in Gameweek 28 and be moved to Thursday March 1.

This could yet change, though, should Pep Guardiola’s side progress to the FA Cup fifth round and then be taken to a replay – essentially, that’s what the midweek after Gameweek 28 will be used for.

If Chelsea win tonight’s semi-final against the Gunners, then their Gameweek 28 match away at Man United will also have to be moved.

Judging by today’s announcement that could take place on Wednesday February 28 and also remain in Gameweek 28. Again, that would change if either side required an FA Cup fifth round replay further down the line.

Speaking post-match, the City coach made it abundantly clear that this season is all about trophies.

“I know we will be judged by the trophies we win. The important thing for me is to be there, keep going every game and Sunday we have a final against Cardiff. We want to keep going in FA Cup and try to keep going in the Premier League.”

That was reflected in the team he picked for last night’s trip to Ashton Gate – there were just the two changes from the weekend win over Newcastle, with only goalkeeper Ederson and Raheem Sterling given a rest.

That was great news for the 37% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers who have made the England midfielder the side’s most owned player, particularly as Sterling had started 13 of the last 14 league matches as well as featuring in the FA Cup third round and the first leg of the EFL Cup semi-final.

Not that others from Guardiola’s squad haven’t been busy, with De Bruyne a league ever-present this season, Aguero on a run of 10 consecutive starts in all competitions and Sane having started the last six straight matches.

However, the fact that all three scored – De Bruyne and Sane also supplied an assist, with Bernardo Silva laying on the other – suggests that fatigue isn’t an issue.

Yet while Guardiola’s rotation has been relatively limited of late, there’s no doubt that his side now faces an increasingly hectic schedule that may force him to shuffle his pack from time to time.

From this weekend, their upcoming calendar potentially looks like this:

28 January – FA Cup Fourth Round vs Cardiff
31 January – Gameweek 25 vs West Brom
3 February – Gameweek 26 vs Burnley
10 February – Gameweek 27 v Leicester City
13 February – Champions League Round of 16 v Basel
*17/18 February – Weekend of FA Cup fifth round
25 February – Carabao Cup Final
1 March – Gameweek 28 v Arsenal
4 March – Gameweek 29 v Chelsea
7 March – Champions League v Basel
12 March – Gameweek 30 away v Stoke City
*17/18 March – FA Cup Quarter Final

* Fixture not yet confirmed

Should they continue to progress in the FA Cup and also have their league match with Arsenal remain in Gameweek 28, City could essentially be facing a stretch of 12 matches in 49 days, or more or less one every four days.

Guardiola’s clear intent not to go a second season without a trophy has meant fringe players such as Yaya Toure, Ilkay Gundogan and Eliaquim Mangala have barely been used to take the strain off City’s key assets, with only the German midfielder brought on last night – in place of Aguero – after 82 minutes.

The Argentine forward has certainly prospered in recent weeks. He has eight goals in six January appearances across three competitions, but his 25.2% ownership will be bracing themselves for rotation once Gabriel Jesus returns from a knee injury in the near future.

As for the 12.5% who have stuck by Sane, there appears little doubt that their man is back to his best following a mini-slump in form – the German has now produced returns for four straight matches in all competitions.

Having been used relatively sparingly over recent weeks, Sane looks likely to feature heavily for the foreseeable future, although Guardiola might not see it that way.

It is at the back where issues are mounting up.

City have now played six matches in January and failed to keep a clean sheet in any of them.

Centre-halves Nicolas Otamendi (32.3%) and John Stones (4.4%) have started every match this year, with Kyle Walker (12.8%) starting four and featuring as a sub in the other two.

As the most owned defender in FPL, Otamendi in particular is starting to try his managers’ patience, with a mere three points to show from his last three league starts. Indeed, he is the most sold defender ahead of a plum home clash with West Brom, traded out by over 36,000 owners.

Unless City can get their defensive act together again – and their immediate schedule (WBA bur LEI) does at least offer some promise of that – sales in their key backline assets would not be a surprise.

Skipper Vincent Kompany was an un-used sub last night and is an obvious candidate for inclusion should Guardiola seek alternative options, with Otamendi’s first Premier League rest perhaps imminent.

For now, it’s all a lot of ifs and buts, with the first rotation hot spot likely to come around the Gameweek 27 visit of Leicester that precedes their Champions League trip to Basel just three days later.

    Better option long term?

    A) Mahrez & Wilson
    B) Vardy & Shaqiri

    I can either do

    1) Arnie to Mahrez this week and DCL to Wilson next
    Or
    2) Arnie & DCL ➡️ Shaqiri & Vardy (-4) this week

    Appreciate your thoughts!

So as it stands man city play
    Feb 25 cup final arsenal/chelsea
    Mar 1 Arsenal
    Mar 4 Chelsea
    Mar 7 Cl second leg
    Mar 10 gw 30

5 games in 13 days over 3 competitions is going to mean some serious rotation and with Jesus back.

Only time will tell but I wonder if Sanchez's arrival will detract from, rather than boost Pogba's appeal?

Sanchez occupies that space drifting from the left, so could either negate the need for Pogba to get forward so much, or just mean more assists for Pogba.

    Not clear cut for me.

Mkhi literally hasn't played a game yet. We don't know where he'll play, IF he'll play and it's not like he's riding on a wave of good form at United.

Much prefer Lil Shaq or even a Willian punt.

Not a fan of Shaqiri as a fantasy asset to be honest - seems to go missing way too often, not bad for the price but I fancy gambling on something better. Would love to take a shot at Willian but his place never seems secure and as it stands Chelsea still have a blank so he's not ticking enough boxes for me.

I agree it's risky to jump straight in on Mkhitaryan but he's a quality player who I fancy to flourish. I could well get stung badly but I'd prefer to fail whilst following my own bad instinct than to fail because I opted for safety 🙂

    A) Arnautovic -> Shaqiri
    B) Arnie & Son -> Shaqiri & Sane (-4)

Alexis: "Should I run my contract down and leave or should I commit to Arsenal?"

Thierry: "Get away from that old man before he wrecks the rest of your career. Don't you want to win some major titles before you retire?"

Alexis (to a journalist): "I had some fantastic advice and support from an Arsenal legend, Thierry Henry, who made a similar move at this stage of his career."

Thierry (to a journalist): "I advised Alexis to stay at Arsenal and told him how much I regretted moving to Barcelona and winning those titles. Do you think I'd imperil my well-paid status as an Arsenal club ambassador?"

AS two days ago: "I remember today, a conversation I had with Henry, a historic Arsenal player, who changed club for the same reason and today is my turn."

TH yesterday: "I know I don’t need to explain this to the majority of Arsenal fans but contrary to speculation at no time did I tell Alexis Sanchez to leave Arsenal. I had no idea he was going to sign for Man Utd until I saw it on the news like the rest of you."

AS today: "I want to clarify that Henry never told me to leave the club, it was a personal decision ... he LOVES the club and someday it would be nice to see him as the arsenal coach because he loves the club ..."

    The case for keeping Pope.

Yes, there has been some regression in Burnley's CS but they have just been through though fixtures (2xMU, Spurs, Pool). Except City in GW26 there is basicly a sea of blue fixtures coming up. Burnley are one of the most consistent teams in the league, GKs have been fantasy gold consistently since their promotion in 14/15. Just seems like a mistake to abandon Burnley GK before they have a good run once more.

When Heaton is back I'll just swap straight to him (4.7 now), if needed I'll just spend 4 points. Pope is soon 4.9 now so no need for extra cash.

Yup I’m keeping him till he looses a spot might mean I won’t have a keeper for one week but I’d really like to wait and see who the best option is.
Pickford was looking like the go to option last week but no so much now.

    Ryan Krul
    Alonso Naughton Ogbonna Kenny Rangel
    Salah Son Sterling Arnautovic Lingard
    Kane Aguero Quaner

For GW25: Son, Arnautovic and Lingard OUT for Hazard, Shaqiri, and Milovojevic (4 point hit)

For GW26: Kenny OUT for Smalling

    Good plan?

Well after seeing my beloved Manchester United bow out to the mighty Bristol City, I decided to go back and see last night's 2nd leg at Ashton Gate to ironically support the Robins against our "bitter" rivals but mainly to watch live football, here's what I found:

Bravo - uncomposed, looked surprisingly nervous and what little he did have to do, he did that relatively poorly. FPL note - Ederson is safe.

Walker - spent 95% of the game camped in the Bristol half, overlapped with regularity and was fairly solid. FPL note - not worth the outlay.

Stones - looked poor, not found his pre-injury form and Man City fans were clearly exasperated with him during the game. Had one good chance to score in the first half but fluffed his lines a little. FPL note - not in any rush whatsoever to get him in.

Otamendi - Was quite impressed by him to be honest, his passing distribution was top notch and at no fault for any of the goals. Got up for corners as usual. FPL note - keep for WBA and re-assess, potential value elsewhere.

Zivchenko (sp) or as I like to call him, KDB mini me - Quite impressed with him, solid on the ball, had a slightly more defensive role, probably as a result of Walker pretty much playing as a right winger. FPL note - meh

Generally I was surprised at how bad Man City defended for a game where they were and did dominate the game, they can be pressured and forced into making mistakes. I know this was a cup game but for the money they have spent, it was woeful and from a FPL note, I will ship after WBA with such a hectic schedule coming up and the likes of Laporte potentially coming in and Kompany to take a few games here and there, rotation will be prevalent.

KDB - He really is World class, was a pleasure to watch him do his thing, like an orchestra conductor. The bloke never stops running and sprays the ball around with pin point accuracy. If he gets injured then I really believe Man City would crumble, he's that good. FPL note - not worth considering in my opinion, he's the assister of the assist and gets reduced to the odd long shot here and there.

David SIlva - Similar to KDB in which his passing is on point and I was surprised with his agility. Got into more advanced positions than KDB and fed Sane all night and looks potentially good value at his price. FPL note - Potentially good value but would wait to see if his off field problems improve, which clearly is more important, really like him as a player.

Sane - Poor, really poor, couldn't keep the ball under control, had so many opportunities to whip the ball in or get a shot off but he would lose control of his feet and have an absolute mare. Yes he scored but that was after Bristol City had about 5 chances to get rid of the ball, Sane won't face that in the PL/CL. He came over and gave the sssshh finger when he scored which was embarassing, Sergio Aguero saw what was going on, peeled off from the celebrations and apologised to the fans, what a class act he is. FPL note - avoid.

Sergio Aguero - his movement off the ball is World Class, takes 2 steps away from a defender and suddenly out of nowhere he's got 4 or 5 yards space. Good finish and it's that movement which creates the goal. I was really impressed with him and Pep had clearly told him to not come deep as much to try and pick up the ball. FPL note - I'm sticking the armband on him for sure, whilst Jesus is out, he looks essential to me.

Aden Flint - If Bristol City get promoted then looking way ahead I would look to get this guy in my team if he comes in at 4.5m. Imposing at corners, defensively sound and a great header of the ball. When chasing the game, he was moved upfront, if this is a regular thing and not just cup related then he could be a gem but appreicate that to be highly likely. Potential BPS monster.

Besides the first paragraph, I would have used about the same words, about all the players. And I support neither. I actually dislike United more than City ^^ So the analysis looks dead on to me.

If Flint was mentioned, we probably should visit Reid as well. He was next best on the BC team ^^

Thanks for the report. I watched the match on TV and I thought Sane looked great. I think you are too much affected by his disrespect for the fans, he was in or around the box a lot, took defenders on, and generally looked confident and likely to get goals and assists.

Nice of you to make an assesment and i generally agree with you. But people should be more aware that City´s playing style both hides their flaws in the back line but also producing them at the same time. With both Silva and de Bruyne playing as central midfielders they leave Fernandinho to do the defensive job and while he is good on certain things he does give away the ball under pressure and sometimes is left exposed positionalwise. Pep wants the cb to pass the ball and be creators, and they are good at it.Both are good in defending on the front foot. But when it comes to the department of actual defending (when you are forced to turn your head against your own goal, both Stones and Otamendi, especially Otamendi, are awful). And it might have to do with Pep obsessed with playing a midfielder at left back, the reason why he can is that they don´t need to defend much. My point is actually that it is no real surprise to see them let in goals.

A little surprised by the Sane comment. I thought he looked really threatening and was running at ds all night.

I tend to agree with you re KDB value comment. There are too many cheaper options matching or bettering him for points.

Kun - in form but apart from the NEW game, he's hardly been tripping the light fantastico a la Kane. Avoid him.
