Scout Notes – Premier Pair Make Progress

Huddersfield Town need extra time to ensure that their FA Cup journey goes on – and another Gameweek 31 fixture will go ahead – while a forgotten striker option finds some form as Swansea City destroy lower-league opposition.

The most notable issue to arise from Huddersfield’s 4-1 win at Birmingham last night was that it now guarantees a third fixture will be played in Gameweek 31.

The Terriers had to wait until extra time to secure their place in the fifth round and a home tie with Manchester United.

That, in turn, means one of those sides will be able to fulfil their league fixture when the quarter-finals take place over the weekend of March 16.

Huddersfield are due to entertain Crystal Palace in the league on that date, while United travel to West Ham.

As both the Eagles and the Hammers are already out of this season’s FA Cup, one of those fixtures will now join the other two matches – Liverpool v Watford and Stoke City v Everton – already guaranteed to take place during Gameweek 31.

Terriers coach David Wagner made five changes to the side that lost at Old Trafford on Saturday, but it was still a team packed with regular starters.

Striker Laurent Depoitre and defender Christopher Schindler missed out through injury, but Aaron Mooy and Tom Ince were recalled in midfield, with the latter’s shot leading to an own goal that leveled the tie.

Despite incessant pressure, Huddersfield couldn’t find a winner in 90 minutes, although they put the tie to bed early on in extra time.

Steve Mounie, from a Mooy assist, and Rajiv van La Parra scored within seven minutes of the restart before Ince rounded off the win a minute into the second period.

Abraham stakes his claim

At the start of Gameweek 12, Swansea striker Tammy Abraham’s ownership peaked at just under one million managers, and his price at 6.0, in Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

Fourteen Gameweeks, no goals and six price drops later, just over 200,000 managers remain.

Four goals in eight Gameweeks made him one of the leading early-season budget strikers in FPL; a mantle that team-mate Jordan Ayew is currently trying on for size.

But Abraham’s star turn in last night’s 8-1 demolition of Notts County looked particularly well-timed in light of the season-ending injury suffered by Wilfried Bony in the Swans’ 1-1 draw at Leicester City last weekend.

Speaking before the FA Cup fourth round replay, manager Carlos Carvalhal was happy to talk up Abraham’s prospects.

“Tammy Abraham is an interesting player. He has only been training with us for something like a week and a half after injury. Wilfried’s injury will give more opportunities to him and he is someone we believe in a lot.”

The striker responded with an eye-catching first-half display against the League Two side, scoring two goals and setting up another as the Swans went into the interval 4-1 up.

Abraham then capped a fine display with an assist for the final goal.

Carvalhal’s post-match summary acknowledged the striker’s performance, though he also made it clear that he expects more.

“He is progressing – but he can do better in my opinion. He knows he can do better. If you ask me between now and when we arrived has he progressed, he has but I’m still thinking he can do better. We will try to push him to do better.”

Ayew’s four goals in the last eight Gameweeks is likely to keep him in the side for the short term. However, Abraham will need monitoring, particularly if he is given a chance to take advantage of his team’s excellent schedule.

Swansea entertain Burnley this weekend before an FA Cup fifth round tie at Sheffield Wednesday.

The fixtures after that (bha WHU hud SOT mun wba EVE) could well decide their Premier League fate and if Abraham can rediscover his early-season form, it could revitalise a side that has managed a joint-worst 19 league goals thus far.

New signings Andre Ayew and Andy King were cup-tied and unavailable to Carvalhal, who made seven changes to the team that drew at Leicester. That saw him revert to a 4-4-1-1, giving Luciano Narsingh an opportunity to impress on the right flank.

The Dutch international set up three of the Swans’ four first-half goals as Abraham and Nathan Dyer – again playing up behind Abraham – scored two apiece.

Kyle Naughton also boosted his stock with a second-half goal, at a time when Fantasy managers will be assessing the merits of the Swans backline.

Wayne Routledge, Tom Carroll and debutant Dan James rounded off the scoring, with an assist coming from Routledge.

Swansea are now one win from an FA Cup quarter-final place.

Should they beat Sheffield Wednesday in the fifth round, that would mean their Gameweek 31 home match with Southampton would have to be rescheduled.

And even if they don’t, the league match might still not go ahead as the Saints also remain in the FA Cup.

The south coast side take on West Brom in the fifth round. Should the Baggies be knocked out, their Gameweek 31 trip to Bournemouth would then be confirmed.

A reminder that Ben Crellin’s Twitter Moment provides full detail on the scenarios that could develop for Gameweek 31 and beyond.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Whipping boys

Among the issues discussed last night was targeting whipping boys – clubs that are in an abyss where they are shipping goals for fun and are struggling to score.

Who do you think will be the whipping boys for the season run in?

Can Everton turn it around and avoid this dubious honour? Or are Huddersfield the real whipping boys?

Are you now actively targeting players that face such awful defences and attacks?

Given Brighton's results vs the big teams so far, that's not a bad shout. We didn't really dwell on that.

As we discussed last night, it's almost as if Hughton is concentrating all effort on the winnable home matches. It might just work!

I think this'll be the case for a lot of the worse teams. They're going to have to get results vs their rivals, so I wonder if the effort will really be there in the tougher fixtures.

Would you therefore play Diouf this week?

He's currently on my bench with Ibe and Wilson my preferred options v Huddersfield.

Other attacking options can't be benched - Hazard, Salah, Sterling, Bernardo, Kane.

I'd bench Diouf. He only played 7 minutes against Bournemouth so is therefore a rotation risk and could only get you 1 point. Whereas Ibe and Wilson are at least nailed on to play and have a good fixture

Its a gamble from Houghton for sure! A terrible performance against Liverpool springs to mind although the Chelsea result was not a good reflection of Brightons play in that game.

Yeah several weeks ago I noticed Brighton and Huddersfield had fixtures that rotated very nicely, so bought in Schindler to join Duffy as my defensive rotation in a 4-4-2. Its been like having a dead position ever since. Awful.

I actually suggested them as a joke... but Chelsea in the past have had a habit of imploding when civil war breaks out there. It's not crazy if the players have stopped playing for Conte (I get the feeling Batshuyi and Luiz are popular with the players and I think Conte has humiliated them to a degree) and are just waiting for Godot (i.e. Guus Hiddinck). They were appalling vs Bournemouth and vs Watford.

I'm not betting against BFS, and even though Huddersfield and Brighton are poor teams they are clearly still up for the fight. I don't see any of these as an easy source of FPL hauls.

I don't think there are any whipping boys this season. Certainly no one as bad as Villa or QPR from recent seasons. There is currently an unbelieveably close relegation battle going on between the teams from 12th-20th, and you could even make a case that those in 9th-11th aren't out the woods yet either. I believe these teams can all take points off each other, which makes their games hard to predict.

So no obvious whipping boys yet, but if I had an in form player from the top 6 facing a team from the bottom 9 teams, I would be relatively confident of an attacking return at least.

Weaker teams will ship less goals as we get closer to the end of the season. Clubs in the bottom half will try and grind out for draws and 1-0 wins.

I think the top 6 will ship a lot of goals as they take risks for the win.

I don't know if I agree. If I look at Hughes blatantly throwing the game vs Chelsea to give a rest to first teamers before a winnable game vs Newcastle, I wonder how many other teams at the bottom might do this too. Focus on the home games and six pointers, write off games vs teams they are not expected to win against.

Re the top 6, the title is over, only City fielding weakened sides will cause them to ship goals (although I admit they haven't been great in recent weeks with a full side). United are safely in the top 4 and I just can't see a Mourinho side conceding a lot or being cavalier. Despite the narrative being that Liverpool are poor defensively, they do not concede many and neither do Spurs.

The weaker teams might ship less goals but they will also take a few tankings caching games after falling behind.

I usually try and target three mid table teams that don't have a lot to play for. They might be better defensively than the weaker teams but without the fear of the drop they can start to believe their own hype and think they can actually win by out playing opposition. I seem to remember doing well targeting Pulis, Pardew, Bruce and Hughes teams in the past. Maybe Burnley could be this year's delusional targets?

            Best advice I've read today...

Although I feel if we could turn out our first team starting 11 we would be pretty tight under Moyes.

unfortunately so right now but a bit like Everton, when Moyes took over the Hammers didn't concede many vs the top sides (hence all of us bringing in Ogbonna and Adrian) but for some reason, even before recent injuries, that seems to have changed. I understood them conceding vs lesser teams because Moyes went more on the attack, presumably seeing them as winnable games. But remember the Chelsea win? They were great. The games vs Spurs, cup and league?

And yet they are currently the Premier League whipping boys on current form.

Hopefully they can turn it around. But on the evidence available they are struggling at the back and teams are taking advantage.

FYI you can post without being insulting and arrogant.

I am certainly not "an absolute idiot" - I'll put my education vs yours - and certainly possess a degree of footballing knowledge given I've been watching it for 30 years and played to a high level. When Allardyce took over they tightened up and people were rushing to bring in the likes of Kenny. They were not conceding with all of these "high profile" players out (and you're scraping the barrel with Baines at this stage in his career). Facts are, they have deteriorated under Allardyce after an initial bounce, the same players. Arsenal are not top drawer (I go to every home game) and they were terrible defensively. And that was not a one off. Spurs put 4 past them at a canter and United went to Everton and won 2-0 without needing to build up a sweat. Now Allardyce is resorting to blaming the players (as usual, not himself). To me it doesn't look like a good run at all and even like they are just writing off games against the big teams. Since this post from Jonty is inevitably about captaining our big name players vs them, it seems common sense.

      Jonty likes whipping boys?

Seriously I think it is tight all around besides Hudd. Any given day, even a weak team can have a strong defensive performance and similarly a strong attack can stutter. Given that some players will be rotated out/ looking to put in a strong performance to fight for their squad place, does that make it easier to choose good attack for potential whipping or less easier??

Midfield is fine, if everything else was ok you could look to move Lingard out but that bench needs attention.

I'd start planning for the blank in GW31.

      Ota out for Bauer
      DCL out for Wilson

Morning. New member and first post! 🙂

Got 2 FT this week but no idea what to do with them rather than being boring and sorting out non-playing defenders. Been caught out with Jones and Alonso this week. Any advice? Chasing about 90 point gap to mini league leader so need some differentials.

    Foster Elliot

    Alonso Jones Ogbonna Kenny Mbemba

    Sanchez Salah Sterling Son Choupo

    Kane Wilson Depoitre

0.6m ITB. Thinking maybe use just one transfer this week and save the other.

‘Everton are awful, Everton are terrible. I think the same thing after every scoutcast. Jonty may be a good FPL player but no football brain whatsoever in reality. They were tauted as challenges for top 4 at start of season, have had terrible managerial decisions and yet still sit in the top half of the league. There are at least 8 other teams I would consider ‘whipping boys’ before the Toffees would even be a consideration.

I was surprised to hear them grouped together with Huddersfield. Everyone was buying Kenny and Pickford in droves a few weeks ago.

yeah because we all believed in the Allardyce record Jasong... he has great form on that front. But something is amiss right now. And he's turning on the players. I had Kenny and he did great for me, I was on the verge of getting Pickford too but those same players - and it's disingenuous for anybody to start talking about players who have been out when Saturday's players were no different from when they were solid defensively - just don't look at the races. That was not a one off for Everton in recent weeks either and they have conceded vs weak sides too despite not facing that many shots. And why did Allardyce switch systems? It's like he's looking for an answer because he can see himself it isn't working defensively (and he basically said that the week before last when he spoke about wanting to be on MOTD last).

Agreed. They are wildly inconsistent. Horrible performance at Arsenal but 3 days before beat one of the form teams in the league quite comfortably. I'm pretty confident big sam will get at least 8 points from their next 5, relatively straightforward, fixtures

Furthemore, Pickford is a thousand times better prospect than Fabianski. Banging on about save points.. please, you won’t get bonus in a swans team getting demolished. Pickford’s form was far ahead of DDG over the past 8-10 GW’s before most brought him in

swans haven't been demolished that often aside from clement's final few games, you're off on this one, swans defence is a very reasonable option

Whipping boys? No but they've been playing awful football recently.

Its never good when as a fan of a team you are told that your team is awful. I'm a Brighton fan so am used to it but on current evidence Everton fans may have to get used to it too. 😉

Whether looking at recent performances or underlying stats the same conclusion is unavoidable - Everton are currently whipping boys.

Using my 'no football brain whatsoever' I can see that Everton have shipped 11 goals over the last four Gameweeks - that's an unwelcome league high honour they share with Huddersfield.

I can also see they've conceded 16 Big Chances over that period - the next worst is 10 (New, Swa). That's really poor.

I also engaged my eyes via my no football brain to watch them humbled by Arsenal at the weekend and also by Spurs this season - twice!

Obviously as a fan you hope they get better. As a Fantasy manager I hope so too, as on paper they have lots of bargain players to get in.

But sometimes being a football fan of a club can skew how you see a team as a fantasy football prospect.

The reality is that Everton are whipping boys and if you are weighing up the merits of a couple of captaincy candidates fantasy managers may be advised to put the armband on the one against the Toffees.

Will they continue to be whipping boys is another issue.

I'll jinx you here Zouma but I would hold (I have Son). I thought he was decent vs Liverpool and was almost through a couple of times.. I planned to get rid for the Man U & Liverpool games but changed my mind. Arsenal are not strong defensively (I'm a supporter) and Son has a good record at Wembley. Not sure if the Arsenal plan now is to try and win 4-3 but we will come a cropper vs Spurs if we try that. I like Walcott too and wanted him a couple of weeks back (before other problems in my team came up) but I think Arsenal is probably a decent game for Son.

      so many reasons.
      1) Laporte. City now have a lot of CB options, even if Ota has been the best choice. And if Guardiola is going to ease Laporte into the PL, surely he plays him in the "easy" games and plays Ota in the hard ones and CL?
      2) As per point 1, City have a LOT of games coming so surely rotation is likely.. I'm not sure City have such rotation options elsewhere in the team
      3) City are beginning to leak goals
      4) If you've owned him since the start, you've made a lot of money. I sold him at got 6.2. I can go to a Ben Mee and make funds available elsewhere. I'm never going to cash in the likes of Salah because although he's gone up a lot for me, I will always want him, even for the hard games. I'd have to give up cash to bring him back in whereas I know I won't need Ota again this season.
