Euro 2016 Team Analysis – Northern Ireland

Next up in our analysis of the Group C contenders is Northern Ireland. Michael O’Neill’s men start their tournament by squaring up to Poland on Sunday June 12 at 5pm before going up against Ukraine four days later at 5pm and group favourites Germany at 5pm on Tuesday, June 21.

Road to Qualification

O’Neill’s underdogs arrive in France as winners of Group F in qualifying, winning six and drawing three of their ten fixtures in a table that also hosted the likes of Romania, Hungary and Greece. Regardless, Northern Ireland struggled to impress in the final third – they scored just 16 times, with five of those arriving in a pair of clashes against the Faroe Islands.

It was a similar story at the back, with Ireland mustering just three clean sheets and conceding in six of their final seven fixtures.

The rank outsiders have played four friendlies over the past 12 months, winning three times and drawing once, with just a single goal conceded. This includes 1-0 victories over Latvia and Slovenia and a 1-1 stalemate with Wales prior to Sunday’s 3-0 triumph over Belarus.

In terms of tactics, O’Neill isn’t afraid to tinker with his formation in accordance with his team’s opponents and has employed 4-3-3, 4-4-2, 4-1-4-1 and 3-5-2 set-ups over the qualifiers and in recent friendlies.

Most Appearances Gareth McAuley, Oliver Norwood (10), Conor McLaughlin, Chris Baird, Steven Davis, Kyle Lafferty (9), Chris Brunt, Niall McGinn (8), Corry Evans, Josh Magennis (7)

Most goals Kyle Lafferty (7), Gareth McAuley (3), Steven Davis (2)

Most assists Oliver Norwood, Niall McGinn (3)

The Key Targets

Having played a part in eight of his nation’s 16 goals, courtesy of seven strikes and an assist, it’s fair to say that Kyle Lafferty is the likeliest source of Fantasy returns amongst the Northern Ireland squad. Priced at 7.0 in Uefa, the forward has shown next-to-no form on the domestic scene and was loaned out to Birmingham by Norwich last season, where his toils in the Championship make an unconvincing case for consideration. Set to be released by the Carrow Road club this summer, Lafferty is desperate to place himself firmly in the shop window over the tournament and was amongst the goals against Belarus at the weekend.

West Brom’s Gareth McAuley offers a potential source of points at both ends of the pitch. Available for 5.0 in the Uefa game, he netted three times in the qualifiers to mirror the aerial menace in and around the opposition box that harvested four goals for the Baggies in 2015/16. McAuley presence at set-pieces could be a key attacking ploy for O’Neill’s men.

Steven Davis finished the previous season in style by netting three times over Southampton’s wins against Spurs and Palace. Available for 6.0 in the Uefa game, he scored twice over the qualifiers and registered double-figure hauls for both attempts on goal and chances created. The skipper’s defensive work could also appeal in the Draft Kings game.

Oliver Norwood (5.5 in Uefa) may be one to consider. He’s O’Neill’s first-choice for dead-ball duties, which could be key given that Ireland scored more goals from set-pieces than any side in the qualifiers. Norwood produced more than double the number of key passes than any team-mate and was also number one for crosses. His combative nature in the centre of the park could also be useful for successful tackles and interceptions in Draft Kings.

The Long Shots

Setting you back just 4.5 in Uefa and listed as a defender, Chris Baird offers O’Neill an option at the back or in a defensive central midfield role. The former West Brom man started eight of the ten qualifiers and looks more reliable for minutes than the similarly-priced Craig Cathcart and Paddy McNair, who also started against Belarus at the weekend. Should he be handed a role in the centre of the park, Baird is another to consider for defensive actions in the Draft Kings game.

The situation in goal is somewhat uncertain as both Roy Carroll and Michael McGovern started five qualifiers apiece and have been named in the XI in two of the last four friendlies. The duo are priced at 4.5 in Uefa and if one can emerge as O’Neill’s first-choice stopper, could prove decent value – it’s worth keeping an eye on their line up against Slovakia on June 4 for any clarification.

Strikers Conor Washington and Will Grigg are priced at 5.0 and bagged a goal apiece at the weekend. Although the former is the most popular forward under 6.0 in Uefa, with 3% ownership, he has been afforded a single sub appearance of late – against Belarus on Sunday. Washington, on the other hand, has been named in the XI in each of the last three friendlies and seems a more secure pick for those tight on funds.

Niall McGinn earned more appearances that any wide player over the qualifiers and chipped in with a trio of assists. His appeal is virtually non-existent in the Uefa game due to his classification as a forward but if he’s listed as a midfielder in Draft Kings, could be a viable budget enabler.

I'm not really up to date on things, but is there a doubt over Hummels?

Bonaventura not selected by Italy right? and do you mean schar (swiss defender?)
I would rather downgrade Bale to Kane or Mandzukic, and upgrade sanches and 5th midfielder to some 7m midfield. Otherwise the rest is GTG

I am playing a different strategy, I am going for either a 4-3-3 for a 5-2-3..so I am really not interested in expensive 4th and 5th Mid.

I will look at the squads and see who are selected thanks for the Bonaventura heads up!

        Yeah the Swiss defender..Thanks!

Fosberg(?), 5.5m midfielder for Sweden, could be a decent cheap 4th mid punt

Depends how you rate Germany's chances of turning their recent defence around, which is a definite possibility.

              Stick with your gut 🙂

ya its a feasible strategy too (for me i plan to have five balanced mid for rotation)
you can then change Hummel to Hector (5.5m) to save 1m and invest it somewhere else 🙂

    Patricio Hennesey
    Hector Kosc Juanfran Dier Dragovic
    Ozil Alaba Perisic Alli R.Silva
    Muller Griezmann Kane

    Budget left: 0m

I don't like the English and French defense, I don't think they will be able to keep CS.

Given Reus is out Ozil becomes an attractive option, but have a look at Kroos as well.

Are you sure Alli will start all the matches?

I think Sanches is a safer pick than R.Silva

      Giroud over Griezmann for me.

If we assume that having both Muller and Lewandowski is a waste of a captaincy choice. Which one would you have and why? I'm not planning a group stage WC so need them both to play all 3. Presumably, Muller is more of a rotation risk if Germany win the first two?

Is there any merit in having both of them?

Poland's performance depends on Lewandowski's performance, Germany can still perform without Muller but that being said, Whenever Muller play and Germany Scores he seems to be involved in it....So if you think Poland will score more goals in Group Stage than Germany pick Lewandowski else Muller

Yesterday Sky Sports News HQ brought said that Jose Mourinho is open to letting Daley Blind and Juan Mata depart Man United this summer, and today Spanish newspaper Sport reports Barcelona are considering a £14m offer for Blind.

Luis Enrique wants reinforcements in defence, with Dani Alves reportedly set to join Juventus and uncertainty clouding the future of Thomas Vermaelen and Javier Mascherano.

I also read this from a different source. Apparently Mascherano might go to Juve with Dani Alves.

I reckon Blind would be an amazing signing for Barca. He'd fit really well into their system. It really would be Man Utd's loss but too bad.

Blind wont survive in Mourinho's system. All non-possession dominant PL teams NEED to have 5-6 players who are tall and dominant at set pieces imo.

Mourinho has always said his team must have minimum 5 tall players in order to handle set pieces.

Blind is an interesting one. He could cover Shaw at LB and also cover CM. A useful squad player. But sure as hell he won't play CB for Mourinho.

Exactly. I think Blind should be sold at the back of a good season where his value will be high. Also , Barcelona will be a good fit for Blind imo. But then again United have lots of money and why should they help Barca?

Can't necessarily see him being a starting XI player for Mou but he's a talented guy who can play a lot of positions, very useful for any team.

Still, I have my doubts that Mou will just kick him out without as much as a chance to prove himself.

          matuidi is a nailed-on midfielder at 7.0 bracket, 42 caps with 11 goals+assists
comparing to pogba (29 caps, 8 goals+assists, 42% ownership) and payet (16 caps, 5 goals+assists, 22%ownership) he will be a good and cheaper differential (7.0 and only 6%!)

          See this on Mak -

          SLOVAKIA:
          Hamsik (7.5) - Minutes per Goal or Assist for Slovakia = 234 (17 goals , 10 assists)
          Weiss (6.5) - Minutes per Goal or Assist for Slovakia = 199 (4 goals , 13 assists)
          Mak (6.0) - Minutes per Goal or Assist for Slovakia = 168 (7 goals , 1 assist)

Mak by far the best IMO.

I'm enjoying the stats you're pulling together regarding goal/assist rates but I'd like it more if the two were separated to give mins/goal and mins/assist - at 5 and 3 points (for midfielders) there's a significant difference 🙂

(Not relevant to this post particularly - Muller is going nowhere from my team!)

                (excluding friendlies) = 112 (!)

Minites per fantasy point for Austria = 42

You could have a point there alright.. But at least in qualifying they are more likely to play their "default" formation and starting 11, whereas friendlies might be used to experiment and tinker.. I could be very wrong 🙂

I just checked. Alaba at the start of his Austrian career played on the wings and got many goals and assists. This coincided with the Qualifiers. He has played all but one friendly as CM. That skews the figures.

Need a little help guys. I need to run a blog for sometime for a course I'm doing so I thought what better than a football related blog.

I'm just a little confused about what topic to pick exactly. Been thinking about doing a blog on different tactics and how they are employed by different managers as I love to read and talk about tactics. Or maybe just a general blog about my views on all things football. Or maybe something on the Euros. All ideas are welcome 🙂

    Thoughts on this? -

    Rui Patricio - Sommer

    Koscielny - Juanfran - Dragovic - Denayer - Hysaj

    Kroos - Alaba - Grosicki - Alli - Mak

    Ronaldo - Muller - Kane

Prefer Lindelof to Hysaj, allows you 0.5 to upgrade one of the 7m players.

          I'd do something like:

          Sommer + Koscielny + Hysaj ---> Kozacik + Schar + Bonucci

I'm only interested in France's attack with 5 of their first 6 CB's out injured. You could squeeze Matuidi in for a 7.0 mid if you felt naked without the French 🙂 Kane -> Giroud is another option

I haven't read the rules properly but don't the prices get changed to reflect performance at some point?

If thats the case does anyone know if the players you have also get changed and then u have to compensate or do we think if you already have them then you keep them at that price.

    I guess the former

    Fantasy FrogBall Rules

All 96 members (24 teams of 4) have now joined the mini league ready for the Fantasy FrogBall tournament. You don't have to do anything else from here! These are the rules, to hopefully settle any future disputes.

    Points Scoring
Your total score is made up of your 4 members fantasy team GW scores combined and you will go head to head with a different nation every week, in the same set up as the Euro 2016 tournament. Like the actual tournament, a win will earn your team 3 points, a draw 1 and a loss 0, however a score of 300 or more will earn you a bonus point, whether you have lost or won your tie (this threshold may be raised/lowered if it is found to be too easy/difficult after the first GW).

    Group Placing’s
In the group, point’s ties are decided by overall Points Difference, which is decided like goal difference. The 4 highest place 3rd place teams will go through to the last 16 in a format that will be the same as the actual tournament.

    Ties
Ties will be decided by whichever team has the highest single points scorer of the eight members across two teams – if these are tied it goes to the second highest scorer, and so on.

    Spreadsheet
Attached below is the spread sheet for the whole competition. This will show team scores, match results, group standings and individual scores for each week of the tournament, and I will also be writing an article or hot topic for each GW.

    https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1C9qMgX-4aEycI2Qg6WzCiVL8G4YQtIs1L3RCHqShDB8/edit?usp=sharing

    Good luck!

    JUNUZOVIC (6.5)

Goals + Assists per 90 minutes for Austria = 0.56
    Excluding Friendlies = 0.71
Fantasy points per 90 minutes for Austria = 2.09
    Excluding Friendlies = 2.72

    SLOVAKIA

    HAMSIK (7.5)

Well Alaba's 3 NON Friendly goals have been penalties.

        So his G+A/90 excluding friendlies = 0.67

I do not know about his assists tho. 🙁

Don't think Belgium is really necessary 😀

Lukaku will be our main striker but prob won't play 90 minutes in any game and there are better options out there for his price tag. Our right winger will be Mertens/Carrasco/Origi so too much rotation there. Hazard is priced at 9.5 but quite a frustration to watch him play for Belgium. KDB at 10.0 is the best option out there for our middfield. Vertonghen Alderweireld will be 100% nailed on in defence, while Denayer and Vermaelen are most likely to play most of the games (at a lower price).

You will be surprised to hear that Fellaini has the best stats from Belgium w.r.t to his low price...

It actually doesn't surprise me at all, he is also the topscorer in this group of player I think, or at least he was a while ago. But he is far from nailed.

And that's the main problem. The other one is that he won't so easily bully the defences of Sweden, Italy and Ireland, known to be quite good in air. If Belgium wants to score, they have to keep the ball in the ground and use pace and technique, so rather Hazard than Fellaini. Unfortunately, Wilmots is the type of manager more prone to successfully manage a Fellaini than a Hazard.

I am not sure about Lukaku at all in Wilmots system..
Benteke and Origi seem far suited to it and if not for Benteke's disastrous season with us, Lukaku might not have even started

Indeed, I think Lukaku is the better player but not in this system. However, I'm more of a Batshuayi fan for the role as lone striker. But hard to bench a quality player like Lukaku though

Wilmots doesn't seem to understand that in a NT, where you can't just go on buying and selling players but have formally limited resources, you have to look at what kind of talent you have in your hands and adjust your strategies to that, and not impose any tactics on the team and just then use the players best suiting to that.

Well join the club, I think everyone here really want Wilmots to be fired, doesn't bring anything extra to the team, boring style of play.... But those in the Belgian Football Association or whatever it's called in English won't fire him any time soon I think. But it's not like they have any idea of what's going on. There are also some expensive fines here in Belgium if someone uses a picture of the Red Devils (what our squad is called) or use their name to promote an event (like for example, if a bar wants to show the game and he wants to promote this)

You don't need Ozil since you have Muller, IMO

Ozil -> Kroos/Alaba/Perisic and upgrade the defence

Note - Sane and Draxler have hardly played , so I have omitted them from this analysis.

Okay but I have to exclude Payet , Martial and Coman for the analysis. Only Pogba and Matuidi have played sufficient minutes....

Right. So let's do the caveats.

      1. This is reminiscent of the Walcott 'points per minute' stuff posted on here before the FPL season. Which I strenuously objected to at the time, by the way. Because Walcott's gametime was very insecure indeed and therefore the 'points per minute' (or 'points per 90' as here) was very misleading.

      2. Schürrle has averaged around 45 minutes per game for Germany over the last 3 years. He could play 90, he could play 70, he could play 25, he could play 10. You will never know till the game is played. But it is seldom that he doesn't figure as either a starter or a sub when fit.

      3. So really you should cut his points per 90 by at least 50% to take this into account for comparison purposes. Though I have no doubt that EH's figures are factually correct.

      🙂

So, say you divide his stats per 90 by 2 in order to get a more accurate estimate of how many points he can score in a given GW. you get (Excluding Friendlies = 6.11 / 2 = 3.05) which is still vastly superior to Kroos (1.73) for £0.5 more and at a much higher risk. However, does this game's format of manual subs allow us to take a high-risk / high-reward punt like himself? With, say, Alaba coming in if he fails?

I think it does, in the Group Stage at least. That's why Schürrle is in my team. I have 14 starters apart from him and can afford to take the risk of a 5-minute cameo as he plays in an early enough group.

I know the caveats. I am just posting productivity stats. With Schurrle it is always been a big problem. When he starts , he rarely scorers but plays well. When he comes on as a sub , he plays bad but scores a goal ! 😀

Sure, no criticism of your post. Just adding some necessary comments (in my view) to make sure people don't get misled.

Schürrle is in my team but I don't want either of us to get blamed for him being in anyone else's. 🙂

Matuidi owners; there's talk of him playing as a holding midfielder given Diarra has been ruled out of the tournament with injury! Just a heads up

Yup, Schneiderin called in his place.

France is extremely unlucky, missing a full team of players already for injuries or other (stupid) reasons.

Matuidi will not play the DM position, that is for sure. Either Kanté, Schneiderlin, or Cabaye. The thing is that Deschamps wants a deep playmaker type of technical player as the holding midfielder, somebody who calms the game down, holds the ball, passes accurately, which is why neither Kanté nor Matuidi tends to play that role. They can fully do the defensive job, which is required, but they're too eager to run around the pitch instead of controlling the game. Which is also why Diarra was so important and why he will be missed so much. And why I also think it was a mistake not to call up Rabiot. He would have been exactly the type of player to put to that position, and in addition offers a goal threat. Well, Schneiderlin will be fine too.

If Diarra is replaced in the lineup by Kanté, expect a change of formation to 4-2-3-1, but I doubt that happening. It just has not worked for France, Deschamps is keen to that 4-3-3. I expect him rather to bring up Diarra's natural replacement, the guy who held that position before Diarra's revival: Cabaye.
