The Stock Check – Gameweek 1 – Monday

Chelsea’s stars of 2014/15 rise to the occasion at Stamford Bridge as both Diego Costa and Eden Hazard deliver goals to earn Antonio Conte a victory in his first Premier League outing. Here’s the final Stock Check of Gameweek 1.

On the Rise

Eden Hazard
The Belgian’s spot-kick was hugely significant, not least because it saw Hazard deliver in Gameweek 1, but also because it appears to confirm him as Chelsea’s designated penalty taker. That’s something of a puzzle given that Oscar took one in pre-season with Hazard on the pitch. Now with penalties secured, Hazard’s stock, like that of Riyad Mahrez, has enjoyed a major boost.

Diego Costa
Owned by just 7% of FPL managers, Costa’s fine winning strike rolled us back to the 2014/15 campaign and offered a reminder of his clinical finishing ability. His future at Chelsea is far from assured but if he can hint at returning to his debut season strike rate, he may yet enter our thinking. However, an early booking and a reckless challenge on Adrian also demonstrated just why we have to show extreme caution.

Cesar Azpilicueta
The Spanish full-back has significantly improved his attacking game and is now offering just as much from the left as Branislav Ivanovic on the right. Unlike the Serb, Azpilicueta’s starting role has rarely come under question and with no rival for his position, he continues to stand out as the key option in Antonio Conte’s defence. Tonight’s assist and bonus only underlined that further.

James Collins
Slaven Bilic opted for the Welsh warhorse over Angelo Ogbonna, potentially unlocking a 4.5 option in West Ham’s backline. That already brought Collins to our attention, even before his dramatic blast from a West Ham corner. A start against AFC Bournemouth should be guaranteed but it remains if he can hold off Ogbonna in the long-term.

In Decline

Andre Ayew
The Ghanaian’s West Ham bow lasted just 34 minutes before he gave way with a thigh problem. That was a blow to his 9.5% ownership who must now wait anxiously to see if he can recover for Sunday’s potentially profitable meeting with the Bournemouth defence. With Payet a likely starter, Bilic won’t need to take a risk with his new signing.

Michail Antonio
Charged with containing Hazard, he was always in for a testing evening. Seemingly consigned to a right-back role with Bilic collecting options on the flanks, Antonio was hooked shortly after conceding the early second-half penalty. His start against AFC Bournemouth could be in doubt – his fragility against top class opponents certainly isn’t, nor is his reluctance to continue as a full-back.

Sofiane Feghouli
The 5.5 midfield option is another in the West Ham treatment room. He missed tonight’s encounter with a hamstring problem which materialised in training according to Bilic.

Oscar
We thought he was on spot-kicks, clearly he is not. That’s a major dent to his appeal and with Cesc Fabregas breathing down his neck, the Brazilian’s owners will rarely be able to rest easy.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Any news regarding Gradel? I really thought he was nailed on 🙁 Thinking Gradel->Bolasie?

Wasn't injured so don't think we'll get news.

He probably will become a starter, but whether that's now or later who knows

I can't see him being kept out... but not prepared to risk it as I need that player in my team to be nailed on.

people saying things ranging from good to fantastic. generally positive.

I watched this one and I only counted one half chance, the curling shot that just missed wide. outside of that, the pen saved all Hazard owners here.

unless I missed some other big moments

But it's not just scoring that gets you points in this game. He was creative and players around him played well too. Can see him getting plenty of assists (and bonus points).

We don't know if he'll be better value than Oscar / Willian / Costa yet though. He's the most expensive, and the fact is he was saved by a penalty, no matter how sharp he looked.

No it wouldn't. But the performance was still good overall and akin to 2014/15 rather than last season.

Has to be on the watchlist at his price, especially if he's going to keep that role and pop up with jammy goals (which I had no problem with obviously).

In truth he could have easily had another goal with Ibra creating at least 2 good chances for him, but whilst his positioning was good his finishing wasn't.

Still not convinced he's a number 10 as his first touch is poor and decision making slow, but he was playing much more central and higher up the pitch for once so the potential for goals is there. Especially with Ibra feeding him.

I have Ibra so won't touch him yet, but if their partnership flourishes it could be another SAS scenario potentially.

    What's the latest on Giroud?
Sanchez was invisible vs a Pool which let 3 goals slip in...
Hazard was way too lively, even though pens aren't nailed fully down.

    Feels mad, but is it?
    Sanchez + Vardy ➡ Hazard + Ibra?
    Or just save?

Wenger said they may still not be ready for the weekend.

Sanchez is a better option wide imo. And I'd like to own him from gw3/4 but I think Ozil is too good value comparatively.

    Foster
    Valencia, PvA, Amat
    Alexis, Hazard, Firmino, Tadic
    Zlatan, Carroll, Negredo

Jaku, Capoue, Fuchs, Stones - .5 itb.

Plan was to do Fuchs to Williams this week (and Negredo to Tekkers next week if he signs for Palace).
But I think I will hold this week and hope that Williams don't play so he can drop .1 as defence is good enough this week.

I've got a feeling I'm going to need some major changes soon, should Hazard and Ibra continue to perform:

    Aguero | Vardy | Gray

Vardy v Arsenal will be lively given he snubbed them, and talked about it being an easy decision.

Will get booed with every touch and the gooners will love him to blank. Red rag to a rampaging Vardy bull. Or will he try to hard and fluff his lines again?

Had my best ever GW1, scoring 85. Pretty chuffed, but looking to consolidate this now into a good season, so any constructive advice would be appreciated.

Only 2 points of contention in the squad are Smith (Defence) & Gray (Forward).

I thought Gray played well, despite not scoring. I'm keen to give him a bit longer, but also a short transfer to Negrado for at least 2GW's looks appealing. The flip side of this is that Liverpool didn't look great at the back, so I'm not sure.

Now, Smith is a 4.0 defender, if I got a replacement he probably wouldn't be a starter anyway. But it does Irk me that I could possibly have Amat.

I'll probably just save a FT this week, but was wondering if anyone had any advice.

You should be giving us advice with that score! 😉

      Well done!

Keep them both. Gray deserves another chance as you didn't get him for one gw right?

A non starter isn't ideal, but as long as you have adequate cover and his price won't fall quickly, then I don't see the benefit of potentially wasting a transfer on Amat when we still don't know if he's 100% nailed. Be patient as we might see some other 4mil defenders emerge as regulars in a few gws such as Love, McNair and Wilson.

Everton's fixtures are hard to ignore, and with Delboy, Mirallas, Bolasie and Barkley supporting him I can see some chances coming his way.

Rumor is he's not as unhappy as the press are reporting and will sign a new deal to stay at EVE very soon.

This bodes well as a happy Lukaku is a scoring Lukaku.

    De Gea/Jakupovic
    Valencia/Sagna/Friend (Amat, Fry)
    Bojan/Mkhitaryan/Eriksen/Silva/Hazard
    Aguero/Long (Grabban)

    I have a few ideas after gw1
    Silva for Coutinho
    Sagna for Stones
    Long for Negredo
    Long for Andy Carroll
    thanks

Are you serious? This was by miles the worst Mahrez performance I have ever seen, not looking dangerous at all, clearly those transfer rumours are affecting him in some way. Good thing for owners that he is on pens though, did not expect that as a Vardy owner 😀

ICT index 11.8 - 7th amongst all mids over the GW. He's done better, but that's not poor.

Didn't think they looked strong attacking wise at all. They started creating chances when Bournemouth had to go on the attack because they were behind.

Only savour was that he was on pens. Not sure who won the foul as im sure if Vardy was fouled he would of taken the pen? United against southampton this friday night will sure be a buzz around Old Trafford - Pogba back, also Martial assisting two goals against BOU?

On the other hand a hometime against a weak looking defensive Arsenal team?

It was Gray who won this penalty, which actually was no penalty at all. Martial against a Southampton defence which has been pretty solid over the last years. He wasn't very good either with 2 cheap assist, 1 for the solo goal from Ibra and another one for Rooney which was actually a shot on goal for him.

Both weren't great and were lucky to get their points. Martial was probably just slightly more lively in looking to take players on.

At this stage it's a sideways move and not necessary. Give it another gw and see how they perform.

I don't think it's up and running yet, just pick the team manually.

Why are so many people advising to save a transfer? I always make lots early, because the early gameweeks are when line ups are settling and form is emerging.

Don't nane changes if you don't hsve to. Give players 3 games to settle, then ship if necessary. Use wc at the int break.

Nothing wrong with making transfers if they make sense.

Many have been advised to hold because so far we've seen a lot of transfers and reasoning that doesn't make sense and won't make their teams any better.

Good player, better than Moreno anyway, he wasn't as good as Marcelo though. Nothing amazing but solid, he was never worth what Madrid payed for him.

Very unlucky not to win a Euro medal due to injury.

Not too happy about my 46 points, but there was a couple of punts in there i guess.

My plan was to have Vardy for the Hull game and then go from there. Oscar not on penalties seems a bigger problem though. I got Sanchez for max flexibility in midfield and to be able to go for whoever of the premium mids started firing. With Sanchez not looking to involved and Hazard looking lively, that is also an option.

With the below front 8 and 1 ITB, do I

    Sanchez, Oscar, Tadic, Feghouli, Capoue
    Kun, Vardy, Gray

    A) save my ft
    B) Oscar to Firm/Cout
    C) Sanchez to Hazard
    D) other suggestions
