Skipper Leighton Baines grabs the winner as Everton labour to victory in the first leg of their Europa League third round qualifying tie.

Here are the notes from a testing night for the Toffees.

Everton 1 MFK Ruzomberok 0

Leighton Baines’ deflected strike gave Everton something to defend ahead of what is likely to be a tricky trip to Slovakia for the second leg of their Europa League qualifying tie.

While Ronald Koeman’s men were still getting to grips with pre-season, their opponents had already played one league match and beaten Norwegians SK Brann over two legs to earn their visit to Goodison.

So there was always a feeling that this could be a step too soon for the Toffees.

And so it proved.

Everton were slightly off the pace for much of the encounter, and it took the second-half introduction of new signing Sandro to bring some directness and intent into their attacking play.

Koeman handed competitive debuts to defenders Michael Keane and Cuco Martina, though Jordan Pickford – with just 45 minutes in pre-season behind him – lost out to Maarten Stekelenburg in goal.

Davy Klaasen was part of the midfield three in a 4-3-2-1 formation.

The returning Wayne Rooney played through the middle up front, supported from the flanks by Kevin Mirallas, who was handed set-piece duties, and Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Keane was assured throughout, Martina considerably less so, while Klaasen showed the odd flash of creative ability but might need to demonstrate a lot more – and quickly – should Everton finally land long-time transfer target Gylfi Sigurdsson.

Ruzoberok were resolute in defence and quick to counter, forcing a couple of smart saves from Stekelenburg before Sandro, who replaced Calvert-Lewin, changed the tie’s dynamic.

Rooney was pushed out to the right to accommodate the Spaniard, whose willingness to run behind the back four finally stretched the Slovakians’ defence, allowing the hosts to apply some sustained pressure from which Baines’ winner eventually came.

Post-match, Koeman was quick to praise the impact of Sandro.

“Sandro brought pace to the team, he showed good movement and that gave Wayne more freedom to play from the right side.”

But the manager also told ITV Sport that he is keen to bring in another striker – not what the 20.9% of FPL manager who own Rooney wanted to hear.

Then again, Everton’s opening schedule is sufficiently harsh – involving four of last season’s top six by the middle of September – that early investment in any of their assets looks decidedly risky.

A clean sheet could boost the stock of the 13.0%-owned Keane, while the goal from the ever-reliable Baines (10.3%) was another reminder of his Fantasy pedigree.

But major backing of Everton players looks to be a strategy for the longer term, or at least a good deal later than this very early competitive start to the season.

Everton: Stekelenburg; Martina, Keane, Williams, Baines; Gueye, Schneiderlin, Klaassen (Davies 86); Mirallas (Lookman 82), Calvert-Lewin (Sandro 61); Rooney.
Subs not used: Pickford, Jagielka, Holgate, Barry.

    Morning folks.

So Everton did little to impress us last night and we might even expect Rooney's 20.7% ownership to take a knock now.

That might be knee jerk, but last night's tie issued a reminder that, not only do Everton have a testing schedule in the Premier League, the Europa League will also be a major distraction.

Koeman's side have a second leg to come and then, if they progress, have a two leg playoff around Gameweeks 2 and 3 before the group stages start in September.

Across Merseyside, Liverpool have a Champions League playoff - also around Gameweeks 2 and 3.

So are you factoring this into your thinking?

If you've abandoned Everton due to fixtures, are you also wary of Liverpool given the importance of their approaching Champions League playoff?

Are we anticipating early rotation and if so, where?

Not touching Everton players due to fixtures, that is a seriously tough start they have - I may consider Martina for the stoke game but he will be transferred in GW2 for sure.

Coutinho is a Liverpool stud (like Suarez was). If he is sold then Liverpool's performance will drop big time and their assets will be less worthwhile from a FPL perspective. Can they resist an £80m offer though? I am sure the accountants are rubbing their hands in glee.

100% think will be resisted, if Walker is fifty million than no chance he's getting sold for 80, 133m is alleged quoted price but think even that is rubbish

Fairly certain he won't be sold this summer, could be wrong - but don't need the money, unless he starts going on strike or a huge bid comes in hell be there next season

Considering Swansea want fifty for siggy no chance coutinho going for eighty, all the reputable papers n pool journos saying no chance regardless of bid

Supposedly he's quite bemused W all the Spanish press quotes RE agreement in place

80 for Coutinho, similar to 'stellar' transfers of Pogba and Lukaku, seems doable. Especially, when it's Barca calling.

Siggy for 50, on the other hand, sounds a bit of a wishful thinking...

Everton looked like a side that was struggling to replace 20 PL goals a season. This is why you don't sell your studs. It is also why Arsenal should pretty much pay whatever Sanchez demands to keep him. Not easy to replace a Luis Suarez, Luka Modric or Gareth Bale - ask Liverpool and Spurs

I'm steering away for now, although I think LIV points will be missed early on. Hoping that my other players also produce so there's not that much damage. But rotation that early on I don't think it will be that big of a problem as they'll try to start as best as they can in the PL also.

Time will tell, Klopp might prove me wrong.

Yes, i've highlighted a couple of thoughst below -

      - Go very very light on 'Pool / Everton players
      - Focus on teams with no European football
      - Look at the squad which has travelled for away European fixtures
      - Arsenal wont play any of their big guns in the EL until later in the comp
      - Spurs have a small squad and a lot of fixtures

Have no Everton or Liverpool players in my current draft. Everton due to fixtures, Liverpool as my squad structure is poor and I don't have room at the right price point.

No Liverpool or Everton for me at least until 1st wildcard.

Wait and see what happens with Coutinho, who looks like best mid and if Firmino looks like value for Liverpool.

Wait and see if Klaasen is worthwhile for Everton and if Martina can nail the RB slot.

Loads of more nailed on options in the 9m and 7m brackets for midfielders with better early fixtures too.

Yeah, you have to wonder how long Rooney will take the lone striker role and then, when Koeman's shifts him, how secure his minutes will be. Seems unthinkable now but, if Everton show a lack of pace, Rooney will end up dropping deeper and deeper.

and he was better when he dropped deeper and towards right.
if koeman had been cuter,(and I don't think he is.),after 15 mins he would have put dom calvert up top(as he plays internationally)klassen behind him and moved rooney to the right side
instead dom had no joy stuck on wing and rooney is no longer a centre forward

TBF to Koeman this was a game where he was bringing Rooney back in from the cold. It was risky.

I can't see Rooney playing in that role in the Prem - or any competitive match. Looked more like some kind of testimonial position.

I can't see Koeman playing him that deep.

          Playing off Sandro/striker with Klaassen/Mirallas/Siggy

          He's not a target man.

Sandro is only 1.8% owned. He is a big gamble compared to someone like Chicharito who is the same price and arguably nailed to play but as a 3rd striker he could pay off if someone wants to take a punt. I reckon he will outscore Rooney.

I got Martina/Holgate and Sandro for GW1. Then my plan is to tranfer Sandro to Chicarito for GW2. Martina/Holgate may then play in GW6 next time.

This is wildly ambitious / optimistic. Classic GW1 mistake in my opinion. Stoke at home is a dreadful opening fixture for a player who may not even start. He could get 20 minutes, perhaps trying to overturn a stalemate... not ideal.

Had a good run in pre-season but a lot of pundits don't see him as being suited to play as the lone forward in Pellegrino's system. I'd see what happens in their last few friendlies to get an idea of the pecking order for their forwards.

I'm sitting with Baines for GW1. Planning to get rid before GW2. His price tag enables a swap for any 6.0 def or any cheaper defender such as Lindelöf, who I would like to assess if he gets the nod to start or not, which would free up funds towards a future transfer.

I see Baines as a cheeky differential with a strong opening fixture, may well be worth it as most avoid Everton early on.

Another punt may be Wijnaldum. He should see playtime as they likely will rotate a bit in order to handle their qualifier. At 7.0 he is a bargain if he gets pitch time.

It's easy to abaondon Everton and with so many questions, especially if one wants to join Lukaku and Kane, over budget, last night is an easy decision maker for me: no Everton players as I feel all are overpriced in view of your concerns.

However, in trying to decixde whether to go for Alli7Eriksen or Coutinho (aside to KDB), I may be inclined to drop my beloved Coutinho given that rotation risk. It will be a tough call as Coutinho must be less prone to rotation than the others.

Defence to eye up for me is certainly City.

They knew they're weak points - and have strengthened there. I don't think they'll be as weak as last year back there.

Spurs at Wembley could be a worry - that said I have Trippier and Lindy (like most)

      Don't like the prices.

      Lindelöf - Not nailed
      Bailly - No offensive threat
Valencia - Rather pay 0.5 more for Alonso
      And no nailed LB.

Yeah, I'm starting to question my Aguero and Sane double up.

Not sure whether to try and get KDB in for Sane, or stick to just Aguero and swap Sane to Eriksen (already have Ali) or Coutinho.

Ten years ago, when kids of my age called Superman and Spiderman their superheroes, I treated this man as my Superhero. When people asked me whether my favorite player was Ronaldo or Messi, I used to proudly tell them- "Wayne Rooney" when no one dared saying that. And there were times when I had nightmares of this man leaving the club and leaving me tattered.

Today though, that has come true. It will be strange to have Manchester United without the man who has been a fantastic servant to the club.

I remember watching him as that teenager who brought a smile to the kid's face every week and his passion, drive and determination to never give up inspired me and will keep on inspiring me throughout my life. His never satiating hunger to give his all for the team used to be so satisfying that he was very often the best player on the pitch, despite being the smallest out there.

Even today, if you happen to ask me about who my favorite player is, I can't pick out a single player apart from Wazza himself. Others may ooze flair and panache, but they never had the desire to cover blade of grass on the pitch to put the team's priorities before his own. So much so that even when he scored the record-breaking 251st goal, he didn't celebrate at all.
Because the game at Stoke wasn't won. If that's not called commitment for the club, I can't imagine what is!

People hated him for everything that he is, but there's no one better in silencing critics by coming up with a scintillating performance on the pitch. When people abused him off the pitch, he shut them up and left them gagged by performing on the pitch. When others came and left, he stood firm.

After years of putting the club before his own priorities, it's time he finally puts his own ones before anything else. He still has two or three decent years left and while I won't sleep well because this terrific journey's coming to an end, it's time he departs and starts proving people wrong again- something Wayne Rooney's always been about and always will be.

He'll be hated and will be laughed at by many, but the man's been through it all. He does his talking on the pitch. And fifty years on , when people will ask me about who my favorite player was, I will smile and proudly take this battler's name. The battler who brought a smile that kid's face.

Can't really thank this man enough and I really do fall short of words to describe him and what he's achieved. I'll miss chanting your name every time you took to the pitch, but will continue to defend you when no one does.

Thanks for making me fall in love with the game, Wayne Rooney. There will never be another you ever again.

    My Superman. Forever.

What are people's thoughts on "throwaway" players i.e. ones who are the cheapest price point and you know will rarely ever play but can be safely tucked away as 3rd sub.

Seriously tempted to pick a 4.5 forward just to free up funds for 2 big hitters up front rather than two 8m level players.

I briefly toyed with it, but the extra 2.0 or 2.5 didn't stretch to a proper midfield upgrade.

I'd rather have a playing 4.5 defender or one of the 4.5 mids that should be playing as the guys sitting on my bench.
The same logic aplies to non playing 4.0 defenders... I've been stuck with 3.9's on my bench for ages before... and there is very little you can do until you are forced to act because its hit 3.8 already.

But ok, I did see some mention of Rolando Aarons at 4.5. He has been impressive in the PL before, just a question of playing time.

I believe this is true. It's still reasonably unfamiliar surroundings for Spurs players but the few matches they had there last year will still help. it will clearly not be as big an advantage as WHL (at least, for the first few matches) but it will still give them some form of home advantage.

      Penalties is an interesting one.

Mooy took a couple last season but had his second one saved.

Their only open play penalty after that was scored by Chris Lowe whilst Mooy was on the pitch so he might have pinched them. Worth noting that Lowe also won that penalty so who knows if that played a part.

Lowe and Mooy both scored in the 2 penalty shootouts that Huddersfield had in the playoffs. Lowe took 1st penalty and Mooy 4th in both cases.

      I'm undecided personally.

I don't think Trippier is a good choice for the first 2 weeks.
Spurs will against Newcastle (away) and Chelsea (home), it will be hard for them to have clean sheet.

I would like go with Otamendi/Stones (as they scored against madrid), then I change him to Trippier at the gameweek 3.

    Bad or good idea?
