FPL half-term report: the 20 Premier League teams ranked by KPI data

This latest members’ article looks at the performances of the top-flight clubs this season from an underlying statistics point of view.

The aim is to pinpoint which areas all of the Premier League teams are strong in, as well as highlighting any weaknesses that the key performance indicators might betray.

Each statistic is ranked in relation to the other Premier League sides, with 1st being the best and 20th the worst. For example, Manchester City are marked as 1st for expected goals conceded (xGC) as this is the lowest figure in the whole of the division.

We have also calculated the 20 clubs’ average FPL fixture difficulties (where 2.00 is the easiest fixture and 5.00 is the toughest, according to the ratings given in the game itself) from Gameweeks 1-8 in order to give some context – and mitigation where needed – as to the rankings.

    So Egyptian manager Javier Aguirre has confirmed Salah will start against Swaziland on Friday and said that there are no issues with the player with regard to fatigue. A further trip to Swaziland follows on Tuesday and return to Liverpool thereafter. Surely that amount of travelling will take its toll on Mo who plays Saturday away to a well rested Huddersfield team!

                Dunno, Wally used to be an FPL God. Cheap and when he got a run of games would have a huge PPG. But that was at Arsenal...

                Don't worry about people calling players trolls. It's meaningless- Kane blanked while Hazard returned last GW- remember this next time someone says Kane is fixture proof perfect and Hazard is king of the trolls.

        1-Too early to bring in KDB, will be another couple of GWs before he starts.
        2- Trippier with the schedule he has & at his price isn't really worth it IMO.
        3- Your lack of trust in Liverpool's attack is startling.

            NEVER go against your gut.
            Just remember you might want to captain a Liverpool asset in GW 10 & 12, if your confident enough to captain Firmino then go ahead with it.
            Besides that TAA is better than Alisson & overkill in defense in all 3 teams unless you're planning to play 5-3-2 or 5-2-3

      I love the stats as I have been too lazy to fathom what they really mean.
      1 thing though; 8 weeks with things like shot conversion rate. Can this no be misleading?
      Say Joe Blogs has a conversion rate 80%, one can say "that's great, must have him" or "steering clear of him, nobody can keep this up. His team just don't supply him enough chances"
      Can anybody enlighten me on how they make use of the stats and what the important ones are?

        Well this is the question. The good thing we can do is look at huge sample sizes over seasons past for most players and teams.

        So from that we can work out what is below average, what's above and what historically might be sustainable.

        For shooting accuracy for example, Kane and Agüero have ~40-45% over their whole prem careers. If someone in the last 8 games has significantly higher than this it's probably unsustainable.

            Yeah it would for sure. Against a PL average or something. Check out Statsbomb.com, it's a fantastic website and company for football analytics. Some of it is stat heavy but a lot of the articles are pretty accessible. Or Ted Knutson on Twitter.

      Finally treated myself to full membership of the site, messing about with the different tools.

      With the rate my team tool, what is a good projected score? Or is it neither here nor there?

      I built a couple of WC teams on my budget that both scored 375, then one that scored 390. Should I be looking to hit 400 or is 390 decent?

      Any advice much appreciated.
