Rate My Team – Under The Hood Preview Movie

Grab the popcorn, it’s Saturday night at the movies. We conclude our Rate My Team preview set with an epic 14-minute, stat filled video outlining just how “Professor” Chris Atkinson’s statistical model works.

Admittedly, this is one for the hardcore number freaks but, even so, we hope this offers some insight into the workings behind the Projections and the Rate My Team tool and the effort we put in to maintain it.

What is Rate My Team?
Rate My team is a statistical model built specifically to assess every player in the Premier League and return their expected values for Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points in a given Gameweek. The system is a complex and thorough one which, of course, plots the probabilities of a player’s time on the pitch, their expected number of goals, assists, bonus points, yellow and red cards, clean sheets, own goals, goals conceded and saves. The strength of the opponent they are facing in a given Gameweek is also crucial; so every team has an attacking and defensive rating, every player a probability of playing a given match with injuries, suspensions and international absence factored in.

How Can It Help Me?
If you’re a member you can use the Rate My Team tool in a number of ways. Firstly, you can use it as a projections tool to predict what specific players will score, on average, over the next X number of Gameweeks. As you would have seen in our first movie, you have a players table that can be filtered by position or FPL cost and which can be extended to show any number of Gameweeks. You can also sort on “Value” to find those players projected to offer the best points per million return.

  There are no stand-out GK rotations, unlike last year. I think the best approach is to choose 2 cheap but good-value keepers, regardless of rotation.

      It's not certain but with Aguero not yet featuring in pre-season and seemingly out of Argentina's match on the 14th (just days before the season begins), I'd say he is very likely to start the first few games.

  Nolan is only good for half the games. WHAM at home are decent enough but wham away is another matter. They only scored 11 goals on the road last year, making them the lowest away day attackers in the league... If you go with Nolan it's better to have JRod or Lambert and rotate between playing a 3-5-2 formation and a 3-4-3...You will have a decent home fixture almost every week for 11 weeks...

    given southampton's away form that doesn't really make sense, most of lambert's points came away. I think with Nolan you just have to accept a lot of blanks, and know he can deliver on his price predominantly in home games alone. Rotating him, perhaps with a Hull player, would be a luxury.

      Yeah...possibly...Although i sense a bit of a change at Southampton..However the point remains that Big Sam is only interested in shutting up shop away from home and in effect Nolan is a dead rubber for away games...or at least he was last season although that could change of course with AC playing more...Personally i'd give Nolan a wide berth unless rotated with a similar priced rotatable player...

Like others on here, I've decided to put Rooney in my team to field 4 Chelsea players IF he moves to Chelsea.

Lets say he does, and his shirt changes to the blue of Chelsea on FPL, am I still able to tweak my team and make transfers for other players or will FPL say I have to get rid of a Chelsea player first before I can make other transfers?

If I can't make any more transfers without having to rid myself of one of my four Chelsea players then it just makes it all the more important to pick the right team now!

  Your front 8 is too balanced and so you have a benching dilemma which leads to wasting money every week. 6.5 for Snoddy is too much to be leaving on the bench. Also, Snoddy and Hooper, seems a bit excessive.

    Thanks, I can't decide which to keep, Snoddy based on past performances and Hooper based on the fact he seems to have an eye for goal, could have similar or more points than Holt two seasons ago. plus I feel Norwich might do very good this season.

    Not every week, thats why I took Boruc he seems to have ok fixtures when I won't be comfortable with Migs.
    
    I guess Snodgrass might be the way to go just need to find out who instead.
    
    Actually last season it worked out for me when I had a an expensive bench, in the rare occassion someone didn't play I got the points, obviously there was a lot of GW's I just kept cursing myself for playing the wrong players.

    Razvan Rat, West Ham. Could be useful for their home matches.
    
    Nolan has an unbelievable home record.
    
    And with Terry thats not a bad idea, but the problem with Cole is he's boring, granted he will get the 12 points but thats it, Terry, Ivanovic or Cahill can play one match and get the 12 points with a goal...but it's a sound move.

        Yeah Cole and Cech are probably the best Chelsea defensive choices but I think I'll risk and attacking defender, altough it is almost like the roulette, too many choices and it isn't clear if they are right ;-D

  I like it. Only thing I'd say is that, in my opinion, Villa coverage is not needed (apart from Benteke potentially) and would instead prefer a 3rd Chelsea. Maybe get in Oscar for Silva or Lukaku for Giroud and switch after GW1?

    Thanks for your thoughts, guys. Yeah, think I'm sticking with Michu for the moment. Not having him at the start of last season was my biggest mistake last season and I'm not repeating again. Even with his fixtures he's a beast. And as far as RVP is concerned, with Bale out of the picture he's a shoo-in. 🙂

  That can backfire - your trick with the keepers. I think you're probably safe for the 1st half of the season but I'd be wary towards the end when double gameweeks - and therefore blanks come into play.

  I like the Oscar pick and am tempted myself after watching him at the confederations cup. Although a young player he is maturing quickly into something quite special. Whether he will get the game time to warrant a FF place remains to be seen as Chelsea have a lot of options.

  I dunno about Dzeko and one of Oscar/Lukaku. That's two huge rotation risks (whatever pellegrini says I dont see dzeko as the answer) with a weak fifth mid. Although I suppose the autosub won't matter because they'll come on for cameos.

      Could it be that templates work because those players who might outperform the template du jour if they had the courage of their convictions limit themselves to those templates and thus miss out on the differentials they would have if they were less afraid?

    The plan to get RVP can easily shift to get a premium forward for Dzeko or Lukaku.. Reason being RVP's fixtures are a breeze from GW4 when I get him in.. thus saving a WC and not taking hits..

  Pretty decent side and plan. Keep an eye on the situation with Yang-Mbiwa as no-one's really sure whether he's 1st choice or Steven Taylor is.
  
  Don't really like all this Dzeko stuff. Would rather have someone safe and switch Lukaku out for whichever City striker it becomes apparent is nailed.

    Im a Newcastle fan.. I guarantee you Yanga-Mbiwa will start.. As for Dzeko.. He's been gold in pre season.. and its the only punt in my team.. Will wait till preseason ends to go with someone else maybe 😉
