Rate My Team – Build My Team Preview Movie

Following on from yesterday’s preview movie, which highlighted the Projections and Rate My Team’s Player List feature at work, we now cast an eye over the Build My Team component.

Once again, I got together with Rate My Team’s creator, Chris Atkinson, to demonstrate and talk you through how this feature works in practice. The movie highlights how you can piece together a pre-season lineup and how, once the season is underway, Rate My Team can help not only with transfer strategies but also with selection dilemmas such as the captaincy and bench order.

In the third part of the Rate My Team movie previews we’ll be talking at length on how the tool works behind the scenes, including a full run through of the steps we take to keep it maintained and providing numbers that can help with your lineups.

Just a note for those looking to add their team id’s in order to retrieve their lineups in Rate My Team – as the movie explains, this feature is not available until squads are locked down for Gameweek 1 and made public. Otherwise, of course, we’d all be able to view each other’s teams right now by just adding ID’s into the tool. Rest assured, once Gameweek 1’s deadlines has passed, you will be able to add and save your team ID to transfer your current lineup into the tool for tinkering.

Fantasy Football Scout Memberships are now available for the pre-season price of £12.50.

What is Rate My Team?
Rate My team is a statistical model built specifically to assess every player in the Premier League and return their expected values for Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points in a given Gameweek. The system is a complex and thorough one which, of course, plots the probabilities of a player’s time on the pitch, their expected number of goals, assists, bonus points, yellow and red cards, clean sheets, own goals, goals conceded and saves. The strength of the opponent they are facing in a given Gameweek is also crucial; so every team has an attacking and defensive rating, every player a probability of playing a given match with injuries, suspensions and international absence factored in.

How Can It Help Me?
If you’re a member you can use the Rate My Team tool in a number of ways. Firstly, you can use it as a projections tool to predict what specific players will score, on average, over the next X number of Gameweeks. As you would have seen in our first movie, you have a players table that can be filtered by position or FPL cost and which can be extended to show any number of Gameweeks. You can also sort on “Value” to find those players projected to offer the best points per million return.

However, this is just one part of the functionality. Rate My Team can also analyse your existing FPL lineup, recommend captains, vice captains, your bench and bench order, and allow you to model your future transfers. You’ll see this at play in the movie above.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Word around the Palace camp is that we're trying to get Marouane Chamakh on a 6 month loan deal

Could be a good idea. He was actually pretty good a few seasons ago up until RVP came back, had him in my team for a while if I recall.

Does anyone believe they'll actually have the willpower to avoid taking a hit after the first gameweek? (I know I won't!)

If the answer to that question is "no", then surely you should go heavy (5+) on DGWers, right?

I will. I'm only doing Lukaku > Aspas (or different 7.5 and below), then will get rid of Luiz GW2 and bench Hazard GW3.

Taking a hit to make sure you're on the rising bandwagons when the prices go mental is probably a good strategy in my book. Not doing it last season and being cautious is one of my regrets.

Lets be realistic. If a club offers you a 95m pound package deal (and this will probably be more, now that it was rejected) and the player wants to leave. Its as good as done.

    Hey all,

Any wise old fantasy football sages feel like helping a guy out with some thoughts on my team please?

    Mignolet (Boruc)

    Mertesacker/Koscielny/Coleman/Toure (Turner)

    Bale, Corzola, Ramirez (Bellamy/Lucas)

    Berbatov/Van Persie/Anelka

    Thank you!!!

I would switch Kos out for another defender, maybe a 4.5 like Collins, saves money on your defence as it looks quite expensive and opens up budget to improve your midfield. I think Walcott is a more better option than Cazorla as he presents just as much attacking returns as Cazorla and is cheaper so you can invest those saved funds elsewhere. With these savings from your two previous changed you may find it useful to switch Ramirez for Snodgrass who is great value at 6.5 and maybe switch Bellamy for Morrison who for 6m will give plenty attacking returns. With these suggested changes you still have 0.5 to switch Anelka to JRod who I believe is a safer option. Berbatov and Van Persie are two great striking options as they are the main attacking outlet in their teams and take pens and your defence (Mert, Coleman, Toure, Mig) present great coverage for cost.

Really not getting the Anelka interest me.

    a) He's 34
    b) he peaked at Arsenal (so is 14 years past his best)
    c) His last season was 2 games, no goals
    d) before that he was like, 22 games in China but still only scored 3
    e) before that, his last Premier League season was 9 games 1 goal.
    f) before that, his last full playing season was 32 games, 6 goals

Basically this is a guy who has playee no real football of note since 2010.
He is a blatant rotation risk and doesnt score goals.

Even if he is cheap, is it not better to get another cheap striker who is younger, fitter, hungrier, more nailed on and who might surprise us all?

Its different, which is always refreshing to see.

I just think if you're happy with it then go with it. Last season I allowed people on here to talk me out of starting with certain players due to their responses on other people's RMT's. I ended up shipping out some players I really needed.

Sometimes you have to go with what you are comfortable with and forget what anyone else says.

I like A but I like the punt on Aspas in B. He could be this season's Michu.

I also like the fact that you paired Migs with a £4.5m keeper instead of a £4m bench warmer. If Migs injures himself or Liv start off like they did last season (getting walloped 4-0 by WBA) you have no back up with a £4m keeper.

I haven't seen a lot of talk about Hooper finding a way into people's teams, is the general thinking that he isn't a brilliant cheap striking option?

I think people would like him more if he was £5.5 - 6.0m.

At £6.5m and with RVW to compete with for goals in a side that didn't score a lot last season he falls outside the budget window for people who have RVP, want 3 big hitters in MF and a £7.5/8m striker.

Ahh that makes sense now, just I saw a news article earlier where they were saying how great he was so I was expecting to see a lot of action around him on here now that he's available but that explains a lot.

He was great in the Championship and in SPL which, without Rangers in it is pretty much League 1 standard.

If he was the main lone striker then I would expect him to get 12-15 goals this season. Not sure how well he'll do when he's basically competing with van Wolfswinkel who is, apparently, a similar type of striker.

The jump from SPL to Prem is a lot bigger than some people think and so it will be interesting to see how he adjusts. He looks to have all the tools to succeed in the top flight though.

Rate My Team . Checking out GW 1 and 2 (intend possible WC for GW3) Managed to get 6 of that periods top 11 Rated players into a side...

    CHECK (Gazaniga)
    Meretesaker, Coleman, Turner (Parr, Chester)
    HAZARD, MATA, COUTINHO, Nolan, Yaya
    STURRIDGE, BENTEKE, (Maynard)

This bunch are predicted to score 122 points in the first 2 GW. (The rating program put Cech on the bench in GW2 which is odd as Gazaniga won't play so could be 124)

RVP and Bale out of the question and 0 in the bank, busy looking into the 5 'also rans' to predicatively improve the likelyhood of scoring more than that
