We’ll know tomorrow whether Frank Lampard’s red card earned against West Ham at the weekend, will stand and leave the midfield with a 3-match ban.
Chelsea have confirmed that an appeal for wrongful dismissal has been lodged and that the FA will meet tomorrow to decide whether to uphold the card and ban. Lampard is set to miss three matches if that is the case, including the FA Cup tie with Barnsley and the potentially big scoring games Premiership fixtures against Derby and Sunderland.
It will be interesting to see the result of this one. Previous experience tells us that Lampard’s ban is likely to stand and there’s even a chance that it could be extended to four games for a “frivolous” appeal on Chelsea’s part. That was the case with Boro’s recent appeal for Aliadiere’s sending off at Liverpool. For me, Lampard clearly struck out whilst entangled on the ground before standing to shove Boa Morte to the ground. It seems more likely that Boa Morte will receive a red rather than Lampard’s have his rescinded. We’ll have to wait and see.
Lampard’s absence is likely to see Ballack handed a run of games in Chelsea’s midfield which will interest fantasy managers with the double gameweek looming.
