Fernando Torres became the latest casualty of the international break, suffering what is thought to be a torn thigh muscle in Spain’s encounter with Belgium last night.
The Liverpool striker lasted just 17 minutes of that game before being replaced. Liverpool are yet to confirm any further details to this injury, but Spanish medical officials have offered their early opinion…
“He has intense pain in the back part of the thigh,” remarked the Spanish team doctor. “It is difficult to diagnose now if it is a strain or a small tear. If it is a strain, he could be out for about a week.”
Torres will be a major doubt for the home game with Wigan this weekend and for the Champions League clash with Atlético Madrid. With Chelsea looming the weekend after, Rafa will be very concerned that this injury doesn’t result in a prolonged absence.
This is certainly a major frustration for Torres’ fantasy owners, who have just seen him spark into life over the past two Premiership matches with 4 goals against Everton and City.
Ryan Babel also picked up an injury last night in Holland’s 1-0 win over Norway. He was subbed on 27 mintues and must also be a doubt for the Wigan game. That leaves Rafa with a likely front pairing of Keane and Kuyt against Bruce’s men. Neither of those are likely to offer compensation to Torres owners, or attract new interest, despite Kuyt being classed as a midfielder in the Fantasy Premier League.
We can only wait on more information and hope for the best.
