Edwin Van der Sar could be in line for a recall to the United lineup following a knee injury and a spell of compassionate leave.
The Dutch keeper flew back to Holland last month to receive specialist treatment on the injury; this was then followed by his wife suffering a brain haemorrhage, with United granting indefinite compassionate leave as a result. Van de Sar’s wife is now said to have made a good recovery and it is reported that he is now poised to join back up with the United squad this week…
It’s not yet clear just how Van der Sar’s injury has reacted to treatment so it seems unlikely that Ferguson will throw him into the fray at Birmingham this coming weekend, particularly as Kuszczak has kept two consecutive clean sheets in the league. However, this news will cast some doubt over the wisdom of considering the stand-in keeper from this point on. Clearly Van der Sar’s return will threaten Kuszczak’s starting role and it seems likely that we’ll enjoy one more gameweek from the Polish keeper before he is potentially dropped back to the United bench.
